LIVING WITH A DISABILITY involves a constant sense of vulnerability. If a parent of an autistic child shares the challenging aspects of their child’s disability, it feels like drowning in self-pity to people who don't have experience with it. People are more benevolent when individuals with disabilities achieve great success and overcome challenges, portraying them as inspiring figures who defied the odds. While stories of triumph are powerful, they often overlook the daily struggles of those with disabilities without the same level of visible success. It is essential to shift the narrative and acknowledge and celebrate the resilience, courage, and strength of individuals who face ongoing challenges and obstacles in their journey with disabilities and understand that external achievements or societal standards do not define the worth of a person's life. We should recognize that their worthiness and value are not defined by their ability to overcome their disabilities but by their unwavering determination and perseverance in the face of adversity. Tony DeBlois was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. At birth, he weighed less than 2 pounds, became blind within days, and was later diagnosed as autistic. However, ignoring conventional information, his mother's (Janice DeBlois) love uncovered his musical genius. 🎼🎹 "I feel special when I play this kind of music. I sort of blossom," he said. His mother was the first to notice his musical ability when she bought him a toy piano at the age of two. "The more music we've given him, the more language we've gotten out of him. I used to teach him vocabulary by singing songs to him," said Tony's mother. "Yet, he never really spoke conversationally until he went to the Berklee College of Music and graduated with honours, much to the amazement of all the so-called "experts." It is evident that it has been his mother's love that not only saved Tony from death - when doctors suggested shortly after birth that she let her son die - but also her unwavering determination to help him find his destiny. Janice DeBlois's book 'Some Kind of Genius' is dedicated, in part, to local musicians Bo and Bill Winiker, who happened to meet DeBlois at Skipjacks during one of their Sunday brunch performances. "I feel like I'm in the company of a genius," Bo Winiker said. "When I first met Tony, he wasn't able to communicate with me through the spoken word, but we were able to communicate with music. Working with Tony has been the highlight of our career." Whether it was the devotion and tutelage of musicians like the Winikers or the other mentors along the way who believed in giving Tony a chance, his biggest dreamer has been and continues to be his mother. "There's nothing that he doesn't think he can do. Little recap of last weekend as we celebrated the birthday of our King Willem Alexander van Oranje. Even though we have been living in Miami over 7 years our heart is still orange and we love to share our Dutch traditions with our children. We couldn’t be more happy when the Dutch school decided to pick up our idea of organizing a kids flea-market (Vrijmarkt). As you probably know by now, I love to be creative with the kids and so together with dad we made a Polaroid frame. This way we could make memorable Polaroid pictures of everyone. We also made homemade cookies in our favorite royal color orange and cleaned up toys and books to sell and make other kids happy for a good Dutch price. It was a beautiful morning including traditional “Oud Hollandse Spelletjes” and stroopwafels. Repost! In this study, they wanted to estimate the risk of substance use-related problems in two study population: probands with ASD and their relatives. Setup 🪄 26,986 autistics born in Sweden between 1973-2009 + their 96,557 non-ASD relatives + 1,349,300 non-ASD individuals. Recently discovered this podcast - such a gem if you or your child are neurodivergent. Great resources to print and share to encourage the ND in your life to start making nutritional improvements! My neurodivergent college teen has been stubbornly resistant to making many improvements to her diet but is finally willing to make some changes over the summer. I’ll definitely be showing her these studies to help her decide which nutritional intervention to try first. I’ve been gluten-free, dairy-free flexitarian for over a decade now to help my autoimmune symptoms - excited to help coach her through this. Since February, The Playhouse Foundation, in collaboration with the University of Southampton, have been hosting a student internship with a final year Psychology student, Elena. Over the course of her internship, Elena will be able to assist with the delivery of an ABA programme to a four year old girl with autism. Elena describes how, ‘joining The Playhouse Foundation team has definitely helped open a new door for me into the field of early intervention work and the teaching techniques behind it. The team have been very supportive in every aspect of the journey; always answering my questions and explaining all the fundamental key aspects of the ABA programme. I have gained a real sense of working with children of special needs; such as understanding ways to work around avoidant behaviours while also using positive reinforcements to create an exciting and engaging environment. Sessions have helped me gain knowledge on tasks which have a real important impact for a child such as: object imitation, songs of action, desensitisation activities and relinquishing reinforcers.
