I recently took a deep dive into the Shades of Magic series and was pleasantly surprised to find these accompanying graphic novels at a local Friends of the Library. The B&N exclusives also have BTS art and story creation info that was really cool to see. I liked that in Red London, the man in power wasn't necessarily a villain and these graphic novels were a nice insight to his character development! Do you read accompanying stories to a series you enjoy?

After following Kell and Lila for three books and also enjoying the graphic novel about a young Maxim Maresh, #thefragilethreadsofpower allowed us to visit the four Londons once more. V. E. Schwab grants us some amazing new characters with whom we go on thrilling adventures. Of course, we also get to reunite with our former protagonists and enjoy their older beings. Especially witnessing Rhy and Alucard's small family brought much joy to this reading experience. Moreover, the author's got quite some plot twists up her sleeve and I loved every one of them. I found The Steel Prince graphic novels at my local library (which has gotten me to reread the Shades of Magic series rn and I may have bought The Fragile Threads of Power too since I’m on a kick). I really enjoyed the graphic novels! The art was good and I especially loved the third one since it delved more into the external problems of Arnes. At times things felt too fast paced, but that’s the nature of a limited graphic novel—there’s just never enough of it 🤷♀️. Schwab I am 10% into The Fragile Threads of Power, and immediately, I feel thrown back to 2017 when I had just finished A Conjuring of Light. Returning to a world that was part of the foundation for my love of adult fantasy books is just indescribable. I feel spoiled, honestly. I’m loving the new characters (Tesali! Kosika!) and the changed parts of Red London. I’m loving the references to the Shades of Magic trilogy that only a reader of those books could spot. I’m loving everything, which is no surprise to anyone. 🤭 I’ve only seen Alucard and a flashback of Rhy so far, but the next chapter does start with “Delilah Bard,” so I don’t think I have to wait much longer to see my old favs.

Sent away by his father to prove himself, Maxim finds himself in the port city of Verose, training with the army to prove himself a capable leader and help quash the many uprisings of criminals and rebels in the city. I loved the banter between Maxim and Isra. Both are extremely likeable characters and I really enjoyed reading about how they met and the foes they faced together. “Princes don’t sulk Isra, they contemplate.” These 3 short graphic novels are the perfect companion series to Shades of Magic series, giving us an insight into Maxim’s character and context for this interactions with Kel in the books. Schwab at Bookcon all about my nerves for Our Dark Duet—which was releasing in the next few weeks at the time—I brought two books with me to be signed and personalized: A Darker Shade of Magic and Vicious. A Darker Shade of Magic will always hold the key to my heart when it comes to V’s books. It introduced me to their writing and characters, and it opened my eyes to adult fantasy. It helped me to realize I can read this genre, and I do really love it. I look back at the 17 year old version of myself who waited in V’s signing line at Bookcon, and I smile because she didn’t know at the time that she’d be reading more incredible books by V, and in particular, she’d get to review the first book in the Threads of Power series. This series was merely hinted at back then, an idea in the making and what felt like an eternity away, but now it’s real and in 23 year old me’s hands. ✨BOOK THOUGHTS✨ “There’s always a line between truth and legend.” The Steel Prince - V.E Schwab These three graphic novels are short and fast-paced and provide great insight into Maxim Maresh’s life before he became a king and a father. I was always very conflicted about Maxim in the Shades of Magic books so I definitely enjoyed seeing a story from his perspective. Each graphic novel has its own storyline and its own villain to defeat, but they should absolutely be read in order as there is a deeper thread running throughout. I would have loved if these were a book or at least slightly longer graphic novels. Then I’d be able to dive deeper into this interesting character’s past. Ultimately, I think any Shades of Magic fan will find something to enjoy in these graphic novels. Have you read these? Step back in time of the Shades of Magic world as we see Maxim Maresh, in his 20s, not yet a king but a prince fixated on the four Londons and finding any Antari who can move between these Londons. When his father sends him to Verose, a port city where there is danger and trouble and the infamous pirate queen, Arisa pulls into port and rules. The Shades of Magic series is a very complex and highly detailed world and I absolutely loved learning more about the magic system and the Londons and wanted to see this explored more in a graphic format. I loved how Andrea Olimpieri bought this world to life with their illustrations. They also illustrated the Dishonored novels and their style really lends well to a steampunk-esque world that fits in perfectly for Red London. The tones tend to be on the darker side with the flashes of bright colour being the magic various people have in the series. Certain people develop an affinity for fire, earth, water, metal and bone. Seeing these bought to life was honestly magical, with each affinity having a different colour. Maxim and his affinity for metal is golden and bright, and bone is purple and it made the fight scenes so much more intriguing to view! Learning more about Maxim was so cool too. In the Darker Shades of Magic, he is older, a father and has ruled for a long time and is very strict and stern with his children. Seeing him in his 20s was a very stark contrast and he is very brash and impulsive but you see the qualities of a yet to be ruler. Donc ce fut un plaisir de replonger dans cet univers que j'aime tant. En fait si vous êtes déjà fans de Shades of Magic, The Steel Prince est un bonus sympathique. Par contre je ne pense pas qu'il y ait vraiment un intérêt à lire ces comics si vous n'avez pas déjà lu Shades of Magic. L'histoire est assez sympa et bourrée d'action. Certains personnages ont un certain charisme surtout les personnages féminins qui sont vraiment cools. Par contre je trouve que l'histoire est parfois desservie par le dessin. Les dessins trop sombres et brouillons rendant certaines scènes illisibles. J'avais du mal à m'y retrouver dans les scènes d'action, c'est dommage. sept 20 ; 📚How do you choose your next read? Do you follow a preset TBR? Are you a mood reader? Do you just randomly choose the next book off your shelf? So shame on me as a VE Schwab fan about the fact that I still haven't finished these graphic novels. I actually bought them specifically because I thought I could read them between some of the longer novels as something short and easy to consume. And since then I have only read the first issue. Actually I will tell you what I have been doing recently, is instead of picking up this I have actually been reading romances between my fantasies. I guess they give me the same effect as reading graphic novels would have been which is something short light and not as dense. The long weekend draws to a close. I read 3 books, had a lovely day with @saucydryad and @donskilcoyne and others who I hadn’t seen a long while. A much needed day of beer @drownedlandsbrewery great conversations, an idea for my next trip. Also, some yummy meals at home #pittingerfarm ground beef with blue cheese, on arugula, roasted @flocktownfarm blue potatoes, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Along side a wonderful glass of @lamoreauxwine #pinotnoir (of which I just bought a case, because I LOVE the this wine. Tell me your favorite graphic novels and WEBTOONS! I don’t read a lot of WEBTOONS personally because I’m very picky with the art style, but I’m slowly adding more and more stories to my lil’ collection. I went through a huge graphic novel phase back in 2018 or 2019, and recently, I’ve wanted to dive back into them. Jako ogromna fanka Mroczniejszego Odcienia Magii kiedy tylko dowiedziałam się, że istnieją komiksy związane z trylogią wiedziałam, że na pewno będą moje. Trafiłam na cudowne wydanie @titancomics ubrane w box z dodatkami w postaci artów. Kocham po prostu kocham takie niespodzianki. Komiksy skupiają się na młodym księciu Maxime przyszłym królu Czerwonego Londynu (to on adoptuje Kell'a w Odcieniach Magii). Okazuje się że w młodości z Maxima było niezłe ziółko i dokazywał jak się patrzy. Świetnie wypadła ta historia w formie komiksu, jestem oczarowana i chcę wiecej. Schwab. 1️⃣0️⃣ Vol. 1: The Steel Prince 🌟🌟🌟✨ After only getting a snippet of King Maxim's backstory in de Shades of Magic-trilogy, we get to explore it further in these comics. This first volume tells the story of when he was just sent to Verose.🧐 It is so much fun to dive back into this world.😄 It took me a while to get used to the magic system again, but after a while I was digging it.😁 I do have to say that I found the story and panels quite confusing sometimes. I never really knew what exactly was happening in the fight scenes...😅 But you know, they do look cool.😃 I would recommend reading these comics after you have read the Shades of Magic trilogy.😉 1️⃣1️⃣ Vol. 2: Night of Knives 🌟🌟🌟✨ Maxim will have to prove himself (again) among the soldiers who only see him as a prince.😎 We once again have very cool fight scenes where I was quite lost a lot of the time.😬 I am not incredibly invested in Maxim's story, but I like the world so much, that I don't care who it is about.😄 I do think I am missing most of the references, because it has been a hot minute since I have read the trilogy.😅 But that is okay, I am still enjoying the ride. And now the last one!🤩 1️⃣2️⃣ Vol. 3: The Rebel Army 🌟🌟🌟✨ The final challenge on Prince Maxim's path is one with a rebel army led by someone we have encountered before in these comics.🤔 The set up was too long in my opinion in comparison to the pay-off.😔 These last battles only last only a fraction of the volumes, which make them look too easy. Graphic Novel/Comic Book Reviews ~*~ Schwab’s ‘Shades of Magic’ and ‘Villains’ series are some of my all-time favourite books. And, while Graphic-Novels/Comics can be really hit or miss for me, I loved returning to these worlds of science and magic. ExtraOrdinary (Villains 1.5) 4⭐️:I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of this world of science and powers but I felt like the new characters weren’t given much space due to how many pages recapped what happened in the first book. I get that it’s so new readers aren’t confused but as someone who knew the story, I found myself skimming those pages. However, I really enjoyed the short story “Warm Up” at the back of the book. The Steel Prince Vol 1 (Shades of Magic 0.5) 4⭐️: Schwab just creates fantastic worlds and I’m a sucker for royalty and magic, especially magical royalty fighting pirates with powers. The story is great and the characters are compelling! The art style lends to the gritty atmosphere too, even if I still prefer black-and-white or two-tone over full-colour comics. DARK (Shades of magic # 3) di V. E. Schwab 💧🔥🌱☁️ 📚 E chiudiamo in bellezza con il terzo capitolo di questa trilogia. È stata indubbiamente una bella storia, con dei gran bei personaggi e una fantastica ambientazione. Nelle precedenti recensioni non ho minimamente commentato la prosa dell'autrice, che personalmente adoro ma di cui molti lamentano l'iniziale lentezza 🧗♂️ La storia riprende immediatamente dopo il finale di Legend, e si svolge quasi interamente in un'unica Londra (con mio sommo dispiacere). Grande pecca del libro è la sua prevedibilità, che è persino più evidente rispetto ai capitoli precedenti. Questo al punto che avevo già una buona idea di come sarebbe finito già prima di metà libro (anche grazie alla consapevolezza che V. E. Schwab è allergica ai lieti fini, e preferisce finali dolceamari). Ciononostante, ho finito tutte le 600+ pagine nel giro di letteralmente due giorni. E lo rifarei senza problemi! 🪁 Beh, che dire, la trilogia di Shades of magic è stata un'avventura. E per fortuna mia e degli altri appassionati della serie, non finisce qui. Uusien kirjojen tulee olla joko viiden tähden lukukokemuksia jo entuudestaan tai minulla täytyy olla todella vahva syy ostaa ne muusta syystä. Tiukka linjaus alkoi, kun hyllytila alkoi loppua, mutta ajan edetessä olen huomannut, että pidän kirjahyllystäni enemmän, kun sieltä löytyy vain lempikirjojani. Toki sieltä löytyy vielä lukemattomia ja 'ihan ok' -sarjaan kuuluvia kirjoja, mutta poistan näitä tasaisin väliajoin. ✨ Joulukuussa ostin käytettynä muutaman kirjan, tammikuussa en yhtään ja helmikuussa ostin nämä neljä ihanuutta. Sally Rooneyn Normaaleja ihmisiä oli tammikuun paras lukukokemus ja olen sitä jo täällä vähän väliä hehkuttanutkin. Kolme muuta on sarjakuvia ja ovat samaa kirjasarjaa. Sarja perustuu V. E. Schwabin Shades of Magic kirjasarjan erääseen sivuhenkilöön ja kun bongasin nämä @kirjojentytar stooreista, tilasin samoin tein kaikki omakseni. Shades of Magic on lempikirjasarjojani ja koska himmailin viimeisen osan ostamista, jäin ilman. En halunnut sitä tapahtuvan näiden osalta, vaikka tämä ei taida niin suosittu ollakaan. Näitä sarjakuvia säästelen keväälle, suunnittelen viikonloppua (ehkä pääsiäistä?), jolloin lukisin kaikki lukemattomat sarjakuvani. J'avais vraiment hâte de me replonger dans cet univers et même si j'ai bien aimé, je ne l'ai pas été plus que ça (contrairement au roman). Peut-être en raison du fait que ce soit un roman graphique (une première !) et je ne suis pas fan du graphisme notamment aux niveaux des traits des visages...🤔 Sinon, j'ai aimé découvrir la jeunesse rebelle du père de Rhy et Kell en tant que prince et soldat. L'ambiance est sombre, sympa et violente. La lecture est courte et rapide. Les actions s'enchaînent très vite. Piraterie, magie, épreuve, royauté, combats, rivalité, alliance. . Schwab, alors quand j’ai vu que Shades of Magic existait en comics je me suis dit que c’était peut-être le bon moyen de commencer à apprécier. Je suis assez mitigée sur le sujet, j’ai pas spécialement adoré mais j’ai pas détesté non plus. Pas trop fan des dessins, j’ai beaucoup aimé la colorisation.
