The thoughts we have can lead us down a path of acceptance or self sabotage. When we diet we focus on the action of overeating, calories, food, and we try to then control these things. Our mindset and the way we see the actions we just chose can send us in different directions. Our mindset and thoughts is where the power lies. As a therapist, I have worked closely with clients to shift their mindset and food relationships by first helping them shift their thoughts and their mindset first. Our thoughts and emotions control our behaviors. I get it - when you get those cravings it can make you feel like a drug addict. A lot of people I speak to don't know where to turn when they get urges to eat chocolate, so they do the obvious thing - give up chocolate and get it out of their sight. ... My 5 Health HACKS to improve the quality of your life👇 Not only will these help you get in shape, but if you want more energy and focus throughout your day, they will massively help… 1️⃣ SWITCH YOUR MINDSET You become what you think about, and if you’re telling yourself you “struggle to get in shape,” you’ve got to shift that or that is the story you are always going to tell yourself! Start implementing daily habits that support your health goals, such as walking and cleaning up your diet. These positive reinforcements support your goals and allow you to focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. 2️⃣ HYDRATE BETTER This is the first thing you need to do every morning after you wake. 500ml of water should be a daily non negotiable as soon as you wake up. When you’re asleep your body’s been without consuming water for over 6hours and if you don’t want headaches throughout the day, you need to drink more. 3️⃣ MORNING WORKOUTS Busy schedule? Train in the morning and avoid the evening overwhelm, you have to start your day as you mean to go on! 3️⃣ REPLACE PROCESS FOODS I’m a BIG believer in food quality. If you’re eating processed sh*t, you’re going to feel like sh*t. This is not to say you can’t eat foods that you enjoy, just be mindful of what foods you are eating, and plus, processed foods will leave you feeling less energised and more lethargic, which you don’t want! 5️⃣ SLEEP BETTER Getting enough sleep is essential (6.5-9 hours) if you want to function at a higher level. Poor sleep hygiene will cost you in the long run and it will effect your hunger, mood and decision-making throughout the day. You are not a robot. 🤖 You get ill. Work gets busy. The kids stress you out. Most of the time it's beyond your control. But you still blame yourself. You feel guilty for it. You beat yourself up. Then you end up giving up. But it's not the off day or week that makes you quit your diet. It's how you react to it. This is how my client here was able to continue to move forward. She was sick and bed-bound for a week. Disappointed and blaming herself. Fast forward a week, and that had all changed. Most of the “damage” is caused by your unwillingness to get back on track. Its rarely the 1 dinner out that causes the problem. It’s the mentality of “well, I screwed up Friday, let’s ride this one out to Monday and try again.” Or getting home from vacation and continuing to order fast food because your just “easing back into your schedule.” Stop slashing all your tires 😉 Have a plan for when you are taking time off and how you will return to your plan and reach your goals. Also think through what you will do if you have a weak moment and “mess up.” A simple strategy is to take a few minutes and review your goals, tell yourself why you are working toward that thing, and then make your next meal / drink in line with that goal. This will take practice reps to start to feel more natural. So the next time you “mess up,” use it as a practice rep. Tired of the never-ending cycle of being "on a diet" only to fall off the wagon and be "off a diet"? Quick fix diets are good for selling, but they're not helpful for long-term dietary success. Being "on a diet" often involves restrictive rules that are difficult to stick to, while then being "off a diet" may lead to overeating and unhealthy choices. The solution? Finding a sustainable diet that you can stick to all year round. Instead of depriving yourself of certain foods, focus on getting most of your intake from whole-foods you enjoy and you can actually handle a bit of junk here and there without being “off a diet”. Motivation is a finite resource - this is something we tell our clients upon the sign-up process. The truth is that no-one is truly motivated every minute of every day, not everyone has an undying love for the gym, nor do they have to. With that said, if you feel you are struggling to find your ‘motivation’, here are 4 go-to tips that will help you shift your mindset around working out and your diet. 1️⃣ Only focus on what is necessary for your goal. This can keep you locked into the diet cycle of diets that are hard to stick to for a number of reasons that are physical and psychological. A) Physical/physiological deprivation – this is where your body is registering the fact that it is not receiving enough calories to survive long-term. It sees this as a threat to your survival. It then ramps up your hunger hormone, ghrelin in an attempt to get you to eat more adequately. You’re also likely to experience increased brain space/thoughts being taken up by food in your brain’s attempt to get you to eat. B) Psychological deprivation – this comes from when we are told by diet rules that we can’t or shouldn’t eat certain types/amounts/groups of foods. As humans, when we are told we can’t do something, we naturally think about it more and feel tempted to do it. For example when someone says “don’t look down”.
