I can't believe it's been over A YEAR since I last posted on here!!! 🤯 Ever since the pandemic hit, I've been in and out of reading slumps because I have ZERO attention span for things these days! 🎈🎈🎈🎈this novel by #rachelbarenbaum @barenbaumrachel was very well written with good plot turns and deep character involvement, but I thought it needed a little editing, was about 50 pages too long. Set in #russia in 1914, WW1, the story is about Miri and Vanya, brother and sister. She is a surgeon and he is a physicist. He is trying to prove a theory on gravity and light, so he travels with Miri’s fiancé to see an eclipse and photograph it for his research. Do you prefer the historical fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, or family drama genre? Well, you get all four genres with Rachel Barenbaum’s new book Atomic Anna. Not only do we get different time periods from the 40s, 60s, to 80s, but also different points of view. Manya/Molly travels into 1986 to warn her mother Anna about Chernobyl. Then the story backtracks to 1961 to Philadelphia where Molly is grappling with her adoptive parents’ secrecy regarding her birth mother Anna. Molly copes by drawing her own comic series featuring her birth mother as Atomic Anna. We learn the back story of Anna’s scientific genius back in 1938. The time travel was really interesting in that it felt like realistic fiction. When the “unified field theory” was explained in the book it actually made sense. We then find Anna searching for her granddaughter Raisa in the 80s. The long line of scientific genius within the female line of the family was so wonderful in that they each had a different area of expertise. The power of each character is made greater by the other characters. As you time travel through the pages, empathy and respect builds for all three women. This was such a nice read that felt dramatic but also fulfilling. I felt smarter by the end and the science and math discussed in the story are still an enigma to me. Atomic Anna puts a realistic yet dramatic spin to women in STEM pioneers. 𝒜 𝐵𝑒𝓃𝒹 𝒾𝓃 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝒮𝓉𝒶𝓇𝓈 by Rachel Barenbaum ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It’s completely ironic… I picked this book up from the library not knowing what it was. Literally, no clue! It was a “blind date with a book” and the clues I had were history and science. Come to find out, it’s a WWI era love story that takes place in Russia. The irony, however, was that the day I blindly picked up a book about wartime in Russia in 1914, was the exact same day Russia attacked the Ukraine in 2022. I devoured this book! I find that the market, if you will, is almost over saturated with WWII novels, and there isn’t nearly as many options about WWI. Now, that’s not me complaining..I personally find both wars to be fascinating! I also loved how Einstein’s theory of relativity was brought into play in this book! So interesting! 🌟REVIEW🌟 "This is at once an epic love story and a heart-pounding journey across WWI-era Russia, about an ambitious young doctor and her scientist brother in a race against Einstein to solve one of the greatest mysteries of the universe" (Goodreads). A BEND IN THE STARS by Rachel Barenbaum There's certainly plenty of tension and drama (and violence) in this book as you get a taste of what it could be like to be Jewish in Russia in 1914. Not a lot of options were available and all of them dire. It's funny how great a land mass Russia is in size, yet there was no point when reading this that I was made to feel like the characters could hide anywhere and be safe for long. Part of the drama, of course, is that you realize someone (or multiple someones?) is going to die, and you can't quite pinpoint who it might be until it actually happens. There is one character, from the very beginning, you know is going to survive, but that's not really a comfort when there are a handful of others you grow to care about, too. I have some thoughts about the length of this book not being totally necessary or utilized to the greatest effect. This does stand as a solid piece of historical fiction, regardless. I picked up: 📖 The Kite runner: I honestly can’t believe I haven’t read it yet. 📖 Opioid, Indiana: This is one where something about the cover and the title font drew me to it. Čítali ste niekedy knihu, ktorá mala všetky predpoklady, aby sa Vám páčila, ale nakoniec to dopadlo úplne inak? Presne toto sa mi stalo pri knihe Tajomstvo hviezd. Príbeh z prostredia Prvej svetovej vojny, Rusi prenasledujú Židov, jemná romantika a dej plný akcie a napätia. Veľmi som chcela, aby sa mi páčila. Ale žiaľ, tentoraz to nevyšlo.😞 Ani poriadne neviem popísať, prečo to tak bolo. Úvod bol celkom zaujímavý, ale potom, keď som stránky otáčala a stále sa neozvala tá zvedavosť, ktorú pri čítaní väčšinou pociťujem, začala som sa znepokojovať. Postavy - popísané, ako inteligentné bytosti, po väčšinu príbehu asi mozog niekde stratili. U mňa to je tak, že ak sú postavy zle napísané, tak aj celkový čitateľský zážitok sa o dosť zníži. V tomto prípade Miri - lekárka a jej brat Váňa - prosím pekne vedec, robili jedno nelogické rozhodnutie za druhým. Jasné, nikto nie je dokonalý a navyše k tomu vojna robí z ľudí naozaj divné kreácie, ale toto bolo na mňa priveľa. A navyše si ku mne nevedeli nájsť cestu. Žiadne emócie, žiadny vzťah, jednoducho to boli len postavy na papieri, ktoré prežívali svoj príbeh a mňa sa to nijako nedotklo. Nemôžem si pomôcť, ale keď som už čítala Folleta, toto mi popri ňom príde ako slabý odvar. Chýbali mi tam tie detaily, na ktoré je Follet odborník. Nápad príbehu bol zaujímavý, ale to spracovanie bolo už o dosť slabšie. Mám pocit, že takýchto príbehov je tu xy a žiaľ, tento tiež nevytŕčal z radu.. Ak máte chuť na historickú oddychovku, plytší romantický príbeh, po knihe kľudne siahnite. Ale ja už od týchto príbehov čakám oveľa viac. Ak ste na tom podobne ako ja, odporúčam Vám napríklad Folleta (a ak máte nejaký další tip, sem s ním😊). #fandomky

The pandemic combined with the tense political climate had me reaching a breaking point. Although it seemed that there was little I could do to change the situation, an idea came to mind. I could bring together a group of women from various backgrounds who could connect over a universal language: the love of a good book. Moreover, I could engage excellent authors who were struggling as their long awaited book tours where cancelled month after month. The idea was simple: pick a book by a Jewish women author, interview her on my podcast and discuss the book at a book club meetup over Zoom. We are six months in and I currently have a wonderful community of book lovers who gather monthly to support Jewish woman authors. 📖BOOK REVIEW📖 . I managed to finish one last book before the year ended! A Bend in the Stars by Rachel Barenbaum is a historical fiction novel set in Russia at the start of WW1. The story revolves around two siblings, Miri and Vanya, as they attempt to secure safe passage to America for their family. Vanya, a brilliant physicist, sets off across the country to obtain a picture of the 1914 eclipse so he can complete Einstein's work on relativity. The picture of the eclipse and Vanya's mathematical equations are his family's ticket to America. However, when Miri finds out Vanya may be in danger, she sets off across the country to find him and ensure his safety. . I would rate this novel 9/10 ⭐. This was by far one of my favorite historical fiction novels I've ever read. The character development was rich and by the end of the novel I felt like I knew the characters personally. I loved the adventure in this novel and how Barenbaum thought through the details so the pieces of the story fit together so well. The ending was so satisfying - something I love in a book! I was especially impressed that this was Barenbaum's debut novel. I can't wait to read her future work! Overall, I would definitely recommend this novel. This book has a little bit of everything: science, adventure, war, and love. . Are you a historical fiction fan? The frozen snow slices at my bare ankles. The last of my stockings are pulled over Ombeline’s little arms, a pitiful defense against the bitter cold, but at least she has another layer beneath her tattered coat. We’ve dwindled down to mere flesh and bone. Her brown eyes stare up at me, desperate to find relief from the horror that surrounds us. The Nazi’s left our little village a pile of flaming rubble. We were the only family left and after last night we had no choice but to run. The woods are unnaturally still along the railway tracks. Even the trees seem to be holding their breath. The German’s don’t speak but I can hear the swish of their pants and scuffle of their absurdly polished leather boots. We just need a train, any train, to roll through. I’m confident we’ll be able to hide at least for a short while. Ombeline hasn’t spoken a word since the war showed up on our front doorstep. A blessing in disguise. She won’t make a sound when we find a place to hide on board. Ombeline leans into the side of my leg, her tiny body trembling. She doesn’t whine but I know she’s exhausted and starving. I muster a weak smile as if to say, “hold on, sweet girl.” Then I feel it, a low rumbling beneath the packed snow. With each passing second the rumbling turns into the grinding of wheels and the puffing of smoke. A train. I lift Ombeline into my arms and shift her to my right side. She weighs no more than a loaf of bread. The train rolls into view at a slow and steady pace. “Close your eyes” I whisper into Ombeline’s ear. I peak out from behind the tree and see the last car is almost to us. Tired: Einstein’s theory of relativity, wired: Vanya’s theory of relativity 💫 A Bend in the Stars follows the story of Miri and her brother Vanya as they travel across Russia in time to capture a solar eclipse that is the key to completing Einstein’s theory of relativity. Several obstacles get in their way, such as the breakout of World War I and lots of nefarious characters chasing them down. I would recommend for fans of historical fiction- only criticism is that it was a bit long and there were a lot of components to follow. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ and a half!
A Bend in the Stars by Rachel Barenbaum . This tale set in Russia around World War I takes you on a beautifully immersive journey across themes of courage, oppression, science and love. . It is incredible how a book can encompass so much and not seem overindulgent but that’s exactly what the author has done. There are a lot of things happening yes, but ultimately you root for these characters and desperately wish for them an ending they deserve. . I absolutely adored the understated yet astounding passion that the characters had. For each other, for their work and for their survival. . Luckily, booksellers don't blink twice at a women yelling that a book is her friend. It was the first time I met Maxwell @maxwell.gregory2018 at the Lake Forest Bookstore, and I felt the need to explain. "Rachel Barenbaum, the author of A BEND IN THE STARS, is my friend and today is her pub day!!!" Then, Maxwell held up the book, showed it to another bookseller, pointed at me, and said, "This is her friend." The other bookseller said, "She's gorgeous. What a beautiful cover."
