Enter, The Shining. I read this whilst on holiday a year ago and boy, did it give me cabin fever whilst being “stuck” in a steel can with four other people 🤣 . The part that most sticks out for me is the topiary animals. That did freak me out a little 👀 I’m not saying this is Kings best work but for me, I loved it. . I’ve yet to read Dr. Sleep, I’m holding off to join on Johann’s readalong 🙌 .

I loved the first half! I flew through it. The character development was fantastic. Part two was just ok, I lost interest a bit. Then it ramped up again and the ending was great. There was SO MUCH hype about this book on here that I thought it was going to blow me away. It did not. The illustrations by Barker were very cool though. I also have the graphic novel (bought by mistake) so I’ll check that out too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📚 Other Voices, Other Tombs by @cemeterygatesm was definitely one of the best story collections I’ve read lately. I found it repetitive, boring, and slow to read through. It was original, I’ll give it that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📚 I started Of Mice & Men honestly not knowing anything about it other than it being a classic. I read it in a day, during two baby naps! It was a short book, there wasn’t a ton of character development, not too much happened, yet I loved it and couldn’t put it down! Great ending. I really liked where the story was going with the murders and witchcraft, then I’m not sure what happened but it got boring. Good morning everyone! Another month has come and gone and we look back how well we did with our reading. While I didn’t get to start the LOTR trilogy like I anticipated, I’m still pretty happy with how well I did! I started off the month with the audiobook for Song of Susannah and finishing off the Locke & Key series when I wasn’t listening to the audiobook. I borrowed my copies of Locke & Key from the library, so I had to improvise with other books in this stack 😂 Next, I decided to be a true #Bahd and finish Canadianity and squeeze in Blanky by @kealanpatrick as part of a readalong. After those were done, I started on The Cider House Rules as part of a mini readalong that I hosted. I volunteered at a folk festival, which really ate away at my reading time, so it took me longer than I anticipated to finish that one. And to cap the month off, I wanted to sneak in one last summer read with Joyland, which I really enjoyed! Now onto my birthday month of September, Which i already plan to read some Lord of the Rings, continue on my journey to the Dark Tower and read The Institute when it comes out. Day 31 of #grohliciousaugust 🎶Over and Out ~ Wrap Up. So this is the last day of this challenge and I posted every single day! Woo-hoo! It's been an absolute blast taking photos, getting creative, listening to a hell of a lot of Foo Fighters and checking out some amazing accounts! This is my wrap up for the month. I never do wrap ups as a rule but just this once I'll make an exception as this is such a terrific challenge. First up was Kristin Hannah's The Great Alone. I then picked up the sequel to Leigh Bardugo's Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm. Next up was an Agatha Christie that I am so glad I finally read - Murder on the Orient Express. Lastly (and I am still reading it) is Kim Harrison's 9th novel in the Hollows series, Pale Demon. Not spectacular but not dreary either this wrap up of mine. This is particularly why I don't do wraps ups as they usually seem partly competitive and I don't want to be a part of that narrative. So.... The last post. Day 30 of #grohliciousaugust 🎶Have it All ~ Book Haul Well guys and gals this is the penultimate day of this awesome kickass challenge involving the ever wonderful Dave Grohl. Its been quite the challenge posting everyday, but I'm mighty glad I stuck it out as I've come across some amazing accounts in the process. My haul this month has been quite marvelous mostly because I was kindly gifted some of these books and I can't wait to thank the kind people who sent them to me. From top to bottom: my awesome friend @roundtheworldkt left behind Americanah, Half of a Yellow Sun and The Spy Who Came in from the Cold when she recently moved away from SA. I'd rather have her here to be honest but I guess these books will have to do 😂 Next up I received Step Sister and Becoming Dinah in July's @thebcase . This most brilliant subscription box contained all sorts of exciting goodies pertaining to the theme; Anti-Fairy Tales. The wonderful @kurtjbrindley kindly sent me a copy of his book The Good Kill for me to read and review. This book is next up on my To Read list and I can't wait! The incredibly awesome people at @penguinrandomhouse sent me this ARC copy of Mary Beth Keane's Ask Again, Yes and I am over the moon happy about starting this beauty. Books about death, anyone? . At my house, if you want to read about death, I guess you have to head to the memoir shelf. This accidentally color-coordinated collection are a mix of books I've read and those that are still waiting for me. . I Am, I Am, I Am is the one I've completed and loved, but I guess some might consider it a stretch because no one dies, although it does deal with the many times we all might have died and have had to face our own mortality. . I'm halfway into The Light of the World. It's taking me awhile, but that's okay because eventhough this book be little, it is Heavy. . The other two I'm waiting for a time when I need a good cry. The three books here are all in their own way an aspect of death and a different way of looking at it. Tuesdays with Morrie are the lessons learned in a life that is almost at an end. Ways of Dying is the story of a professional mourner who falls in love. The Book Thief involves a Grim Reaper during one of the world's most catastrophic periods in history. All of these books have made an impact in my life and have helped in their own small way ease the confusion that death surely is. It does not make it any less scary but it helps nonetheless. Day 28 of #grohliciousaugust is Big Me - Big books. This Bonaparte biography is a 700+ page beast that I have not gotten around to yet. I don't know much about him except that he was short, won a ton of battles and only fell when his ego grew too big and he thought he could win a war with Russia in the winter. Spoiler alert : Russian winters will defeat anybody and everybody 🌨😨❄ This looks to be a fascinating read but I gotta be honest, I'm not going to get to it for awhiiiiiile. Do you love "big" books? . I, personally, am a fan of a well-written, giant tome, but it can be hard to start one considering some of these can take the same time it would take to read 2 or 3 "normal" books. But I also find that getting to the end of a 500-page book has its own satisfaction. . This month is a special one for my big book reading, too. Day 27 of #grohliciousaugust is Something From Nothing - Surprisingly good actually. It's not that I thought this book wouldn't be good but it's so different than I thought it would be. The Disney movie gets dark in parts but this is a whole nother level of dark. It's also philosophical, there is a chapter dedicated to the last two leaves on a tree as winter approaches and their musings about what has happened/what is going to happen to them and it's really cool 🍁🌬🍁🌬 It was written in 1923 by Austrian Felix Salten and is considered one of the earliest environmental novels. It was also banned in 1936 by Nazi Germany because they saw it as a "political allegory on the treatment of Jews in Europe." That’s the only reason I wanted to read this. I’ve actually had this book on my shelf probably for 10+ years and I always put it off because I was afraid it would be terrible compared to the movie. I am Jack’s stupid brain. . I was terribly wrong. This is a freaking phenomenal read. Tyler Durden was a lot more deprived and sick than what I saw in the movie and the narrator was a LOT more involved than what the movie depicts. The violence the dialogue are top notch. I remember going into Bag of Bones, thinking that let's just get this over with, I didn't have really high expectations. But I was totally blown out of the water by the scaryness, sadness and the great storytelling in this book! . The setting is very typical King, the main character is a writer, his wife has died, and then he moves to a place where weird things start happening. So no reinventing the wheel or anything. But I just loved the hell out of this one! And I was so scared! Ghosts don't usually rattle my bones that much, but this one was creepy AF. . I've noticed Bag of Bones is sort of underrated, it doesn't get a lot of love on BG.
