Now more than ever, people are worried about how much they weigh. In only the opposite direction people in a effort to lose weight and extra fat achieve being too lean only by popular misconceptions of what today's society deems fit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Being thin does not necessarily reduce one's health risk either. In fact by being becoming too thin can lead to serious eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Thinness simply refers to weighing less than the recommended values in age-height-weight tables. 3 Cues to generate upper back tightness in the back squat One of the main things I'll go through whilst teaching the back squat with clients is creating upper back tightness; often caused by poor technique, posture or even weak musculature. If you're squatting with a rounded upper back, this can decrease your power output and increase risk of injury. Creating tightness in the upper back before lifting is critical in ensuring better force transfer, IE helps you lift heavy but safetly and optimally. 1️⃣ Get your upper back as tight as possible prior to unracking. Think about squeezing your shoulders back (retraction) and pulling them down (bend the bar around you) as hard as you can to stabilise the shoulder joint and prevent rounding. 2️⃣ Bar placement. If the bar is placed too high up on neck, you are more likely to round forward. Play around with a lower bar position and follow through with tip 1. 3️⃣ PRACTICE. Do this consistently on every set and rep you do. Treat the empty bar like you would a 1 rep max. Once you get into the habit of doing this, it will become almost automatic in your set-up. There can be many forms of back rounding, all very individual to the lifter. If you need a hand with anything lifting or coaching related, just send a DM, happy to chat through it 👌😎

Friday night weight training workout. Very much a rush after work as didn’t finish until half six & booked in to gym at seven. More deadlift tuition & practice, plus lots of stability & balance work. I’ve not run all week since Sundays race. Mainly because I’ve not had the energy after work, but two gym sessions is better than nothing. I’m preparing for a long run tomorrow, 20 miles 3:1 run/walk last long one before marathon in three weeks. The target is somewhere around four hours. I wanted to get out to the south west costal path to really prep for race day. However with it being bank holiday weekend I don’t think I want to battle the traffic! I’ve got a fairly hilly route in mind which should be decent. I’m still concerned the marathon might be a stretch too far. Tomorrow will tell me a lot. Sundays ten mile race at marathon pace went okay, only a couple of walking breaks for the really big hills. That’s was hard work! Thought my last run was a couple of weeks ago… three weeks since I last ran! I have been on the bike, played football, had a weekend away. But time flies when work & life get in the way. Of course I have had a little lack of motivation due to the doctors, but really shouldn’t have left it this long. I’m glad I made the effort today as Sunday is the lytchett 10, long awaited, postponed from March 2020! Don’t think I could have run 10 miles feeling like I did this evening. Tomorrow is my first session a the new 180 strength gym in #poole loking forward to get a bit of focused weight training. Been a while & I’m sure I won’t be lifting what I used to. But plan is to get back to feeling strong & improving core to help with running. Still undecided about the marathon. I might have missed too much training. I really shouldn’t do it. But it is booked! There isn’t a half, only a 16 or 6 miles alternate. I was checking out the website & they have changed the cut off from eight & half hour to seven. I think seven is so able, but not as comfortable as I thought. If I do, do it, it is definitely a 3:1 run walk. I won’t be able to run it all! I’m think a lot depends on how Sunday goes. If I enjoy the ten mile race I think I’ll push on with training & give it a go. If I really struggle I’ll have admit defeat this time. Finally back in the gym, followed consultants orders and rested from all exercise for 6 weeks in the hope it would finally settle the back injury, but unfortunately it hasn’t been the case, so for my mental sanity, and general health and well being I’m back in the gym. Homemade protein cookie bars anyone?🍪🍪🍪 If you’re trying to get more protein in but are put off by the price of protein bars, here’s a recipe so you can make some yourself!👇🏼 All you’ll need is... • 100g protein powder of choice • 100g smooth peanut butter • 3 large eggs • 45g coconut flour • 45g coconut sugar • 2 tbsp honey/ golden syrup • 40g dark chocolate chips • An 18x24cm baking tray (or similar) lined with baking paper To make them is super easy too... 1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees. Measure the peanut butter, eggs and honey into a bowl and mix until smooth. 2. Add the protein powder, coconut sugar, coconut flour and chocolate chips then mix into a dough. You may need to use your hands for this part. 3. Transfer the dough into the lined baking tin and press it out evenly into the corners. Then put it in the oven for 8-10 minutes. 4. Remove them from the oven and leave to cool before slicing into 8-12 slices, depending how big you’d want them and enjoy! When cut into 12 they work out at around 155 calories each, with 10g protein, 12g carbs and 7g of fats. 🍉Found this cute little packet of watermelon seeds yesterday in @sainsburys in the baking section. This tiny little sachet of seeds packs in 8.4g of protein and 2.2g of fibre. 🍉 I added a dessert spoon of them to my chia seed oats this morning for an extra bit of crunch. 🍓Recipe for Chia Seed Coconut Cashew Overnight Oats 40g Oats 1 dessert spoon chia seeds 150-200ml of @innocent Coconut Milk Mix and leave to soak in the fridge for 45 mins or as I did however long it took me to do the school run! Pour in to a bowl, top with 1 tspn @meridianfoods cashew nut butter, 1 dessert spoon of watermelon seeds or more and a few sliced strawberries! Just swap any full variation you can’t do for tempo down movements. Meaning you do the same movement but as slow on the way down as possible and then just get up to the start position again in any way you can. Failure is when you can’t hold 5 seconds down with good form. 😷 Complete 1 round at the end of your session or up to 3 as a session if you’re brave! 🔑 It’s all about leverages and going to failure with good form. It’s Wednesday, which means another recipe for you lot👩🏻‍🍳 On the menu this week is my go-to chicken curry recipe for you guys to try🥘 To make 4 portions you will need: 🍗 650g chicken breast (diced) 🧅 1 large yellow onion 🧄 2 garlic cloves 🥫 250g passata 🥥 400ml full fat coconut milk 🧂1 tsp sea salt 🍗1 chicken stock cube 🥭1 tbsp mango chutney 🥄2 tbsp mild curry powder, 2 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp ginger 🥄1 tbsp cornflour 🥄1 tbsp olive oil Method: 1. Dice the onion and whilst heating the oil in a large pan over a medium heat, then cook it until it’s softened. 2. Finely chop, or use a garlic crusher to add the garlic and cook for a further minute before adding the spices to the pan. 3. Next add the diced chicken breast and salt and lightly brown the chicken. 4. Mix in the passata, stock cube and chutney and bring to a simmer, then add the coconut milk and leave it for 10-15 minutes to let it reduce. Stir occasionally. 5. Mix the cornflour with a tbsp of water then add it to the pan before cooking for a further 5 minutes. 6. Serve with rice and fresh coriander. Each serving contains about 425 calories without the rice, so if your current goal is to lose weight, here are some options to save some cals... 👉🏼 Use low fat coconut milk instead of full fat. 👉🏼 Make 5 portions instead of 4. 👉🏼 Add a can of chickpeas to the mix instead of serving with rice. 👉🏼 Serve with cauliflower rice. Fancy a go on the platform? Here a few tips for your first Powerlifting competition. - ⏰ Get there early - Familiarise yourself with the venue, check points of interest and get those rack heights done. You’ll need those for your weigh in. - ⚖️ Weigh in - Be prepared. Have your membership card at the ready and openers of each lift on hand. - 💼 Kit check - Have a bag with your equipment you’re going to be wearing at the ready. The referees will want to check them and make sure you’re compliant with the rule book. - 📝 Prep your warmup - It’s a good idea to have your warmup weights leading up to your opener written down to follow. This is so you can time your last warmup in relation to your opener on the platform. Practise these in your training. - ⚪️ Open light - Good rule of thumb for your opener would be a weight you can do 3 reps of on any given day. Remember, its not how you start, it’s how you finish. - ⏱ 60 second rule - You’ll have 60 seconds from when the speaker shouts “bars loaded” for you to start your lift. You’ll then have 60 seconds to hand in your attempt for the next lift. Be prepared and ready. - 🔴 Missing attempts - We’ve all been there. If in doubt, stick to the same weight for your next attempt. In all fairness, it highly depends on the context of the missed lift, but as a beginner, get used to hitting as many attempts as possible. Build that total. - Any topics you would like us to cover? Phat Pump Fridays 👊 What’s that pump feeling but limited on equipment? All you need is one Plate/Dumbell/Kettlebell/Yoga block or just anything that isn’t going to break or bend under your superior strength. 👇 Give this a go... ▫️ Prayer Chest Press x10 ▫️ Waiter Frontal Raises x10 ▫️ Frontal Raise Hold xAMRAP (Up to 1min) ▫️ Press Ups xAMRAP ▪️ AMRAP = As Many Reps As Possible ▪️ 1-2min rest ▪️ 3-6 Rounds (6 is obviously more advanced) 🔑 The key to this is INTENT. Every single rep you want to squeeze as hard as you can at BOTH the top and bottom of the movement for 1-2 seconds. Without this you’ll struggle to get the intensity throughout especially if you’re a big strong person (we know all you 180 gang are exactly this!) 💾 If you aren’t training today. Want an easy to prep, nutrient dense meal which is low in calories? Try this Spicy sweet potato and pumpkin soup😍 To make 5-6 portions you’ll need: 🍠1KG of sweet potato 🎃 500g pumpkin or any other squash 🧅 2 large yellow onions 🧄 5 gloves garlic 🍗 2 chicken/ veg stock cubes 🥛 200ml whole milk 💧 Boiling water 🌶 A sprinkle of cayenne pepper 🧂Sea salt To make: 1. Chop the veg and add to a large pan with the stock cubes then add water until about 4/5 of the veg is submerged. Then cover and bring to boil. 2. When it starts boiling turn the heat down slightly, and stir occasionally for about 20-25 minutes. 3. Once everything is really soft, remove it from the heat, add the milk and a sprinkle of cayenne pepper the blend it all together until it’s smooth. 4. Add sea salt to taste, then serve with shredded chicken breast and black pepper on top! This is super easy to reheat, and could also be frozen in portions for a later date. Lockdown 2.0 has hit us and we are probably all already fed up with it. It is easy to get lost in the interruption. With this in mind I am going to focus on @williamaitken04 Will went into Lockdown 1.0 the strongest he has ever been, hitting PBs and was on to hit some even bigger PBs. As we know Lockdown was a drag, lots of time away from what we love doing but Will engineered (literally) his own rack at home and sourced a bar and plates to hold onto as much strength as he could. 12 weeks later, the last week before Lockdown 2.0, Will hit a PB triple and doubled his comp max on squats for a PB, at 6am in the morning (talk about rise and grind). Lockdown provides an obstacle to our usual routine and training habits BUT that doesn't mean you should give up. Be like Will and engineer your own success. A good place to start are our ZOOM classes, available to all of our members. Make sure you take this lockdown by the horns and keep making progress. One of the benefits of lockdown is that many of you may find yourself with more time to make a good breakfast🥜🍓 Give these peanut butter and jam proats a go by following these 3 simple steps. So you can start your days right and ready to smash some online classes/ home workouts💪🏼 You’ll need: •40g porridge oats •1 scoop of vanilla/ salted caramel protein powder •250ml milk of choice •1 banana •handful of blueberries •1 tbsp peanut butter •1 tbsp strawberry/ raspberry jam •1 tbsp Hershey’s chocolate sauce (or similar) To make: 1. Weigh the oats, milk and protein powder and a pinch on sea salt into a saucepan and gently heat until they reach your desired consistency. 2. Put the oats in a bowl, slice the banana place it on top with the blueberries. 3. Weigh out a tablespoon of peanut butter and jam on top of the fruit then add the chocolate sauce and enjoy! For this recipe made with unsweetened almond milk works out at about 535 calories and 30g protein per bowl. Stuart continues to make progress with his overall fitness, mobility and kettlebell moves. We are working on strengthening his posterior chain and shoulder to aid his swimming and health in general.
