A prime example of why I read books more than once. When I read this as a single 20-something, I found the story interesting. Reading again as a married 30-something mother, the reaction I had to the story was visceral. I read the entire book in one sitting, staying up until 1am to do so. Stories may stay the same but the impact they can have changes as you do. A modern story from Phillipa Gregory. Such a good read. #thelittlehouse #phillipagregory #fiction #booksofinstagram

Scavenger Hunt Challenge! I saw this tag from @mayhan_and_books and thought of joining in the fun. Here are my books with: 👩 Face: The Lady of The Rivers 🏘 House: Eventown 🐉Animal: Eldest 💐 Flower: Three Daughters of Eve 🚗 Car/train/plane/boat: The World According to Bob The most challenging out of all was the mode of transportation. I only found one that has a bus & a van on it 😆. The easiest for me is face, flower & animal (as I have loads of cats & dragons novel). All of these are still in my TBR, hopefully I can find the strength to finish them all 🥲. Join in the fun too! #ladernierereine #phillipagregory #romanshistoriques

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book Review. I love Philippa Gregory’s stories, and this one did not disappoint. I loved that the story was told from Ann Bolyn’s sister’s point of view. Mary brings to light many new aspects of what happened. I knew of course that Henry had a fetish for the chopping block—occasionally giving one of the wives he claimed wasn’t a wife a “break” LOL by banishing her to an abbey or some such instead. From this story, I see how Mary didn’t realize how good she had it by not becoming a wife of King Henry, something she so desperately wanted. She paints him as quite the catch. Maybe he was at that time. What I am curious about is what became of the two children she had with him, William and Catherine. Someone spare me having to read nonfiction to find out! Comment on this post. Highly recommend! #book #bookstagram #fiction #goodreads #historical #phillipagregory #story #reader #readers #reading #readingcommunity

“He would never be her little boy, just as he had never been her baby.” Ruth is certain of one undeniable truth: she will never be able to measure up to her Mother-in-Law, Elizabeth. Whilst Elizabeth is able to perfectly slide into the roles of wife, mother, grandmother, Ruth is nothing more than an awkward fit. When Ruth and Patrick plan to move into ‘The Little House’ - the smaller house seemingly at the end of Patrick’s parents’ drive - Ruth is determined to hold onto her own life and identity. But one redundancy and one pregnancy later, it is hard to work out where Ruth fits into this perfect family scene. And when Elizabeth is everywhere, with a key into the house and a say in every major decision, how could Ruth possibly hold onto herself? So when Elizabeth starts commenting on Ruth’s mothering and mentions things that Ruth remembers differently, Ruth must be in the wrong, mustn’t she? I borrowed this audiobook from the library and MY-OH-MY did it have me in a chokehold. It actually made me 45 minutes late for a social gathering just because I had to finish it before I left! The only word I can use to describe my experience with this book is suffocating. Slowly but slowly, Ruth’s life and existence is tighten and tighten and restricted and restricted that it just become baffling and horrific. I read somewhere that this read was described as a modern day The Yellow Wallpaper and I cannot think of a better descriptor. The most horrific thing about this read it just how believable the events of the narrative are and that the things that entrap Ruth are so possibly and so easily done. As with the nature of psychological thrillers, there isn’t a lot I can say of the actual events of the narrative without spoiling it, but Gregory does a superb job of making the biggest horror in this novel humans and society itself. The fact that that the horrors of this read are set against the backdrop of the British upper classes just offers in itself a bigger societal critique on top of the discussion surrounding gender. And not to be that person, but THAT ENDING!! Genuinely had me stood in the dining room with my headphones on completely paralysed.

Book review: The Lady of the Rivers ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Any woman who dares to make her own destiny will always put herself in danger” I have always been fascinated with British history, especially the 1400s onwards. The Tudors and Plantagenets are such an intriguing part of it. This book (and series) is unique in that it focuses on the women behind the scenes. It did take me a while to get into the book (I started this in 2021) but the last 200 pages flew by for me. This was my first Philippa Gregory novel and I LOVE it!! Her writing is so captivating that you feel like you are almost there with her. The Lady of the Rivers is the story of Jaquetta of Luxembourg and her marriages and subsequent alignment with the House of Lancaster. The author cleverly weaves Jaquetta’s journey from innocent young girl to a woman with tremendous influence in the royal court. The power game is never ending and sometime the back and forth is a little tiring but that’s just the way it happened so it’s not the author’s fault. I’m so looking forward to starting the next book in chronological order.

Fallen Skies - Phillipa Gregory I absolutely love Phillipa Gregory's work and this book was no exception. Set after the first world war it tells the story of a rushed marriage between a war-hero and a singer. I felt that Gregory really captured the time period and the issues of the time within the novel. None of the characters were particularly likeable, in fact I found them all rather self-absorbed, but I was still able to sympathise with Lily and even Stephen, who suffered from shell-shock, at points in the story. My favourite character of course was Charlie being in my opinion the only "good character". I felt the relationships between the characters, particularly Stephen and his parents, were really interesting and well-written. The book kept me gripped from beginning to end and I was disappointed when I read the last page that I would not be able to find out more about these characters and continue their story. The ending for me was very abrupt and open-ended which I'm not sure I enjoyed as it would have been nice to see the characters get the rounded ending that deserved. 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #phillipagregory #fallenskies #worldwarone #roaring20s #shellshock #1920s #1920ssinger #warhero #goodreads #book #novel #historicalfiction #bookreview #4stars #4starreview

💐Recenze knihy The Lady of the Rivers 🌺Autor: Phillipa Gregory 🇬🇧Jazyk: Anglický🇬🇧 🎀Před lety jsem se dívala na seriál Bílá královna. Jedno vzít Philipě Grogory nemohu, ona má dar a talent. 🎖🎖🎖🎖/5 #phillipagregory #knihavanglictine #readeveryday #englishhistorynerd #knihajezavislost #kniznitipyknizkyvsude #ctuknihyzknihovny #valkaruzi #warofroses #readeveryday #readingtime📖 #knihyrecenze #recenzent #knihyohistorii #ctemesradosti #knihomolka #ladyofrivers

Changeling ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ . That's two YA's for me in a row! And it was another solid read. I enjoyed all the characters but Frienze was my favourite, such a joker but also street smart and compassionate. It wasn't difficult to work out who the villian in the nunnery was. Some might call it predictable but I think the point to the story was seeing how Luca evaluated the evidence. And then we move on to another mystery...werewolves!! At this point the plot did feel a bit disjointed but I continued to enjoy the interaction between the four main characters and the hint of romance. The ending did leave some issues unresolved which will no doubt be addressed in later installments and YES I'm definitely keen to read more of this series. I read this book as part of the #52bookclubchallenge, magical realism prompt but now that I've finished it, I wonder if it qualifies? The only supernatural encounter was so subtle if you blinked you would have missed it. (Ishraq's wish that appears in Frienze and Luca's dream). Although I'm not convinced Frienze released the girls from prison so there may have been a little more magic at play. Guess I have to read the next book to see if my hunch is right. . #changeling #phillipagregory #historicalfiction #fantasyfiction #magicalrealism #the52bookclub2024 #52bookclubchallenge2024 #bookstagram #booksiveread2024 #orderofdarkness

Last week accidentally became Elizabethan Audiobook Week: 🪡 🧵 @sewingmatters looking at the Queen of Scots through embroidery - I’ve been buried in masters reading on Tudor furnishings and the textiles of Bess of Hardwick. ‘Scotch Mary’ kept coming up, so I wanted some biographical background to this side of her life. ‘Embroidering her Truth’ couldn’t have been fitter for purpose: written by a professional seamstress and banner maker with a keen eye for the emotional and social investment in every stitch, it weaves fascinating historical and technical detail about how fabric and embroidery provided a voice, a sanctuary, and legacy for Mary throughout her traumatic life and up to the present day. It’s a privilege to be able to study history at a time when this sort of evidence is allowed to speak. 🎭 innumerable Shakespearean Henrys and a pair of suspicious Richards - Henry VI parts 2&3 take the top spots on the podium, with Richard III coming, coincidentally, third. The Archangel unabridged recordings are wonderful - David Tenant especially brilliant as Hen VI. Highly recommend. 😘 Philippa Gregory on Leicester and Liz - I am generally a PG fan, but ‘The Virgin’s Lover’ wasn’t my favourite. Very cleverly plotted, and an intriguing take on the relationships, but perhaps the characters weren’t as compelling as usual, or perhaps history trumps fiction on this one. 🐺 last but not least (and not Elizabethan but Tudor enough to sneak in), Hilary Mantel’s ‘Wolf Hall’. Theoretically ‘slow reading’ this as part of @footnotes.and.tangents #wolfcrawl, which should take in the whole trilogy this year, but I started two weeks late and have accidentally raced ahead, because it’s just as wonderful second time round and this unabridged audio read by Ben Miles is excellent. And I’d forgotten how much I love Uncle Norfolk.

Elizabeth Woodville, a woman of extraordinary beauty and ambition, secretly marries the newly crowned boy king. While she rises to the demands of her exalted position and fights for the success of her family, her two sons become the central figures in a famous unsolved mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the lost princes in the Tower of London. Do you have “go to” authors that you read when you are looking for a certain type of story?  Phillipa Ashley is one of my “go to” authors that I go to for Christmas and summer reads that I know will both be a good story and have great characters. Freya has a history of being a runaway bride.  In grade school she ran away from a pretend wedding to young Travis, and as an eighteen-year-old, she also ran away from an engagement to the same Travis.  Now years later, Freya has a successful business preparing vacation homes for people in England’s Lake District.  She recently ended an engagement with a dependable boyfriend and has started to believe that she may never find love.  Travis returns to town this Christmas season.  He is now a famous wildlife photographer, and he has returned to start his own store and photography business in town.  He also wants to spend more time with his family.  The last thing he expects is to run back into Freya and immediately have the same old feelings for her again.  Freya does not want to get into a relationship again as she seems to have no luck with them.  Will Freya and Travis be able to figure out their future? I loved Freya and Travis, but also all the other characters in this novel.  Phillipa Ashley writes wonderful characters.  I also liked how Freya and Travis both had troubling aspects of their childhood that have carried over into their adult relationships.  Being able to understand the past helps them both to move on into the future.  Their family situations were important and solving some of those problems added a greater depth to the story.  Freya and Travis also had great chemistry.  They had a friends-to-lovers and a second chance romance story, both tropes that I enjoy. I also loved the Lake District.  It sounded beautiful and I loved the small-town feel.  Everyone knew each other and helped each other out.  The Christmas spirit was in the story.  I loved this story from start to finish and it was the perfect story to be reading at Christmas.  It was one of my favorite books this Christmas season. . . . . . #fourchristmasesandawedding #phillipagregory @phillipa.ashleyauthor #Christmasbook #christmasfiction

Happy almost weekend! I’m left with about 80 pages in The Lady of the Rivers and it’s been a ride! I picked this book in 2022? It’s been a difficult one getting into and tough to read many pages a day? It’s packed with so much but my god, am I hooked now. Halfway through, I did think that I might not be able to read another Phillipa Gregory book but the closer I get to the ending, the more I want to pick up another one. 🤷🏻‍♀️ but that’s my plan this weekend - to finally finish this one and tick it off my list

Normal Women by #phillipagregory is definitely one of my most anticipated non-fiction books of 2024. I started it earlier today, and at 30 pages , I really like it. I love the short little sections, meaning you can easily dip in and out of it. This is a chunky book - well over 600 pages! So, being able to read it in short bursts with no hideously long chapters is going to make it so much more readable. After reading Unwell Women and some other non-fiction books focusing on women in 2023 I have decided this is something I want to do more of this year. I have quite a few books lined up that fit this theme. My christmas cactus has a beautiful flower on it - I'm so chuffed. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐5/5 #knihozrut #kniha #knihomolka #knihomol #instabook #instabookstagram #booklover #book #pantarei #martinus #phillipagregory

🎄 Christmas Book Haul 🎅 I personally think that books make the best presents and I was lucky enough to receive a little stack. ● Normal Women by Phillipa Gregory. ● Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-Reum ● Unlikeable Female Characters by Anna Bogutskaya ● If Cats Disappeared from the World by Genki Kawamura ● Solo by Jenny Tough ● Lord of the Flies by William Golding I can't wait to read these and many more in 2024. I have a couple of books to finish before the New Year and might even squeeze in some more - we'll see. I'm off work now, but I have lots of other lovely plans for my time off. 📖Fan of Phillipa Gregory? Try this! Just finished this superb title on Audible & now eagerly eating up the next volume! 👍🙂👍 It is a fast-paced, interesting novel. The main character is not what he seems, but mystery & opportunity twist his life into a fabulous Tudor epic... embracing Elizabeth I, Mary & the dangerous wrangle for the throne. Tis free on Audible if a member presently too. Merry Crimbletide 👍😊

Now I have some major writing goals complete I am looking forward to having some time to read some wonderful books especially now that the weather is not so nice and it is the cosiest time of the year to snuggle up with a book. I feel lucky to have worked with @sophietateauthor and can't wait to read her sequel The Way Out. I am also looking forward to reading @leah.toole.author second novel The Haunted Queen. Tom Felton and Phillipa Gregory's new books are also on my list. 📖This is the latest in a series of books by Ken Follett. Gutted I've binge listened on Audible & its already over! I get completely engrossed in his clever storytelling. The characters are interesting & the pace progresses quickly, but not fast enough to be confusing 👍 ⛪The first volumes focus on the creation of a cathedral - using masons and church as the main subjects. Subsequent books move onto the journey of surrounding villages and towns from the perspective of the residents. The stories address the divide between the gentry, ecclesiastical & common folk, the class system, touching on hunger, poverty, survival, changes in laws, mechanisation, power struggles, the impact of religion, war as well as other significant influences over communities over time. If you are, like me, a fan of Phillipa Gregory then these might float your boat too 😊

Phillipa Gregory's splendid new monograph tells the story of our history in a completely reimagined way …. through the lives of women. Not heroes, leaders, or queens, but normal everyday women, each of them splendid and important, shaping the world we live in today with. Perhaps the best thing about this book is its new way of looking at our history with, as Gregory herself puts it, ‘as little mention of men as possible’. Attending her talk at @barnfield_theatre, I watched this witty and tenacious woman take us through her research, shedding light on events which had hitherto been unknown to me. The mention of the revolt at St Nicolas Priory during the Reformation was particularly thrilling. But what made this event special, and what made Phillipa Gregory shine brightest was the questions and answers section. Unfortunately, the first question was asked by a man who thought he was oh so terribly amusing. However, in a happy turn of events he was quickly shut down by the woman of the hour (It should be noted that no other man raised their hand). All other questions raised interesting points, each one becoming more contemplative about the state of the world in which we live and why women still struggle to obtain an equal footing. The answer to this, Gregory says, is twofold. Firstly, global capitalism must end, and second, that women must work together within a sisterhood. It does not matter if one woman rises, that does nothing (and has been known to set women back), all need to push for a change, all working together, or else nothing will happen. To end, Gregory left us with a superb thought. After discussing the plight of an audience member who is a working mother with what sounds to be an unsupportive partner, Gregory insists that women must demand their rights, that men do their part. That ‘the struggle for liberation is in the dishes.’ And so there ends my first, and most likely only theatre review. #englishhistory #phillipagregory #theater #review #women #bookstagram

Normal Women Book Event! ✨ On Monday I went to see Phillipa Gregory speak about her new book, Normal Women in Kings Lynn Corn Exchange! It was so interesting to learn about her research for the book and learn many things about women in English history that were lost due to the preference of men. I found her a very inspirational woman and am looking forward to reading this book, and many of her others! 📚Book Recommendations 6📚 From the bestselling author of THE WHITE QUEEN - the first three novels of her Tudor Court series: THE CONSTANT PRINCESS, THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL, THE BOLEYN INHERITANCE THE CONSTANT PRINCESS tells the story of Henry VIII’s first wife, Katherine of Aragon, the Spanish princess raised to be Queen of England and first brought to England to marry Henry’s older brother, Prince Arthur. But when her new husband dies, she must fight for her birthright – and in marrying the now heir to the throne, she must tell the greatest lie… and hold to it. THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL, made famous by the film adaptation, tells the story of the less notorious Boleyn sister, Mary, who catches the wandering eye of the young King Henry VIII. But when he tires of her, she sets out to school her sister, Anne, as a replacement – and before their story is over, the course of English history has been irrevocably changed. Politics and passion are inextricably bound together in this compelling drama. In THE BOLEYN INHERITANCE, the court of Henry VIII is increasingly fearful at the moods of the ageing sick king. With only a baby in the cradle for an heir, Henry must take another wife and the dangerous prize of the crown of England is won by Anne of Cleves. Anne, although fascinated by the glamour of her new surroundings, senses a trap closing around her. Katherine Howard is confident that she can follow in the steps of her cousin Anne Boleyn to dazzle her way to the throne but her kinswoman Jane Boleyn, haunted by the past, knows that Anne’s path led to Tower Green and to an adulterer’s death. #book #bookstagang_bestof2023 #bookstagram #recomended #bookrecommendations #read #nerd #history #fiction #phillipagregory #theconstantprincess #theotherboleyngirl #theboelyninheritance #truckingatnight #bookish

💗 TUDOR TUESDAY 💗 My favourite period of British history will always be the Tudors, with the Stuarts coming in at a close second. ‘My name’s Catherine of Aragon, was married 24 years, I’m a paragon of royalty.
