🐌 Feature Friday! 🐌 QOTD: If you could be famous, what would it be for? Ashlee - A food critic sounds fun 😋 Michelle - Travel photography! Thank you to @prhaudio for the ALC and @berkleyromance for the eARC. All thoughts are our own. From @bookswithnopictures: Christa’s father disappeared and was presumed dead. What followed was a rollercoaster of emotional upheaval and ultimate stability in the job of her heart. Her father shows up and the world takes notice of the family. Being in the spotlight again seems to be a joy for only her father. This was a pleasant surprise to read. I so enjoyed Abbi’s Nina Hill and this one carried the humor and quirky characterizations I expect from her. It did take me a few chapters to get that Christa is not in fact a mermaid (cue self-mockery) but I really loved the family drama and the appeal of an unrequited sort of crush turned into a he-fell-first on second meeting. Overall, I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys coming of age sibling dynamics and the bonds that push them to stick together through the storms of adulthood. Christa’s ending was exactly what I love to see in a modern romance. From @just_talking_to_my_shelf: The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is one of my favorites so I was really excited to dive into Christa Comes Out of Her Shell! Christa had me hooked from the start, and I love that we got to see her at the job she loves so much at the start of the book! I thought all the characters were well developed and well balanced. I really loved how baffled Christa was by her emotionally mature sisters and how they didn’t match up to the mean girls in her memory! The thing I loved most about this story was that the romance was natural and almost easy. They had an instant reconnection and the romance developed with minimal drama, which allowed the family storyline to lean into the drama without the book feeling over the top! I really enjoyed this book! It had Abbi’s great sense of humor and sharp writing style. Gaaaaahhhhhh! Finished @abbiwaxman’s newest novel #christacomesoutofhershell and it’s bittersweet, as always. I’m gonna miss Christa, but I’m happy to have gotten to know her. And students! The quote before the text started is from #janeeyre - who says Brontë isn’t relevant in 2024?! Anyhow, that’s three #abbiwaxman novels read in the past month, and I’m the better for it. Her way of creating a tone through setting is transformative. I felt the beach and the sand and the warm CA sun as I read this book. ☀️

🐌𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐲 𝐀𝐛𝐛𝐢 𝗪𝐚𝐱𝐦𝐚𝐧 🐚 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: Quirky characters, humor, family dynamics and romance abound in this second chance romance. 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: This was as much a story about family and healing old wounds as it was about love. I adore Waxman’s quirky characters and Christa with her love of science, her dedication to snail research and her battle to overcome tumultuous teenage years definitely won me over. The story itself was pretty out there - Christa’s long presumed deceased father returns home after 25 years and thrusts them all back into the limelight, turning everyone’s lives upside down. Then, add in an old crush with an undeniable current attraction. I enjoyed this. At first, I was prepping for Steve Irwin/Bindi vibes because of the father/daughter animal show angle but this proved to be much more than that. There was a lot of growth and self-discovery which is what I’ve really come to love about Waxman’s characters. Plus, there was romance! Nathan was swoon-worthy and I am always here for a good HEA. This was a bit steamier than Waxman’s previous books - the door was wide open. You already know I had no problem with that. Let the sparks fly and the steam sizzle! The audiobook (thank you @prhaudio ) was good . It was an easy listen and the entire book moved along at a fairly quick pace. If you enjoy books with quirky characters, out there premises, lots of family drama, romance and some steam you won’t want to miss this one. She lives on a remote island studying snails when she receives word that her famous scientist father, Jasper has returned after a plane crash 25 years ago. She flies home to be with her family during this time and she’s not ready to be thrust back into the spotlight. After her father disappeared, Christa had a hard time coping and began some party girl ways. She was often in the news for raucous behavior when she decided to live a quieter life. When she returns home, she reunites with an old friend that turns romantic. Between her new love and dealing with her father’s stories that just don’t add up why he was missing for so long. Christa was an entertaining listen that did hold my attention, but I have a feeling it won’t be very memorable in a few days. It was also much longer than necessary. Jasper is a horrible person, and even worse dad. I cannot imagine how you just disappear from your family just to waltz back in and pretend nothing happened. you know who loves the earth? christa. christa loves the earth and all the creatures it sustains, and she makes a living out of that love and joy and respect. before she knew anything at all, she knew she loved where she was placed, and i think we could all find the lesson in that if we looked hard enough. "scientists fall deeply in love with something and spend their lives obsessing over it." 🪴 the absolute best part of reading something by an author you love is that there isn't an expectation for perfection. you open a book, and you don't care what it's about because the authors brain syncs so perfectly with yours. @abbiwaxman is like that for me, so completely intentional in her delivery of humor and love. i spend every second i'm in her world smiling, laughing, and living a life that reflects a part of mine. with christa, it was the feeling of wanting to be lonely. intentionally alone. taking yourself out of the equation, purposely making yourself unseen. she grew up in the light, and when the light went out, she just wanted to be separate. in a world full of people asking to be seen, she just wanted to be passed by. i understand that so thoroughly, so completely, that once again, i never wanted to leave. and the best part? the book refers to her coming out of her shell... yet nobody who mattered pushed her to do so. she was given the opportunity to be herself on her own timeline, and be herself because she felt like she was ready for it. sure, there is outside pressure, but the choice was always her own. whether it was her mom, her sisters, or the boy she grew up crushing on. she got to be herself in a way that suited the tiny life she wanted taking care of the earth. the lack of judgement over wanting a tiny life stood out to me so much in this book, because sometimes, all a girl wants to do is study sea snails in the middle of the indian ocean. sometimes, all a girl (me) wants to do is read books and crochet little trinkets for her friends. thank you abbi for making small lives so glamorous!!! thank you for nina, and frances, emily and jess, and laura, and lilian. thank you for christa. we deserve love stories, too. happy earth day!!! 🌎

BOOK REVIEW! ✨📖✨📖✨📖✨📖✨📖✨📖✨📖✨ Every time I picked up “Christa Comes Out of Her Shell”, I was whisked away on an emotional journey with this story. Firstly, I love this cover! The sea animals!!! Abbi Waxman’s writing jumps right off of the page from the very first page to the last. Her characters feel like such real people; I could envision each and every one, and Ms. Waxman’s storytelling is full of powerful and poignant themes. Christa loves to study sea life, quietly away from the world she has known in the past. However, soon, she receives news that brings her back home, and many feelings, both past and present, and experiences are brought to the surface. I do not want to say too much about the plot due to spoilers, but, I will say, this novel truly has so much in it: family, science, romance heartbreak, grief, surprises, memories, warmth, heartbreaking moments, heartwarming moments, and so, so much more. I recommend this book! I look forward to reading what the author writes next! Christa Comes Out Of Her Shell by Abbi Waxman I had a really good time while reading this! I adored Christa and her family, and Nate is definitely a swoon-worthy guy. I loved Christa's obsession with ocean-centered scientific facts. I also loved her reaction upon seeing her father long thought dead appear in front of her. The moments after that cemented my desire for Christa and Nate to get together. Watching Christa and her family work through all the heavy things that were caused by the supposed death of their father was really heartwarming, and I loved the growth they all showed throughout the story. There were plenty of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat, and thoroughly entertained throughout the whole book. Christa is happily living her life, researching snails in the middle of the Indian Ocean, when she gets a life-changing call. Her famous father, renowned naturalist and TV personality, has returned from the dead. 25 years ago, Jasper Little disappeared in the wilds of Alaska after his plane crashed. The implications of Jaspers return for Christa, her sisters, and her mother, are extreme. From where he has been for the past 25 years, to his former manager's plans for their future, the ground keeps moving beneath Christa's feet. Luckily, there is Nathan, a long time friend. The two have an undeniable attraction, but it is his caring and good heart that made me like Nathan so much. The author Abbi Waxman has done a wonderful job of creating a complex story with real emotion as well as characters that I was rooting for. The entire story, I kept hoping that Christa would be able to get back to her beloved snails. The ending exceeded my expectations and left me happy and satisfied. Both heartwarming and funny, Abbi Waxman has put together a delightful and well paced rom-com. I will be looking forward to reading more from the author. She studies sea snails on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Christa’s life is thrown into chaos when her once thought dead dad, was in fact alive and had been hanging out in Alaska all this time. Now she and her family are in the spotlight. When her fathers story starts to develop cracks, Christa fears she will lose herself, her potential relationships, and most importantly, any chance of going back to her quiet life with her snails. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect going into this book, but it ended up being a beautiful women’s fiction book. I absolutely loved Christa and the growth that she went through over the course of this book, it was amazing. I wish I could run away to an island and study literally anything for years so I could escape people, and that is exactly what Christa was able to do. When she’s called back and learns that her father, who was supposedly dead, is in fact quite alive and just ran away from his family instead of facing his problems. This whole revelation throws a wrench in Christa’s life as you can imagine, and she has to pivot into something she isn’t entirely comfortable with. I really enjoyed the writing style of this book. The author’s style was quick and witty; it held my interest and made me chuckle. I loved it. I also enjoyed that while romance was present in this book, it wasn’t the focus of this book, rather Christa’s growth was, so that was nice. I enjoyed reading this and the twists were fun, the writing was enjoyable, and the characters were fun. Behind the normal questions of how, what, and why, Christa is conflicted on a deeper level. Unlike her sisters, Christa has hardly any memories of the man who is her father in name, the scientist in her skeptical of the story of his supposed whereabouts. But as his manager and her family realize a renewed interest could very well generate new income, most of them are game. The bigger question however, still remains. Can Christa emerge from the debacle with her dignity intact? Christa Comes Out of Her Shell was one of my most anticipated reads of the year by a favorite author of mine, Abbi Waxman. Known for her now signature blend of quirkiness and calamity, I went in expecting nothing less. However, this time around I found the offbeat charm a little bit off the charts. I also should mention there’s a love story thrown into the mix, but that’s what it sort of felt like-something that was thrown in rather than given the attention it deserved. While I still love largely love the underrated Waxman’s work, this particular story lacked that something special despite having a premise full of promise. Students! I did a brave thing that was so fulfilling. I drove to LA on a whim, ON A SCHOOL NIGHT, when I heard #abbiwaxman saying on Insta that she was going to launch her new book #christacomesoutofhershell at her local bookstore @chevaliersbooks. And I was even brave enough to raise my hand and ask her a question, even though my voice shook and everyone was staring at me. And she was just so kind and generous in her response and then when she signed her new book for me, she even said she’d sign the other four I brought along, which was probably asking too much of her but she made it seem like no big deal. And then there was sushi after while I tried to calm down and then Mrs Murillo insisted we get #frosties on the way home because I said I wasn’t sure I’d ever even had one before. I mean. It was just such an amazing night, zero of it was planned, and much of it was simultaneously right up my alley and wildly out of my comfort zone. Happy pub day to author Abbi Waxman who writes quirky characters like no one else. Scientist Christa is happy researching sea snails on a remote island far away from her family when she gets a call that her famous father (think American Steve Irwin—at least that’s what I did) who was presumed dead after a plane crash years ago is very much alive. Christa needs to come home to help her mother and sisters deal with the news and possibly reconnect with her father—a man she barely remembers, but one whose legacy ruled her childhood and teenage years. When she gets home, she’s also reunited with a childhood friend, Nathan, and the instant attraction she feels for him makes the already complicated situation even more complicated. I loved so much about this book. I found Christa’s voice delightful and almost immediately connected to her even though we’re very different people (for instance, I have no interest in snails). And I loved the family dynamics in the book. Every one of the characters was really interesting in their own way. I was especially drawn to Christa’s mom who was a really strong woman forced to grapple with mistakes she made raising three daughters on her own. Initially, I also really loved the romance. Nathan was a great, swoon-worthy character and I loved the scenes between him and Christa early on. By the end of the book he took a turn towards being a little too perfect, but I know that’s a hard line to draw in these stories. I still enjoyed their arc. This is my fourth Abbi Waxman book, and it was much steamier than any I’ve read before. I’ve definitely read steamier books, but I wasn’t expecting the open door aspect in this one. The audiobook was fabulous. Jesse Vilinsky is the main narrator although there’s also a male narrator for the news coverage in the book. Vilinsky does a great job bringing Christa to life and her male voices are to die for. I would absolutely recommend this one if you like family dramas and quirky characters. Would you like living on a remote island or would you go crazy like me?

I’m a huge fan of Waxman’s writing because she has a gift for creating the most wonderful characters. They’re charming, quirky, and just so lovable that you can’t help but root for them to overcome whatever struggles they are facing. When we meet Christa, she is happily studying snails on a remote island in the Indian Ocean. That is, until she receives a phone call that rocks her world. Her father, a beloved TV star who was presumed killed in a plane crash 25 years ago, has suddenly turned up, alive and well. As much as Christa would love to stay on her little island, she knows she has to go home, both to meet her dad and to confront the demons of her own past. I adored Christa right from the start and absolutely loved the journey of personal growth that she goes through in this story. Christa was so young when her dad went missing that she barely knew him but both his immense fame and the media circus surrounding his disappearance impacted her young life tremendously. There were people in her life who hurt and betrayed her, making her close herself off from people. I loved watching her gradually come into her own and confront those who had hurt her, which in turn allows her to more freely open her heart to those who would never hurt her. While it definitely takes a backseat to Christa’s personal journey, there is also a delightful second chance romance with a childhood friend in this story. While some of what Christa and her family faces veers into some heavy topics, Waxman keeps things from getting too heavy by infusing the story with her signature humor and warmth. I especially enjoyed listening to the audiobook because the narrators, Jesse Vilinksy & Jonathan Todd Ross, do such a wonderful job capturing both the heartwarming and humorous aspects of the story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 ❓QOTD: Do you consider yourself to be an extrovert or an introvert?

The over-the-top narrative kept me thoroughly entertained. What truly intrigued me in the story was the exploration of the intricate family relationships. The journey of self-discovery that Christa embarks on, and her evolving understanding of her sisters, mother, and ‘not-dead’ father, kept me engrossed and turning the pages. Christa is a delightful character with her quick wit and sarcastic observations about the people around her. Her narration of the story was a highlight for me, as I found her perspective and humor to be incredibly enjoyable and fast-paced. When I was asked to blurb this one, I was 1) a little starstruck tbh because THE BOOKISH LIFE OF NINA HILL was one of the first and best books I read when I got back into reading for fun after grad school and 2) super excited because it sounded like such a great story. And it was!!!! I didn't want to put it down. Abbi consistently writes the best slightly prickly introverts, the swooniest love interests, and the most entertainingly dysfunctional families. Book Review 📚⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you to Netgalley for providing an eARC of this novel in 2019 in exchange for an honest review. My deepest apologies for my review being so egregiously late. The experience reading this novel was at times extremely surreal. Our main character Nina is introverted, an only child, a lover of books and animals over people, unable to clearly navigate social cues and situations, meticulously living in the past while trying to stay in the present, and very slowly rearranging her needs as her story unfolds around her. There were so many moments where experiences I have had as someone who claims to be neurodivergent, and who also experiences daily anxiety, were finally written out on the page in ways I’ve never been able to verbalize or explain to anyone else. Reading about Nina was like looking in a mirror and discovering there are in fact two of us, or more than one of me out there in the world (or in this case a fictional book). Adult Assembly Required by Abbi Waxman In the world of The Bookish Life of Nina Hill, we meet a new fantastic group of charming characters. Laura is new to LA and moves into a guest house with 5 roommates. She is dealing with anxiety after a traumatic car accident and life changing decision to move across the country from her controlling family. Luckily, the new people in her life are understanding, funny and delightful. I loved this book. It was a tad slow, but I never lost interest in the character growth. And I simply loved all the characters. It would make an incredible movie or tv show, with a house full of quirky and kind people. There were moments that made me laugh out loud, heartbreaking situations and a million sweet ones. #gelesen "Other People's Houses" von Abbi Waxman Nachdem mir "The Bookish Life of Nina Hill" so gut gefallen hat, wollte ich gleich mehr von Abbi Waxman lesen. Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. "Other People's Houses" ist eine turbulente Geschichte, bei der es um vier benachbarte Familien geht, allerdings nicht gerade jugendfrei. Die Perspektive wechselt ständig zwischen den Müttern, Vätern und Kindern. Der Alltag ist sehr realistisch dargestellt. Die vielen verschiedenen Perspektiven sind sehr interessant, besonders die unterschiedlichen Ansichten der Männer haben mich teilweise wirklich überrascht. New Review. I read Other People’s Houses by Abbi Waxman. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I could not put this book down. As with every other one of Abbi Waxman‘s books that I’ve read, I adore the characters even more than the incredible stories they inhabit. I love the characters’ good and generous traits as well as their flawed and unpleasant aspects because Abbi’s characters always feel real to me and never one-dimensional. They aren’t caricatures or OTT, they are normal people going about their everyday lives, and that in itself can be fascinating to read in the right story. Frances Bloom in this story is now added to my growing list of favourite Abbi characters including Nina Hill, Lillian Girvan, Laura Costello and Polly! Frances is a carpool mom that just so happens to know more of the neighbourhood secrets than she ever planned to. Many of those secrets are personal ones she wish she didn’t know and would never repeat to others. But when she unwittingly witnesses her neighbour Anne having an affair with one of the other neighbours, her decision to stay out of the situation can only last so long once Anne’s husband throws Anne out of the family house a few days later. What Frances once considered her “settled” life is rocked by this development. It leads her and her husband to question their own marriage, its health and the future of their lives together. The adage that you never know what is going on in someone else’s house is fully explored in this book to genuine and honest degrees through a frank and compelling human story from start to finish. This book offers laughter, tears, heartfelt moments (both happy and sad), but overall a fascinating narrative on every day life and the relationships and situations we take for granted that can change at a moment’s notice. I highly recommend this book along with all of Abbi’s other novels.

No a tady potká zahradníka… A dál vám neřeknu, co bude. Lilian je sympatická, má dvě dcery, které se se smrtí svého otce také těžce vyrovnávají. #gelesen "The Bookish Life of Nina Hill" von Abbi Waxman Nina hat sich in ihrer Einsamkeit und ihren Routinen behaglich eingerichtet. Sie ist einfach gern allein und liest zuhause viele Bücher. Aber sie ist nicht einfach nur schüchtern, sondern sie ist mindestens introvertiert und hat auch eine Angstneurose (heißt das so auf deutsch?). Die vielen neuen Familienmitglieder prasseln wie eine Lawine über sie her. Die Liebesgeschichte hätte man meiner Meinung nach nicht gebraucht. Auch wenn die Liebeserklärung am Ende wirklich schön ist. Aber mit ihrem Job in einem von der Pleite bedrohten Buchladen und der neuen Familie hätte es schon genug zu erzählen gegeben. After her father’s disappearance following a plane crash, her life went a bit off the rails, and she wound up as a bit of a recluse studying snails on a small island off the coast of Africa. Christa’s life is once again turned upside down when her father is found alive in a remote part of Alaska 20 years after his he was assumed to be dead. She has to return home to California to be reunited with her long-lost father, as well as her childhood crush, Nathan. Thoughts: I fell in love with Abbi’s writing last year when I read The Bookish Life of Nina Hill, and I think I loved this one even more! I think this one just checked a lot of very specific boxes for me - Christa is a woman in STEM, she is very quirky, and I love a second chance romance. I am also a big fan of each chapter heading including an animal fun fact 🤓. This was such a unique and fun storyline, and while the circumstances were crazy, the characters were very relatable. There are plenty swoon-worthy romance moments along with lots of delightfully irreverent humor from our lovably sarcastic main characters. Abbi’s writing is fun and charming, and I highly recommend this heartwarming book! Familj och vänner tycker att det är dags för henne att börja dejta igen, Lili tycker att de ska ge henne utrymme att fortsätta sörja på sitt sätt. När Lili får i uppdrag att illustrera ett stort verk om olika växter anmäler hennes arbetsgivare henne till en odlingskurs, där hon får lära sig både om växter och om sig själv. Åh hjälp, det var svårt att sammanfatta handlingen till den här boken utan att låta alldeles klyschig men den är bättre än det låter! Jag tyckte om både Lili och hennes döttrar och boken var skriven i en trevlig ton med härligt språk, både humoristisk och sorglig. En liten pärla i feelgood-djungeln!
