Book review 📚 ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75/5 Monstrous Souls by Rebecca Kelly I finally got around to reading this book and it was decent! The story is quite dark with some serious trigger warnings in it. I thought the story was written and executed well. The end was quick which I liked, no “x amount of time later..”, it was wrapped up with a closed and sudden ending. The only real negative I found with this book was that it didn’t feel very original, it felt like it’s do ably a story very similar to others. The plot.. What if you knew the truth but couldn’t remember? Over a decade ago, Heidi was the victim of a brutal attack that left her hospitalised, her younger sister missing, and her best friend dead. But Heidi doesn’t remember any of that. She’s lived her life since then with little memory of her friends and family and no recollection of the crime. But lately, it’s all starting to come back. As Heidi begins retracing the events that lead to the assault, she is forced to confront the pain and guilt she’s long kept buried. But Heidi isn’t the only one digging up the past, and the closer she gets to remembering the truth, the more danger she’s in. When the truth is worse than fiction, is the past worth reliving? An addictive thriller about a case gone cold and the dangers lurking on our doorsteps, Monstrous Souls will have you gripped to the very end. #book #bookreview #booklover #bookstagram #bookaddict #booksuk #bookcommunity #bookphotography #bookrecommendations #bookgram #books #bookflatlay #booknerd #bookobsessed #booklife #bookworms #bookreviewer

‘What if the spring really did retreat? What if the leaves and blossoms all of a sudden failed to appear one year? If it all stopped working and the system broke down?’ . Over 700 pages, I’m exhausted, but in the best kind of way. Can you really say you found a new favourite author after reading just one book? I feel like you can because man, I’m ready to get into the six volumes of his autobiographical series like there’s no tomorrow. . The plot is a rollercoaster of feelings and happenings. Syvert is a young man who’s unsure about his own ambitions and future. Barely back from his military service, he finds himself stuck at home with his brother when his mother needs to get medical help. In the middle of his confusing feelings towards his deceased father, Syvert finds a few letters in Russian that change his life. Now, the story turns to Alevtina and after 400-500 pages we’re finally in the middle of it all. Who is Alevtina and her connection to Syvert, I’ll let you find out later. . The style of writing made me feel like I was not only part of the story, but part of the characters’ consciousness. Part of Syvert, part of Alevtina. Going from one extreme to the other, but somehow it feels very natural? The first 400-500 pages describe such mundane happenings that you’re not sure what to think of it, but then you get to Alevtina’s part and it’s full of facts and science and you want to Google everything and learn about it. . Also, found out online that the title comes from a poem by the Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva - “However much you feed a wolf, it always looks to the forest. We are all wolves of the dense forest of Eternity.” 🤯 . Have you read Knausgaard? Tell me about it! Thank you @vintagebooks for the copy!

Welcome to my new bookstagram page! I'm Julie, nearly 33, and I live in the UK. I've always been a huge lover of books, even before I could read and then became a voracious reader. I can't imagine a world without books. I wanted to create a page to track my reading habits but also just to capture the art and beauty of books and writing and conenct with people with the same interests. Funnily enough, I'm not a fan of social media so I will treat this as mainly for myself a bit as a scrapbook. Thank you for being here and let me know who you are in the comments ☺️ #books #bookstagram #bookworms #booknerds #booksuk #bookstagrammer #allaboutbooks #reading #readers #booklovers #bookaddict #bookaddiction

‘Just because a pawn is better treated doesn’t make it safer on the board.’ 📚 Readathon Reads 📚 Hope everyone had a great bank holiday weekend 😎 I’m participating in this months @fantasy_fellowship #readathon and have managed to read two books so far this month! I finally got around to reading The Stolen Heir duology 🗡️ and really enjoyed getting back into the world of Elfhame 🧚 ‘Hating requires going on, even when you can no longer believe in any better future.’ I have to say Holly Black is excellent at building the faerie realms 🤩 her imagination for these characters is so unique and I love that her stories harken back to the tales of old with the cruelty of the fae 😈 ‘Fear is not love, but it can appear much the same.’ I looked forward to this series after loving the cruel prince but I have to say I’m a little disappointed 😢 I feel the story lacked depth and connection to the characters and almost depended on you being attached to them from the previous trilogy too much ❌ The main characters here were only children and in very few scenes during the original battle for the crown 👑 Nonetheless it was still enjoyable and a good couple of quick reads to kick off the readathon month ✅ ‘Sometimes life gives us the terrible gift of our own wishes come true.’ Are you participating in the readathon? 🌱 The Maiden - Kate Foster 🍃 So this year I’ve been trying to be a bit more conscious of what I’m buying/reading. When the @womensprize long list was announced, I promised myself that I would only read the books that really appealed to me, and The Maiden was at the top of that list. It had totally passed me by, and I’m so glad that the long list put it on my radar! Set in Edinburgh in the 1600’s, The Maiden is based on the true story of Lady Christian Nimmo, who was accused of murdering her uncle/lover (not blood relatives, if that makes it any better? Probably not). The story is told through the perspectives of Christian and Violet, who worked at a ‘pleasure house’ before being rented by Christian’s uncle. It explores the motivation behind the murder. How Lady Christian had likely been groomed by her much older uncle, how Violet was left to fend for herself after her parents death, and how men used religion as a tool of suppression. There is a strong undertone of feminist rage, and it demonstrates how women, regardless of their background, were always treated as inferior. It also explored the tabloid press, and how there has always been a public appetite for salacious news stories and scandal. It’s stunningly atmospheric, and it did make me want to swoosh around Scotland in a cape. It’s also thoughtful and engaging, and a really interesting read. Have you read The Maiden? Let me know what you thought of it! And what are you reading on this lovely (for now) bank holiday weekend?

Doing Time by Jodie Taylor 💙 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This has been my soundtrack travelling to and from work recently and I’ve really enjoyed it. I haven’t read any of the other books so wasn’t sure if I’d get a bit lost but it was super easy to follow, fun and overall an enjoyable read. Book review 📚 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 The Breakdown by B.A. Paris This one started off being a bit plain and simple and I didn’t think I was going to think much of it. It seemed a stereotypical unreliable MC that couldn’t shared their problems and they wouldn’t have been problems. What I thought was the twist was revealed and I had guessed it early on so while I thought it was clever, I wasn’t shocked in any way. THEN it got a whole lot better. Everything you thought you knew was put to question. It made what had seemed a flat thriller story much more exciting and if you read it back you’d be kicking yourself for missing it. The plot.. Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods, on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, with the woman sitting inside-the woman who was killed. She’s been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It’s a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm. Her husband would be furious if he knew she’d broken her promise not to take that shortcut home. And she probably would only have been hurt herself if she’d stopped. But since then, she’s been forgetting every little thing: where she left the car, if she took her pills, the alarm code, why she ordered a pram when she doesn’t have a baby. The only thing she can’t forget is that woman, the woman she might have saved, and the terrible nagging guilt. Or the silent calls she’s receiving, or the feeling that someone’s watching her.. #book #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #bookstagram #booklover #booknerd #bookaddict #booksuk #bookcommunity #bookphotography #bookish #bookreview #bookrecommendation #bookshelf #bookstack

The Silent Patient | Alex Michaelides Genre: Thriller Stars: 3.5⭐️ Review: I tried to read this years ago and found it insufferable so left it, but after some persuasion from some work friends I decided to give it another go. It wasn’t as bad as I originally thought but it is just a mystery with a hint of thrill. The ending started to remind me a bit of the Netflix show YOU. It caught me a bit by surprise which I liked. I did however, hate the saviour complex that made its way throughout the book… ‘only I can help her, only I can get her to speak’ like please she’s choosing not to. This saviour complex was explained at the end and obviously the reasons behind why he felt this way. The very end could have been better but I guess overall it was a decent read. I’m not wowed by it and definitely don’t agree with the hype this book has! #newbook #bookstagram #newbooktoread #books #bookstagram #reading #readmorebooks #booksuk #bookreview #readingreview #bookrecommendations #bookclub

‘One does not need the size of a dragon to have the soul of a dragon.’- Ship of Destiny 📚 April Wrap Up 📚 April was a funny month, where I continued to have to do a lot of travelling for work 🚂 I’m so tired and can’t believe where the month has gone but I’m glad almost all of the things on my busy schedule for the year so far are over 😴 and I’m winding down ready to enjoy the summer ☀️ I feel like I haven’t read much this month but I have to remind myself just how big Ship of Destiny is 🐉 and with how busy I have been, that it’s ok to have a slow reading month sometimes 🗓️ I thoroughly enjoyed getting back to Hobb and I’m glad I picked Ship of Destiny to take with me up to Edinburgh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I don’t think I was ready to appreciate the ending of this trilogy before now and boy it didn’t disappoint 🤩 I had to pick up The Wilful Princess and the Piebald Prince as soon as it came though the letterbox the day after finishing it as I didn’t want to stop reading Hobb and was blown away by that short story 🤯 I am desperately trying to finish the second half of Hell Bent in the next two days 🐇 so that I can start May with Fools Errand 😍 even though I’m terrified of the Tawny Man trilogy 😬 I am enjoying Hell Bent but it’s taken me a while to get my head back into the various societies as I read Ninth House a while ago 🤔 This month I sailed to the rescue of the Vivacia ⛵️ learnt where the fear of the Wit came from 🎠 and journeyed into the underworld 😈 •Ship of Destiny ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ •WPatPP ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ •Hell Bent (TBC) What was your favourite read this month? 🤓 #bookishcommunity #bookstagram #booksuk #readersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #fantasy #bookishfeatures #bookphile #booksbooksbooks #bookstagramfeature #bookfeaturepage #bookstagrammer #bookstagramuk #robinhobb #realmoftheelderlings #thewilfulprincessandthepiebaldprince #thetawnymantrilogy #tawnymantrilogy #liveshiptraders #shipofdestiny #ninthhouse #hellbent #leighbardugo

🌷 April! 💐 I’m really enjoying these posts to make me look through my camera roll and reflect on the month I’ve had - it’s been a delight! The best bits of the month have been hanging out with both of my lovely little nephews, it’s actually really nice of my brothers to both provide me with new best friends! I’ve also been to talks on spies at #histfest2024 at the British Library, and to a live recording of @saraandcariadsweirdosbookclub, which were both great. It’s been a month of cocktails, pizza, pasta, books, telling the cat to get off the worktop, baking cakes, comedy in chapels, hanging out with people I love, and just generally having a nice time! What’s been the highlight of your month? It doesn’t have to involve books!

Excuse me, Cameron, but what did you put in this book??? 😭 . I know all the reviews on goodreads are gushing about the romance in this novel and trust me, the romance and the spice and everything are there (!!!), but why did no one mention Magdalen’s dad so far (utterly parent goals) - ‘Half of your pain is felt by my whole heart’. And also Anika is the fierce friend everyone deserves in life. . I don’t believe this is a debut, the writing is too good and I read it in one sitting, which is the biggest compliment I could ever give a book, so I’ll leave you with that. . Also, I really want to be in Italy right now 💔 . Thanks @bookbreakuk for the copy and @thechamberofsecretbooks - we need to have a chat! 💗

🌟 Books I think I’ll love! 🌟 I’ve really loved seeing everyone’s 5 star predictions - it’s always nice to see what people are excited about reading! I don’t really do star ratings when I do reviews, because I’m just too indecisive, but these are books that I think I’m going to enjoy! I got started on The Maiden today, and I’m already loving it, and I think I’m going to go for The Nightingale next! Have you read any of these? Let me know which ones I should prioritise!

‘Sometimes it takes seeing someone you love as a stranger to notice all the changes to them.’ - The Wilful Princess and the Piebald Prince QOTD: Do you read short novellas? I rarely read books under 500 pages so for me this Hobb instalment is the shortest book I’ve read in a very long time 📚 I absolutely loved it though and I’m so glad @acourtoffantasyandsmut told me to read it before starting the Tawny Man trilogy 🤩 I thought it was really interesting to see where the hate of the Wit came from 🐺 and Hobb managed to break my heart several times in the 160 pages given to this tale 💔 Absolutely buzzing to start Fools Errand this week and see how this novella fits into the main storyline 👀 What is the shortest book you read recently? 🤓 #bookishcommunity #bookstagram #booksuk #readersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #fantasy #bookishfeatures #bookphile #booksbooksbooks #bookstagramfeature #bookfeaturepage #bookstagrammer #bookstagramuk #robinhobb #realmoftheelderlings #thewilfulprincessandthepiebaldprince #thetawnymantrilogy #tawnymantrilogy

book haul !!! 📖📖 funny story, when i saw the new covers bloom made for the kingmakers series, i immediately “ordered” them because i wanted the older covers (i like them more) only to realise i’d ordered the Brutal Birthright series instead ! obviously i didn’t cancel the order and then ordered the correct series (lol) before they go of print this month. if im being honest im not the biggest fan of the bloom editions so i needed to have these ! +++ Penelope Douglas’s new book as they are one of my auto buy authors and i am so so excited to enter the Hellbent universe as i loved Fall Away so so much <333 kicking my feet in excitement 🙂‍↕️ #books #booktok #bookstagram #booksuk #bookhaul

𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭, 𝐧𝐨𝐰, 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 🌷💗🌸🎀 ·˚ ༘ ੈ✩‧₊˚ I absolutely ADORED Taming 7, I’ll post a whole review on that at some point soon but I just had to jump straight into a new book or I would’ve been so caught up on Gibsie & Claire.. I’m about 40 pages into The Virgin Suicides, It’s a fairly short book and I’m slowly getting the just of it. It’s my first modern classic that i’m reading purely for fun so it’s very scary territory..🫣 My next book was kindly gifted by @kaleidoscopictours so thank you so much! ‘Humanity always believes it decides the fate of the whole world, and so it does, but never in the moment that it thinks it does. The future of thousands ripples like a serpent through the water, and the destiny of a ship becomes the destination of the world.’ 🐉 Ship of Destiny 🐉 What a finale 🤯 and what better way to celebrate #farseerfriday than by talking about this climactic end ⛵️ ‘When circumstances are right, unlikely people do extraordinary things. When the weight of the world is behind them, the push of events and time itself will align to make incredible things happen.’ My stomach was like snakes for 90% of the book 🐍 and the complexity of the woven storylines was amazing 🤩 Hobb enjoyed breaking my heart again 💔 and whilst I can’t pick a favourite trilogy, this world building expanded the world in ways I never expected 🌎 ‘Who loves you or who you love is not as significant as who you are. Too many folk, women and men, love the person they wish to be, as if by loving that person, or being loved by that person, they could attain the importance they long for.’ Unbelievably Malta became one of my favourites in the end 🤯 I also loved Wintrow’s arc and watching the two of them grow up throughout the series was special 🥹 I adored the dragon and the Rain Wilds 🦎 and was satisfied with Kennit and Kyle’s conclusions 😡 Althea, Brashen and the liveships also get a special shout out as I loved them too 💖 but I am also excited to get back to Fitz again soon 🐺 ‘In Sa, there are no extraordinary coincidences. 🍂Ordinary Human Failings - Megan Nolan 🍂 I normally write reviews almost immediately after finishing a book - I like to get my thoughts down as soon as possible, and also it helps avoid procrastination! But I really struggled with this one, because it left me feeling quite ambivalent. Ordinary Human Failings is a portrait of the Greens - a reclusive family who moved to a south London council estate from Ireland. In 1990, a young girl is found dead on the estate, and immediately suspicion falls on the family. The family are taken into hiding by a tabloid paper, and as the investigation continues, the family confronts their past. The central figure is Carmel, beautiful and ‘other worldly’, and living a life very different than the one she imagined for herself. We also meet her brother, Richie, who is a struggling alcoholic, and their father, John, who is quiet and distant. The story delves into their pasts, and how the consequences of ordinary human failings (gettit?) have led to where they are now. They are being interviewed by Tom, a reporter who epitomises the sleaze of the press in the 90’s. It’s objectively a good book. It’s well written, the characters are fully fleshed, and there were moments that I felt really invested in, like Richie’s story. But when I finished reading, I just felt a bit… flat. The story felt very quickly and neatly wrapped up, and I found myself beginning to skim read towards the end. I don’t know whether my experience of reading this book suffered a little under the weight of my own expectations. I’d read some really positive reviews, and the Women’s Prize long list is almost always a benchmark of something I’ll enjoy. I felt incredibly neutral at the end of this book, I neither liked it nor did I dislike it, hence struggling to know what to say about it, which has resulted in this very ambiguous review! What did you think of Ordinary Human Failings? And of your Women’s Prize reads so far? Let me know!

The Testaments | Margaret Atwood Genre: Utopian/Dystopian Stars: 5⭐️ Review: This book was full of twists and turns as you return to Gilead 15 years after the Handmaid’s tale. It details the lives of two young woman, one raised in Gilead and one raised in Canada, it also gives us a more detailed account of the going ons of the famous Aunt Lydia. This book explores the life of the Aunts, how to become an Aunt & why Aunt Lydia is as terrifying as she is portrayed to be. However the unexpected twist and revelations are crazy, you start to hear of the corruption within Gilead & how it will ultimately lead to its downfall. We still have no clear answer as to why Gilead fell, or how it came to cease existence but we are brought on a page turning journey about two sisters, an aunt and a mole within Gilead helping the resistance to fight back! Overall I really enjoyed this book and am fairly sad that it’s over. But also feel like it was well deserved as a Booker Prize book! #newbook #bookstagram #newbooktoread #books #bookstagram #reading #readmorebooks #booksuk #bookreview #readingreview #bookrecommendations #bookclub

Book review 📚 Five Survive by Holly Jackson ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 This was a fast paced, locked door, active shooter thriller. That being said, it wasn’t amazing and felt a little lacklustre for me. I think because I love AGGGTM so much I had really high hopes for this book and it didn’t live up to it. It was by no means bad, just not great. I did think that the twist was good but there was events that led up to the twist that just didn’t make sense to me. It should, in reality, have been revealed much earlier on but you’d have to read it to know what I mean, sorry. The plot.. Eight hours. Six friends. One sniper .. Eighteen year old Red and her friends are on a road trip in an RV, heading to the beach for Spring Break. It’s a long drive but spirits are high. Until the RV breaks down in the middle of nowhere. There’s no mobile phone reception and nobody around to help. And as the wheels are shot out, one by one, the friends realise that this is no accident. There’s a sniper out there in the dark watching them and he knows exactly who they are. One of the group has a secret that the sniper is willing to kill for. A game of cat-and-mouse plays out as the group desperately tries to get help and to work out which member of the group is the target. Buried secrets are forced to light in the cramped, claustrophobic setting of the RV, and tensions within the group will reach deadly levels. Not everyone will survive the night. #book #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #booklover #booknerd #bookaddict #bookstagram #bookphotography #bookrecommendations #bookcommunity #bookish #bookcommunity #booksuk #bookblogger #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookobsessed #fivesurvive #bookstagrammeruk

💫 Happy publication day! 💫 . So I was reading this and crying (as you do) and I had a meeting at work and my face was all red and it was not a cute look. . BUT Emily Henry has done it again - she Book Lovers-ed & Beach Read-ed me again with this swoony story. Was it a Funny Story? Yes. Was it absolutely heartbreaking at times and made me need a hug in real life? Also yes. . Do you want me to summarise it? Because I can, but you HAD to be there to fully understand it. Daphne and Miles find themselves as roommates after their partners realise they belong together, but all their moping around and listening to sad songs leads them to each other. And what a pair they make! There’s insane chemistry, amazing character growth and just a well rounded story that’s very Emily Henry. . There’s something about the way Ali Hazelwood and Emily Henry write men, they’re absolute kings. No one will ever top Charlie Lastra, but Miles was a close second. I just wanted to hug him and tell him that we see him and appreciate him and that all’s going to be alright. . ‘He wants it all, even the things he’d never let himself ask for, or won’t let himself have.’ ——— this absolutely ended me, felt it so so so deeply, like where was this book when I was younger??? (I inhaled the book on my phone, so don't come @ me for not using the uk cover. A trip to the book shop is scheduled for tomorrow ✌🏻)

so i finished powerless last night and oh my god !!!! 😱 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ my mind has been spiralling, i cannot get Kai and Paedyn out of my head. i have thought about them every second of today, i just want to have the second book right this minute so i can read more about their story plus i need to know what happens 😭 this is your typical romantasy story, it’s everything you could want in a romantasy novel but it is done so well. the plot, the characters. the romance. everything was done so well. luckily for me i haven’t read the hunger games or red queen so whilst i was reading this i didn’t notice any similarities with the two. i’ve been waiting for this book since lauren first spoke about the synopsis on her tiktok, i’ve watched every tiktok she’s made about the process of her writing this book and im so happy to have FINALLY read it, it’s surreal. the thumb war scene melted my freaking heart, it was such a heartwarming moment between the two MC’s. every scene with them together had a smile forming on my face. their connection was there from the start, their tension was burning and it was burning HOT. i could ramble about this book for years bc i loved it so so much +++ the teaser for Reckless at the end y’all !!!! @laurenrobertslibrary feel free to send an arc of reckless my way 🫶🏻💌 #powerless #powerlesslaurenroberts #booktok #bookstagrammer #bookstargram #booksuk #fantasybooks #romantasybooks #laurenroberts #explorepage

Lightlark by Alex Aster 5⭐️/5 I don’t think I felt about a book like this since I was in my fangirl/teen years. The blurb at the back says “Lie. Cheat. Betray.” Those are the only words you can trust. This fantasy novel revolves around 6 realms, each ruler of which has to compete in a deadly game every 100 years that lasts a 100 days on the island of Lightlark that only appears during this game. Each realm has an ability but also a curse that was put on hundreds of years when the games began and the island disappeared. This series (the second book is out now and called Nightbane but there’s more books to come) is a very easy read, it’s fun, exciting, and a really good and easy read. I would recommend this to those who don’t read much fantasy but want to ease themselves in. My boyfriend who isn’t a big reader read this and really enjoyed it which I think says a lot😅 If you read this, let me know what you thought!
