The Bankers Wife by Cristina Alger ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ When my book club decided to read a thriller I was less than… thrilled 😂 I don’t like scary things and hearing the word thriller made me think scary but this book was not that at all. I read it over the course of 3 hours in one sitting and it was great!! I found it exciting, interesting and suspenseful. It was a quick read and fun for me to read something a bit different than usual! I never thought of it as being so dangerous, but based on the body count of this book, it's a world I'll plan to stay out of (you know, in case I ever become a criminal mastermind and need to hide my millions somewhere). There are smart and persistent women who won't give up, one a journalist and one the wife of a banker. Lots of times we don't know who to trust, who's lying and who has ulterior motives. I listened to this on audio, and I have to say, I'm not sure I loved the narration. There was something almost nice and hesitant about it, which seemed at odds with the women in the story. 3.5⭐️ ⬆️𝘕𝘰𝘸: Somehow, I ended up reading two books that feel very summer-y. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗼, which takes place in the Adirondacks in the summer, and 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗮𝗸𝗲, set on a so far unnamed Caribbean island. Forgoing this week’s Friday catch up in favor of a couple mini reviews of two thrillers with the word wife in the title 😅 THE YOUNGER WIFE | I love a Sally Hepworth novel; she combines family drama and intrigue brilliantly. This one is no exception! It was a perfect brain break weekend read with a delightful audiobook performance. It is not groundbreaking, the ending is disappointing, and it hasn’t particularly stayed with me but not all books need to! THE MOTHER-IN-LAW is still my fav of hers! THE BANKER’S WIFE | I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller, which follows two women separately uncovering the truth of a scandalous crime. The strength of this thriller is its uniqueness- it doesn’t follow the same structure as many thrillers I’ve read - and it kept me on my toes! I loved the European setting, too. I enjoyed getting 3 POV from the female perspective. I think my overall biggest issue was how the banking industry and security of it was portrayed. Book reviews! The Vanishing Half tells the story of the Vignes Twins. It was such a poignant, moving, touching, heartbreaking, and important book. The writing was beautiful and lyrical. I could not put to down. The story is still with me and I finished it two weeks ago. I will definitely be reading more from Brit Bennett. The Banker’s Wife was an interesting book. This book tells the story of Annabel whose’s husband dies in an airplane crash with another woman. Her husband was a respected banker at a very prestigious firm. Annabel is so confused and still grieving but she decides to investigate his death. Meanwhile another young woman, Marina, is asked to investigate a group of people who may or may not be doing illegal things at the same firm. The story goes back in forth between these two woman as well as Zoey. The story all ties together at the end and you will be like 😱. I loved the ending so much. It ended perfectly to me. Both Annabel and Marina were two badass women who would stop at nothing to get to the bottom of the truth and I am here for it! Seriously, bring on more novels with female leads being as strong and independent as the women in this novel! • This story is told in multiple POV’s, which is literally my favorite. I found myself on the edge of my seat, flying through the pages to figure out exactly what was happening and how Marina and Annabel were connected, if they were at all. I cannot give too much detail as that would ruin the entire plot. I loved the ending of this book. It was everything I needed and felt that it was executed perfectly. • If you haven’t read this book, I would definitely recommend it. I was lucky enough to have been lended this book from a coworker who loved it and I am so happy we both felt the same about it! Quiet evening with an awesome story (only 1/3 through it at this point as I only started reading it during lunch time earlier today) but it was soooo gooood! I originally got this novel knowing that Amazon Studios is gonna turn it into a thriller-whodunit-tvdrama (exactly my thing!!) starring none other than Rosamund Pike‼️ And so I was truly sad knowing that Amazon cancelled the whole project *two weeks ago* because of the pandemic - as the story would involve filming in Geneva, Bern, Paris, London, New York... Book Review!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Girls Like us is a crime suspense novel that follows Nell, an FBI agent, as she heads back to her hometown after her dad, a homicide detective, dies in a motorcycle accident…..she then finds herself involved in a local investigation when a woman is found dead. I LOVE books with badass female protagonists 💪🏼, and Nell definitely filled those shoes! I don’t remember the last time I read a book in less than 24hrs. Once I started it I couldn’t put it down. The premise of this book surrounds the lives of those in private banking and offshore accounts. At the beginning, a private banker goes missing in a plane crash in the Swiss Alps and his wife is left questioning whether there is motive behind this tragic accident. I especially enjoyed that I could play out the entire book in my head while reading it and it felt like I was watching a great action movie! My only wish is that the chapters were a tad shorter as it would have kept up the excitement and momentum that the story truly had. It has been a hot minute since I’ve had an adult book rec for you, but this one will make up for the overdose of all my recent classroom posts... After listening to The Banker’s Wife by @cristina.alger, my husband insisted I listen to it too. When he said it was about offshore bank accounts in Switzerland, I was skeptical that I could get into it... But, you guys, I absolutely 100% loved it! I describe this book to people as a combination of @johngrisham’s The Firm and @julieclarkauthor’s The Last Flight! This novel is mysterious, suspenseful, and full of corruption and twists (and even a little romance!) There are a lot of moving parts and several characters to keep track of, so it does take some focus. I’d highly recommend listening to the audiobook of this one because the narrator did such a good job with various accents.
