I just finished reading "The Marriage Clock" by Zara Raheem, one of the most thrilling books I've ever read. It's a true reflection of the South Asian community, exploring the values and culture ingrained in every aspect of their lives. In this tale, marriage, a pivotal decision, looms over girls once they hit their twenties. Leila, the protagonist, becomes a victim of this cultural pressure. Her parents and the entire community continually remind her that it's time to get married. As her parents begin searching for a prospect, Leila disapproves, yearning to find her own match amidst a sea of possibilities. Living in a fantasy world, she seeks a perfect guy who fulfills all 41 points on her wish list. In my view, she's mistaken, as perfection is elusive, and everyone has flaws. A few mini reviews because I haven't had the time to write individual ones. Which of the three have you read? Jade War (4.25⭐️) - Definitely didn't suffer from the slow start that the first book did. - The pace lagged a little here and there but for the most part, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. And that last bit...I can't remember any other recent book that had me that stressed out 😅 - So many new layers added: the characters, the exploration of history and politics, the introduction to the Kekonese society outside of Kekon. - Read this with @beebottomsreads and we had some great discussions about it. The Marriage Clock (2.5⭐️) - There was a good idea somewhere in there. - However, this was spoilt by a juvenile main character and clumsy writing (especially that ending). - Despite my complaint about the writing, the book was easy to read and even funny at times but it really missed out on the opportunity to explore the themes in a more nuanced way. Fourth Wing (3.25⭐️) - I actually enjoyed this more than I expected to, though I have a lot of complaints about it. - If you think too deeply about the story, there is so much that doesn't make sense 🤣 - The introduction to the world was very lazily done. The author literally had the MC spout out facts as a calming mechanism 🙄 - The romance was soooo cringey and I could have done without the unnecessarily explicit details that felt like they were just shoehorned in. - The twists were not as surprising as they were probably intended to be. - Despite all that, it was a fun and addictive read. Might have helped that I had the audiobook at x2 the speed. - Cool dragons! - The only character I really liked died 😭 - I'm curious about the revelations and secrets and politics, so I'll probably read book 2.

So I’m reading my physical TBR 😂 The marriage clock was one book in many 😅 it was first to be read and it was worthy. It talks about an Indian girl born in the USA with three months to find a husband. The whole book revolves around this journey. It explains us the pressure Asian Indian girls have to marry young. It was a really fun book and I loved all the men she went out with to find the one. The writing is really easy to understand and I really liked that every time I opened the book I was immediately immersed in the story. The end was my favourite. I picked this up thinking it was a romance book, but it's not. It's about realizations, managing expectations, finding purpose and self-worth. This was about Leila who is trying to find a husband because her "marriage clock" was ticking. Although you get to ride along Leila's journey with finding a husband but eventually realizing her self-worth, this was an okay read. I did laugh at some parts because of Leila's funny thoughts and unrealistic expectations but it was a bit slow burn for me. Just when I thought she had finally found someone, the story just proves me wrong. On the other hand, I did enjoy learning more about Muslim and Indian culture.

She was an annoying character, looking for a nonexistent perfect guy forgetting she was imperfect. Although some of the guys she went on dates with were over the top, the okay ones, she didn't even give them a second chance. Moreover, I was annoyed at the ultimatum her parents gave her, I don't think my parents could give me an ultimatum to get married if there's no money involved. Mika was always all about how mothers were not given a break, that there were lot of pressure on women, but this only applied to her, she didn't practice what she preached. She expected her mom to be perfect, and said nothing about her distant father 2. She got annoyed when a White celebrity wore a kimono(she didn't disrespect the Japanese culture ), Mika was not interested in her culture then, and she didn't want someone else to 3. She was annoyed that her daughter's white adoptive parents didn't do anything Japanese with her. How often do we imagine ourselves in a classic Shah Rukh khan movie? That instant connection that you must feel when your soul mate is around. The wind that blows the moment you two come face to face, and, of course the violins that start playing the soothing melody of love. That is exactly what Leila had in mind when she thought about her husband. Someone whom she would fall in love with, someone who is going to the Raj to her Simran (a Bollywood movie reference.) ✨Leila’s parents on the other hand are just your ‘regular’ parents who want to see you married the moment you enter your twenties. They want a settled life for you, the definition of which is a caring husband, kids and…that’s about it. They don’t seem to get the concept that your Bollywood dream needs to be fulfilled. They are answerable to the society that why you aren’t saying yes to the ‘perfect’ suitor. ✨This was such an enjoyable and quick read. Earlier this summer, @wildsistersbookco had their grand opening and I decided that that was an excellent opportunity to do some book browsing. As I perused their shelves, The Marriage Clock leapt off of the top shelf and landed at my feet. I figured that it wasn’t every day that a book begs you to buy it, so I purchased it and brought it home to hang out with all of my other unread books. . Fast forward several weeks: I needed a palate cleanser after my last read and remembered the bright yellow book that desperately wanted to be mine. And that’s how I found myself spending the past few days reading this very sweet debut novel by Zara Raheem. Our main character here is Leila Abid, who is a spunky part-time English teacher and is very much single, much to her mother’s chagrin. Leila makes her parents a deal: Give her three months for find her own match, and if she fails they can arrange a marriage for her. I started this thinking that it was going to be a typical rom com and, well, I was very pleasantly surprised. (I have to leave it at that because, well, spoilers.) But if you’re looking for a book that is about self-discovery and learning to choose yourself, this bright yellow book might be one that you should bring home.

South Asian Heritage Month: Culture and Arts- I feel so honored to be joining @minaal.reads in her incredible series she's created in dedication of the South Asian Heritage Month, an annual event to uplift and celebrate South Asian voices. I hope that you all follow @minaal.reads and have been following along with this series she has been spotlighting since July 18th. We are now in Week 3, which is dedicated to South Asian Culture and Arts. As a longtime appreciator of South Asian culture and food, I am joining @minaal.reads in showcasing some of my favorite South Asian foods, accompanied by 2 upcoming reads written by South Asian authors. One of the most exciting aspects of our recent move has been discovering so many wonderful South Asian restaurants, and a wonderful Indian grocery store just ten minutes from our house! After trying all the local SA restaurants, we have settled on our favorite one, and make it our friday night treat to get takeout from here, and make a quick pop into the Indian grocery. I love exposing my daughter to different cultures and foods, and am very proud that downright her favorite food in the world is saag paneer. Shown here along with saag paneer, is another favorite, Navratan Korma, some onion kulcha, and raita on the side. Also pictured are some of our favorite snacks and treats from the Indian market. I been so grateful to expand our palette to incorporate traditional South Asian ingredients like paneer cheese, and rich spices. In addition to the foods, I love to learn about South Asian culture through films and books. 2 books that are high on my TBR are The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri and Marriage Clock by Zara Raheem. Before I write anything else I want to say how proud I am of myself for surpassing my reading goal. Initially my goal was to read 12 books this year but I just completed my 13th book!! Woo hoo! Let’s see if I can make it 24 by the end of 2021. I really wanted to finish this book in one sitting but that’s hard to do with an almost 4 year old. So it took me a few days and OMG what a fun read. Since I’m from a Southeast Asian background I understood everything that Leila was going through. In our culture, arranged marriages are very common. When I mean arranged I mean that parents will find a potential match and you meet the person to see if you connect. That’s exactly how my husband and I met.
