Book of the Ancestor trilogy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Mark Lawrence was not an author I was aware of before Red Sister was selected for our book club. But after hearing good things from the other members I was keen to start it. I went in knowing nothing, but was immediately interested by the premise. By chapter 8 I was completely hooked on Red Sister. I had no idea where the story was going or what was going to happen, but I was so up for it. Also it has an education setting which I'm a big fan of, so was happy to watch that play out. I became so intensely invested in these characters. I've not been this invested since the Stormlight Archives. I really really love the focus on friendship in this trilogy, I think it was done really well. Nearing the end of Holy Sister, I was so stressed! I really wanted to know what happened but was scared for all the characters. I particularly liked Kettle and Apple, their relationship is brilliant. I think the world building was done really well. I love their planet with the expanding ice sheets and narrowing corridor of livable land. Having the types of magic limited by being tied to the four bloodlines, but then expanded by the sheer amount of ways that the characters found to use their specific types of magic was really cool. Lawrence's writing is great, all three books were really well written. The pacing is maintained throughout and there are some really intense scenes. I binged this trilogy, in each book I was hooked within the first couple of chapters. I was so glad I'd already borrowed Holy Sister from the library so I could read it as soon as I'd finished Grey Sister. I gave Holy Sister an immediate 5 star rating. I loved it so much! I already want to reread the whole trilogy. I feel like there's probably a load of little things that I've missed. 📔📖 Book of Ancestor trilogy — mini review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’ve recently finished reading the book of ancestor trilogy and I must say it is definitely one worth picking up! It’s a quite brutal, relatively fast paced fantasy series. The second and third instalment are very action packed and honestly more violent than I expected? Which on one hand was exciting to follow, on the other I did find myself wanting for a bit more space for the characters to breathe and for me to be able to invest in them more. Not that I wasn’t invested, because I was, I just think whilst I did enjoy those characters and cared for them, I don’t think they’ll stay with me intensely for very long. The world building is definitely interesting though and the overall narrative very compelling! There are time jumps between each instalment though and I can’t help but think about how this would make for an AMAZING movie trilogy!! It would be soooo good. The last book made me quite sad I will be honest ahem because things happen let’s just say… anyway I think if you’re looking for an action packed fantasy series that’s not too long to get through, definitely pick this up! The beginning of Red Sister is a bit slower but once it picks up it just runs on. And the rest of the instalments just never decrease the pace. "Never be so focused on picking a lock that you forget kicking down the door is also an option." ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 This book is the second in the 'Book of the Ancestor' series and follows the first book, 'Red Sister.' Let me be clear. I did really enjoy this book. I loved being back in Nona Greys world and didn’t realise that I missed the convent and its nuns until I started reading. I also love how Mark Lawrence focuses so much on female friendship and connections instead of male validation or romance. Although, I think there are hints that Nona will start getting male attention in the third book, which I won't mind as long as the friendships and sisterhood aspect doesn't disappear. What I noticed is that the first book takes place when Nona is 9 and this one takes place when she's around 15. However, the writing style and Nona's thought process stays the same. I know it's a fantasy and perhaps she was just a really mature nine year old, but I find it hard to believe that she stayed the same mentally for 6 years. As always with second installments in trilogies, the middle part of this book felt too slow. There were also parts where it kept switching to three different perspectives, in three different locations. It felt like my brain working overtime to figure out who's POV I was reading and where they were. Sometimes the battle scenes were really swift and satisfying, other times they were too drawn out for my liking. I hate long, punchy brawls. Gimme a sword fight any day. I am really excited to read the third and final book of the series and hope Nona and the nuns can get a good ending. (If the ending is sad, I won't forgive the past version of myself that picked up the first installment.) Mark these under books I enjoyed, with covers that I hated. I was quite close to getting some book covers for this series because I really disliked the art work. Overall the Book of the Ancestors was a compelling read and I struggle to say which book I like the best because I thoroughly enjoyed every step of Nona's journey. It's got alot of the tropes that I love - strong female MC, boarding school vibes, found family and of course, the chosen one trope. It did feel like the author ran out of time on the last one because it is not only smaller than the rest but the ending felt quite rushed. I hate to say that the quality dropped right at the end of this series but it really did. Lo dico? Lo dico. Nona Grey >>> Mia Corvere. Ecco, l'ho detto. E se mi conoscete, sapete che ho amato Nevernight alla follia. Ma questa trilogia è mille volte meglio. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕 piene. Andiamo con ordine. Il pezzo forte di questa serie, secondo me, sono i personaggi, tra l'altro, visto il setting, quasi tutti personaggi femminili e, a mio avviso, scritti benissimo. Finalmente delle donne che riescono a essere umane senza essere melense. E anche se la nostra protagonista è sicuramente una donna guerriera abbastanza 'badass', è comunque circondata da una miriade di donne diverse, ciascuna delle quali ha la sua individualità, il suo carattere, e soprattutto il suo personale tipo di forza, che non sempre risiede nelle mere capacità di combattente. Tutti questi personaggi sono, a loro modo, imperfetti, tutti combattono con le loro ombre, e del resto tra i messaggi principali dell'intera saga c'è proprio questo: l'accettare sé stessi, anche i difetti, anche tutti gli aspetti spigolosi della propria personalità, perché sono gli elementi fondamentali dell'umanità di ciascuno. Non ho potuto fare a meno di affezionarmi a tutte, e siccome melte di loro le conosciamo fin da quando sono bambine, è stato stupendo vederle crescere nell'arco dei diversi libri. Il world building è sicuramente particolare, anche se alcuni aspetti potevano forse essere spiegati un po' meglio (io ancora non l'ho capito come hanno messo in cielo 'sta Luna). I had previously read A Sorcery Of Thorns and An Enchantment of Ravens by Maragaret Rogerson and really liked them. They were light, cute reads, with humorous FMCs. This was very different in the sense that the FMC was very serious and carrying trauma, and the atmosphere was much darker, also there was no romance involved at all, but I found the plot really captivating. I liked how the relationship between the FMC and the revenant grew. On its way to being one of my favourite fantasy trilogies 🗡️ 🛡️ The second novel in the Book of the Ancestor trilogy. Nona continues her training at the Convent of Sweet Mercy, pursued by a a self-appointed empress, a thwarted assassin, and a deranged son of one of the empires richest lords. I didn’t want the sisters to leave the Convent, I could happily read about them learning deadly techniques forever, but it was certainly a shake up and sets the final book up nicely. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨BOOK REVIEW✨ Grey Sister by Mark Lawrence @mark___lawrence Finally finished this! It’s taken me two months due to moving house, settling in, DIY, and shift changes at work but I got there! I’ve first got to mention the brief foreword about an unknown character - we don’t know who Keot is, we’re not supposed to, and yes, we will find out - had me starting this book rather amused! Poor Nona can’t just be left alone can she? After protecting her friends from the last encounter in the first book, she’s mercilessly perused by a fellow novice who can’t let go of her superiority, a lord seeking revenge, and the Inquisition, who may or may not have shady motives. Life at Sweet Mercy has undergone some harsh changes since the Shipheart was stolen, and not only for the lack of heat. Nona is determined to find out more from her friend’s death, while trying to acclimatise herself to sharing her thoughts and feelings with little choice in the matter. I finally have all the matching hardbacks of Book of the Ancestor! I'm a sucker for hardcovers, but the real reason I wanted these in hardcover is because the only other physical version is mass market paperback, which I loathe. This is absolutely in my top 5 favorite series of all time! The character work is amazing, the growth we see from Nona and her peers, and the steady plot buildup is beautiful, and the theme of friendship is one of the best I've ever read. Also, instead of the middle book being a slump like many 2nd books in trilogies often are, it's arguably one of my favorite books of all time. Hopefully I get around to Book of the Ice soon. •Red Sister, by @mark___lawrence • Primo romanzo della trilogia Nona Grey, mi è piaciuto parecchio anche se non mi è entrato nel cuore com'è successo con Prince of Thorns. Nona però è una bella protagonista, uno strong female character credibile, i suoi poteri e la sua forza sono giustificati dalla magia. E anche quando vince, c'è un prezzo da pagare. Sembra un grande prologo, ma ho apprezzato il focus sul personaggio di Nona, sulla sua crescita, sulle sue abilità e debolezze, sia caratteriali sia fisici. Nona è insicura, chiusa, ha giusto un momento di spacconaggine e nell'economia del romanzo è più che accettabile. Ma in questo modo, pur entrando in una precisa categoria, riesce a distinguersi fra la massa di protagoniste femminili stereotipate. Ho avuto l'impressione che lo stile di Lawrence abbia avuto un miglioramento, non posso esserne certa perché la trilogia dei rovi (ops fulmini) ha una traduzione pessima. Questa ha degli errori oggettivi, ma non è un brutto lavoro, anche se la scelta di mantenere i nomi delle suore in inglese non mi piace molto.
