Szczególnie zachęciły mnie barwne opisy nietypowych scenerii i możliwość obserwacji humbaków oraz pingwinów w ich naturalnym środowisku. To było moje drugie spotkanie z twórczością autorki. Przedstawiona historia zaintrygowała mnie od samego początku, czytało mi się lekko i przyjemnie, mimo nieco irytującej głównej bohaterki. To, co najbardziej mnie ujęło w tej opowieści to z pewnością miejsce, gdzie rozgrywała się główna fabuła (na statku, bądź na mroźnym lądzie Antarktydy). Sama intryga nie porwała mnie na tyle, jak tego oczekiwałam. Liczyłam na większy dreszczyk emocji, choć było poprawnie i ciekawie, autorka mogła nieco bardziej wykorzystać możliwości trudnego położenia Olivii. Zakończenie jest mocnym atutem i oryginalnym zwieńczeniem całej historii. To był dobrze spędzony czas, lecz uważam, że poprzednia książki McCulloch była zdecydowanie lepsza i bardziej emocjonująca. You wouldn’t believe how fast I preordered Leigh Bardugo’s standalone the second the story synopsis dropped. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the mesmerizing writing in the book spoke to my soul. Hands down one of my top three reads of 2024! The axis of the book revolved around a girl who could perform miracles and aimed to change her lot in life. The Golden Age of Spain, the Inquisition, and the historical characters figures were adeptly woven into the narrative. Never once did it feel like just a nod to historical accuracy and nothing more. The magic system unfolded steadily over the course of the book. The use of nature from pomegranates and rosemary to the indescribable scent of orange blossoms felt authentic. There are no heroes or saints, but flawed humans making the best possible choices with the options and circumstances they were dealt with. The Familiar is nothing short of a masterpiece. • Homesick Candle Contest • Homesick announced they were doing a candle creation contest and they would produce the winning candle. The parameter was to submit an idea by 4/19 of what your dream candle would be and how it would smell/look. It’s a one time submission per person kind of deal. Making an idea for it was a nice deviation from the recent string of illustrations. I’m currently looking for a small cozy gaming candle that’s suited for a quiet evening of mindless gaming. Preferably a 7.5oz candle since it’s small and has a burn time of approximately 30 hours. You can probably finish one or two indie games in that time frame. I currently can’t find a gaming theme candle that I truly like so that was my submission. Designing a candle package mockup wasn’t required, but I still made one just for fun. I pulled a little from everything in the photo to piece together a video game box. I’ll show what the mockup looks like the first week of May after the contest finalists are announced. If anyone could make this candle in the future then it probably be @homesick since they have candles for everything else. Last year @howlinglibraries and I buddy read House of Hollow. I really enjoyed that book and was looking forward to reading this one. We decided to buddy read this one together as well. This book was just as gruesome and detailed as House of Hollow. I will say the who done it reveal in the end kind of got me. Definitely didn’t see that coming. Also I couldn’t really stand one of the main characters which really dampened my enjoyment of the book overall. I did enjoy this one but I preferred House of Hollow to this one. • The Anthology • Happy TTPD Release Day 🖤 I listened to that soul wrecking album called ‘The Anthology’ on repeat until this drawing study was completed. Breaking down ‘Girl with the Pearl Earring’ by Vermeer into blocks of color was a mind twisting puzzle to say the least. Originally the background was going to be burnt umber, but I ended up scribbling with a black pen until it felt complete. Listening to Taylor’s songs about the darkest nights influenced how dark the background became. The next piece will undoubtedly be a bit brighter and have more color. • Olympic Flame • The Olympic flame was lit in Greece and currently on its way to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games via torch bearers. Seems like a great time to talk about greek mythology retellings. I only preordered one this year and it’s Jennifer Saint’s Hera. Reason? Because it’s Hera. Jennifer Saint is the queen of greek retellings in my eyes and will always recommend her work. I appreciate how her books focus on lesser known characters that aren’t typically seen in other retellings. Jennifer’s interpretation of Ariadne is one of my favorite retellings of all time. The book features a duel storyline between Ariadne and her younger sister, Phaedra. Their perspectives on the events during and after Theseus and the Minotaur run parallel to each other. Lesser known aspects of several myths are explored and adeptly woven together in a seamless manner. Atalanta and Elektra are equally well written with deep character exploration so I know Hera won’t disappoint. Would recommend for anyone in need of a different take on Greek retellings. • Yellow Palette • Yellow is my least favorite color, but no one would have guessed by the amount of yellow markers in the studio. Any yellow aspect seen in my illustrations is a combination of different shades layered together. It takes a few different shades to create a vibrant yellow that I personally like. The sunflowers were created using pretty much all the markers/pens seen above. I wouldn’t be caught dead in yellow but drawing with it can be enjoyable. 🏜️Hiking with Pride and Prejudice🏜️ 🏜️We hiked West Fork in Sedona today! I brought this @penguinclassics edition of Pride and Prejudice that was gifted to me by my cousin. I put it in a ziplock bag just in case I fell into the water, which luckily did not happen. This trail requires you to wade through water and cross Oak Creek several times. We hiked 9 miles to the farthest we could go and back. The whole trail is 14 miles one way! The water was freezing but it was so much fun! I love northern Arizona for the smell of pine and it was so cool to see the trees growing on the red cliffs.🏜️ 🏜️Planning on hiking at least once a week this summer and I’ll bring different books along. • Across the Stars • Running outside of the bookstore to watch the solar eclipse was my main character moment for the week. What killed the vibe was the fact I had to go right back to work. Still cool to cross off a bucket list item. The eclipse did inspire another drawing idea to the sketchbook list. Originally it was going to feature my portrait, but I changed it to feature Padme after my friend kept showing me edits of Episode III. Our shared toxic trait is watching Revenge of the Sith and expecting a different ending. Padme’s portrait ended up pairing perfectly with Anakin’s portrait from September. I can’t stop staring at them side by side. Now they can both float across the stars while I go back to drawing something less melancholic. Stratili sme všetko. A čo sme získali? "Žijeme," hovorím mu. Pozitíva: - príbeh je napísaní z pohľadu troch hlavných postáv a to bola pre mňa najlepšia voľba. Nahliadli sme do toho zo všetkých strán a tak sme mohli vidieť aj rôznorodé pohľady na život v kupoly a postavenie každého v spoločnosti. Plus Bea, Alina a Quin boli komplexné postavy ktorým som si vedela hneď vytvoriť puto a oni sami medzi sebou mali neskutočnú chémiu a energiu. Bola som ich veľká fanúšička a záležalo mi ich na nich. - ide o post-apo ktoré malo grády. Od začiatku do konca sa niečo dialo a pritom to nebolo umelo naťahované ako to často býva zvykom. Všetko je dobre a zrozumiteľne vysvetlené. Keď sa nad tým ešte zamyslíte pochopíte že autorka silno naráža že by sme sa mali starať viac o nás, o prírodu a naše okolie lebo to môže dopadnúť zle, predovšetkým pre nás. Negatíva: Dĺžka. Toto je ten prípad kde si autorka mohla dať na čas a uderiť nám pár stránok na vyše či už z pohľadu z minulosti alebo celkovo z deju. Proste som chcela viac. Moje hodnotenie je 4/5. Dech mal ku dokonalosti nauzaj málo. Toto post- apo ma neskutočne bavilo a malo guleeee. Niečo sa dialo na každej jednej strane a odsýpalo to ako hodinky. Taká vyvážená zmes medzi akčným filmom a drámou. Niečo tomu podobné. Jedná sa o staršiu sériu ale keby toto natočil netflix bolo by to super. Určite by som tomu to dala šancu lebo toto začne a nepustí. Der Roman ist einfach und eingängig, 3 Minuten mit einer hübschen Melodie, die ihr mitsingen könnt, und dann ist er vorbei und ihr macht – hoffentlich mit einem Lächeln auf den Lippen – mit eurem Tag weiter. Der Roman ist ein schneller Ritt ohne viel Schnickschnack, dafür mit ordentlich coolen und lustigen Sprüchen, temporeichem Schlagabtausch und einer pfeffrigen, temporeichen Story, die einfach nur Spaß macht und super unterhält 😄👌 Frisch arbeitslos, findet Jamie Gray durch seinen Freund Tom einen neuen Job, bei dem er am Anfang garnicht so genau weiß, auf was er sich da eigentlich einlässt. Durch ein Tor in Grönland gelangt er in eine andere Dimension, um sich dort um riesige Wesen zu kümmern, die er vorher eigentlich nur aus Filmen kannte; Kaijus. Jamies Job ist zunächst Träger („Ich trage Dinge“), weitet sich aber mit der Zeit aus zu Kaiju-Pheromon-Bestäuber, Touristen-Aufpasser und Mann-für-Alles. Bei der GEK arbeitet man noch im Team zusammen, verleiht einander aussgekräftige Orden wie „Saftige Zwischenmahlzeit“ oder „Heilige Scheiße“ und nennt die Kaijus Edward und Bella. Als Bella schwanger ist und einige Eier legt, wird deutlich, warum die Kaijus zum Einen in ihrer Dimension bleiben sollten (sie können nämlich mittels selbst ausgebrüteter Atomarer Energie auch in unsere Welt übertreten), zum Anderen aber auch vor machtgierigen Menschen beschützt werden sollten. ⬇️weiter in den Kommentaren⬇️

• Dinosaur Cookies • The Yale Peabody Museum recently reopened after a four year renovation and it is stunning inside. It was very sweet to watch the local kids rediscovering their love for dinosaurs. I had the pleasure of collaborating with some of the local school kids in my home city to create dinosaur cookie stickers. Apparently the Dorudon (ancient ancestor of the modern day whale) is a kid favorite. Trying to turn that one into a cookie was an interesting experience. There’s some ideas that I might rework at a later time - after getting a proper dinosaur book. #questisonoiviaggi ✨ #hardscifi Buongiorno readers e buon lunedì 💜 In questi ultimi giorni ci sono delle bellissime giornate calde, quindi vi propongo un libricino di fantascienza che sa di estate e ora vi convincerò a leggerlo graziea questi tre punti: 1) Le porte dell'oceano è un romanzo scritto da Arthur Clarke ed è la storia di John, un ragazzino orfano che viveva con gli zii e non ci andava per niente d'accordo. Così ha deciso di salire illegalmente in una nave diretta in Australia, ma quest'ultima è naufragata. John è stato salvato da dei delfini che l'hanno trasportato fino ad un'isola chiamata "Isola dei delfini". In quest'isola vivono degli studiosi che hanno trovato un sistema per comunicare con i delfini e altri "abitanti del mare" e creare una specie di comunità. 🐬🐠 2) Con poco più di 100 pagine e una narrazione molto scorrevole, "Le porte dell'oceano" può essere letto in un paio di giorni. Lo consiglio soprattutto a chi è nel periodo del "blocco del lettore".🧭📖 3) In base all'ambientazione, se siete già proiettati verso l'estate direi che è il momento più adatto per leggerlo, oppure segnatelo per l'estate! DER SOMMER IN DEM HIKARU STARB….. (Werbung // selbst gekauft) ….war ein sehr interessanter und vielversprechender Auftaktband 👍 Das Großformat von @altraverse.de ist schön zu lesen und die detaillierten Zeichnungen haben mir auch richtig gut gefallen! In dem Manga geht es um die Freundschaft zwischen Hikaru und Yoshiki, die in einem kleinen Dorf leben. Eines Tages geht Hikaru in die Berge und als er zurückkommt, ist er verändert. Als Yoshiki Hikaru zur Rede stellt kommt heraus, dass Hikaru in den Bergen gestorben ist und „ein Wesen“ Hikarus Körper in Besitz genommen hat; es trägt Hikarus Erinnerungen in sich und möchte Nichts Sehnlicher, als Hikarus Leben weiterzuführen - auch die Freundschaft zu Yoshiki bedeutet ihm viel. Yoshiki hingegen ist hin und hergerissen zwischen der Trauer um den Tod seines Freundes und der Freundschaft zum „neuen Hikaru“; außerdem ereignen sich mysteriöse Dinge im umliegenden Wald und im Dorf und die Frage, ob dieses „Wesen“ eine Gefahr darstellen könnte, schwebt über Allem. Mir hat dieser Mystery-Manga sehr gut gefallen und ich werde mir sofort den Folgeband bestellen. Where the Dark Stands Still is an absolute gem, I adored this woodland tale of a girl who feels too much with uncontrollable magic and an ancient demon who bargained himself away to protect his homeland Orlica. I loved the found family and sassy Jaga, the house ghost. I give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 stars! The only thing I wanted from this book was more story haha, the ending was great but it left me wanting to see how Liska and Eliasz would be together again. I genuinely did not think this was a stand alone with the ending, but the open-ended concept does add that mystery to this mysteriously magical folklorish tale. I definitely recommend!🌿 🌿The book is from Liska’s point of view, however the bonus chapter “A Witch and a Warden and a Demon in a Thicket” at the end of the @barnesandnoble exclusive edition provides Eliasz point of view yay! It’s a nice chapter that does tie up some loose ends. I absolutely love the cover art for this book as well.
