Finally out of my reading rut! The prequel to Practical Magic. I can say this one was my fav out of the two. It follows the Aunts and their beloved brother before Sally and Gillian came in their lives. Their mother hid most of their family heritage from the siblings so when Franny gets an invitation to her strange Aunt Isabelle’s house it changes everything for them. To accepting who they are and who they will become to be is extremely challenging during the time of the 60s. Shit, America barely knew who she was. Will fate get the best of them or will they take their fate in their own hands? I’m glad The Rules of Magic had more magical tones. This was what I was looking for in the first. ☀️ REVIEW ☀️ I finally read the book that started it all. I had high hopes for this one and it did not disappoint at all. This story follows two different tales with two sisters. Gillian and Sally were raised by their aunts and were treated as outsiders growing up. All they wanted to do was run away. Sally got married, and Gillian ran away. Years later, the sisters are reunited under dire circumstances and have to put their differences aside for the greater good. I loved their storyline. They did everything together as children, so Gillian running away really did a number on Sally. But even when Sally was at her worst, Gillian’s words were there to comfort her. Distance be damned, sisterhood comes first. And their reunion is just as emotive. Now it’s Sally’s turn to help Gillian, but it’s difficult when both women regress to their old ways. But, regardless of their grievances for each other, they have each other’s backs no matter what. Antonia and Kylie, daughters of Sally, were raised differently than Sally. Sally didn’t want to repeat history. But with Gillian in the picture, the usually shy Kylie starts to gain more confidence, while beautiful Antonia starts to feel less desirable. Though their bond was strengthened due to problematic men, I felt that it was the weaker of the two. I wish we had gotten more time with them as sisters. Because I love their resolution and their coming together, it felt more like it needed to happen for the plot, and wasn’t as organic as Sally and Gillian. I absolutely loved this book. It shows the absolute resilience and strength of women. When they are at their lowest, they can always look to each other to get back up again. And with some magic sprinkled in, it made for a heartwarming and entertaining read. I officially read the entire Practical Magic series (🪄this post is spoiler free🪄), but I'm very hopeful that this isn't the last we'll get from the series🤞🤞🤞. Hello and happy new year! I sadly did not reach my 50 book reading goal for 2023, but i made it (just barely) to 40! However last year i only read 23 books so i am happy with this years amount! 🥳 These are my top 6 reads of the year. It feels like forever ago i read Jennette McCurdy's book as it was the first book i read this year, and i already want to reread it!!! But my top book would go to The Rules of Magic by @ahoffmanwriter! I am currently reading the "final" book in the Practical Magic series, but The Rules of Magic was just perfection for anyone who loves witchy books (and just so so so gorgeously written) - and this has been the witchiest year of my life which is fitting because i'm 33 and 33 is a high vibing number (as is any angel number) in numerology. One of my favorite reads this year 🙌🏽 this book was pure magic! I read it seasonally in the fall, but it would be good any time. I liked it even more than Magic Lessons, but it made me like that one more as I read this one. I’m reading these in chronological order so I’ve yet to do Practical Magic, which I know is the most famous, but I hope it’s as good as these other two! Rules of Magic I LOVED "Practical Magic" - the movie - as a kid, so when I saw this was a prequel, I was intrigued. Sally and Gillian's great aunts were girls once, too. With a mother who decided she didn't want to be magical: she wanted to be normal. She tried to give her children, Franky, Jet, and Vincent rules so they could also be normal. But they knew they weren't, and knew they didn't want to be either. The summer Franny turns 17, they all spend the summer with their great aunt Isabelle and learn their fates and the family curse. Don't fall in love - you will lose them. What follows is a life of discovery, loss, and yes, even love. Because the only cure for love is to love more. It's strange that things happen in this story while feeling nothing really happens in this story. And I'm not sure how I feel about the curse playing out in the lives of each of the siblings… **SPOILER how come Jet is the only one who loses her love? Or does she lose him because she wished Franny to stay in NY? Was it the curse or the wish? Because Vincent falls in love but fakes his death and gets to live with his love? Albeit without anyone else in his life… but Franny doesn't really trick fate out of her love - she does, but doesn't and they live 20 years together because they pretend their not together?! How does that work? I don't like it. Poor Jet. She's the only one who was willing to really embrace love and the only one who gets the curse. Not cool. Would have liked to have seen those love plot lines work out differently maybe? I think that is why I didn't love the book. And also again because things happen without really happening. Life just moves forward. And while that means it is a very normal life (is that supposed to be irony??), it makes the book a tad boring. Wasn't terrible though. And actually makes me want to re-watch "Practical Magic". The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman. Many years ago I watched Practical Magic for the first time and still today it is one of my favorite movies. When I found this book, which is the prequel to Practical Magic, I knew I had to read it. I loved the story, the magic and the special bond between the three siblings. Susanna Owens knows that there is something unique about her three children. Franny, Jet and Vincent, while difficult, have some special powers that will be difficult to hide any longer. Their mother set some rules, with the number one being never fall in love, but of course they wont obey her. One summer they go visit their aunt in Massachusetts and everything starts to change. The story is very unique and each character is perfectly crafted. I loved their special bond and how well they knew each other. It must not be easy thinking your whole life there is a curse that will follow you forever. This book has many sad moments, but also happy ones. It keeps you entertrained all the way through and in the end you are left with zero questions. The only thing I didn’t love about this book is that it is not divided by chapters, but by parts, and that can make it tedious sometimes. Overall great read! ***BOOK REVIEW*** Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Was given this book as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago and decided to give it a try. I have seen the movie Practical Magic and honestly enjoyed the book, however, I will say it just wasn’t a book for me. I enjoyed the idea of fantasy, magic, romance, and curses. However, I just didn’t get enough. I also didn’t see as much as a story arch that I normally tend to enjoy. In the end though it was a fun read! Sometimes it’s good to try something new too ☺️📖. Plus I did enjoy the character banter between the siblings and family. I recently binged the Practical Magic books by Alice Hoffman and absolutely fell in love!!😍🙌 Of course I was familiar with the movie but never bought or read the books until this year. These are all connecting standalone novels that I read in publication order and highly recommend! For those of you who do not know in this series we follow the Owens family who are witches and cursed. Whenever they fall in love it does not end well... The writing style feels very comforting where the author tells you about this peculiar family and their powers in a witchy house in a small town. Each of the different generations suffer with heartache and learn to love and lose people. Together they’ll discover family secrets, experience love and heartbreak, and leave behind an unimaginable legacy in this fairy tale. . This book hit different than the last one. And that has to do with the timing. . With “Practical Magic”, we knew that the curse was going to be broken by the end of the book. So we knew that everything would work out. Here, we know the curse is NOT going to get broken any time soon. So things are not going to work out the way we want or expect them to. . Vincent proved himself the wild card in this story, since his history is hidden in the first book. I loved his mysterious and upstart nature, there wasn’t a line from him that didn’t make me want to cry. . Alice Hoffman did a great job writing the overall mood of New York in the 60s: Tumultuous, Magical, and Melancholic. Her prose is absolutely gorgeous and lyrical, it’s a thing to behold. . The romances broke my damn heart, everyone of them changing the Owens siblings for good. . Today’s book - The Rules of Magic 🎃 Like many, I grew up as a fan of the Practical Magic movie. So when I found out there was a whole collection of stories from this universe, I about died from happiness! The Rules of Magic was my first journey into this literary series, and it made me feel right at home! Not only was the Owens Family we know and love expanded upon, this story also tackled a few big historical milestones, the fight for rights in marginalized communities, and the tremendous pain of loss. For me, this was a PERFECT late-September read to get ready for spooky season. The writing was smooth and flowed easily, which made the story drift by like a happy dream. I also appreciate that you can read this book without first having read others in the series. It helps if you know Practical Magic, but definitely not a requirement!
