Thanks so much for all your lovely messages over the last couple of days. You really are a lovely bunch ❤️ I’m so grateful for this community and for the escapism of books. Here’s a little review of a novella I read in December. Children of Winter is a children’s story but still an enjoyable read as an adult. Berlie Doherty is a great writer, I really enjoyed some of her other books when I was growing up. This one is about three children who fall into a time slip and find themselves in the seventeenth century during the time of the plague. The children are sent away by their parents to live in a shepherd’s barn in the forest, hours from civilisation, in the hope that they’ll avoid infection. With a cow, some chickens, a stockpile of dried food and some simple foraging skills, they make a good attempt at survival. But storms, hunters and infected wanderers threaten their safety. Despite being a children’s book this was quite eerie and I loved the winter forest setting. It was such a page turner too. Unfortunately I don’t think the book is in print anymore, I was lucky enough to find it in a used book store. But if ever you get the chance to read it or any of Berlie Doherty’s other work I would thoroughly recommend! Book 27 of 2023 📖 Autumn Term class text. Every autumn term in Year 5, we read Street Child and use it to explore and develop reading skills. It's a wonderful piece of historical fiction based on the true story of the young orphan who met Dr Thomas Barnardo and inspired him to dedicate his life to improving the lives of destitute children in Victorian Britain. Through the fictional tale of Jim Jarvis' life prior to meeting 'Barnie', we are able to understand more about the conditions that the lowest class were expected to endure during the 1800's. It's the perfect way to enhance our topic and grasp the children's interest. | Throwback Thursday | This was a book that I read in primary school. A book one of my sisters recently reminded me of. It coincided with learning about the Plague & going on a school trip to Eyam in Derbyshire. A trip I remember fondly (because I’ve always been a morbid history nerd). The story sounds so much cooler than I remember it being! So it’ll be getting a re-read 😊 In my final year of primary school, I helped adapt the book into a play to be performed in front of the school… & I portrayed Catherine.. neither career took off 🙃 Alas, here’s the synopsis: Out walking, deep in the Derbyshire hills, Catherine and her family are forced to take shelter from a sudden storm in an old barn. It all seems strangely familiar to Catherine. Qotd: Your last 2 star read? This is a story of two girls who are going to be sisters, it shows there life side by side but in totally different circumstances. One is from Africa and other is from Europe. This story based on the era when there is the pandemic of AIDS/HIV is going on and so this African girl Abela is lossing every family member one by one until her uncle sends her to Europe and her life took a drastic turn. On the other side there is Rosa whose mother wants to adopt a child but Rosa think what was the need of another child? And when she got to know her views on life also got changed. 📚 - Bilan des lectures d'octobre/novembre/décembre - 📚 Je dois dire que je suis plutôt surprise de ce dernier trimestre de 2022! 😮 12 livres sont sortis de ma PAL et j’en ai emprunté un à ma maman, j’ai donc été très efficace dans mes lectures. Pour autant, je n’ai pas particulièrement pris de plaisir à lire pendant cette période… En effet, même si les livres que je lisais me faisaient envie, j’ai eu quelques déceptions et pas mal de lectures “moyennes”. 😅 Pour autant, sortent du lot quelques romans comme Enterrées vivantes, un thriller addictif et particulièrement bien construit. Le dernier roman de John Green sort aussi du lot car il nous permet de découvrir la sensibilité de l’homme qui se cache derrière cet auteur si connu. 😊 Le témoignage de Bénédicte Chenu sur la schizophrénie de son fils m’a aussi particulièrement touché car nous découvrons ainsi la réalité de cette maladie. En revanche, grosse désillusion avec le roman de James Ellroy; j’attendais tout autre chose de ma lecture. Je suis aussi déçue de la relecture que j’ai faite ce trimestre avec le roman de Berlie Doherty; le souvenir que j’avais de cette lecture est bien différent du ressenti que j’ai maintenant mais cela me montre aussi que j’ai évoluée. 😉 Dans l’ensemble ce fut donc un bon trimestre. ❤️ - Cher inconnu - publié chez @gallimard_jeunesse - ⏳️ Un roman que j'ai déjà lu étant plus jeune, pour lequel je gardais un bon souvenir et que je voulais redécouvrir quelques années après mais pour lequel j'ai été assez déçue… 😅 Dans mon souvenir j'avais trouvé ce livre très percutant pour des adolescents mais aujourd'hui, même si le thème général du roman est très intéressant, j'ai trouvé ma lecture avec molle. Au delà du thème général, j'ai trouvé très intéressant d'avoir une différence flagrante dans la manière dont réagissent les parents. En revanche, je trouve dommage que les changements de point de vue entre Chris et Helen ne soient pas plus marqués que cela. On comprend bien que ce n'est plus le même personnage qui parle mais un changement visuel (sur la police par exemple) aurait été le bienvenue à mon goût. En bref, un roman jeunesse qui aborde un thème assez important je pense mais qui ne m'aura pas totalement convaincue. 😉 Et vous, lisez vous des romans jeunesse? Cela vous arrive-t-il de relire un livre de votre adolescence? 😊 Résumé: La vie est facile et légère pour Chris et Helen. Ils s'aiment. Our recent book stack! These are read to a 6 and 4 year old (girls). As you can see, there is a clear favourite at the moment and The Secret Seven they are devouring and already asking to read them again and we’ve not finished the series yet! They are also continuing to love Helen Peters books which focus on animal adventures and veterinary care of injured animals. A Deer Called Dotty didn’t disappoint! Olga Da Polga - adventures of a Guinea pig. The reviews were great but we haven’t found it that captivating. It’s been slow going! Alice in wonderland - well it’s quirky as expected! Full of fun and madness! Street Child by Berlie Doherty was a bit heavier going than we expected and the girls wanted to stop reading it as we got about half way through. Mainly as the mum in the book dies and 6yo is very aware of death at the moment and struggling with the concept. The book is based on a true story and set in the victorian era and inevitably would lead to a positive ending as it’s the story of the boy who inspired Dr Barnardo to start a free school for poor children in these times. A good insightful and educational story for a slightly older child studying the victorian period? Importantly books are about enjoyment and are very personal and emotive based on different tastes, opinions and life stage! The girls were worried to say they didn’t like Street Child as their expectation was books needed to be finished! I have reassured them that it’s totally ok to not complete one, and books are a bit like food. You might try it and dislike it, and never like it. Or you might try it, not like it, but one day try it again and enjoy it! And some you’ll LOVE come what may and want to read over and over like you want to eat your favourite food! It’s in the tasting all kinds of different genres, authors and topics that they will find their own love of books. Sometimes you try something you wouldn’t imagine you like and then it surprises you! Just like the satisfaction of serving your child’s favourite meal, it can feel just as good to find their perfect recipe in a book that they can’t get enough of! 💕 📖 #childrensbooks #booklovers

Abela raakte pas haar moeder kwijt, die net zoals alle andere familieleden overleed aan aids. Plots duikt haar oom Thomas op, die wilt Abela perse meenemen naar Engeland. Abela's verhaal wordt afgewisseld met dat van Rosa. De dertienjarige Rosa woont in Groot-Brittannië samen met haar mama. Contact met haar vader heeft ze niet, maar dat vindt Rosa allemaal prima. Zij en haar mama zijn beste vriendinnen en doen alles samen. Maar wat als Rosa's mama er toch nog graag een tweede dochter bij wil? De verhalen van de twee meisjes maken het samen tot een prachtig geheel. Het verhaal leest zo vlot, ik kon niet stoppen en las het in één avond uit. Ik was heel erg vaak ontroerd en aangedaan, vooral door het intense verhaal van Abela zelf. Een meisje van negen, alleen op de wereld...Maar ook Rosa heeft het moeilijk met de wens van haar mama. Is ze niet goed genoeg meer als enige dochter? Berlie Doherty weet je te raken met haar woorden, tot tranen toe. Through these and other tales, War Girls presents a moving portrait of loss and grief, and of hope overcoming terrible odds. The First World War brought many changes in the lives of women. It is often represented as having had a wholly positive impact, opening up new opportunities in the world of work and strengthening their case for the right to vote. The reality is more complex. Not all of the opportunities the war provided to women were entirely positive or long lasting. However,even before the formation of the women’s services, some pioneering women made their own way to the front to help the war effort. In 1914, when the War Office turned down an offer of help from Scottish doctor Elsie Inglis with the words, ‘My good lady, go home and sit still’, she set up the Scottish Women’s Hospitals on the fighting fronts. At the time - and in subsequent years - it was felt that the losses amounted to a 'lost generation' of young men. During the 1920s, newspaper headlines talked of 'surplus' women who would never find husbands. While many middle class women did remain unmarried due to the lack of available men in the relatively narrow social sphere in which they moved, some women in this period remained single by choice or by financial necessity.Women in World War I were mobilized in unprecedented numbers on all sides. The vast majority of these women were drafted into the civilian work force to replace conscripted men or work in greatly expanded munitions factories. Thousands served in the military in support roles, but in Turkey, Russia, Germany and other countries many saw combat as well.
