Tracy Borman’s explores the climate of hysteria towards witches that peaked during James 1st reign by presenting some brilliant research detailing the environments of paranoia and suspicion in England and Scotland. By focusing the main narrative of the book on the single case of Joan Flowers and her two daughters Margaret and Philippa apparent malevolent and supernatural hold over their Aristocratic employer The Earl of Rutland and his family leading to their trial and execution Tracy provides a deeply insightful look at how the hysteria surrounding witchcraft was used and manipulated for political gain and to uphold the persecution of Catholicism. Through referencing various different cases throughout the book we are presented a deeply misogynistic time period highlighting the dangers of being a woman in a poorer class. This ended up being a book of two halves for me ultimately; it started out incredibly strong - very provocative, original, gave me lots of food for thought - but lost some steam as it went on. I was slightly let down by the latter part of the book, and I felt like the direction of the book got somewhat confused. Having said that, I still think credit is due for what the first half of the book does; it raised some really interesting points, and of course I loved the A Little Life book club discussion scene that we got in an early chapter. 😂 I also really connected with the protagonist and loved her witty, dry sense of humour. Lost You by Haylen Beck is an emotional thriller. Libby is on her first vacation with her four year old son when a parent’s worst nightmare strikes - Ethan goes missing. Holy Moly this book still has me morally conflicted as I learn more about the nuances of surrogacy. The character development in this book had me hooked and I really had no idea where it was going until it all wrapped up in the very very end (last 15 pages or so). It’s National Book Day and it’s also My Birthday! For my birthday I’m prioritising some much needed chill time with my favourite trilogy of all time, Phillip Pullman’s 'His Dark Materials' I read through the entire trilogy during 2020 lockdown, I can honestly say that reading these books changed how I viewed fiction writing. Never have I read such a deep exploration of character, the lines blurred between what makes a good or evil character, the complexities of the human psyche explored through such originality and creativity. Pullmans writing treats the reader to such rich detail to the world building without compromising the story. I can talk about these books forever!! (If you've not read it then what are you currently reading?) ⚔️🪽🌫️🌊🗡️🌟🤖 Final warning for spoilers ⚠️ Overall there were parts I loved and parts that left me disappointed with this book. I loved the link to ACOTAR world and seeing some of the characters again. Also, the mentioned links to TOG. I really.enjoyed the history of Midgard and how the Fae escaped enslavement in Pyrinthian and the battles on Midgard. Most of all I liked the fact that the Fae ancestors weren't all good, they were very gray in their treatment of humans, but they were slightly better than the Asteri. I feel like this is more like actual human history, plus it feels more real that it was just good Vs evil but bad people fighting worse people. I was a bit disappointed with the lack of ACOTAR characters in the novel as a whole. We didn't really get to see Feyre, Mor etc. Rhys, Amren and Cassian had a couple of lines. Nesta and Azriel were amazing of course. I thought (I think a lot of people thought this) that the ACOTAR characters would have had a bigger part to play. In my mind leading up to this book I could picture Avengers Endgame portals of characters from other SJM worlds joining in the fight. So when this didn't happen I was a bit disappointed that they were only there for the history part. I do think having all the world's fighting together would have been extremely difficult to write (it'd be hard enough in a film), so I do understand why SJM didn't go down this route. Lidia and Ruhn are by far the best characters of this book. Loved Lidia's development especially. I didn't feel the chemistry from Bryce and Hunt compared to the other books. It felt more like they were on separate pages and argued more. Ithan - I'm not sure Sigrid was even needed as a plot line in this series. Overall, I found the conclusion satisfying, I was content with it. I just didn't feel the rollercoaster of emotions like I had with other SJM books. Full review on goodreads

Michelle Paver just is a great writer and storyteller, so I feel like I’m in safe hands when I pick up a book of hers; she’s generally very good at building up atmosphere, and each story I’ve read of hers has felt well researched. However, I was less impressed with the plot and horror elements of Thin Air - it didn’t deliver as much spookiness as I had hoped for. First completed read of the year for 2024 was The Night in Question by Kathleen Glasgow & Liz Lawson ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars The second book in the Agatha's series follows on from when a student is attacked at the Sadie Hawkins dance. Alice stumbles upon the scene and is quick to chase the perpetrator. Iris is quick to lock down the crime scene to preserve the evidence before the police arrive. The two teens can't help but investigate the attack but will the consequences be higher this time and just what has this case got to do with the accidental death of famous actress Mona Moody This was a good medium paced read which switches POV between Alice and Iris in their quest to solve the mystery. I enjoyed the who dunit and I did guess parts of the plot rather quickly. Feels fitting to be reading Katherine May’s Wintering on winter solstice! ❄️ I received this book as part of a secret santa at work, and it’s the perfect gift since it’s not something I think I would have picked out myself, but I’m really enjoying it - in my opinion, these are some of the best gifts you can receive (and it’s a pretty hard feat to buy me a book I don’t have!). ‘Wintering’ is a phrase that the author uses to refer to the ‘fallow’ periods in life - periods of depression, isolation, or burnout. In the book, she explores - through lessons from literature, mythology, and the natural world - how we can find beauty and renewal through the process of ‘wintering’ and embrace the opportunities that it offers. It is worth noting that the author has a lot of privilege and some of the things she does are definitely not viable or affordable for some people - for example, she takes time out of work and is able to holiday during this period, and there’s lots of talk of pickling things in expensive alcohols. 😂 I have seen other reviewers note this, so I just wanted to acknowledge that it is something I also thought whilst reading it. Having said this, I don’t necessarily think this is a terrible thing if you approach the book as a memoir rather than a ‘self-help’ book - I’m not sure what the author intended it as, but to me, the kind of things she does in the book to deal with ‘wintering’ don’t feel super prescriptive and so I don’t want to be too critical of this aspect. All in all, I’ve enjoyed cozying up with this book, and the writing is really beautiful. Book Review - That festive feeling by @heidi_swain 🎄✨ Would it be Christmas without a Heidi Swain book and yes this time we are back in Nightingale Square. This definitely got me feeling festive! Oh how I loved this sweet story with wonderful characters, my favourite two being Holly and May. Also a great community spirit, which is what we all want at Christmas and in a beautiful setting. This was a lovely story based on friendship and romance, but it was the friendship side that really melted my heart. What a sweet and endearing friendship they had. I did enjoy reading things unfold with the big bear, a slow burner on that front 🤭 I also love a serendipitous encounter. Which made for a great story. It was the sweetest book to get lost in.
