💜What’s a popular book that just didn’t work for you? This was a case of the hype got to me and I loved the cover so why not. It had a strong start, and a unique story telling. Unique because they really don’t try to redeem some of the characters & bad things really did happen. Almost to an uncomfortable point. In the end though I don’t think I’ll be continuing on because I kinda lost interest in the characters by the end. I’m glad I finished it but I’m not that invested in the characters so it just doesn’t seem worth it even for the plot. Because at the end of the day there was like 1 singular plot point for the entire book. I think this book lacked more dimension. It needed like an almost secret society standpoint or idk just more depth. The plot was too simple and they didn’t really involve anything deeper than current problem. I can tell the next book will be the same issue. I think this can really be someone’s jam tho and I enjoyed the writing style and imagery! I just wanted a bit more from this story. After a mishap at her last school, Miyoung and her mother Yena move to Seoul again so she can start afresh. Miyoung is half-gumiho, and has always kept her distance from people around her, in part because of Yena’s distrust towards and hatred of humans and in part because Miyoung herself doesn’t think she could ever open up enough to someone to form a friendship. But during one of her “hunts”, Miyoung gets into a fight with a Dokkaebi and a high school boy called Jihoon ends up helping her—he finds out her secret, and she finds out that he’s one of her new classmates. • This book has honestly been on my TBR for years now and I finally picked up the audiobook because I wanted something relatively light to listen to. It took me a while to get into the story because, considering the story mostly takes place in Seoul and the characters are presumably monolingual, it felt a bit weird for all the Korean to be mixed in with the English, exclamations like “ya” or “saekkiya”, or how characters use the Korean word for teacher when addressing their teacher. And then I remind myself that certain Japanese translated books have done the same—but the difference was that Wicked Fox’s original language had always been English. That’s a debate I, a non-Korean, probably can’t bring up. I think my knee-jerk cringe was more attributable to my exposure to koreaboos in my teenage years and the way they peppered their normal speech with Korean words or expressions, but once I got over the bilingual cringe, I found myself enjoying the story itself. I love how Miyoung and Jihoon—two closed-off and generally isolated teens—are written, and how they help each other open up to people around them. I’ve seen people compare this to a kdrama, and while I don’t watch kdramas very much (my last one being Itaewon Class the year it came out), I could certainly picture it that way. I also liked learning more about some of the more famous Korean mythological creatures, and how these myths play into a modern high school setting.

✨️“Not all predators are monsters. But if you beat them enough, they’ll bite.” ― Kat Cho, Wicked Fox✨️ This book was absolutely lovely - one of my favorite reads of the year! It literally felt like reading a kdrama put to paper. It had all the iconic tropes - the umbrella scene, she saves him, drunk confession, back hug moment, piggy-back ride scene, chaotic found family/friend group - without feeling like it was checking off a list of musts. The flow and plot were amazing, as was the writing style. The characters were complex, and the questions this book presented really make you think. It stays with you after you close the last page. What’s the difference between a human and a monster? When is that line crossed? And once crossed, is redemption possible? If possible, how? This book featured Gumihos, my favorite mythical creature of all time thanks to Tale of the Nine Tailed. The vibes in this book really reminded me of that show, with elements of True Beauty in there too. I’m looking forward to book two, Vicious Spirits. After reading the blurb I’m happy to find that I absolutely CALLED IT with Junu becoming the “second male lead” with all that comes with it. To be clear, Miyoung 100% belongs with Jihoon, but does it really have kdrama vibes without an unrequited loving, self-sacrificing second male lead? I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet love story (that isn’t spicy) with action and high stakes, great characterization, and Gumihos. Not only kdrama fans will love this book - but it might just pull you into the genre! Soooo… I took a really long break LoL. The last book I DNF’d and lost my steam. This book was a recommendation on a Korean author so I went to the library and picked it up. If you like KDramas you’ll like this story about a Gumiho and a human who befriends her. It is VERY KDrama. Because I watch a lot of KDramas I was able to predict every turn and scene in this book. That took away some of the magic of reading it. ✨️November Reading Wrap-up✨️ The Art of Destiny ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ -Slow start, but even that was rollicking fun, and then the midpoint plot twist happens. From there on out, your mind gets blown approximately twice per chapter. This was just as good if not better than The Art of Prophecy. I can’t wait for book three!! Chaos and Curses ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ -I haven’t read all the short stories that compile this lovely book yet, but the ones I have are amazing, particularly The one by wonderful and talented Amber Mars. Immortal Longings ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ -This book’s atmosphere is incredible. Every character was complex and interesting. The romance was a bit too spicy for my taste, but I’m still very invested in Calla and Anton’s romance. I’m looking forward to the next installment! Sorcery of Thorns ⭐️⭐️⭐️ -I wish I had read this book a few years ago. It was still good with well developed characters and complex plot, but it felt gauged for a younger audience. Fall Book Recommendations 🍂 I wanted to highlight some books I read years ago but remember enjoying and still think about. The books are Wicked Fox and Vicious Spirits by Kat Cho. These books are a young adult urban fantasy that takes place in Seoul. The story is based on Korean Mythology following Miyoung, a gumiho. In Korean folklore, a gumiho is a nine-tailed fox who must devour the energy of men to survive. Miyoung moves back to Seoul with her mother, who is also a gumiho. They both only devour the energy of evil men, and in a city where people have forgotten the folklore, who will suspect anything? Miyoung’s goal once in Seoul is to stay under the radar and not be noticed. Yet, she captures the attention of Jihoon and ends up saving his life one night. I remember enjoying the romance, the mythology, and the suspense in both books. One of my favorite characters is Yena, Jihoon’s grandma. I loved the grandma/grandson relationship we got to witness. I still think about this duology and would recommend reading it any time of the year, but especially now that we are in the fall. Ok, if you've read my previous post, you know why I've read only five hahaha. But that's ok. All 5 are good reads. Yes, including the YA fantasy, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝘅 (4⭐️). This one focuses more on the mother-daughter relationship theme rather than romance so yeah, that one's auntie-approved 😎👍 𝗣𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶 (5⭐️), meanwhile, is a lesson in solitude. It was a challenge for my attention (or also yours IF you're the kind of reader who likes to remember details) but... all that cave-building from the start will make sense in the end. Some of my book buddies cried while reading 𝗚𝗶𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶'𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺 (5⭐️). I didn't. I was incensed! David's a sadboi cancer cell who infects everyone with misfortune. I fart at your general direction, David! Hmp. I have a love and hate relationship with 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 (4⭐️). As I've said to one of my booksta friend, reading HoD is like eating a super dense brownie - the gooey goodness makes you happy but eating too much of it in one go will make you sick. Best to appreciate it slowly. 😎👍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝗿 (5⭐️) is my favorite this month. This trilogy will be my new Mistborn, and Rin - my new Vin. You have to read to know. And I guess I should continue on The Dragon Republic to combat the reading slump I feel coming. It's also given me amazing opportunities to explore more about my culture that I didn't even know and/or experience first-hand myself. For example, this year I'm back in Seoul for Chuseok. When I was younger, growing up in the US, we didn't celebrate Chuseok. But I love being in Korea now to see all the festivities and ways that we celebrate our culture and where we came from! Also, the food is delicious! 🍂🇰🇷This is the mid-autumn festival in Korea when most go back to their hometown to pay respect to their families and to eat delicious food together! Chuseok, also known as Hangawi (한가위), is one of Korea’s most important holidays and a time to celebrate our culture and history as well with lots of festivals and free entry to museums and palaces throughout the city! If you want to know what to eat today, then traditional foods are songpyeon, japchae, kalbi jjim, and jeon!🥘🍖 FUN FACT: a popular thing to give on Chuseok is a Spam Gift Set! HISTORY OF CHUSEOK: According to legend, about 2000 years ago, a Silla king created a month-long weaving contest. The team who wove the most cloth would win and be treated by the losing team with food, drinks, and gifts. Thus beginning the tradition that would become Chuseok today!
