I sent my darling Rokurokubi to a trusted collector last week. I didn’t have much time with her and often felt like she wasn’t really mine. She was often a problem to solve and I felt like I spent more time thinking about how to fix her than anything else... She never made it onto the shop site! As soon as @lizziegreeneyes saw her and said she wanted her, I knew it was the right fit. I knew where Rokurokubi was supposed to be. And now she’s floating in her custom-made frame on over to her new home in the USA where she will float in a loving home along with Notorious Almighty (RBG). LEATHER & LARK ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ARC REVIEW After Butcher & the Black Bird I anticipated that perhaps L&L might not live up to the expectations id built in my head. But I’m happy to say it lived up to them and then some. After the glimpse and teaser we had of Lark and Lachlan’s Marriage reveal in B&B we get their full story. It was funny, light and dark at the same time. It was hard to take the dark seriously when sprinkled with humour and light and I absolutely loved that about it. I enjoyed the plot and the spice and let me tell you it was a sloooooow burn, but the wait was worth it. But I’d be doing myself and my enjoyment of the book a disservice if I didn’t mention how much I absolutely loved Ethel. Dear She's a Killer, I cannot believe the directions that you took. At every plot point, I thought you were going one way, and you took me by surprise. While there were parts that felt less than realistic (a 15 year old super assassin???), you made it almost feel plausible. I am not even sure what genre you would fall into. A pre-dystopian world, an unlikable main character, and assassination plots do not seem like they should be in the same story, but you made this jumble of disconnected pieces work together to pull me in.

In the midst of a climate crisis, her New Zealand town has broken down between the haves (“wealthugees”) and the have nots (locals) with Alice finding herself and her only real life friend at odds. When she meets a man and his teenage daughter (a real genius, but filled with cold calculating ambition) things take a turn. This is a bit of a rollercoaster with the beginning creeping along very slowly and the back third going completely off the rails. #ShesAKiller by Kirsten McDougall Genre: #Dystopian #Satire Rating: ★★★.¾ A dystopian cli-fi satire that is wacky in myriad ways. If you go in with the right expectations, you might enjoy the book. I felt like I would hate this book until about the one-third mark, it was so amorphous until then. But once the story threads started coming together, I began to enjoy it better. Definitely recommended, but to only a specific set of readers. This is a very intelligent novel that might be a tad too esoteric for typical dystopian fiction fans. But if you are fond of satire or dark humour, this ought to be on your reading list. It is a go-with-the-flow kind of story, so don’t overthink; just enjoy the ride. This is promoted as a “satirical dystopian cli-fi thriller”, but it is more like a ‘literary thriller’, so you will be on a slowburn journey to the thrills. Not for those who want believable plots or likeable characters or clean content or fast-paced writing or happy stories. This one was an absolute killer of a book... (For those of you that didn't cringe at thar horrendously executed pun and scroll on, thanks, here is my actual review.) She's a Killer is a hilarious romp of a story, set in a futuristic New Zealand. The world is going to pot, and NZ is the closest thing to safe haven, leading to an influx of 'wealthugees' into the island. The novel follows protagonist Alice as her world is turned upside down when she meets Pablo, and by extension, his daughter Erika. Alice, despite her 159 IQ, lives a simple life, maintaining a terrible job to keep enough money coming in to support her fairly low-maintenance lifestyle. Erika's arrival in her life is just the beginning of a tumultuous adventure for Alice, involving murder, lies, and dangerous behaviour. A wild ride that she never asked for but can't seem to escape, Alice recounts the story in a very comedic and sarcastic manner. The writing is very witty, and the characters are really realistic - I found myself sincerely disliking Alice for most of the novel, which is one of my favourite things about it. Highly recommend if you're into the cli-fi genre, although I did feel that it was missing a little more background info about the state of the climate crisis and the movement that Erika is a part of. Generally I am not a fan of dystopian novels but I really enjoyed reading 'She's A Killer' by Kirsten McDougall. It is funny and entertaining but also dark at times, all in all very cleverly written. The main character Alice is a 37 year old who has a very high IQ and an invisible friend. When Alice meets the wealthugee Pablo the storyline turns into a rollercoaster. I’m not sure how to even start pulling my thoughts together about She’s a Killer. To call it an “enjoyable” read feels false, as it made me feel intensely uncomfortable at points (definitely its purpose), but I was utterly riveted throughout. The blurb calls this a “satirical dystopian cli-fi thriller”, and the book melds all of these separate aspects together well - there’s a brilliant dark humour throughout, so the reader is chuckling whilst being appalled. More world-building would be thoroughly out of character for our protagonist and POV-character Alice, but as someone who is primarily a scifi reader I still found the little snippets of information about this world so close to our own really intriguing. I’m keen to read more from Kirsten McDougall, and I think She’s a Killer will stay with me for quite a while. A U D I O B O O K R E V I E W 🎧🎵 Title: She’s A Killer Author: Kirsten McDougall Genre: Thriller, Fiction, Mystery Story: ⭐⭐💫 Audio: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is a little different to what I would normally read but after @Bolindaaudio so kindly gave me access to the new audiobook of ‘She’s A Killer’, I couldn’t resist. I must admit, the story itself is not one that I enjoyed. I felt like there were far too many storylines pulling for my attention which then tended to weaken the message I believe this book was trying to achieve. There were a lot of interesting points about a world where the change in climate has made countries inhabitable and how this would affect the everyday person and influence immigration. Personally the sections of the book that spoke to economic challenges and resource availability is what I enjoyed most. While this thriller wasn’t really for me, I was pleased with the quality of the audio and loved the voice actor Eva Seymour. The way this book was delivered is what had me hooked. While I may stay away from these types of stories in the future, I will come back to @Bolindaaudio audiobooks again and again! Book review: She’s a Killer by Kirsten McDougall This was another book that got caught in my first trimester reading slump but it was worth getting back into now that I can read again. There seems to be a run of stories themed around women who are sick of inaction by police or politicians, taking things into their own hands and I am here for it. In this case our protagonist, Alice, is in the near future in New Zealand where climate change is causing mass migration and she’s pretty despondent about everything until she meets Erika who isn’t content to do nothing about the worsening crisis. She’s a Killer by Kirsten McDougall borrowed from @hertsreads and @gallicbooks were also super kind in sending me a finished copy 🥹 This was an incredibly refreshing read! I cannot remember reading anything quite like this in quite a while. Alice is 37, has an imaginary friend, Simp (OMG I love Simp) who lives in the same house as her mother, has an IQ just one point short of a genius and is in a dead end job. She is resentful, blunt and her inner monologues are hilarious at times! She has one friend, Amy, who is married to a successful man. Their lives are polar opposite. We learn a lot about Alice and why she’s ended up where she has. This is set against a world in the not too far future where climate change has had a drastic impact on the world and where the rich (known as the Wealthugees) can buy their way out of any situation. Alice meets Pablo, a wealthugees, she is very much attracted to him. At this point we meet his teenage daughter and this is where things spiral out of control. I cannot not say anymore as it’ll spoil the plot but what I will say was this was a funny, heartfelt and pretty original tale. I’d recommend it! 🍍 I love it when books have unusual covers, and this one definitely piqued my interest! ‘She’s A Killer’ by Kristen McDougall is a bizarre, darkly funny, unexpected apocalyptic satire full of climate-related cautionary tales, unlikeable characters, bemusing situations and an unreliable narrator. I laughed, I gasped and I thought a lot about the morality of “wealthugees” (rich individuals from near-destroyed countries across the world seeking refuge in New Zealand). I’d recommend this one but can only give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (rounded up) as I think I’d have preferred more exploration of the world Kirsten McDougall created (or predicted?!) gifted/ ARC book review: She’s A Killer by Kirsten McDougall . this was a middle of the road novel for me. i liked the setting of a not too distant future with “wealthugees” (wealthy refugees) buying their way into New Zealand to escape the climate disasters in their own countries (a future that is entirely believable). i thought the two main characters, Alice and Erika, were fascinating- intelligent, unlikeable and complex. but for me there was something off with the pacing of the novel. . the first two thirds of the book meandered with lots of irrelevant side plots that i think were intended to build up the characters but i found them a bit unnecessary and disjointed. for me the last third was really exciting and i enjoyed it. . a big thank you to @ingrampublisherservicesintl for sending me this advanced reader copy of She’s A Killer in exchange for my honest review. out now! . #shesakiller #kirstenmcdougall #gallic #bookreview #advancereadercopy #arcreview
