As a runner I get it. The freedom you feel from being outside can’t be emulated in a gym setting. If you love a certain type of sports, going to classes, or have another active hobby that you really enjoy it’s easier to put your all into that. If you don’t love the gym it’s harder to go. It’s harder to workout. It’s harder to motivate yourself. I get it. But, if you want to progress, if you want to stay injury free (or at least give yourself the best chance), you need a strong foundation. Strength training gives you that foundation. Don’t neglect it. Whatever your sport is - cycling, rowing, running, aerial, pole dancing, hiking, football etc etc. You will do better in all of these if you add some strength training into your fitness routine. As we age, so does the amount of muscle we have (it decreases). Our bone density decreases. We have to offset these natural decreases to stay fit, strong and healthy. Exposing your body to resistance training does this. We can reduce our chance of aches, pains, fraility and injury by building a strong foundation. Strong legs run faster. Pedal faster. A strong and powerful core responds faster to sudden changes in terrain. Strong arms go further. You are, quite literally more capable of doing more. Even adding one or two strength sessions per week can have a big impact on your training. You don’t need to put yourself in one fitness box. I have clients that run marathons, row, cycle, do acrobatics, teach fitness classes, hike, dance, the list goes on. They do all of this along side strength training. ✨ Strength training ✨ Resistance bands and weight training are a beneficial ways to help build and maintain muscle tone and health. Strength training helps to maintain muscle mass, joint function, mobility and balance. There can also be positive effects on systemic physical and mental health. As we age our muscles loose mass and our bones lose density. This leaves us vulnerable to reduced mobility and strength. The risk of fall and subsequent injury increases. The saying use it or loose it applies here. It's easier to maintain muscle health and strength than loose it and have to try and rebuild. Start where you are and build slowly. Working with your bodyweight is a great place to start. You may choose to work up to include resistance bands or weights to help increase muscle load. The Canada health guide recommends 2x 15 minute strength sessions a week for basic maintenance. The last few months I've been working away at my 150 Megan's and part of that was adding in more strength training. My schedules packed so what's worked best for me is a ten minutes of light weights or resistance bands daily. I am definitely not a HIIT or weight workout person since my teenage years. However i'm aware of that after 40 you should increase your muscle mass for a much more effective fat burn, longevity, to prevent osteoporosis and hypertension. So that since last year once or twice i have added my weekly workouts weights which can be on the mat or on the reformer✌🏻 Today's core workout has more burn with the weights. It’s a new year which for many of us means revisiting our goals, routines, habits. For others it might be completely new beginnings, new aspirations and new objectives. For me 2024 is about taking all the goodness of 2023 and building up on it. My physical and mental well-being has been a real focus for me. In September 2022 I joined 6 week strength training challenge with @ash_fitmom as a way to bring regular exercise back into my routine. Since then I did 5 more challenges with Ash and her forever growing @fitmom_society I always knew that if I’m disciplined and stick with the challenges I’ll see great changes in my body and overall fitness. BUT I never realised how much this programme will impact my mental well-being. The daily focus on the mat spills over to increased focus in other areas too. My energy levels have improved massively. My sleep has become more consistent. And above all Ash’s philosophy of: just starting, celebrating small wins, aiming for progress and not perfection, doing just 1% more every day has helped me massively in some darker parts of 2023. We all have these times. The question is what support structure we have when these little buggers creep in. @fitmom_society has been my support structure for sure! This is kinda really hard to post because I’m kinda self conscious about my body, but I just have to say I’m so proud of myself and the progress I’ve made!! It’s only been a month and 5 weeks since I have started weight workout training 2 days a week and made big changes with gaining more muscle and I’ve seen such drastic change improvements in my body. I’m so excited to continue this journey!!! 😃🏋️💪🏻❤️ I’ve gained a lot of muscle and this is just the beginning of focused intensity and I did it and will continue to keep improving!! The workouts are fun, uplifting, challenging, muscle burning, intense, and also totally doable!!!! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 I feel alive and a lot better than ever. I feel confident, comfortable, and strong!! Well today ended up with a short 10 min weight workout! When you get older like me you will find that you listen to your body and when it says ouch when you move it!! You figure out how to still get a workout in but make it count as well as still moving you into the direction of your health goals!! I learned as I got older it is not as much as the length of workout it is the key movement of workout. What you did when you where in your 20-30-40 is not going to what you do in your 50!! Switching it up makes your body work more because well it is not sure what is coming next so it grabs into what you are doing and focuses. It is call tricking your body.. it was very interesting when I started doing it!! So look at workouts for your age you will truly benefit from that more then just doing the same thing ALL the time!! 🍑 HOW TO GROW YOUR GLUTES 🍑 or just muscles in general 🫶🏼 👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼 1. TRAIN HARD: train heavy! Progressive overload and training to failure is absolutely essential for muscle growth. If you’re lifting the same weight every week, or just lifting easy-to-do weights, you won’t become stronger! Push your boundaries, reach failure as much as you can and increase your weights/reps weekly if you can. Your face should look like mine when I do RDLs (in pain x🤣) 👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼 2. FUEL YOUR BODY: eat your food, food is fuel !! Now you can grow muscle in a calorie deficit (known as cutting), HOWEVER, this is the slowest option. You will gain muscle faster if you’re eating at maintenance, and even FASTER if you’re eating in a calorie surplus (also known as bulking) 💪🏼 if you’re not eating enough food, your body won’t be able to give 100% in your workouts, and you won’t be able to train to failure like you should 💪🏼 👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼 3. PROTEIN: can be an obvious one, but absolutely VITAL. Protein repairs the muscles that are torn throughout exercise, and help them maintain & grow!! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 Now the 3 points above the fundamentals to growing muscle. But there are some supplements that can help you grow muscle, Creatine being a great example. ‘Phosphocreatine’ (PCr) naturally occurs in the muscles, but these stores are limited, therefore supplementing with 3g of Creatine a day consistently can enhance performance (thank u uni 🤣) ‼️‼️‼️‼️ If you are taking part in a ‘bulking’ phase, you will naturally gain fat as well as muscle. This is natural and not something to be disheartened over! Rachel called in for her yearly consult yesterday which is included in her premium Fit2B membership. She quickly informed me that she has children between the ages of 1 and 6 years old, and she's super tired all the time. She did our basic diastasis routines when she had her baby, but she has a lot going on and hasn't felt motivated to do much else for a while. She has one leg shorter than the other, so her hip and lower back often bother her. She also shared that her neck hurts sometimes, too, but if she does our "Walking Routine" it helps the discomfort and headache go away. "That's a lot, and I know we don't have much time, but can you help me?" "Yes!" I told her. "Here's the thing, all of the issues you shared can be approached with movement, and when you approach your workout as a 'help' and 'soother' for your aches and pains and not as a punishment, you'll find motivation." I recommended the following routines for her based on further questions I asked her: -Lower Back Love -Hippy Yoga -Hipster Chair Moves -Pelvic Floor Connections I also directed to her to our "14 Days to A Better Neck" course which is included in her premium membership and which will provide a lot of short videos she can utilize in addition to her original favorite, our Walking Workout.
