I dlaczego to „Dusza miecza”? 😂 Gdy kilka lat temu sięgnęłam po „Shadow of the Fox” Julii Kagawy, w życiu nie spodziewałam się tego, że a) doczekam się kiedyś polskiego wydania b) to wydanie rozpierniczy system i totalnie! A poza tym będzie świetnie oddawać klimat i fabułę tych książek :) O co w nich chodzi? Yumeko musi ochronić smoczy zwój, dostarczyć go do Świątyni Stalowego Pióra, ale że nie zna za bardzo świata, nie wie, jak się tam dostać, zawiązuje sojusz z legendarnym samurajem z Klanu Cienia, którego spotyka na swojej drodze, który de facto zostaje po ten zwój wysłany… I to tyle, nie zdradzę nic więcej hehe No może poza tym, że w „Cieniu Kitsune” tworzy nam się swego rodzaju drużyna do zadań specjalnych, która w „Duszy miecza”… O matko! To, co się tu dzieje… Powiem tak! Jeśli chodzi o fantastykę młodzieżową inspirowaną mitologią japońską, nie znam lepszego tytułu 💗 Mamy tu bardzo dużo yōkai i jest ich zdecydowanie więcej niż w „Tancerzach burzy” Kristoffa (ale ta książka mnie wymęczyła!). Do tego sporo akcji, ciekawie poprowadzone wątki miłosne, które nie przesłaniają fabuły, a stanowią bardziej jej dopełnienie oraz świetny humor! Julie Kagawa nie dość, że kreuje niesamowicie barwnych bohaterów, którzy z marszu wzbudzają ogromną sympatię (Okame - patrzę na Ciebie 😂), to na dodatek serwuje takie twisty fabularne, że szczęka opada do samej ziemi (końcówka „Duszy miecza” to totalny sztos!). Aż boję się sięgać po trzeci tom, boję się, że złamie mi serce 💔 Ale chyba nie mam wyjścia, bo nie mogę już dłużej czekać hehe Muszę dowiedzieć się, jak ta historia się zakończy! O książkach Kagawy mówiłam Wam już nie raz i na pewno będę do nich wracać. Kocham je całym serduchem, gorąco polecam i z niecierpliwością czekam na polską premierę trzeciego tomu! De karakters vertrouwen elkaar genoeg om samen op de queeste te gaan, maar niet genoeg om elkaar de waarheid te vertellen. Dit zorgt voor een interessante dynamiek tussen Yumeko en Tatsumi. Ze zijn ook tegenpolen – bijna een soort grumpy vs. sunshine. Toch konden hun karakters sterker opgebouwd worden: ondanks dat we vanuit hun perspectieven lezen, blijven de karakters wat op de oppervlakte. Het boek zit vol Japanse folklore en termen. ⛩️ De worldbuilding wordt stevig opgebouwd, met genoeg detail en uitleg zonder saai te worden. Schaduw van de vos is een roman vol actie en folklore. De karakteruitwerking kon sterker, maar het is een prettig eerste deel van de duologie met een hoop actie en een interessante worldbuilding. Yumeko and her little group of helpers travel further to complete their mission and encounter a wide range of creatures (some scary, some fun). Meanwhile, Tatsumi is trapped as Haikamono has taken over his body. While Yumeko has her own trials throughout her journey and has a mission to accomplish, she is determined to find a way to save Tatsumi. 🦊 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 We delve deeper into the Japanese lore as we're introduced to new creatures and new parts of the world. As in Shadow of the Fox, the worldbuilding is rich and immersive. I loved especially the creatures we encountered. Before reading this (it's a reread), I had never come across most of them in literature. 🦊 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 As I mentioned above, the characters are more fleshed out. Yumeko isn't a naive, clueless girl anymore. She's slowly but surely turned into a strong-willed, courageous kitsune who will stop at nothing to save the ones she loves. My favorite is still Okame, though. I love his wit and of course his banter with everyone, especially Daisuke. Their relationship evolves into something more, and I'm all here for it! 🦊 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 The first time around I gave this book 3.5 stars, but I've upped it to 4 now because I have so much love for this trilogy and its characters. It's one of the most fun YA fantasies I've read. And I'm really looking forward to rereading the last book now, despite already knowing how it's going to end. A cselekmény több szálon és nézőpontból játszódik, ami a könyv elején nagyon zavaró volt, mivel a fejezeteknek csak címei vannak, és nem tudjuk, meg hogy kinek a szemszögéből olvassuk a könyvet. A történet szerintem elég lassan halad, és olyan tipikus anime feelingem volt. Tetszett, ahogy a Japán mitológiával megismertet minket az írónő. Volt egy szó jegyzet a könyv végén és mindent szépen megmagyarázott a sorok között is, viszont néha úgy éreztem, hogy ettől lassul be a könyv. Romantikus szál csak nagyon gyengén van jelen, nem az a fő érdekeltség, de nagyon kedves és szívmelengető lesz ettől a story. A végkifejlett igazán erős és zsúfolt volt a könyv többi részéhez képest. Have you finished any books you’ve had for years recently? . I just finished this one this morning and I LOVED it. More than I expected. Stories around quests aren’t always my jam, but the characters were great and so many monster/ghost fights. Okame, the jaded, sarcastic ronin is my favorite character. I do love the the others as well. Tatsumi and his struggle to not feel things about the young Yumeko (who’s secretly half kitsune) was such a well crafted, slow tension through the book. He has very good reasons not to feel anything. Like carrying a sword that imprisons a demon. He goes from trusting no one to trusting her. The ending tho. 😱 Like I jumped right into the audiobook for Soul of the Sword because I can’t wait for the actual book to arrive. . Here’s the tagline for more details: . "Night of the Dragon" A while ago, maybe 3 or 4 years ago, I read Julie Kagawa's Shadow of the Fox trilogy and loved it so much that I still remember most of it even after all this time. I always wanted to illustrate something related but at the time I was not confident enough about my painting skills to paint, let's say, a dragon. But now I am a bit more confident. Then I had an idea. What if I was the artist who was asked to illustrate the cover for one of the books? What would I do? Which one would I choose? So I chose book 3 to illustrate. Did I reread the books before doing this? No. Should I have done that? Perhaps, because I looked for the description of the dragon in the book, like yerterday, and I realized that I totally failed at the color choice. So this isn't a possible cover but rather an illustration inspired by the books. Let's say I just went with the flow. Many hunt for this scroll - as it grants you one single wish - so she needs protection on the road. Enter Tatsumi, a samurai, who seeks the scroll for his clan. Yumeko misleads him, promising him to bring him to the scroll, if he becomes her traveling companion to keep her safe. Adventure ensues. 🦊 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 For a YA fantasy novel, I found this to have plenty of worldbuilding, which is one of the reasons why I love this trilogy so much. There's a lot of interesting Japanese lore that I haven't come across that often (maybe I'm just picking up the wrong books!). The storytelling is beautiful and magical; I love spending time in this world. 🦊 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 The main characters are all endearing in their own way. They are distinguished from one another and, although, there are many clichés attached to them, I can't help but adore them. Yumeko is a naive young girl, but she's got spirit and she has some tricks up her sleeve! She's half kitsune, half human - a part of herself she has to hide from the rest of the world. Tatsumi is the typical broody, lonely boy that has to protect our female MC. I love broody male characters, though, so I'm not complaining. Of course he's gotta be Yumeko's love interest, but I'm here for it! Okame is probably my favorite character: a ronin without a master. He develops a friendship with Yumeko as he tags along on the journey. He's there for comic relief and I kinda love his voice when you listen to the audiobooks (it takes some adjusting, though, because it sounds so funny.) 🦊 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 This was a reread and is still one of my favorite YA fantasies today. „Cień Kitsune” Julie Kagawa 🦊🧡🪭🗡️⛩️🗺️🍜🐉 Cześć, dzisiaj mam dla was recenzję „Cienia Kitsune” i tak jak mówiłam tym razem ocena będzie trochę inna, ponieważ ostatnie 200 stron przeleciałam tylko wzrokiem. Jak myślę o tej książce to trochę ciężko mi ją ocenić również ze względu na to, że to była zdecydowanie nie moja bajka. Początek zapowiadał się naprawdę ciekawy, a potem podróż Yumeko i Tatsumiego stała się dla mnie bardzo nudna. Myślałam, że się zachwycę pod kątem fabuły, ale ona mnie najzwyklej nie obchodziła. Jest motyw enemies to lovers, z tym, że ci wrogowie „nie zdążyli” stać się kochankami. Zakładałam, że będzie motyw zdrady (wiele na to wskazywało), ale akcja potoczyła się inaczej. Końcówka mnie niestety w ogóle nie powaliła, ani nie zachęciła do czytania dalszych części trylogii. Wydawało mi się, że główną częścią historii będzie element z Kitsune, a tak naprawdę Yumeko nie użyła swojej mocy ani razu, tylko parę razy o niej wspomniała. Miałam, też nadzieję, zobaczyć jak Tatsumi się dowiaduje o jej sekrecie, ale to się w tej części nie stało. Za to, pięknym atutem książki jest opis kultury i folkloru japońskiego, jedzenia, miejsc, mitów i legend japońskich jak i zasad samurajów. To pod tym względem byłam zachwycona, naprawdę wszytko jest przedstawione bardzo dokładnie, rzetelnie i magicznie. Jeśli ktoś się fascynuje kulturą/językiem japońskim to zdecydowanie książka dla niego, ja natomiast, aż takiego przywiązania chyba nie wykazuję😅. Książka jest dobra, tylko po prostu nie dla mnie, więc i tak zachęcam. My 2023 reads! I loved a bunch of these books! My first time reading Pride and Prejudice; it was great! And I enjoyed Wuthering Heights. I want to read more Brontë books! Gentle and Lowly was a great reminder of God’s character and His heart toward us. The Summer I Turned Pretty was a page turner. Redwall and Shadow of the Fox were an adventure. The College Girl’s Survival Guide was full of good advice for Christian girls heading to or currently in college. I read Tim Keller’s book The Prodigal God in one of my classes, but it was good and made me think about the biblical story of the Prodigal Son from a different perspective and dig deeper. Even though I didn’t read a ton of books this year, they were all good. In 2024, I have set my reading goal at 15 books. Time will tell how many books I actually read. Well, 2023 was definitely something. I basically stopped reading in July and only started reqding again when I had some downtime after Christmas (for the first time since June). I was gifted a set of special editions of the Shadow of the Fox series by Julie Kagawa for Christmas and the books were so beautiful and sounded intriguing, and even though I had three other stories still to finish, I started reading and got lost for hours in the world of the book. For the first time in months, reading didn't feel like a chore anymore. But because of this, I read not even 20 books this year, with 4 books I'm technically still currently reading. I almost managed to finish Shadow of the Fox, but there are still 30 pages left I couldn't finish before I had to leave for my friend's party. But I definitely learned a lot of things about my reading habits this year and hope to always remind myself not to lose the fun while reading next year. But more on that when in my New Year's resolution post in a few days. Highlights for me were definitely The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System and Shadow of the Fox. I read a lot of great books this year and especially Scum-Villain had it's flaws, but these books managed to make me feel truly entertained. Last but not least, I'd like to thank all of you. • Book 33/50 As like the last one I’m so behind on reviews…but this is a read from May! We’re on the 27th December 😬 I’ve got not very long to catch up on reviews and start the year fresh with the intention to actually use my personal insta… I read Shadow of the Fox in April and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I immediately hunted down the rest of the series. Soul of the Sword was much the same as the first book. Beautiful writing, great world building and even better character development. On top of that the stakes increased further, the plot certainly thickened and there was even more development with the characters. Another adventure unlocked 🔓 Just recently finished this lovely book last week sometime, and I really enjoyed it! I wanted to go to Japan in a literary sense, lol. This book is about a fox girl named Yumeko who is given the task to protect and deliver a piece of magical scroll known as the Dragon's Prayer to the monks from Steel Feather Temple. Every 1000 years, the dragon will appear and grant someone who has all the pieces of the scroll a wish. She runs into a Shinobi named Tatsumi Kage, a member of the Shadow Clan who is tasked with finding the pieces of the scroll. They agree to journey together to find the temple and a piece of the scroll. Overall, it was really nice to read, and I'm looking forward to the next book. The ending and the little excerpt of the next book make me curious about the events before "Shadow of the Fox" and what's going to happen next!!

I've got another review for you, accompanied by my awful face. Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa As always, the full review is on my Goodreads. Now, when I picked this up I thought it was a standalone book - I was wrong. I also didn't realise it was YA - I paid the price. What drew me in was the premise of a feudal Japan-inspired fantasy world, and that was certainly the highlight of the book. There are kami, yokai, and samurai, and the author clearly understands the culture she is writing about. Plot-wise, there is a strong premise, but it meanders a bit. Threats are introduced regularly that ultimately ruin any tension by being too frequent. There is a good juxtaposition between the two POV characters - one naïve, the other too guarded - but the dynamic (for me) is soured by moments of "I have feelings for this person I don't understand" on pretty much every page. It got to a point of eye-rolling. It had a strong ending that set up things to come. It left me with questions, and I do somewhat want to know how it ends...but I'm not sure I can sit through more YA tropes, especially the clunky romance elements. And, minor spoilers perhaps, but it feels like a love triangle element is set up towards the end, which I'm not interested in, honestly. Loved the setting, was intrigued by the story, but I think YA isn't for me and those tropes took me out of truly enjoying it. One of the best fantasy series I have ever read! It had an epic, adventurous character and the MC is super likable. The romance is great and believable and while it is very important to the story it still leaves enough space for friendships and saving the world 🦊

Widziałam dużo narzekania na tę historię. Rzeczywiście nie jest dla każdego. To typowa powieść drogi, a one cechują się powtarzalnością. Bohaterowie podróżują z punktu A do punktu B i przeżywają przygody. Moim pierwszym skojarzeniem było anime „Kimetsu no Yaiba”. Widzę pewne powtarzalne motywy, które wykorzystują mangi i anime, więc nastawiłam się na mangę napisaną prozą. I dokładnie to dostałam. Tajemniczy, bucowaty samuraj, trochę głupiutka lisiczka (której łatwo głupotki wybaczyć) i „ten śmieszny”, który dołącza się do nich po drodze. A to wszystko w świecie wypełnionym mitologią japońską, którą uwielbiam. Nie znam podobnej historii, więc cieszę się, że wreszcie coś takiego pojawiło się na rynku. It is a YA Fantasy, but felt like an adult and much more. The opening of the story is gripping and enough to hook you to the story. The story is set in Japan of course, at the time where there were different clans used to reside, demons are dwelling though in darkness and out of normal people's eyes, half demon half humans roam the world. The main characters of the book -Yumeko - kitsune, a fox girl & Kage Tatsumi - the demonslayer, bearer of Kamigoroshi, both are assigned to a similar task. Former one with protect a scroll and take it to a powerful temple for its further protection from the hands of greedy demons to mortal. While the later one to take it to his own clan and kill everyone that comes to his goal. But some bad things happen and they make a deal to help each other, while both keeping their secrets. But as they go into this adventurous quest to find the temple they meet other interesting minor characters Taiyo Daisuke - Oni no Mikoto. Okame - a ronin, disgraceful samurai , Reika - the shrine maiden, and all are amazing. The book has slight romance but unlikely friendships, a lot of cultural references, actions, sweet, fun moments and characters development. A full package if you love YA Fantasy, and especially like to read Asian folklore, asian representations. I love everything about this book and would like to recommend it to everyone. Tropes - . Lubicie anime? Które są wasze ulubione? 🦊 "CIEŃ KITSUNE" JULIE KAGAWA Książka wręcz idealna dla fanów anime. Czytając ją, co chwilę się uśmiechałam i z wielką przyjemnością odgadywałam, co dalej się wydarzy. Każdy amator japońskich animacji rozpozna tutaj klasyczne motywy, elementy oraz znajome kreacje bohaterów. Dla mnie to była ogromna radocha. Powieść toczy się dwutorowo i w większości realizuje motyw drogi. Yumeko, pół-kitsune, oraz Tatsumi, shinobi klanu Cienia, zmierzają razem do celu, choć z innych pobudek. Podczas wędrówki dołączają do nich nowi kompani, muszą także pokonywać wiele przeszkód, a przy okazji taić przed sobą własne sekrety. Nie brakuje tu brutalności i lekkiej groteski, która jest charakterystyczna dla tego rodzaju twórczości. Tak samo jak fenomenalny motyw demona zaklętego w mieczu czy psotny i prostolinijny charakter kitsune. Powieść od początku do końca jest utrzymana w konwencji anime, więc jeśli ktoś nie czuje tego klimatu, to może się odbić od tego tytułu. Ja natomiast nie mogę się doczekać kontynuacji, bo czuję się tutaj, jak ryba w wodzie. Uwielbiam przeżywać z postaciami misje, eksplorować nowe lokalizacje oraz obserwować zatracenie, bądź odnajdywanie w sobie nieznanych dotąd emocji. Tego tutaj nie brakuje i trzyma mocno przy tekście. A ten z kolei czyta się szybko i przyjemnie. Czuć serce włożone przez autorkę w tworzenie tej historii. Polecam! Yumeko to pół-kitsune, czyli magiczna istota, będąca częściowo lisem, częściowo człowiekiem. Jest młoda, zdolna i psotna. Wychowuje się i szkoli pod czujnym okiem mnichów ze Świątyni Milczącego Wiatru. Gdy świątynia zostaje zaatakowana przez demony, mnisi zlecają jej bardzo ważne zadanie. Ma przenieść potężny zwój w bezpieczne miejsce. Na początku ucieczki Yumeko napotyka samuraja, Kage Tatsumiego, którego namawia do pomocy. Jest to ryzykowny pomysł, ponieważ chłopak wypełnia własną misję i poszukuje dokładnie tego magicznego przedmiotu, który ukrywa dziewczyna. Czy wojownik dowie się, że został zmanipulowany przez kitsune? Historia przebiega według pewnego schematu. Przypomina grę komputerową, w której bohaterowie, wykonując główną misję, napotykają na swej drodze rozmaitych przeciwników i sojuszników, co popycha ich ku ciekawym misjom pobocznym. Dzięki takiej strukturze dowiadujemy się dużo o niezwykłym świecie, poznajemy nowe postacie i miejsca. Książkę wypełniają po brzegi stworzenia z mitologii japońskiej. Ich nazwy oczywiście występują w oryginalnym języku, tak samo, jak niektóre wyrażenia. Dla mnie nie stanowiło to problemu, bo od dawna interesuję się Japonią i jakąś wiedzę językową i kulturową już posiadam, ale ostrzegam, że dla niektórych czytelników, ciągłe zerkanie do słownika na końcu książki może być frustrujące. Przedstawiany świat jest niesamowicie interesujący, lecz jeśli chodzi o bohaterów, to niestety mam mieszane uczucia. Yumeko denerwowała mnie swoją naiwnością, a Tatsumi wydawał mi się czasem trochę nijaki. Natomiast pozytywnym zaskoczeniem okazał się zabawny Okame. Chciałabym poznać ich wszystkich lepiej, bo na razie nie przywiązałam się do nich zbyt mocno. Jestem też ciekawa rozwoju wątku miłosnego, bo w tej części dosłownie raczkował, ale tego akurat nie uważam za wadę.
