Book of the month: The Guernsey Literary And The Potato Peel Society by @pallavigurl As this story goes, told in the form of letters in 1946, thirty two year old Juliet Ashton, the writer of the popular Izzy Bickerstaff series and book, is determined to write something different, under her own name, rather than the pseudonym that she has been using. By chance, she gets a letter from a Dawsey Adams, who had seen her name written in the front of a used book that he bought. Dawsey and Juliet start a regular correspondence. Anyone who knows me knows that one of my reading rules I have adhered to since I was younger is simply: if a book has been adapted into a movie or TV series, I need to read the book first. That being said, I stumbled across the trailer for “the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” on Netflix many times. I really wanted to see it but kept telling myself that I had to read the book first. Finally I bought the book, and as I’m sure you can guess, I was not disappointed. Written entirely in letters from and to Juliet Ashton, a writer from London and the people of the island of Guernsey in 1946 after the German Occupation, the book tells the tale of a roast pig, potato peel pie, and a group of people who came together over a love of books during a turbulent time. The Wartime Book Club by Kate Thompson is a truly special and incredible book. The characters are so realistic and endearing. It's set during WWII, in Nazi-occupied Jersey, a channel island which is part of the U.K., but geographically very close to France. It was so exciting to 'visit' this place, Jersey, that I've never been to before, or even knew much about. Before I read this book, I didn't realize how much closer Jersey is to France than England, or that they have their own language, Jèrriais (although English is predominantly spoken there). This book isn't just about the war itself, but what it's really about is standing up to censorship. Books are how these people coped with their bleak existence under occupation, made them forget their troubles and grief for a chapter at a time. "Books are medicine." It's a timely warning and reminder of what can happen when totalitarians take over and steal away our freedoms. You will be rooting for these characters, and grieving their losses. This book is poignant and wonderful, and it will stick with me for a long time. I learned so much and felt so much, too. This is one of my favorite books I've read so far this year. This will for sure my my top reads list of 2024! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed The Little Wartime Library (also by Kate Thompson), The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak, or The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Anne Shaffer and Annie Barrows . 💌BOOK REVIEW💌 “I don’t want to be married just to be married. I can’t think of anything lonelier than spending the rest of my life with someone I can’t talk to, or worse, someone I can’t be silent with.” I saw a lot of great reviews about this book and many people here on bookstagram recommended it. For some reason, I decided to actually pick it up and read. And I must say I did enjoy this book. The book follows two timelines in Guernsey and England during World War II and post-war. I haven’t read any books set in Guernsey before, that’s why I was extremely interested in this one. As a big fan of snail mail, I really enjoyed this letter format book and the writing style. I honestly loved all the characters in this book and was captivated by their bravery and ability to survive and find some enjoyment even during those dark times. I wasn’t aware of the fact that the island was occupied by German armies throughout the whole war and the islanders had no connection to the outside world. I am glad I read this book and would definitely recommend it. “Reading good books ruins you for enjoying bad books.” 💭Do you like to read historical fiction? What is your favourite period? "We clung to books and to our friends; they reminded us that we had another part to us" 🌸I am so in love with this story and was incredibly disappointed when I finished it because I didn't want it to end! ⭐This is a story about the German Occupation during WWII on the channel island of Guernsey. It sounded interesting and for $5, I thought, “why not””. Fredrik Backman is now one of my very favourite authors. ♥️ 📘The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. I love everything about this book! 😊 📘No Exit by Taylor Adams. I couldn’t put this book down. Bara titeln gjorde den ju lockande, men jag ville gärna läsa boken först. Boken tog jag med i min Boktolva i år och i början av februari läste jag den äntligen. I det stora hela har de gjort det väldigt bra. Lite orättvist så jämförs ju bok och film, oavsett om jag vill det eller ej. Jag är helt klart inte glad i alla ändringar de har gjort. Speciellt inte den med Juliet och hennes relation med Mark. En del av hennes starka personlighet gick förlorad där, tycker jag. Guernseys litteratur- och potatisskalspajssällskap får en fyra i betyg. Jag är helt säker på att det är vad jag hade tyckt om den, om jag inte hade läst boken. Den är mysig, charmig och får mig ändå att må bra. En fin historia, utan tvekan. OBS! Currently reading: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. You may remember I watched this movie last year, and was determined to read the book. I had tried in 2019 and quickly gave up due to the letter format. Then, I tried again after watching the movie and still couldn’t get into it. Well, third time is the charm! The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows Our next novel introduces us to writer, Juliet Ashton. Juliet became known during WW2 for her comedic works talking about wartime life in England. Now having made a name for herself, she’s looking for a new project. A story present itself to Julia, first in the form of a letter. Dawsey Adams lives on Guernsey island in the English Channel, and enlists Juliet to help him learn more about the author Charles Lamb. Through Dawsey, Juliet learns of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The group initially formed as a cover to hide an illegal pig roast that they held while under German occupation, but in order to maintain appearances, became a group of truly dedicated readers. In learning about the group, Juliet is introduced to many of its members, and slowly the picture of life on the island during the war begins to form. Apparently the theme of March is accidentally reading WW2 fiction, which as I’ve said many times before, is not my favourite. This, however, I loved. The entire story is presented as a series of letters, which was a really fun and interesting idea. The entire cast of characters is completely endearing, and though at times the content is very dark and heart wrenching, the overall tone of the book is light and quirky. The pacing is perfect, and well balanced in terms of the emotions it elicits. This is just excellent storytelling.
