𝘽𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙁𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 + 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 The Curse of Saints is the first an adult fantasy trilogy. Aya is her queen’s spymaster and is forced to work together with her rival (and enemy of sorts), the queen’s enforcer Will, to uncover a plot to return forbidden powers to their world. But when she discovers the same powers emerging within her, she must find allies within and without her kingdom including Will, the man she has long hated. Can she trust him to help her figure out what is going on? The book offers a pretty interesting world with rich history of gods and magic but suffers from having such an insufferable lead in Aya. She is just so angry at Will when she should actually be looking at a mirror and realizing that she is the problem. I just could not stand her. Meanwhile, I did like Will a bit more although he does come across less dark (like the book keeps trying to write him as) and more edgy. He does gaud Aya a lot and clearly keeps secrets that don’t need keeping, leading to even more drama between them. When they both come to an understanding, the book does actually get better, but then worsens again when another unnecessary secret of Will’s is exposed and Aya once again jumps to the worst conclusion. Thankfully, the book is relatively broskly paced with blissfully short chapters (ala James Patterson which may or may not be a compliment as a comparison). Another thing is that the author wrote this as an adult fantasy, but it just reads super YA (you’ll get it when you read it). The characters are early 20s but act very juvenile like emotionally immature teenagers. Then there was the love triangle when a prince from a neighboring kingdom comes into the picture (and gets his own PoV chapters) a third into the book. Things I find acceptable in YA may not be as forgivable in an adult novel. There really was no reason to have these characters be so young and in the highest positions of their kingdoms in a purported adult novel. The Curse of Saints doesn’t feel like an adult fantasy and isn’t made better by its mostly insufferable protagonist. I really liked getting more of Mariko’s spunky attitude in this one. I also liked the building of her and Okami’s love story. Thoughts on a Book Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas “What,” she breathed, “is that?” She pointed at the twenty-foot oak doors, her eyes widening at the dragons that grew out of either side of the stone wall. Four-legged dragons—not vicious, bipedal wyverns like those on the royal seal. “The library.” If I had known, I should have known, what this story was all about, I would have jumped in long before I had read the ACOTAR series. This was a superb tale of royal family, assassins, a glass castle, and what lengths people will go to all in the name of winning. Celaena Sardothien is a bad-ass young woman fighting for her life, and what she finds during her stay, (imprisonment with benefits?) is nothing short of life altering. Obviously, I’ve jumped into the next book in the series, it’s one that I’m enjoying savoring, and glad I have friends I can discuss and jump to conclusions with. “Names are not important. ✨Highly recommend this book, if you like a somewhat darker fantasy that is a standalone. ✨ -> The Whispering Dark - Kelly Andrew 🪻🪻🪻🪻🪻 Read this as a buddy-read with my friend @tenshimarii While is was super intrigued by the synopsis, I did not see the creep factor coming as much as is it did; and let me tell you - I loved that. I love a book with a hint of paranormal and something creeping in the dark/ the dark itself creeping, so this was just food for my soul. The characters are super interesting, even the side characters, the only thing that confused me in the beginning, was that the main character is supposed to be deaf, but she kept turning and reacting to sounds, while also saying that she had issues with following conversations in class ect. So we were a bit confused about it, but there is an explanation for it and once we got it, it was perfectly fine. I guess I expected a little bit more of a representation of deafness, but since this book wasn’t about that, it was just one aspect of the character, it was totally fine in the end. Oh and before I forget … the slow burn in this book was giving everything. I loved it so much. Overall I just dearly wish there was more of this world and the people in it, especially with some of the things hinted at in the end. So here to hoping the author might change her mind in the future and will give us more. I know this is a beloved series, so please don’t come for me 🫣. This is a total rant review I wrote right after I was done 😅. Yes, I did dnf after my usual 100 pages that I give each book, that translated to the audiobook, was about 2.5 hours. 2.5 hours of my life I will never get back. While I was listening, I went to Goodreads to put it in as currently reading and while I did that I was already like … oh boy. This will be painful. I read through some of the reviews and man, even the good ones were … kinda bad? Many said that I felt ripped from Twilight and I have to agree. Some liked that it was so close to it, most seemed to hate it, I am a part of the second group. It was SO much like Twilight, that I wondered who even wrote this, like how young a person is it? Is it another published fanfic? And when I saw that this was written by an English professor, I could not believe it, since the writing style was also kinda bad. Overall I could not bring myself to give it one more minute. Synopsis: My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods...or monsters. I still can’t decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. The world is so neat, the heroine is a character I like a lot (that’s usually a challenge for me), and the prose is gorgeous! Wha about you? What are you currently reading? 😄

⭐️ A Curse So Dark and Lonely ⭐️ This was a very solid YA fantasy book, and I enjoyed it immensely. I'm always down for a Beauty and the Beast retelling, and this was a fun take. There was the right amount of mystery surrounding the curse and a good slow natural progression between the main characters as they got to know each other. I also feel like dual POV really enhanced the plot. The pacing was also on point. It was the kind of book that I just wanted to keep reading, and I flew through it. I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy and definitely recommend if you like YA fantasy.

I love Suren and of course feel for her and the life she has had growing up, always feeling like an outsider then comes charming Prince Oak who needs her help. There’s romance, action and deception. My thoughts so far I have been loving the vibe of this book so far!! There’s elements of fantasy ✨⚔️💜🐉 that I’ve been craving for so long! It’s got gods and goddesses, and monsters and war and slight rivalry between two fated lovers. It was a good book, made me feel all the things, but it wasn’t the best finale I have ever read. Usually I get the feeling of Cassandra writing better and better books. So I expected this book to be an epic finale. For some reason, it wasn’t. I thought that the ending was very predictable and that early on. The battles were there, but not as grand and they didn’t feel as desperate and urgent as others have in the past. Something that happened in the book, that should have made a huge impact on the reader, kinda fell flat to me, even tho I was really sad it happened. I almost forgot it did, until it was mentioned again. Still, I had fun reading this and can’t wait to see/read more of this world. Synopsis: Cordelia Carstairs has lost everything that matters to her.  I finished A Door in the Dark by Scott Reintgen for a young adult fantasy book club. This one was so much fun, a perfect quick, easy read for the middle of the week. Rival students at a magic school are accidentally teleported out into the wilderness and have to find their way home. The tone is a mix of fun and creepy, and the protagonist Ren is a wonderfully conniving girl. Most of our club binged this and immediately bought the sequel. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

In the past, I wouldn’t even consider posting a pic of me like this - no makeup except lip gloss, crooked eyebrows (one is higher than the other naturally), hair is pretty messy, etc. But you know what? This is how I look most of the time & it’s important to me to be real. On that note, it’s been a really tough year for me. It’s been one thing after another, from health drama for both me & my daughter, financial pressure because of unexpected expenses (new furnace, leaking basement & roof, etc.) coupled with my inability to work much because of said health issues. But, I know this will pass & things will get easier again. I’m not toxically positive, or at least I don’t think I am, but I do believe that the energy you put out into the world affects it and you.
