📖 Book Review - Book 14/80 📖 I finished listening to The Girl in the Eagle’s Talons by Karin Smirnoff on Monday. Gosh, I’m so conflicted about how to review this book, so I will do it in two parts: as a standalone book and as part of a series. As a standalone, I think this book is enjoyable to read. The characters are understood, and the storyline is suspenseful and pulls the reader in. Smirnoff does a great job not leaving any plot holes, and its ending makes sense. As part of the Millennium series? It was a huge letdown. As the books have continued from Larsson to Lagercrantz and now to Smirnoff, we’ve seen a decline in the books, in my opinion. When it switched to Lagercrantz, I was nervous about the transition, but it was seamless, and I could only tell the difference in a few bits. With Smirnoff, it was completely different. Lisbeth Salander’s character, which I have grown to love, was completely different. She went from this standoffish, mysterious young woman who prefers to work alone to a flirtatious, funny, involved character that completely goes against what we have known in the previous six books. It was like reading about a stranger. In addition, the book focuses a lot on love interests and the inner thoughts on relationships for Blomqvist and Salander. 📖 Book Review - Book 10/80 📖 Last week, I finished reading The Girl Who Lived Twice by David Lagercrantz. This novel is the 6th book in the Millennium series that began with books written by Stieg Larsson. Unfortunately, this was my least favorite book in the series. This novel follows two different stories, one about an old beggar found dead and the other about Lisbeth tracking down those who’ve wronged her. I found the story about the beggar to be sort of lackluster and dull compared to the airlines previously written by the two authors. However, I will admit that it is technically executed with no plot holes and questions left unanswered. The only satisfying part of this book is Lisbeth finally getting revenge on the remaining people who have made her life hell. Yet, it felt so anticlimactic; I expected so much more than the ending we had all anticipated. Book 5/? 2024 The Girl In The Eagles Talons I love Lisbeth Salander. They’re the only books I ever really get the hardback for, because I can’t wait for the paperback. I’m so pleased they’ve continued the series. This is a good one that somehow manages to show a softer side of Lisbeth, but she’s still a badass. The series were published posthumously after Larsson passed away in 2004. I thought there would be no more in the series. Recently, I found out that David Lagercrantz has continued the series, and I picked up The Girl in the Spider’s Web at @bookxcess . In Lagercrantz’s continuation, Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist unravel a gripping tale involving cybercrime, artificial intelligence, espionage, and government corruption. The technology in this fourth book has evolved too, moving from PDA (does anyone still remember this? 😆) to laptops and there are even mentions of Instagram. What captivated me most was Lisbeth’s character - a punk-looking, angst-ridden, and antisocial hacker. I always enjoy reading about strong female characters. 🐉🐉🐉🐉 / 5 Complex characters, intriguing plot, family secrets, expert scene setting, locked room puzzle (or in this case, locked island!), missing persons mystery, moral dilemmas, twists and slow reveals galore - this modern classic has it all. I find that most mystery thrillers tend to be more plot driven and character development suffers at the expense of story and execution. But in TGWTDT the characters, both main and supporting, are so vivid and well drawn. Lisbeth and Mikael are set up extremely well and I can’t wait to see where their story goes in the next novel. My only negative is the slow start and set up. It takes a long time for Lisbeth and Mikael to even meet - almost half way in. I began to get a little impatient. With great writing and special effects plus Godzilla is a menacing force since he is the villain and pure evil in this movie and I love it! This book was kind of a let down. The Girl in the Eagle’s Talons is the seventh book in the Millennium series, this time being written by Karin Smirnoff. This is the third time this series has had an author change, and I think this one was the most jarring. Lisbeth as a character has just lost her edge, and the way she was written was underwhelming. The same goes for other returning characters. I honestly don’t think this series needed to be continued — it was fine ending with the sixth book. Blomkvist is headed to his daughter’s wedding, while Salander is in the area due to a family connection. There’s a lot of depth and background going on in the story, which helped me remember the characters better than if the book had been more sparse. This book brought me back to Lisbeth Salander - I remember reading the three books by Stieg Larsson, and I enjoyed those back when I read them a long time ago. However, I did not read any of the books by David Lagercrantz, and I wonder if that impacted how I felt about this book by Karin Smirnoff, in addition to a large gap (many years!) from reading the Stieg Larsson books to this one. 📚📚Review📚📚 Never have I eagerly awaited a book and been so disappointed 😫 I am a massive Lisbeth Salander fan and this book falls incredibly short. I found it disjointed and hard to follow in places. It is painfully slow. It takes almost 250 pages for anything to happen and it was almost a DNF for me. And once things did start to happen they were wrapped up quickly, some without explanation because the book needed to end. 🦇millennium series🦇 During my insta hiatus I decided to finally get around to finishing some series. After getting caught up on Lars Kepler (my favorite nordic noir to date) I figured it was time to read the books that introduced me to the genre. I'd seen the movies and loved how dark and morally grey Lisbeth is so I was super excited starting out. My feelings about Lisbeth remained the same, she's definitely the best part of the series, but everything else felt a little lackluster. Very complicated stories with a million different characters and endings that didn't give the payoff I needed to make the read worth it. Some were definitely better than others. The first and third I think we're most successful but I don't think I'll read any of them again. What's the last series you've read? Do you like reading the books all at once or spread them out?

Lisbeth Salander is back! The latest in The Millennium Series has been released- The Girl in the Eagle’s Talons and this novel has been written by Swedish writer Karin Smirnoff. She is the third author to write in this series- the original was Steig Larsson followed by David Lagercrantz. She has agreed to write 2 more books in this series of contemporary Swedish crime fiction. This series - starting with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was the first Scandinavian crime fiction I read and I’ve not missed a book in the series- I have read the original 3 by Steig Larsson twice because they are so good! Suspenseful, action packed with unforgettable characters making for a great read. I think the author did a good job of picking up the story and running with it. There were a few familiar characters and a few new ones and they meshed well. This story centered around different families and I liked the way that was brought in. And the relationships we’ve seen in the past between some people were different this time around. In other words, a lot of unexpected things were happening! Which made for more excitement and a better page turning reading experience! There was an important environmental element at play that had a lot to do with the main storyline. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one! 40/2023 The Girl in the Eagle's Talons by Karin Smirnoff The book continues the acclaimed Millenium series by Stieg Larsson authored by Karin Smirnoff. I loved the first three books of the series written by Larsson and was looking forward to a riveting read. The story was based on an interesting premise of Government corruption in the allocation of natural resources, climate change and corporate manipulation and resistance. It was nice to once again meet all the familiar characters - Lisbeth Salander, Mikael Blomkvist leading the retinue. However, the book was somewhat lacking in the pace and twisty-turns of the original. I do not know if something was lost in translation. I did manage to read it to the end but it was not a mind-blowing experience. The book is supposedly the first in a series. Henrik ise, zengin ancak karmaşık bir ailenin en büyüğü, Mikael’ı aile tarihini yazması için işe alıyor. Ancak bu sadece bir kılıf. Gerçek işi, üzerinden yıllar geçmiş bir ölümü araştırmak. First day of vacation and picked up an unexpected read for myself… book 6 of the Millenium Series: The Girl Who Lived Twice. I’m a fan of the original trilogy by Stieg Larsson and his characters, but have had a harder time with David Lagercrantz’s continuation. I read throigh his first two but never made it to his third. Recently I saw that there was a new book (7th) by a female author and I want to give it a go, so it was time to once again pick up the Millenium Series. I’m enjoying the sixth more than I thought, but I miss Larsson’s writing style still. Looking forward to when I get to read the newest installment! With Tropical Storm Idalia blowing through on the first day, it’s been nice to pick up a new book and cozy up to read. A brilliant and complex dose of scandi noir which I thoroughly enjoyed 🙌 So I hadn’t read any of these since The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and must admit it was hard to remember and keep track of all the characters and their history because of that. I’d also say it’s a fairly high brow crime novel, so you do have to put your thinking cap on, but I understood enough to be able to enjoy and appreciate it! Lots of brilliant, fearless female characters, that cold, atmospheric setting and a plot that goes into the political, environmental and just plain sadistic = a compelling read! The wait is over She’s back! LISBETH SALANDER is back! Authored by #KarinSmirnoff translated by #SarahDeath #TheGirlintheEaglesTalons I’m not going to give away anything of the plot, Suffice to say it’s a good one! Devotees of the series will not be disappointed. And I think it works as a standalone for people who have not read the previous books. Of course it helps to know Liebeth’s history because you can understand her better. But I found we have a more mature, maybe even slightly mellower Liesbeth, but only slightly though! She’s still kicking butt like nobody else. And we have an older Mikael Blomkvist dealing with the end of Millenium magazine as a print publication. Some other characters make a return, but I’m not going to divulge that. The action takes place in a northern Sweden, and we learn that Liesbeth has a niece whose mother has vanished without trace. The character of Svala is a new one but she is so clearly Liesbeth’s niece it made me chuckle. The dynamic between the two is wonderful. Karen Smirnoff has done such a good job. The ghost of Stieg Larsson pervades the whole narrative. He’s even mentioned at one point. I felt him more keenly here than I did in David Lagercrantz’s books. It’s a complex plot that looks at conspiracies, greed and brutality. Larsson examined attitudes and violence towards women. Ms Smirnoff has taken up the mantle and continued this thematic exploration. A full review can be found on my blog. The Girl in the Eagle's Talons relies on a lot of coincidence to set up the story: Blomkist and Salander both find themselves in the north, in the small town of Gasskas, Mikael for his daughter's wedding, while Salander has come to meet her 13 year old niece, Svala, who faces being put into the foster system if Salander won't take her in after her mother disappears. The Branco group, with connections to the Svavelsjö MC, wants to put a wind farm in the Gasskas area and will use any means necessary to get their way on the deal with the city, including threatening Mikael's daughter and grandson and Svala's mother. The book starts off slow, setting up all the threads that will interconnect in the story, and there are almost too many threads to keep track of at times, especially while also trying to remember who characters are from previous books. By the midpoint of the book, however, the action starts to ramp up. Blomkist and Salander are essential to the story but there seems to be more focus on Svala, perhaps establishing her as Salander's heir-apparent. A solid thriller, although not on par with the original books in the series.
I just finished "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and since it has been a while since I posted a mini review, here’s one for Millennium’s gripping sequel. I really enjoyed diving back into the world of Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. The narrative's ability to maintain a sense of intrigue kept me hooked. But it did feel a tad exhausting at times 😅 It was Lisbeth that kept me going tho. She continues to amaze me with her intelligence and resilience. The exploration of her past added so much depth to her character. I want to see a nice, good ending for her and I hope the last book won’t disappoint me. “There are no innocents. There are, however, different degrees of responsibility." This quote struck a chord with me because of how simple and true it is. It's the choices we make that define our path, and these choices affect everything around us. We can’t point a finger at a single hero or a single villain. In both fiction and reality, everyone has a role to play. 3.5⭐️ out of 5 The Girl in the Eagle's Talons is the 7th book in the Millennium series, aka The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. Stieg Larsson created the series and wrote the first three books but sadly passed away before they were published. David Lagercrantz was hired by the publisher to write the next three books. This book is Karin Smirnoff's first crack at continuing the story of Lisbeth Salander. In my opinion, book 7 is comparable to the fourth and fifth books written by David Lagercrantz. By that I mean, there's enough going on to hold my interest and a decent attempt is made to remain true to foundation of the characters. They don't hold a candle to that original trilogy but that's next to an impossible task in my view. Karin Smirnoff did a good job moving things in a bit of a new direction and that has left me reenergized at what's to come with future books.
