Every one of Dr. Damour’s books has given me a shift in my parenting. Untangled and Under Pressure were eye opening and helped me see the shifts of preteen behaviors for what they are (part of growing and changing brains) and this one was excellent timing as I’m in the thick of the switch from teen to adult. . I am fascinated by human behavior and brain development and this book gives a clear view of exactly what is happening in these brains and tips on how to help navigate these years. It is obvious and attainable but man do I need those reminders. . My favorite parts are where she clearly states that bad, sad, mad, overwhelm are not negatives as long as they are managed appropriately. I hear so much about keeping happy and that just isn’t real life. . Anyways, it’s good. Με προοπτικές για κάτι υπέροχο... Έπειτα ξεκινά το χάος. Χαρακτήρες αδιάφοροι, διάλογοι που δεν πείθουν, καταστάσεις που αδυνατείς να πιστέψεις ότι συμβαίνουν, που υπάρχουν μόνο και μόνο για να αυξηθούν οι σελίδες του βιβλίου. Ειλικρινά, τι να πω. Για παράδειγμα, θέλει η πρωταγωνίστρια να συμμαζέψει το σπίτι της μετά από ένα πάρτι (ναι, γίνονται και πάρτι μετά τον φόνο) και διαβάζω αναλυτικά, δύο σελίδες σχεδόν, πώς το κατάφερε. Βαρετό και με αχρείαστες επαναλήψεις. I loved THE SATURDAY NIGHT GHOST CLUB so much. I read it last year and am grateful to @penguinbooks for the complimentary copy. Jake Baker is an awkward twelve year old with no friends and too many bullies. He spends most of his free time with his Uncle C who owns a novelty shop specializing in the occult in the 1980's town of Niagra Falls. That summer Jake will befriend the new kids to town and even though he suspects they will become his tormentors as soon as school starts, he enjoys welcoming the siblings into his Saturday Night Ghost Club. Craig Davidson is an amazing storyteller. THE SATURDAY NIGHT GHOST CLUB is a fun and emotional coming-of-age story that was simultaneously thrilling and thought provoking. Set in an era, when kids still roamed the streets on bicycles and came home only for dinner, the book allows the young characters to be vulnerable and adventurous with freedom to roam. It was a great read to quell the hole after I finished watching Stranger Things 3. The novel is short but so packed with skilled storytelling. And while it sets up as many coming-of-age stories, Jake, Billy and Dove are unique characters richly developed and bursting with adolescence and the coming adulthood. R E V I E W The Handmaid’s Tale - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Where to begin with this book. I originally read The Handmaid’s Tale back in college (maybe around 2012) for a feminist literature course I’d taken. Then, when the Hulu series came out, I watched it & enjoyed it (as much as one can enjoy something dealing with this type of content, obviously). I decided to reread the book because having read it so long ago, and in college when I typically read things quickly simply to get through them and move on to the next thing I had to do, I felt like I needed to reread it through a more mature lens to fully appreciate it. I loved this book. I have such an appreciation for this world Margaret Atwood has created, and the harrowing echoes of the current political climate. One cannot read this story and not think of our current state of affairs in the US. My only two complaints are a) that it’s not longer, that we don’t get more. Because that’s what I’m left wanting. And b) there are definitely times where I just want June to get to the point or stop meandering on about things and get back to the story. Not many times, but a few, if I’m being totally honest. I feel there’s not much to say about this story that hasn’t already been said, somewhere, but it was absolutely worth the re-read for me. It is not as extraordinary as “The Handmaid’s Tale” but still a great read as all Atwood’s books. It well explains how “totalitarianisms crumble from within as they fall to keep the promises that brought them to power”. However, the storyline is so revealing from the beginning to the end. There are some books like this that I wished I had read sooner. I have not read a book that was that much aligned with the way of my thinkings. Over the course of the years during my post secondary education, I usually have been asked why there is not any famous female Mathematicians in the past and present era. I tried to reason them with the facts that societal believes didn’t allow a woman to be a mathematician but I couldn’t articulate my thoughts to convince them. Now I can read chapter 3 of this book to them. I love Virginia Woolf’s sharp, serious, blunt,fierce tone in this work.
