Lost You by Haylen Beck is an emotional thriller. Libby is on her first vacation with her four year old son when a parent’s worst nightmare strikes - Ethan goes missing. Holy Moly this book still has me morally conflicted as I learn more about the nuances of surrogacy. The character development in this book had me hooked and I really had no idea where it was going until it all wrapped up in the very very end (last 15 pages or so). 🏠 The House of Ashes 🏠 By Stuart Neville This was a recommendation from my hooman's aunt, who didn't warn us about how dark and sad it was. Nevertheless, it's a powerful book that will stay with you for ages. We follow Sara Keane whose abusive husband Damien has moved them from England to his native Northern Ireland for a "fresh start". They are living in a house recently bought by Damien's father Francie that's undergoing renovations. Early one morning an elderly hooman called Mary comes to their door in a distressed state and covered in blood. She says that it's her house and that the children need her, but Damien dismisses her and just drives her back to the care home she lives in. However Sara is curious, and begins to delve into the mysteries and horror that the house holds. We also follow Mary as a young girl, who is enslaved along with two other women by the father and two sons who own the house and accompanying farm. These chapters describe the violence and abuse that the women suffer, and they are not for the faint-hearted. There's also a supernatural element - the children, who appear to both Sara and Mary. Sara and Mary's stories mirror each other as they suffer at the hands of men and try to escape. The book is filled with men who use and abuse women to get what they want, but there are also decent men who try to help. Ultimately Sara and Mary must become their own saviours, and despite the horrors in this book, the ending offers some hope. I give it three out of five tail wags 🐶

Dům pod jasany byl pro mě velkým překvapením, protože anotace toho moc neprozrazuje, a tak jsem příběh postupně odhaloval s každou další přečtenou stránkou. Pokud vám můžu radit, nic víc si o této knize také nezjišťujte. Úplně vám bude stačit, když si přečtete anotaci a budete ode mě vědět, že je to skvělá knížka, která v sobě ukrývá hodně smutný a silný příběh. Na první pohled by se mohlo zdát, že jde o mysteriózní, až hororový příběh, ale nenechte se mýlit. Jedná se o psychologický thriller a mysteriózní prvek se jen lehce proplétá určitými místy. Příběh je vyprávět z několika pohledů a ze dvou časových rovin. Příběh v přítomnosti sledujeme očima naší hlavní hrdinky a příběh z minulosti sledujeme pohledem několika postav, které se skvěle doplňují. Příběh je psaný hodně sugestivně, přitom jednoduše a děsivé zároveň. Ačkoliv je příběh průhledný a v podstatě víte, co se stane, vůbec to knize neubírá na dramatičnosti. Možná se vám bude zdát jméno autora neznámé, což byste sice měli pravdu, ale tento autor píše i pod pseudonymem Haylen Beck, který u nás vydal thriller "Byly tady a už nejsou", o kterém se v knižním světě kdysi hodně mluvilo a je mimochodem také hodně dobrý. Až tedy budete zase někdy v knihkupectví či knihovně a zahlédnete tam Dům pod jasany, tak si ho přidejte do košíku. Určitě nebudete litovat a budete ji pak doporučovat stejně, jako teď já 🙂. The House of Ashes by Stuart Neville I found this in the library and I’d not heard of the author before. It’s set in Ireland and told in a dual timeframe through a few points of view. Although I really enjoyed it and it all came together nicely, I think it’s only 3 stars from me. The past voices were written with Irish twangs which although added authenticity, I found it hard to read. I also thought it was a bit drawn out and could have spent more time in the present than it did. Dům pod jasany - Stuart Neville 273 str. 4⭐ Od autora jsem pod jeho pseudonymem Haylen Beck četla thriller Byly tady, a už nejsou. Což byl perfektní thriller a doporučuji. Když mi tedy Janička @literoza doporučovala tuto knihu a já zjistila, že jí napsal tentýž autor, hned jsem po ní v knihovně sáhla. Stuart Neville neboli Haylen Beck píše opravdu čtivé thrillery, které vás naplno vtáhnou do děje. Kniha má kratší kapitoly a je napsaná z pohledu několika postav. To na knihách vždy oceňuji, protože pak čtenář ve výsledku získá ucelenější obraz událostí. Kniha sleduje 2 časové roviny - přítomnost a události před cca 60 lety. A tady asi bude jediná výtka ke knize. Nebo ne přímo výtka, ale je škoda, že autor párkrát zmínil, co se před 60 lety stalo. Takže když sledujeme osudy těchto postav, víme, co je čeká a této lince vyprávění to dost ubralo na napětí. Ani samotný závěr nebyl vysloveně wow, nestalo se tam nic, co by mě posadilo na zadek. Z těchto 2 důvodů jsem nedala plné hodnocení. Jinak ale knihu mohu doporučit. I když víte, co se před 60 lety stalo, stejně vás zajímá, co tomu předcházelo a proč vše tak vyeskalovalo. Přítomnost byla velmi napínavá a já jsem se děsila, co ještě všechno hlavní hrdinku čeká. Příběhem se jako nit vine psychické a fyzické týrání. To jsem nečekala a jsem ráda, že toto téma autor do děje zapracoval. Ano, už bylo zpracováno mockrát a mohlo by se zdát, že už snad není potřeba dělat osvětu. Opak je ale pravdou. Pokud máte rádi mysteriózní romány/thrillery, rozhodně doporučuji. Já jsem se u knihy ani jednou nenudila. Dům pod jasany je označován jako mysteriozní thriller a s tím naprosto souhlasím. Pokud máte rádi v knihách duchy, můžete zkusit sáhnout po tomto titulu. Pozor ale - duchové zde nejsou zlo, není to žádný horor. 🏡 Do téhle knihy jsem šla bez jakýchkoliv předsudků, nikde jsem ji neviděla a neměla jsem tedy žádné představy, co od ni čekat. A velmi mile mě překvapila. Střídání časových linek čtenáře drží v napětí, kapitoly jsou relativně krátké a v obou linkách se vždy něco děje. Bavily mě obě, ačkoliv linka z minulosti byla určitě napínavější, i když už vám autor v podstatě prozradil, jak to dopadne - což někomu může vadit. Nečtete potom úplně kvůli tomu, abyste věděli, co se stalo, ale hlavně kvůli stylu psaní a tomu, jak se to stalo. Příběh mi nepřišel vůbec přitažený za vlasy, což je občas problém, který mi v knihách vadí. Tady si autor vystačil s docela obyčejnými zápletkami, které dokázal bravurně skloubit dohromady, propojit je ve funkční celek a čtenáře neunudit k smrti. 🏡 Je to thriller, který dokáže být dost emotivní - postavy si tu prochází mnohým. I když se jim ale děje neskutečné zlo, všechny ženské postavy jsou tu vykreslené jako silné ženy, které se jen tak nevzdají. Přes všechna těžká a silná témata nemáte na konci pocit, že by na vás padla těžká deka a snažila se vás zadusit. 🏡 I když jsem už několikrát v knihách četla o domácím násilí, únosech i věznění, tak mě příběh vůbec nenudil a obracela jsem stránky jednu za druhou, dokud jsem nedočetla. Je to čtivé, napínavé a jako plus se to odehrává v Irsku. 🏡 Díky diskuzi s Hankou @hanky_knizni_deník jsem zjistila, že autor napsal knihu Byly tady, a už nejsou, což je určitě známější dílo. Pokud jste ji četli a líbila se vám, určitě zkuste sáhnout i po Domu pod jasany. Já jsem byla spokojená, četla se skoro sama. She remembers the fire, and the house burning down. But she also remembers the children. The children who need her, whom she must protect. Sara soon becomes obsessed with what happened in that house nearly sixty years ago - the tragic, bloody night her husband never intended for her to discover. And Mary - silent for six decades - is finally ready to tell her story… 📚 A tale told over six decades, in terms of subject matter think along the lines of "The Last Thing To Burn". It's deeply dark and delves into the story of Mary and the road she has journeyed on – and it's not been an easy life, to say the least. There are some TRULY hateful characters written here but even so, the author manages to bring out the gentle, human side of some truly despicable beings (well, with one character at least). I really enjoyed this – if enjoy is the right word – and would definitely recommend it, especially if you like your reads a bit on the darker side and with a hint of the supernatural – but please check out any trigger warnings online beforehand. It's a story that comes full circle and I definitely wasn't expecting – and was perhaps slightly taken aback with – the ending that was delivered. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The House of Ashes is available now. 📖 #벨파스트의망령들 #스튜어트네빌 - ✒️ 이 책을 읽기 전에는 벨파스트가 뭔지도 몰랐음.ㅋ.ㅋ. 벨파스트는 북아일랜드의 수도이고 나도 자세히는 모르지만 북아일랜드는 분쟁과 갈등이 엄청났고 내전도 있었고 여러 가지 테러들까지 엉망진창이었던 듯. 이 책은 오랜 분쟁 끝에 나름의 평화가 찾아온 북아일랜드를 배경으로 하고 있다. 주인공 제리는 전직 IRA(아일랜드의 군인? 영국 입장에선 테러 조직) 소속 요원이고 12년 동안 감옥에 있다가 풀려났다. 사람을 죽였지만 본인의 의지가 아닌 주변 환경의 희생자로 분류되어 정치범으로 수감되었던 제리는 자신이 죽인 12명의 유령이 보이면서 매일을 고통 속에 살고 있다. 그러다가 정치인 친구를 만난 날 유령 중 하나인 소년 유령이 그 친구의 머리를 향해 총 모양을 한다. 죽여달라는 뜻. 죽이고 나니 그 소년 유령은 사라진다. 이렇게 12명의 유령을 없애가는 과정을 그린 소설이다. 되게 흥미진진하고 필력이 좋으신지 페이지터너 수준으로 빨리 읽었다. Myself and fellow writer @maddytemplemanwriter had a fantastic night at the Fun Lovin'Crime Writers night organised by @linghamsbooks on Wednesday. It was great to hear about current and forthcoming books by Val McDermid, Luca Veste, Chris Brookmyre, Stuart Neville and Mark Billingham. They even sang a song or two. Po dlhom čase som siahla po thrileri, či mysterióznom románe- bolo to najmä kvôli sľubovanému príbehu- násilie opakujúce sa generačne na tom istom mieste, v dome pod jasanmi. Mladý manželský pár sa nasťahuje do veľkého domu, ktorý im zariadil a prerába otec ženícha. Ich vzťah je jemne povedané nevyvážený, muž psychicky a postupne aj fyzicky týra svoju manželku. Jedného skorého rána ich vyruší stará žena dobíjajúca sa "do svojho domu", od tohto momentu mladá žena začína odhaľovať tajomstvo a minulosť domu, tej starej ženy, ale aj svokra, manžela, poťažmo aj seba (priznanie si, že je v násilnom vzťahu). Zaujala ma predstava domu hrôzy, kde sa po generácie predáva násilie z pokolenia na pokolenie, a prvá štvrtina knihy ma aj vskutku chytila a držala som palce trpiacim postavám, no po smrti jednej z nich to šlo z kopca, bolo to také rýchle, neuveriteľné, pozliepané, skrátka, dočítala som to, napriek tomu, že ma to už nezaujímalo, lebo mi bolo jasné, že to skončí čiastočným happy endom, ktorý by sa za žiadnych okolností podľa mňa neodohral. Nuž, mala som chuť si túto jeseň okoreniť nejakým dobrým thrilerom, čo sa nestalo a neviem, aká doba bude musieť uplynúť, aby som po ňom opäť siahla, možno mám problém s týmto žánrom ako celkom. Chápem, že na malý priestor a krátky časový úsek chceme vtesnať viaceré zápletky, no verím, že sa to dá urobiť aj uveriteľnejšie a v súlade so základnými psychologickými vzorcami. (Že dlhodobo týraná žena sa nechová ako akčný hrdina a pod.) Sara met her husband Damien Keane at a university’s but is a Northern Irish architect. She thought he was the perfect Man until he got married and his true nature personality came out. Sara was working in child protection sector. She igorned all the warning about him from his controlling behaviour to his manipulative behaviour which left her isolated from her friends and family. This unfortunately left her undergoing a mental health crisis. Damien and Sara move to a remote farmhouse which was secured for them by Damien's father, Francie. Sara has no job, no car and no-one she knows in the local community. Until one night they are visited by a distraught elderly woman, Mary Jackson, who claims that this farmhouse is her home. Mary was returned to her care home where she left but Sara mind is bubbling and curiosity of this welders lady. She visiting Mary, the farmhouse was indeed been her home before they moved in, but had been deliberately set on fire which why it was sold. The house of Ashes is a dual timeline and Sara main interest is about this house she research highs and heavy into this house they are living in. Many years ago, a set of events occurred, a history and mystery that seems to be embedded within the farmhouse. As a reader you learn about the connections of Mary Past her childhood, the ghosts and Sara connection with abusive husband. This is amazing compulsive read from start to finish. The whole eerie setting but definitely a great read also shows courage of both women
Was slightly confused as I started reading this book, thinking this elderly woman was running from a fire and seeking help in this house where Sara answered the door. Much time had passed between these events and Sara and her husband Damien now owned the old house that had once belonged to Mary. I really enjoyed it all, in present time with Sara and her extremely controlling volatile husband and his ex prisoner father Francie and when it went back to the past and Mary’s childhood and the horrors that went on in that house. Mary is only a young child during this time and so she escapes the most of it, born into it she knows no other world. Whereas her Mummy Joy and Mummy Noreen where taken their as young teenagers and forced into a cruel depraved life. Daddy Ivan, Daddy Tam and Daddy George are the ones keeping them there. So both parts had plenty of drama and shocking moments. I liked the way young Mary was written, in the way she spoke with true northern Irish sayings and slang, don’t think I’ve ever read a book set in NI that has been written like that. Being Northern Irish myself it’s the way we talk, but to others outside, it could be confusing. I had a soft spot for young Mary, you couldn’t not. I hoped she would one day get to see the sea and hear the ocean. Jeden dům, dvě časové linie a pět naprosto odpudivých misogynních tupců. Dům pod jasany prostřednictvím ženských hrdinek postupně odhaluje zkázu jedné “„rodiny“ v minulosti, zároveň v současnosti rozjíždí drama o majetnickém manželovi, co se chová jako naprostej idiot. Sídlo na venkově v Severním Irsku je sice fajn lokalita, pokud vám partner neprojíždí permanentně telefon, nezačne vám ho zabavovat a bez dovolení se nesmíte vzdálit z domov ani na nákup. Sarah to sice za zcela normální nepovažuje, ale vzbouřit se nedokáže. Pak jedné noci zabouchá na dveře zmatená zkrvavená stařena a hlavní hrdinka začne pátrat po krvavé historii domu. Postupné prozření, že manžílek Damien bude tak trochu majetnické hovádko přichází postupně, psychologický thriller graduje, v hlavních hrdinkách to bublá a vře a jen čekáte na krvavou lázeň, o níž tušíte od prvních stránek. Sice to trvá, jako v posledním Tarantinovi, ale Stuart Neville střídáním postav a časových linek oba příběhy skvěle propojuje a samozřejmě čtenáře slušně napíná. A ani chvíli nenudí, byť ty lehce mysteriózní momenty mohl vynechat. Impromptu and ill-planned trip to London! With not a thing to do I have found myself taking refuge in a nearby restaurant with a good book. I basicals chose this restaurant because it had lots of plants and marrs green floor tiles. #thehouseofashes is creepy and infuriatingly unputdownable. To be fair - this doesn't stray into the realm of incredible books - it's an easy read and a quick one too, however, sometimes that's what you need! Something naughty to devour. It follows multiple characters in different years who have at one point all inhabited the same home. 🔸RECENZE🔸🔹BOOKREVIEW🔹 Mrazivý a lehce mysteriózní thriller „Dům pod jasany“, který vydalo nakladatelství Argo v roce 2022, je dalším napínavým počinem několikanásobného laureáta ceny Edgar a držitele ceny The Los Angeles Times Books Prize za nejlepší krimi, amerického spisovatele Stuarta Nevilla, tvořícího také pod pseudonymem Haylen Beck. Tentokrát vypráví příběh dvou žen – labilní Sary a stařičké Mary. Nervově zhroucená Sára následuje svého dominantního manžela Damiena z Anglie do jeho rodného Severního Irska. Společně se nastěhují do starého domu na venkově, který je přímo prosáklý tragickými událostmi z minulosti. Sara se v domě cítí osamělá a izolovaná od okolního světa. Sem tam má možnost pohovořit s místními, avšak ti jsou většinou skoupí na slovo. Nicméně jsou to právě oni, od koho se dovídá šokující zprávy, které jí přidělají vrásky už tak na slabé duši. Má strach, obavy, avšak nemá se s nimi na nikoho blízkého obrátit. Manžel postupem času odkrývá svou pravou tvář – děsivou, zvrhlou, tyranskou a silně manipulativní. Sara se musí vzpamatovat.
