“They said I must die. They said that I stole the breath from men. And now they must steal mine.” This is the second novel I’ve read by this author and again I marvel at how captivating her storytelling is. Very reminiscent of the Bronte sisters, her narrative style highlights the deceptiveness of figuration. With an uncanny knack for anthropomorphism, the way in which she personifies location is transportive, it disturbs the sense of who or what is frightening and jumbles the distinction between image and word, the imagined and the visible. Inspired by true events, this is the story of Agnus Magnúsdóttir, the last person to be executed in Iceland. Convicted for her role in the murder of Natan Ketilsson in March 1828. While awaiting execution Agnus is sent to work on a farm in an isolated part of northern Iceland. There she tells her story to Tóti, a priest Agnus has mysteriously chosen to prepare her for execution. “I could have quietly gathered my belongings and left before it grew light, but where would I have gone? I knew only the valley……knew where it was scabbed with rock, knew the white-headed mountains and lake alive with swans, and the wrinkled skins of turf by the river. And the ravens, the constant, circling ravens.” Such a simple tale, painfully beautiful and well written, a dream for fans of historical fiction. #burialrites #hannahkent #historicalfiction #agnusmagnusdottir #aesthetic #bookaesthetic #darkaesthetic #literaturelover #literature #booksbooksbooks #books #Bookstagram #bookstagramireland #readersofinstagram #booksofinstangram #igbooks #igreaders #bookphotography #bookrecommendations #bookclub #booknerdigan #biblophile

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent "I understood that these people did not see me. I was two dead men. I was a burning farm. I was a knife. I was blood." It is 12:30 am. I work in the morning. And yet here I am, having just finished this book, feeling a little like I've just walked out of a funeral. This book is based on the true story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, a woman accused of murdering two men and sentenced to death in Iceland in 1830. In the months leading up to the execution, she stays with a farming family who despises her and has heard all the stories of the murder...except hers. If you're going to read this book, please do not look anything up about her beforehand. Go into it blind like I did and let this story unfold. Kent's imagery here, the way she paints the Icelandic valleys and builds the small farm homes around you with her words, is exceptionally well done. I found myself re-reading a few lines just because they were so evocative that reading them only once seemed a shame. You feel the cold, the difficulty of life in this period, the isolation of the setting, and it's easy to imagine yourself perched, shivering on a stool in a stinking thatched home listening to Agnes' story with the rest of the characters. At one point, I was reminded of those difficult kinds of nights spent with an upset friend baring their soul, hoping just to be heard and understood. This is not an uplifting story. There is passing mention of rape and infant mortality. It revolves around a murder and lives of peasant farmers in Iceland in the 1800s - it wasn't comfortable. It is bleak. But it's beautifully told. Read this. But save it for when you can get out and feel the sun on your face when you finish. (Not so) Happy reading 📚 Shell #burialrites #hannahkent #bookybelles #bookrecommendations #bookreviews #historicalfiction #bookstagram #booktok #bookclubofinstagram #readmorebooks #tbr #read #readwithus

Burial Rites by @hannahkentwrites 3.5/5 🌟 Ever wondered about 19th century rural Iceland? Well, me neither. I was curious though about the last woman executed in Iceland in 1830. This book dives into the story of Agnes Magnusdottir. Sentenced to death, Agnes awaits her fate in the custody of a local family, while a young assistant reverend, Toti, tries to offer her spiritual guidance. As Agnes recounts her past to Toti, we learn about her tumultuous upbringing, her complex relationships, and the events that led to the fatal murder night. Along the way, secrets are unearthed, relationships are tested, and Agnes’s true nature gradually emerges. With each twist and turn, ‘Burial Rites’ keeps us guessing until the very end. Hannah Kent spent many years researching the murders of 1828 and while this is a historical fiction the writer has used a lot of original sources (church and police records, letters and official documents) in the story itself. Quote: “It’s not fair. People claim to know you through the things you’ve done, and not by sitting down and listening to you speak for yourself.” R. #BurialRites #HannahKent #Bookrant #HistoricalFiction #Bookreview #BookRecommendation #Literature #Fiction #ReadingList #iceland

We are delighted to welcome back author, dowser and experiential archaeologist, Maria Wheatley for a rare appearance. Maria will talk to us about The Lost Priesthood of the Stones and share her international research, undertaken over many years, into the burial rites of ancient peoples who raised the standing stones in our own landscape. She will also present evidence that their harnessing of natural earth energies persisted in Medieval cathedral construction and, in some contexts, into present day ceremony. The meeting will take place on Wednesday 17 April in Christchurch Church Hall, Avenue Road, Great Malvern, WR14 3AY. Doors open at 7pm. for complementary tea, coffee and biscuits. ✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨ Burial Rites by Hannah Kent ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 QOTD: What are you currently reading? This is such a sad story, made sadder by the fact that it’s a true story, albeit a fictionalised account. It’s a beautifully written tale of a woman awaiting her execution on a farm in Iceland. I really liked all the characters in this. I liked watching them soften to Agnes the more they got to know her, the longer she was with them, especially Margrét. In fact, I think Margrét was my favourite character in the end. She was incredibly kind even against her better judgement and I loved her for that. I did find this lacking a real emotional tug for me personally, though. While the story is sad, I didn’t FEEL that sadness. There were moments I felt for sure would have dragged some emotion out of me had they been written differently. I just felt a little detached from the whole thing, which is a shame because it’s a good, well-written story.

This was a bookclub choice and proved to be a surprise hit, in that we all enjoyed it but none of us could really say why. Burial Rites is set in Iceland during the time of the last public execution and features the woman convicted of murder (and therefore awaiting the death penalty), the priest she confides in, and the family she lives with during her final months as a prisoner. If it sounds bleak, that’s because it is - the harsh Icelandic winters and the living conditions for all but the most affluent are described in stark detail. But it’s also well written with an engaging plot and a surprisingly warm backstory. I was interested to learn that the author was inspired to write this story after coming to a remote North Iceland town from Australia as a young exchange student. I can’t really imagine how much of a geographical shock this would be for a teenager travelling on her own and the isolation she describes has obviously impacted on her writing, helping her (and the reader) to empathise with the central character. Well worth a read and I’ll be interested to see what Kent does next. After my recent trip to Iceland, I listened to BURIAL RITES by Hannah Kent. It’s a fictionalized version of the true story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, the last woman to be executed in Iceland in 1830. Kent conducted years of research into historical records and documents to recreate the events surrounding Agnes’ life, trial, and death while using her imagination to fill in gaps and bring the story to life. It’s a heartbreaking and haunting read about harsh realities and lonlieness. It beautifully explores prejudice, empathy, and the human spirit. If you’re a fan of historical fiction and the dark corners of history, give it a read! #hannahkent #ritosfunerarios #burialrites #literaturaaustraliana #books #bookstagram #libros #bookstagrammer #lector #bibliotecario #reader #booklover #bookstagramargentina #lecturasrecomendadas #queleer #librosrecomendados #lecturas #booksbooksbooks

Burial Rites 📖 ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Burial Rites was a book club pick and a story I never would have found or likely chosen on my own but I’m happy I read it. A sad story of an Icelandic woman accused of murder and sentenced to be executed. The writing was lovely and atmospheric. It made me interested and curious about Icelandic history and culture. Based on a real woman and true events it was both heartbreaking and haunting. Book Club was so much fun. I look forward to it every month. The images in this post feature Carl, a garden figurine of mine, who lost his head last summer. It seemed appropriate decor for a story about an impending beheading. #bookclub #burialrites #iceland🇮🇸 #historicalfiction #bookstagram #booksandfriends

BURIAL RITES BY HANNAH KENT 🫀🗡️⛰️ Tragic. Powerful. A masterpiece. This book tells the story of Agnes, a woman with a tumultuous past sentenced to death in Iceland, 1829. While awaiting her execution date, she is sent to live with the family that resides in a farm that she once lived in with a foster family. It is here that she reveals her story to the reader. Kent’s prose was impactful and extremely well-written, and had me glued to the novel. I could just picture the beautiful mountains of northern Iceland with harsh winds and small hovels. I was struck by the personification of objects on every page. Kent was able to turn wind, weather, time, light, and even clouds into sinister or troubled beings. This story was beautifully crafted, and I will definitely be thinking about it for some time to come. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #burialrites #iceland #bookreview #bookstagram #darkaesthetic

Burial Rites (Ritus-ritus Pemakaman) Hannah Kent Kondisi baru, segel 40K (harga normal 78K) . . . Lambat laun sikap keluarga Jónsson mulai mencair. Mereka ikut mendengarkan ketika Agnes menuturkan kisah hidupnya kepada Tóti. Hari-hari bergulir tanpa terasa, dan tanggal pelaksanaan hukuman mati semakin dekat… . . . . . . #burialrites #ritusrituspemakaman #hannahkent #novelterjemahan #sastraterjemahan #noveldiskon #bukudiskon #bukumurah

⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Burial Rites by Hannah Kent - Review Hannah Kent's debut novel is in short terms an emotional work of art. In the early 1800s, 'Burial Rites' is set in a mystic landscape of Iceland. There we follow Agnes who is awaiting execution as she is charged with murder of her former master. In her last days, Agnes is housed with a family - much to their horror and disgust - who avoid her, leaving Agnes with only a priest to talk to. While the priest finally gets Agnes to open up and talk about her life; the women of the household learn that there's another side to Agnes' story that most people don't know or don't want to know about. Agnes' existence is heartbreaking and demanding while it fights between compassion and forgiveness from itself as well as those surrounding. I finished this book on the 1st March, and I still think about Agnes Magnusdottir daily. The book is inspired by the last executions held in Iceland; Kent mentioning in her notes that while some fiction, the people and some events are based on the true story of Agnes as Kent had access to records from the original execution. The book is heartbreaking and devastatingly beautiful. An obvious 5 star book for me and even though it's a slow burner; I was captivated all the way through. Although I liked Kents' other books - 'Devotion' and 'The Good People' - 'Burial Rites' will always be my favourite. This story will stay with me for a while, and my heart will always ache for this version of Agnes Magnusdottir. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksofinstagram #bookinstagram #womenintranslation #translatedauthors #booksbooksbooks #booklover #bookcommunity #booktok #book #books #hannahkent #burialrites #devotion #thegoodpeople #bookrecommendation

🩷🅵🅴🅱🆁🆄🅰🆁🆈 🆁🅴🅰🅳🆂🩷 A small win for me! I was able to read two books last month. 💐 📖 𝓛𝓸𝓿𝓮 𝓲𝓷 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓣𝓲𝓶𝓮 𝓸𝓯 𝓢𝓮𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓵 𝓚𝓲𝓵𝓵𝓮𝓻𝓼 As a true crime fan, I bought the book because of its interesting title. AND that’s it. There are kilig moments here and there, but as the story progress, it fell short of my expectations. But what I like about this book: ❤️‍🔥Phoebe was able to redeem herself when she decided to take a chance on love. After all the trauma she has gone through, she def deserves to love and be loved back. Also, Sam is a walking green flag loljk. ❤️‍🔥The reality of women not being safe anywhere, so I understand where Phoebe is coming from. #moresafespacesforwomen 📖 𝕭𝖚𝖗𝖎𝖆𝖑 𝕽𝖎𝖙𝖊𝖘 A randomly bought this secondhand book on the orange app, and I'm so happy I did. Words aren't enough to describe how beautiful this novel is. Set in the 19th-century, Burial Rites follows the life of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, the last woman to be executed in Iceland. What I like about this book: ❤️‍🔥The way people, especially men, treat women before and now is no different. The book touches the themes of power dynamics & social stigma, which are evident during the trial in a male-dominated legal system. ❤️‍🔥Hannah Kent's writing. This is one of the most beautifully written book I've ever read. I sometimes find myself reading the sentences twice just to savor every word. Raw and heartbreaking. A must-read for those who love historical fiction. I will always remember you, Agnes. 😭 𝔽𝕒𝕧𝕖 ℚ𝕦𝕠𝕥𝕖: "They will see the whore, the madwoman, the murderess, the female dripping blood into the grass and laughing with her mouth choked with dirt. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - “I imagine, then, that we are all candle flames, greasy-bright, fluttering in the darkness and the howl of the wind, and in the stillness of the room I hear footsteps, awful coming footsteps, coming to blow me out and send my life up away from me in a gray wreath of smoke. I will vanish into the air and the night. They will blow us all out, one by one, until it is only their own light by which they see themselves. Where will I be then?” - So dang good. Haunting, fictionalized story based on real events of the last person to be beheaded in Iceland. They will say "Agnes" and see the spider, the witch caught in the webbing of her own fateful weaving. They might see the lamb circled by ravens, bleating for a lost mother. But they will not see me. I will not be there." - Hannah Kent, Burial Rites Inspired by true events, Burial Rites tells the harrowing tale of Agnes, a woman in 19th-century Iceland found guilty of murder and sentenced to die. This Nordic historical fiction is meticulously researched, and after reading the acknowledgement section, I'm not surprised to learn that Kent spent years researching Iceland, Icelandic culture, stories and language (along with the events that unfolded for Agnes) years before she put pen to paper. Whilst she awaits her date of execution, Agnes is housed at a farm run by the local District Commissioner, his wife and their two daughters. She seeks out the guidance of a young priest, Toti, to lead her through her final days, yet it is not his spiritual guidance she seeks, for Agnes longs for her story, her side of events to be known before her day of execution. It is with Toti and the family she is staying with that we begin to learn the tragic events that have led Agnus to her fate. It is through class, politics, and the severe imbalance between Master and servant and men and women that we learn in ruthless times, truth is no precursor for justice. Bleak, atmospheric and haunting. I cannot believe this is a debut novel. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.5/5 This book is historical fiction based on the real woman who was the last person to be executed by beheading in Iceland in the 1800s. Agnes is sentenced to execution but while she is awaiting the day, she is sentenced to work on the farm of a government official in her hometown and requests a local priest in training to do her last rites, who is curious as to why she requested him. I enjoyed this story but I felt like it started off quite slowly and I enjoyed significantly more after the midway point. It’s a story of love, loss, reputation, and redemption. 🇮🇸Burial Rites by Hannah Kent 🇮🇸 Set in Iceland 1829, the story of Agnes awaiting trial for murder. This is based on the true events (hopefully this isn’t a spoiler!) of Agnes Magnusdottir and two others who were the last to be executed in Iceland. The story tells of Agnes’ time with a family and a reverend while she awaits execution and of the events leading to her charge and trial. I found this really moving and loved the writing, the descriptions and the settings. I just felt for Agnes and Toti the reverend so much and how different their lives could (should?) have been. This is one of the best books I have ever read so of course I gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Burial Rites by Hannah Kent is based on the true story of Agnes, the last woman sentenced to death in Iceland, having been convicted of murder. While awaiting death Agnes lives with the district officer and his family and as time goes on more and more of Agnes’s story is revealed. For any novel this is amazing but it being a debut makes it even better in my eyes. Definitely worth a read. Have you read this or do you have any similar recommendations? #redclayrunningwaters Lessor known people in history, who nevertheless played a role in changing history's course, have always fascinated me. The fact that John and Sarah Ridge's story (so iconic of the times they lived in) was so little-known was one of the things that drew me to write a book, Red Clay, Running Waters, about their lives. When Sherpard.com asked me to feature books I would recommend under this category, it took no time at all to come up with some of my favorite books about other fascinating little-known people in history. Check out my recommendations at the link below and prepared to be surprised and enlightened. https://shepherd.com/best-books/little-known-people-in-history #historicalfiction #historicalfictionbooks #histfic #hfchitchat #redclayrunningwaters #prizeforthefire #burialrites #queenofthedesert #ascandalouslife #booth #bookstagrammer

#MyWritingInspirations As I get closer to releasing Janet’s Yellow Butterflies, I have been reflecting on some of the literature, media and memories that inspired ideas for it. Today’s inspiration is the novel Burial Rites, by Australian author Hannah Kent. Set in 1829, it is the true story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, who is sentenced to death for her involvement in a double murder. Agnes will become the last person executed in Iceland, and is sent to live on a farm for the months leading up to her execution. Initially her host family does not interact with her, but as time passes, circumstances change and they realise that she is human too, just like them. Hannah has very convincingly put herself into Agnes’s shoes, painting a vivid picture of her daily struggle to come to terms with her imminent fate. There are many parallels with Agnes and Janet’s stories. Janet’s Yellow Butterflies is also based on a real and tragic event – Janet was the last person executed in her homeland, in her case for alleged witchcraft, in 1727 in the British Isles. Both Agnes and Janet lived in a time and place where women were often not only denied a voice, but as women condemned, they were suppressed and ostracised. Like Hannah, I have tried to tap into the psyche of Janet, and of her daughter who escaped the execution, to gain a deeper understanding of their plights. I have tried to imagine what their lives might have been like as real people with families, hopes and challenges, just like us. I like to think that the retelling of these stories, even with some fictional reimagining as in Janet’s Yellow Butterflies, helps keep the memories of these women alive, after all that they went through. @hannahkentwrites Grave image: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/187420909/agnes-magnusdottir #burialrites #hannahkent #agnesmagnúsdóttir #favouriteauthors #favouritebooks #historicalfictionscotland #historicalfictionaustralia #1700s #witch #familyhistory #janethorne #witchesstone #australianauthor #emmaelizabethauthor #emmaelizabeth

📖 BOOK REVIEW - BURIAL RITES by Hannah Kent . I read Devotion by Hannah Kent last year, I adored it so much it became my book of the year and I immediately set out to read everything she has written. I was not disappointed by Burial Rites! . Set in Iceland in the late 19th Century, it tells the story of the last woman to be executed in the country, Agnes Magnúsdóttir who was co-accused in a double murder. Hannah Kent’s outstanding ability to bring nature, in all its cruelty and beauty, to life once again took my breath away. As we learn about Agnes’s tragic life and her final days with the family tasked with holding her before her execution, I was swept away by Kent’s absorbing, lyrical prose which connects the reader so vividly to the emotions of her characters . Hannah Kent has become a firm favourite author of mine. I love her exquisite writing style, emotive use of language and outstanding sense of time and place. The characters she creates are ones who will stay with you forever. If you are yet to read any of her novels, then I urge you to do so! . #bookreview #burialrites #hannahkent #historicalfiction #highlyrecommendedbook #readinjanuary2024 #bookstagram #ukbookstagram #cosybooks #booksandblankets #booksandsocks

📚JANUARY WRAP UP 📚 Well the longest month of the year is finally over and it’s been a great reading month for me! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading from my TBR and got to some long neglected books finally! I had a good variety of genres too. I’ve finally got my reading mojo back and it’s all down to reading what I want, when I want. Hurrah for mood reading! . Difficult to name a favourite, but THE WHISPERING MUSE just pips the others to the post. I absolutely adored every page! I’m Glad My Mom Died, Burial Rites and The Beholders all deserve mentions for being huge highlights . I managed 8 books this month, with four counting towards reading challenges I’m taking part in - I’m very happy with that! . Have you read any of these books? . . . . #libros #book #booklover #instaread #books #bookaholic #instabook #reading #literature #library #bookme #bookshelf #books4ever #bookstagram #booknerd #librosenespañol #instagood #reader #reading #lectora #womanwriter #mujeresescritoras #instalibros #hannahkent #burialrites #ritosfunerarios #thegoodpeople #losbuenos #devotion #devocion #albacontemporanea

🧚 Devotion by Hannah Kent 🧚 lets us into the life of Hanne, a teenager part of a Lutheran family in the 19th century. Devotion tells the story of forbidden intimacies bound in a migration tale to South Australia. This is SO beautiful. I was consistently enthralled by the writing in this - particularly taken in by the author’s ability to nestle into human emotion and connecting this with nature, the world, things that we view as bigger than us. The incredibly personal was always interwoven with that which is universal, becoming a very spiritual read. Without giving away any spoilers, I feel like this love story is going to stay with me for a long time; I LOVED our lead characters. The book did sort of lose me at the point when ~that big thing happened. But I got back into it, it just felt like a bit of a gear shift. The first part of the book was my favourite though. ⭐️4/5⭐️

💫Bookish Thoughts 💫 Devotion by Hannah Kent Having read and adored Burial Rites by Hannah Kent last year, I was keen to read more by this author and picked up her latest book, Devotion. This is another historical fiction book that takes the reader from Prussia across the oceans to South Australia as we follow the lives of a Lutheran community, escaping religious persecution and seeking a new life near Adelaide. The novel is told through the eyes of Hanna, a teenage girl, with synaesthesia who sees and hears things in the natural world that no one else can. These differences mark her out as “other” in their tightknit community, and she feels left-out from the other girls her age until Thea and her family join their village, and the two girls form an immediate connection. The book takes us on an arduous six month journey across the oceans as the Lutheran community seeks a better life. Kent is a beautiful writer, and the sea journey and risks are so masterfully described that I could feel myself stuck in the hold during an Atlantic storm: the fear, darkness and sickness and then how they rebuild their community on the other side of the world, the aspects of colonialism where thought provoking with the oppressed becoming the oppressors. The book, though, does take a completely unexpected twist, which I didn’t see coming and may not be for everyone. At first, I found really jarring, but as the story progressed, it started to make more sense and offered a different dimension to the tale. Overall, I found this a beautiful, tender, sapphic love story – I adore Kent’s lyrical language and how she described the beauty of nature in Australia. Highly recommend, but if you’re not a magic realism fan, then it may not gel entirely for you… With thanks to @netgalley and the publisher @picador for this ARC in return for an honest review. #devotion #hannahkent #burialrites #24countriesin24 #24countriesin2024 #sapphicliterature #sapphiclove #lgbtqbooks #irishbookstagram #irishbookblogger #irishbookstas #bookblogger #bookstagramireland #bookrecommendations

After much arguing with two determined buyers (you know who you are) we were talked into making a Jesus Malverde bust with no base. I'm told these are fantastic if you collection demands a smaller Malverde because you can't be bothered rehanging some frames 😜 . Anyway, now that that is solved I decided to make a couple more for the etsy store. If this is your thing, have at it. Red felt bottom and comes in at almost 11 inches or 275mm. We've also restocked the sandstone dogu. These are very nice. Heavy weathering and a lovely weight. Link to the store is in the bio or order through dm. Wishing you all a productive 2024. Where Beauty Met Death - My dream of travelling to Iceland solidified when I read the book "Burial Rites", a novel based on the true story of the last execution in Iceland. A moving story set in a harsh but beautiful place. Island, 19th century. Agnes Magnusdottir, a 34 house servant  is sentenced to death for her part in murder of her lover. Awaiting her execution, she is placed with a family of crofters. No one trusts Agnes, everyone is afraid of her. But after months of living and working together, Jonsdottir family changes her opinion about her. Burial Rites  is so well written that it was hard for me to believe it was a debut novel. It was a beautiful and sad story. I loved the atmosphere in the book, the dramatic  Icelandic landscapes,  the harsh climat, people living isolated, simple ond often brutal life. The book is loaded with emotions, none of them positive. It's a slowburn, but I couldn't stop reading and finish it in one day. . . . . . #burialrites #hannahkent #picador #betweenthecovers #hisfic #besthistoricalfiction #bookreview #recommendedbooks #bookreader #readmorebooks #booksofinstagram #readinglist

• mini review • burial rites by hannah kent • 5 stars • Historical fiction taking place in 19th century Iceland, inspired by real events. It follows Agnes, a woman condemned for a double murder and sentenced to death. We see her life in the last few months before her execution, amongst the family that has been obliged to take her in and the priest tasked with absolving her. This book absolutely shattered me,. The writing was eerie and beautiful, perfectly showing the bleak atmosphere of the Icelandic setting and of the story. There was some real emotional moments during Agnes life amongst her guardians and the ending was especially haunting to read. The characters were all compelling in their complexity, and the gorgeous writing made the society they lived in come alive. An impressive debut novel, Burial Rites is easily a five star and favourite read. • #burialrites #hannahkent #historicalfiction #literaryfiction #litfic #mystery #bookstagram #bookworm #booklover #prettybooks #prettybookcover #readmyshelf2024

🎀*Book Themes*🎀 Hello Friends... Comment your last 3 Best reads. I have Enjoyed these 3 books ranking them from my most favourite to least favourite 1) The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. Rating 4.5/5 Alaska in 1920, is harsh in its wilderness especially for the newly arrived couple. Jack and Mabel are childless. Hearts full of despair and loneliness going through hardships to meet their ends. They make a child out of snow which magically disappears, and a girl named Faina is found running around. The book takes you through a huge spectra of emotions and will stick with you for a long time after you finish it. 2) Circe by Madeline Miller. Rating 4/5 Greek mythology never disappoints you. Circe is a character very strong with her own weaknesses. She knows how to give a fight. She knows how to show the world a brave face and survive amongst all the toxic dominating males. A thoroughly enjoyable book. Beautifully written and intricately crafted, will touch your hearts for sure. 3) Burial Rites by Hanna Kent Rating 4/5 Inspired by a true story , a young lady accused of murder awaits her execution on an isolated farm with a family. Family's reluctance and fear to host a murderer and stay with her is written intricately. Agnes's life depends on what stories other people tell about her. What does a heart goes through when there is an uncertain date of execution, yet death is certain on a near date. A lyrical prose of emotions, frustration, dilemma and Hope. #bookrecommendations #bookreview #bookclub #readersofinstagram #books #booklover #bookstagram #library #bookworm #tbr #bookcommunity #bookblogger #bookcommunity #hannakent #burialriteshannahkent #burialrites #thesnowchild #eowynivey #circe #madelinemiller #booksbooksbooks #instabooks #bookheist

Where is your current read taking you? 🌏 Mine - Hannah Kent’s Burial Rites - is taking me to Iceland in the early 1800s, part of my #IcelandicJanuary reading. 🇮🇸 One of the joys of life is to take you to other places and times, and to let you inhabit other people’s lives. Not that 1800s Iceland is particularly appealing so far! It does make me grateful for safety and security, central heating, warm clothes and three meals a day though. 🙏🏽 My pic today is some of the books I mentioned in my recommendations triangulation post two days ago, some great books there. If you are a lover of beautiful prose, the books on either end are sublime. I am an avid reader but rarely do book posts. However, I’ve just pulled myself together after finishing this (had to do some deep breathing and tear wiping) so am posting to recommend. Ten years after it was published, I’ve got round to reading Burial Rites by Hannah Kent and oh my goodness…. Based on the true story of an Icelandic woman accused of murder and sentenced to death, this is the story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir. I won’t say more than that about the plot other than to say, it won’t be for everyone. It’s a very slow burner and you wont get action and plot twists - but my god it was moving, captivating in its descriptions and completely devastating. #burialrites

Book(s) of the week. The last four of last year. Admittedly, one took longer than all the other three, which were consumed in one day (one in the bath) I've been blessed with a mere (!) 18 books for Christmas, plus the three I bought just before Christmas. I love a pop-up book. The boy child was terrified of pop-up books as a baby, literally screaming his tiny head off. Transition rites Regarding to Arnold van Gennep, death is not sudden, in straightforward biological terms. It means that what follows after physical death is social death. The interval between the two is marked by ritual. Immediately after physical death the body becomes liminal, dangerously in between. The person no longer breathes, but their physical form exists. For their body and belongings to move on, funeral rites must be held, at the conclusion of which the person becomes socially dead and to a greater or lesser degree, no longer perceived as active in the community. You also enter a different state when you hear the fireworks exploding everywhere. With the noise, you may not be able to think or walk normally. In this sense, your ordinary mindscape is shattered and you enter into a liminal state created by the fireworks, which is utterly different from your normal life. On the one hand, fireworks are used to scare away evil forces. On the other hand, they are used to attract auspicious forces. So what are you inviting for the new year? What do you think, what kind of rites of passage Ötzi might have celebrated? I’ve been obsessed with Bónus since I first went to Iceland years ago and can’t walk past one without going in (think Lidl but with a whole refrigerated room full of Skyr and a giant pink pig everywhere).

#hannahkent #burialrites #historicalfiction #prerazmišljaton2023 #novembar #magla

I’ve been hoarding books to read during the cold weather! So here’s a little haul. Yesterday was the first snow. It’s officially time to get cozy! ❄️

🐦‍⬛ Burial Rites review 🐦‍⬛ Based on a true story, in northern Iceland, 1829, Angus is condemned to death for murdering her lover. A local family are forced to take her in as she awaits her execution date. But all is not as it seems and time is running out to help her. I really enjoyed Devotion by Hannah Kent so I was excited to read her first novel #BurialRites. Historical fiction is my favourite genre and I recently went to Iceland so this seemed the perfect novel! This is a haunting memorable novel which has had a lot of praise; though I preferred Devotion, this is still a good read for historical fiction fans!
