What was your most recent read? Last week I did seven books in seven days (all the videos are on my profile) and I really enjoyed doing so. It was great to get some books off of my TBR and read some books I was either really looking forward to or kept putting off. Will I do this challenge again? I am hoping to do this again at some point but I don't know when. It was nice to have some guidance when picking what books off of my TBR to read next and I think if I do it again I'll include something like only books I bought in 2023, or similar. My rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Is impressive how a book written in 1843 is still relevant, but again a classic is a classic for a reason. Is hard to rate memoirs,but I’ll give this one ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. 5/7 This book focuses on the relationship between Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe. Their relationship went through so many many phases but you could tell how much they loved and cared about each other. My heart broke so many times reading this book, reading about their hustle as two young artists in New York, and how they went through some things that no one should. Our protagonist's perspective on the world and the community he has always lived in are both altered when he comes across girls working in a convent. So I just finished book 4 of my #SevenBooksSevenDays - which is book 7 in #ArcMonth - and I updated @netgalley with the review and reached a milestone of 50%! Not quite the sought after 80% but getting there (and that's with a few new approvals since starting the challenge this month as well!) Wow, I just finished What Moves the Dead and it is fantastic. I keep changing my mind between 4 and 5 stars! It is an excellent and creepy retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher. I would absolutely recommend this, especially for spooky season! So yay, I just about finished my challenge and I've really enjoyed reading such amazing books over the past week! Stay tuned for more detailed thoughts about the seven books I read.

As I have only managed 4 out of my 7 books, I decided I'd cheat a bit and change the last 3 to short novels and try to read them all today! They're all under 200 pages!

What’s the fastest you’ve finished a book? 🐉 I am doing a #sevenbooksinsevendays challenge this week, going from Tuesday to Tuesday, so I’ll be (hopefully) finishing a book a day! The first book in my self-inflicted challenge was “The Merciless Ones” by @namina.forna . It is the sequel to “The Gilded Ones,” which was one of my favorite reads last year, and this sequel did NOT disappoint! I have a full review on my TikTok, which has the same handle as my bookstagram, so I’m easy to find. I will say this book is getting 5 stars from me. I loved it! 🐉 The Gilded Ones was a @firenationcreations book club read, meaning it has a beautiful candle featuring Deka and Ixa! Een boek wat al een tijdje op m’n plank lag om gelezen te worden waar ik nu dan de tijd voor neem. 📘 We volgen twaalf verschillende personen, allemaal van inheems Amerikaanse afkomst. We volgen hun alledaagse levens, die er allemaal anders uit zien, maar die allemaal drie dingen gemeen hebben. Hun voorouders met verschrikkelijke verledens, hun band met de stad Oakland in California en hun bezoek aan de Pow Wow die binnenkort in Oakland zal plaatsvinden. 📗 In het begin krijgen alle twaalf hun eigen hoofdstuk. Halverwege het verhaal blijken er wat verhaallijnen met elkaar te kunnen verbinden. 📙 Wat een hartverscheurend, informatief, meeslepend boek is dit! Op het einde leefde ik met allen mee! Ik wilde van alle twaalf weten hoe het verhaal verder afliep. Ik kon het boek niet wegleggen. Ik kreeg het niet in een dag uit, maar het volgende boek moest maar wachten. Ik moest en zou het uitlezen. Prachtig boek! ~~~~~~~~~~ 🇬🇧 On the third day of #SevenBooksInSevenDays I’m going for There there by Tommy Orange. A book that’s been sitting on my shelve for quite some time to be read, which I now finally make the time for. 📘 We follow twelve different persons, all of Native American heritage. We follow their daily lives, that all look different, but all have three things in common. Their ancestors with a terrible histories, their ties to the city of Oakland, CA and their visit to the Big Oakland Pow Wow soon. 📗 Every character gets its own chapter at the start of the book. Halfway through there are some storylines that intertwine. What a heart breaking, informative, immersive book! At the end I was totally feeling for all twelve of them. I wanted to know how their stories developed. I couldn’t put the book away. I didn’t finish the book in one day, but the next book just had to wait. I had to finish this one first! Dinsdag 26 juli: Dag 2 van de #7BoekenIn7DagenChallenge 📖 Nr. 61 Nic Stone - Wat zou Justyce doen? / Dear Justyce (@bestofyabooks) 📕 Op dag twee van de #ZevenBoekenInZevenDagen heb ik gekozen voor Wat zou Justyce doen?, het vervolg op Wat zou Martin doen? Een boek wat al langer op m’n lijst stond, maar waar in gewoon nog niet aan toe gekomen was tot in het onlangs tegenkwam in de #Bibliotheek. 📘 Quan zit in een huis van bewaring (een soort van gevangenis voordat je veroordeelt bent). Zijn korte, maar heftige levensverhaal wordt beschreven aan de hand van flashbacks. De misstanden in het Amerikaanse rechtssysteem worden in woorden begrijpelijk voor de doelgroep (jongvolwassenen) bloot gelegd. 📗 Sowieso ben ik fan van alles van de hand van @NicStone. Maar wat ik mooi vind aan dit boek is dat naast het institutionele racisme ook wordt beschreven hoe dit opgelost kan worden. En de hoop die dit met zich meebrengt. ~~~~~~~~~~ 🇬🇧 On day 2 of the #SevenBooksInSevenDays I picked Dear Justyce, the sequel to Dear Martin. A book that has been on my list for the longest, but one that I just haven’t gotten around to, until I recently stumbled upon it in the #Library. 📘 Quan is in jail, awaiting his trial. His short, but intense life story is being described through flashbacks. The flaws in the American legal system are being explained in words understandable to the target group, young adults. 📗 I’m a fan of everything by @NicStone. But what I like about this book is that it doesn’t just describes the deep rooted institutional racism, it also described how this can be solved. Een boek met korte verhalen van 23 immigranten. 📘 Westerse en niet-westerse immigranten komen aan het woord. Moslims, queer moslims, non-binaire mensen, mensen met een handicap, feministen, kinderen van gastarbeiders, kinderen uit de Nederlandse koloniën, kinderen van vrijheidsstrijders. Heel divers dus. 📗 Doordat allen een persoonlijk verhaal vertellen heb je 23 verschillende invalshoeken over migratie, identiteit en racisme. Met daarbij ook 23 verschillende schrijfstijlen. A book with 23 short stories by immigrant. 📘 Western and non-Western immigrants get to tell their stories. Muslims, queer Muslims, non-binary people, people with a disability, feminists, children of migrant workers, children from the Dutch colonies, children of freedom fighters. Very diverse. 📗 There’s 23 different angles, because all of them tell a personal story about migration, identity, racism. Written in 23 different writing styles. Laat ik nou net vakantie hebben die week en m’n man nog niet. En ze de tuin aan het renoveren zijn (waardoor ik toch niet echt weg kan). Dus ik doe mee! 📚 Ik heb 7 + 1 boek uitgekozen. Ik begin elk dag een boek en als ik het niet uitgelezen krijg (er zitten een paar dikkerds tussen), lees ik het later gewoon alsnog uit. 🌍 En de +1 is voor Ice. I’ll start a new book every day and if I don’t get to finish a book that day (there are some big ones in there), I’ll just finish reading it another time. 🌍 The +1 is for Ice. I really want to finish reading that book this week. If I read about 25 pages a day I should finish by Sunday. I’ve been reading that book 1,5 years now for my #ReadingTheWorld challenge. In between the years I decided to tackle a few of the shorter books which had been on my tbr for a long while by doing a #SevenBooksInSevenDays challenge. It was a bit stressful, especially since there were a lot of things to do with family at that time but in the end I managed to read the seven books in time. If you’ve known me for a while it will not surprise you that I changed around which books I was going to read several times until I ended up with the three physical books seen in the first photo, plus the four eBooks seen on the next slide. Joost Zwagermann’s novella Duell (translated from the Dutch) is a wildly entertaining satire about the art market and the struggles modern museology faces. Recommended for anyone interested in (contemporary) art and those who fancy characters who are the architects of their own demise. For #day1 of #sevengoodreadsinaweekchallenge The sense of an ending ✨ I am not a fan of prize nominated reads but some of them are certainly worth the hype. The sense of an ending won Julian Barnes, The Man Booker Prize in 2011 and I can totally see why. ✨ So, it went like this - I read @the.bookish.epicure ‘s wonderful review of this book, got convinced in a split second and ordered the book in the next few minutes. Today, it took me just a few hrs to read this and it was a treat. I never thought storytelling could be so crisp, intelligent, philosophical and witty at the same time! Barnes gives you the profoundness of the moments of solitary reflection and the comfort of talking to a friend, packaged into one, in this small book(150 pages). ✨ With a slow moving, full of reminiscences, first half that paves way for the thriller like second half, it is a brilliant piece of work that portrays human nature in a very real and logical way. Can’t recommend it enough.
