Hi 👋 I believe everyone has at least one series that they started and never got around to finish it, even one you only have to read the last book. It took my 5 years to take the courage and finish Throne of Glass. Between moving to another country and just life happening in general, I also pushed it because I didn't want to say goodbye. This is not the case with these 4 series. Happy release day A DROP OF VENOM! 🐍❤️🔥 What a powerful powerful story. How powerful it is to read a story in which the heroine does not ever shy away from her power. In which we see her laugh in the face of those that paint her as a monster, knowing that it was them who caused her pain. In which we see her find everything she needs within herself, and still find joy and hope in connection. In which we see her survive in spite of it all. Manisha’s journey is so very impactful. The author does not shy away from the mature subject matter in this Medusa retelling, and though there were moments that left me sick to my stomach, I felt they were critical to the story (please read the trigger warnings before!). The care with which Patel portrayed and handled Manisha’s trauma is very moving. A striking, unapologetic, and epic tale that forces you to question “what it truly means to be a monster”. Hello friends 🧡, a new mini-review: The Trouble with Hating You 🪷 - Sajni Patel 336 pages - Epub [Plot] Liya is independent, strong, has a degree in biomechanic engineering 🧪, loyal friends and lives alone, and this is disturbing. Her parents, like good traditional Indians, try to arrange a dinner with Jay, a lawyer, with the aim of getting them married. But Liya refuses and runs away, except that she couldn't imagine finding herself face to face with the one she doesn't want to meet AT HER WORK. From then on, they can't avoid each other, at work or at mandir. They end up getting closer, but each of them has past wounds and the rumors that run around Liya are more and more present. Will they be able to ignore all this 🥵? [Review] I really liked this book and discovering this culture 💐. The author managed to introduce the characters and to share their resentment with us. The alternation of the POV of the characters is really appreciable for that. The two protagonists are attached, Liya fights for what she believes in and aspires for her life while Jay is gentle, understanding and takes her defense. I also appreciated that the author addresses serious themes as well and makes us think about the current position of women 💃 within traditions: aggression, objectification, domination, are all themes that we find and which are put admirably forward. I read Isha, Unscripted on a trip a few weeks ago (thanks @netgalley for the e-ARC!) and I had to run out and get my own copy on pub day this week! Isha, Unscripted is funny and silly, but also sweet and real. Isha is an Indian American Texas girl on the verge of giving up her dreams of becoming a screenwriter. She has moved back in with her parents in her late 20s, and feels like a massive failure - and the family/cultural pressures don’t help. Along with her closest cousin, she works on figuring out her life, as as she gets into hijinks, has some drunken clown encounters, and chases Matthew McConaughey’s help with her goals! This was a super quick read - if you’re looking for an easy, silly read with a substantial backbone, I’d go for this one! #SMGlibrary

The writing was beautiful, but a little hard to get used to (since English isn’t my first language). And around that mark, I found that still nothing thrilling/exciting had happened. It's been a long time since I finished reading #thetroublewithhatingyou by @sajnipatelbooks. I was flipping through something else which was over-hyped and I couldn't finish that book! Then on one Friday evening, I had this yearning to read a charming book and then @pri.reading recommended this one, and I ended up loving the book with "hate" in its title!! First of all, this book is an enemy to lovers kind of a story between Liya and Jay. Both Indians settled abroad. I liked the way their love evolved. The way the struggles and ideological conflicts of the characters are brought out is so good. You won't notice but you can't avoid it. It was so brilliant I loved Liya, she was not at all charming, even grumpy sometimes but how can't she be like that? She is an educated successful woman living in Houston and yet she was a failure in her community or even before her dad. Reason??? U have to impress a list of long relatives and nosy neighbors. I could relate to the struggles she was facing because I had faced them. I could understand her losing her mind speaking up and then being stamped as arrogant! Now to handle such a lady normally we see a hero who makes her realize the value of family and traditions, esp if the story is set abroad (courtesy of Bollywood romcom books) But our hero, Jay is nothing like that he loves Liya for what she stands for, he never made her change any of her decisions or prompted her or did any of the cliche acts. He just stood by her. I loved that very much. That doesn't mean he was a Yes man either he respected her when she said something worth it. That's it!!!! It’s hard for me to come across Indian main characters in a book, especially a romance book. I’m currently in the middle of the book and enjoying it, but we’ll see. ⭐️⭐️ Liya is reticent about making herself vulnerable. She runs away when she realises her parents have ambushed her with a prospective groom, only to turn up the next day to find the man she ran out on is her new coworker. Some spoilers ahead ‼️ There was so much potential in the book! I love that one of the main themes was to talk about the enormous amount of power old Indian uncles hold in the community. As someone who grew up as an immigrant Indian, those issues were very relatable. But I was so disappointed at how the author handled said issues. The book built on Liya’s character as this amazing woman in stem who doesn’t need a man. And you know what? I’m all for it. But I HATE it when authors try to create a strong female lead only to have the male character do most of the work. I cannot tell you how many times this book emphasises that Liya is no damsel in distress. Except, that is exactly what the author plays into. Jay ends up being the one who makes the ultimate statement and stands up to the community. Moreover, Liya’s character was completely insufferable. Trauma doesn’t permit dickhead behaviour. Her disrespect towards well-meaning people and lack of empathy was astounding. The only thing that made this book mildly readable was the male lead.

I could resonate with her past and felt deeply for her. I loved Jay’s character. He doesn’t believe in everything he hears but what he experiences. He cooks, he cares for his family, he takes a stand for a woman he hardly knows. His character depicts his good upbringing. He is patient and a good friend. A total package. NO TOXICITY. I wonder whether guys like Jay really exists in reality. Even if they do exist, it’s rare. I love his emotional maturity and caring side as well as his bold side. And how can I forget Jay’s family! Oh my god!! Jay’s mom, brother and sister-in-law. Just love them 😩❤️❤️ Liya’s father is someone I despised. How can a father be like that?? Unbelievable!!! Liya’s friends are so loving, supportive, understanding and comforting.🖤 Loved reading the poc characters. Do check out this book if you haven’t already. I loved the tension between the characters as they see each other again after so long and try to deal with all the emotions that it brings up. Their break up was quite abrupt and a lot was left unexplained and I enjoyed seeing how that played into their current relationship. I think my favorite aspect about this book is the demonstration of intergenerational conflict between Preeti and her friends and their parents & relatives within the desi community. Sajni Patel does a really good job in her books of highlighting the issues that older generations in the desi community bring and inflict on their children. I loved how one of the themes of this book and the series overall is how Preeti and her friends vow to make a positive difference as the younger generations of the desi community and ensure that no one ever is mistreated in any way in generations to come. Also, as a brown med student myself, who also struggles with anxiety and mental illness alongside cultural and familial pressures, this book had me sobbing. I knew it was going to be such a good book but equally destroy me when I was sobbing in chapter 5 and 6. Like super EARLY in the book. First Love, Take Two By Sajni Patel The first and only time I got a 30% on an exam in college, I wasn’t worried. My professor in college strongly believed in second chances since he got a second chance at love when he remarried so he offered retakes of his exams. I still don’t believe in second chances but I wholeheartedly supported my professor’s belief of the concept. To answer the question of whether Preeti, our heroine, would give her first love a second chance, duh, of course she does. But the initial conflict is one I’m intimately familiar with. Making tough decisions and dealing with the consequences myself in order to protect my parents? Been there, done that. It’s a very isolating process and the knowledge that you can't seek support from your parents especially about relationships is a tough reality. You can always hope that your parents will come around and understand that their expectations might not match up to what their children want, but there’s no guarantee. It's still nice to read about it working out. Interracial dating is complicated. Anyone who says you should just go for it and figure out along the way is right but anyone who says you should really evaluate what you’re getting yourself into it also right. I was introduced to her works through volunteering for @booktalkevent this summer, and was assigned to moderate her panel! I wanted to make sure I had read a book by each of the panelists, so I ordered a copy of her YA novel, “The Knockout”. I really enjoyed the big themes presented in this story. Mental Health: Preeti has anxiety, and this plays a major part in some of the decisions she makes in the story. Part of the story resonated with me when she is at work and is constantly casting doubt on her self and her abilities. I personally have been there. I loved how supportive and encouraging Daniel was for her to seek help. Race, racism and interracial relationships: Preeti is Indian and Daniel is black. At the end of the day, love is love. It was so great to see Preeti stand up to her family regarding being with Daniel. This is a good, quick game romance and I enjoyed it! The Trouble with Hating You was one of my favorite reads last year, so I was very excited for this one and it did not disappoint! If you love second chance romance, super smart female characters, swoonworthy past loves, strong female friendships, well-handled anxiety representation, and realistic handling of family and community issues you will love this book.
