In it, he candidly talks about his harrowing experience suffering a brain hemorrhage/traumatic brain injury ( #TBI) that landed him in a 2 week coma and close to death. Although Magary narrates most of the book himself, to capture the times when he was unconscious, we get the perspective of his close friends and family through a number of different narrators. It’s especially emotional to hear first person accounts from his wife and parents. In the aftermath of his injury/coma, Magary talks about the struggles in his recovery — learning to be functional again despite some serious sensory, emotional, and cognitive deficits. I know a lot of people like this local author. But has anyone read this and thought it was almost exactly like Outer Banks by Anne Rivers Siddons? There’s nothing better than listening to the sound of the ocean, my toes in the sand, and my mind off in a new place, thanks to a great book! This week I went to a small town in North Carolina (Book Lovers), a 1999 Blockbuster (The Night Shift), a Canadian lake town (Every Summer After), Sweet Apple, Georgia (The Night the Lights Went Out), a gorgeous mansion outside of NYC (The Housemaid), and a Vermont lake (The House Across the Lake). I loved the themes involving loyal, dependable friendships and being strong during difficult life situations. It also deals with loss and regret. We all need an older, wiser friend like Sugar. “Do you think you’re the only woman who’s ever had to live a life she hadn’t planned on? Or even wanted? Life is hard business; we both know that. Is #memoirmonday a thing? If so, i can get on board. If books can open a window to others lives and feelings, memoirs are a VIP pass. It never ceases to amaze me how the authors put themselves out in the open. There are so many interesting lives and it's fascinating to learn what experiences lead the author into the headspace or point in life they are at. I also love listening to memoirs especially if they are narrated by the author. Which is why some of my favorites like Crying in H mart and In The Shadow of the Mountain are not pictured! If you are looking for a light, fluffy chick-lit novel by the pool, this is not it. It’s only my second Karen White book, but based on what I know so far, her books aren’t it. They are however well written with characters you will love (or love to hate).

Another single day read for The Night the Lights Went Out. I wasn’t sure what to expect with Drew Magary’s memoir; I always enjoyed his writings on old Deadspin but was unsure how it would translate to memoir form. All that said, this was truly a good read. The writing style exactly what you’d expect from Drew in the best way possible and his level of introspection throughout was unexpected. I have a nonfiction recommendation for you, The Night the Lights Went Out by Drew Magary. This memoir was beautifully written, and well worth reading (in spite of all the swearing🙃). Drew Magary, writer, inexplicably fell down at a party, hit his head, and suffered a traumatic brain injury. This is his story of the experience and aftermath, peppered with constant dark humor and dad jokes. I love his sense of humor and laughed aloud multiple times, always wanting to read the funny bits aloud to my husband, even though he had literally just read the book the week before I did. Drew’s account is fascinating, and his reflections meaningful and heartfelt. He is brutally honest in his self-reflection, and it’s vulnerable and human in a way that made me root for him and his family. I highly recommend this, and also his fictional book, The Hike. That one still sits in my brain—it was disturbing in the best way. Thanks to @netgalley and @harmony_books for the advance copy.☺️ P.S. I was shocked when he had the brain injury that this book is about, and then happy when he pulled through and came back to writing. This book is good but feels mildly too long and minorly repetitive. I suppose that’s what recovering from a brain injury feels like, so he’s earned it. My favorite parts were the interviews with his family & friends in the first half of the book. Apparently my schedule from work and gardening to work and floor installation could use some improvement. I’m a day late, but The Night the Lights Went Out had a book birthday yesterday. Not a spooky book, but a medical memoir about Drew Magary ,and the traumatic brain injury he suffered in 2018. It could have had a very different ending, one which would have left his friends and family grief stricken. Drew had no idea his life would change in an instant. He fell and suffered a brain hemorrhage and was put into a medically induced coma. Here is where he got lucky, he woke up, and not everyone does, but his journey will not be an easy one. On TV, if something like this happens, the person always seems to wake up with no long-term side effects. The reality is much different. Recovery varies and finding the inner strength to keep pushing even when you fail takes a lot of strength. Is he the same as he was before this incident? No, but he fought every day to gain as much of himself back as he could. This was an honest look at not only what he went through, but also what this traumatic event did to his friends and loved ones. Their stories about what happened while his lights were out were heartbreaking and hopeful. Reading about his journey was inspiring and made me stop and remember how fragile life can be. A relatable and humorous memoir.
