It’s 2050, a decade after a heatwave that killed four hundred million across the Persian Gulf, including journalist Marcus Tully’s wife. Now he must uncover was the disaster natural? Or is the weather now a weapon of genocide? This could’ve been the sci-fi political thriller of the year, if only the main character had a bit more personality than his wife’s death. For me, this book started out very slow, which is something I hate in books but I always try to push through, even though for a lot of chapters it felt like we were reading a lot but learning a whole lot of nothing. Don’t get me wrong, the author is clever and the book is full of twists that no one really is going to expect, but we ended up getting a last chapter jam packed with answers that honestly left me staring at the wall for a couple of minutes till I could prosess what had happened.

Weaver Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Read: 06/01/2023 - 29/03/2024 2024 book: 15 Thank you @literallypr for my #gifted copy This is the kind of book you need to binge read because there’s so much going on! It started off a little slow for me, mainly because it was very much focussed on the political elements of the plot, but after arriving in New Carthage, the pace picked up to the point of not being able to put this down. It was a mix of Sci-fi, politics and thriller/mystery/crime detective (I’m not very good at distinguishing genres so have them all). Although some of the science and political elements went way over my head (I was the same with Brave New World), I loved the intricacies of the plot and the complexities of the characters. Throwing AI into the mix really ensures that you can’t trust anyone or anything, just when you think you’ve got it figured out you realise you’re way off base. It’s been a long time that I’ve been taken by surprise by the plot twist. When I say I didn’t see it coming, I really mean I DIDN’t SEE IT COMING! That’s the best feeling for a thriller or crime fiction. I did enjoy this audiobook. I love the cover. Different. I did love the narrator. The different voices he did. I did find it slow to start with but soon I got lost in it. Lots of twists and turns. I did like Tully character. I wasn't sure about the others. Artificial Intelligence was an important factor in this book. It's something different. It was like I was watching what was happening. It’s described as “too close for comfort” and that about nailed it for me. It takes place after a heatwave that killed 400 million people and Tully is trying to figure out if it was natural or planned. It’s also about how widely the human population would rely on AI to save us because they are in the middle of an election for world dictator and one of the candidates is the first ever AI politician. The whole world dictator thing scares me, AI or not. It was fast paced, easy to read and kept me engaged the whole time. It was truly chilling. I really enjoyed the plot twists and all of the unpredictable characters. I don’t read a ton of sci-fi so if I can understand it, I consider it “sci-fi light” if you’re someone who tends to get scared off by those type of books. I have already read and enjoyed the physical hardback of Artificial Wisdom and was excited to reread in the medium of audiobook. Artificial Wisdom is a pacy thriller that deals with a lot of ethical questions which are particularly relevant to us today. Most obviously Climate Change and AI. The one thing I loved on my first reading was how we are kept guessing to the end on what is happening and why. You can view my original review here. On my re-read I really noticed how well Weaver makes us stop and think as readers about what is happening and bigger questions about humanity, climate and general philosophy and ethical questions. I found the narration by Steven Pacey generally really well done and helped immerse me in the story a bit more. It was nice to hear different accents for different characters but for me I did find some a bit stereotyped sometimes but that was purely personal taste and didn’t spoil my overall enjoyment of the narration. The novel remains a firm 5 star and the narration a solid 4.5 (only half a star off five due to my personal preference on tone/voices of characters). This remains a book I will happily re-read again and again. It felt like a story of warning, where the world could go. But at the same time, it didn’t feel preachy. The mystery seemed simple at first, but layers and layers kept unfolding. And so much character growth! Tully, Livia, and October were all interesting and realistic characters with flaws and I couldn’t help but root for them. Overall, Artificial Wisdom was an enthralling read. I only wish there was more—the ending felt a little rushed and left me with more questions. I’ll definitely be looking for more from this author! My Review: ARTIFICIAL WISDOM is a consuming futuristic sci-fi mystery. Tully lost his wife and unborn child in the Tabkhir event, an unbelievable heatwave that killed millions. While some believe the event was natural, there was something unexpectedly unnatural about it. As an investigative journalist, he is particularly intrigued when an anonymous source brings him evidence that Tabkhir was decidedly not natural, and Tully cannot help but go down the rabbit hole. At the same time, candidates for the dictatorship have been narrowed down to two - a corrupt former American president and an AI created to govern that the sister of a member of his investigative team created. As Tully investigates, he finds the things he is learning to have important implications on this impactful election. This was an absolutely consuming and fast-paced read. The book read like a movie, and it was easy to picture the scenes as you travel through them. The technological advancements are huge with some large leaps between now and then, feeling like the sci-fi future movies love to imagine. Additionally, the story speculates about the future we are heading towards with regards to climate change, natural disasters, and the ways that countries have reacted to them. This was particularly interesting and insightful, with clear parallels from the present. Much of the story carries an element of mystery as the evidence builds on the investigation Tully and his team are doing. It was quite thrilling as they uncover secrets and leads. The intrigue definitely kept the story moving quickly and made it tough to put down. The book really speaks to the growing concerns of our time, particularly regarding climate change and AI. Other themes around politics, corruption of power, family, secrets, intent and morality, and grief/loss were also really thought-provoking. 👇👇👇👇

The author plays on the fears of humanity, by using the real threat of today, to show a world where desperation becomes a driving force. The protagonists, Tully and October, are well-developed characters who are a force to be reckoned with. Tully, a broken man in search of the truth about his wife, will do anything to discover the truth. October is a by-the-book cop who also wants the truth but by completely honest means. As a team, they lead the reader down a series of paths that may or may not lead to the truth. Not only does the author develop a detailed plot with hard-hitting prose, he takes the reader down multiple rabbit holes of possible answers. Just when you think you have figured out what is going on, and who the villain is, a new clue emerges that throws your whole conclusion out the window. It’s cleverly written and not easily solved. I enjoyed this novel and the what-if’s it presented. ░B░o░o░k░ ░R░e░v░i░e░w░ [Ad Pr Product] Artificial Wisdom by Thomas R Weaver I was part of the @lovebookstours readalong for this book. I wasn’t too sure what to expect from this debut novel but I was surprised, as it is definitely not my usual go-to genre being a mixture of sci-fi, dystopian, politics, futuristic murder mystery. I did struggle initially to get into the storyline, which is set in the near future. Addressing the impact of climate change on humanity , it certainly gave much to think about in how the world might be, and the outcomes. The use of AI also gave much food for thought – would you trust this to run the world? The characters are pretty realistic and there was plenty of backstory surrounding them. 📚February Wrap-Up📚 February turned out to be a much greater reading month than I’d expected. There was much reflection on the lives of women, from the second world war to the cold war (The Wartime Book Club, The London Bookshop Affair, and the marvelously witty Jane and Prudence), and spanning different time frames (Hindsight). Girls came of age in the 1970s (The List of Suspicious Things) and the 90s (The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne), and a contemporary queer brother and sister found themselves in the warm and funny Greta and Valdin. Crime was constant from the golden age (Impact of Evidence, The Secret Adversary), to today (Every Trick in the Book) and in the future (Artificial Wisdom). I’m always interested in abuses of power, explored in Error of Judgement, the fictional worlds of Gaslight and Sisterhood, and to some extent in The Winners (and, of course, I was sad to say goodbye to Beartown). Here are my final questions for the Artificial Wisdom readalong! My review for this was posted on the 15th if you wanted to know my thoughts! Question 11 I have not been set up or scammed in the literal sense of the word. I am, however, forced to show up to a 9-5 job on the daily, and I am painfully charged taxes every month. So, I guess you could say yes, I am constantly being scammed. Question 12 This one is a hard one for me because I am strongly against the idea of a dictator at all. I don’t think anyone can be trusted to be the literal leader of the entire world, whether human or AI. However, if I had to choose between the 2 I would say that Solomon might be the best choice in this situation, he would be able to make the hard decisions that are needed and he seems to actually care about the future of the world and preserving/saving the Earth. More AW questions! Question 8 I don’t think military tech should be a thing in the first place, and I don’t think anyone should be ‘trusted’ to create it. I think an AI in this instance would be as trustworthy as a regular human. Question 9 As someone who finds great joy in buying, holding, smelling and reading physical books - this thought makes me sad. But as someone who cares about the environment, it can be seen as a positive. The lack of paper needed would be a great thing I suppose, I see a lot of books get thrown out rather than donated and removing physical books would stop this. So although my heart screams NO at the idea of losing physical books, my head thinks it wouldn’t be too bad. Question 10 I would go back to my authentic life. Artificial Wisdom - Review I was lucky enough to be part of this readalong. I really enjoyed this book, it's not something I would usually go for myself to be honest as it focuses around AI and I'm not one to fully understand or feel comfortable around technology, it's a surprise I can manage to work my phone and kindle 😂🫣 It's amazing to think the advancements in technology and the way our world is constantly evolving. Because honestly, what ever I write doesn't seen ENOUGH to describe this book! Firstly how is this a DEBUT??? Its unbelievable. This book had me hooked from the start. And somehow it was impossible to put down and not keep thinking about. I totally ignored the #readalong schedule for this and though I started reading later than planned in the month, I then binge read it over a few days. I loved this book, everything about it. The issues faced and the dystopian world created is outstandingly believable and well developed. The fact that it's set in the very near future, 2050, and deals with issues that are SO relevant at the moment and could so easily be our future is scarily captivating. A world destroying itself with climate issues and an AI running for dictator to rule over all the states. And in the midst of this we have Tully investigating his wife's death in a 'heatwave' that wiped out millions. And his team of investigative news crew members add that extra level of plot line to the mix. I loved the dynamics of the characters. The way the different story lines interwove and there was so much going on. It was quite complex at the start to see the connections but then WOW. A murder mystery, politics, corruption and twists I didnt expect. Swipe for synopsis etc. And that ending!! So glad there is a second book in the pipeline 🤞 Can not wait. **Artificial Wisdom by Thomas R. Weaver** “That was the thing about the truth; it only came out when the cost of lying became too high.” Entering into the 2050 that Weaver has created you are forced into an election fight between a human and an artificial intellect, questioning the use of geoengineering and scrabbling to solve a murder. The first 10 or so chapters are spent world and character building and then before you know it there’s a murder to solve and everything is happening. I enjoyed this book for the most part, I did find the first chunk a little slow but by the half way part I was really into it. In a world that is becoming faster and more reliant on technology, and with all the technological advancements that I personally do not believe humans have advanced quickly enough to be able to handle or understand fully what is being created. In the world that Tom builds in Artificial Wisdom, the world has already succumbed to disaster from climate change and now relies heavily on AI to run it which is set in the not so distant future -2050. The book starts off with Marcus Tully who is desperately searching for his lost wife following a disastrous explosion but fast forward 10 years and someone might hold the answers to her disappearance – with the help of the advancement of AI. However in the now future, there are elections taking place with the current politician being that of an AI. During Tully’s investigations he uncovers some secret truths that forces him to understand the pros and cons of the advancement of AI in the world you live in and that not everything is what it appears to be to the eye. I loved it. The blurb really appealed to me initially as I enjoy the dystopian and futuristic genres, the added element of climate change made this book a lot more relevant also. It started how I expected, but then took off in a direction I didn’t anticipate and I was hooked. The characters are well written, relatable and realistic, each with their own backstory and development arc. The author was especially skilled at writing Tully’s torment over Zainab as he searches for, and ultimately battles with, the truth of what happened to her. The author expertly balances description, dialogue and action, intertwining some amazing thought-provoking themes - I could picture Solomon clearly and could feel myself really starting to believe this could actually be something humanity is faced with in the future. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about how I would vote. While set in the future, there are parallels to today’s world with extreme weather events, climate-change deniers, social media influencers, politics swimming in corruption. It makes the book relevant, and its plot believable. The writing flows well and sets a good pace with building suspense, throwing in the odd curveball... and the ending?! I thought I’d guessed it but wow, I was blindsided. I would certainly recommend, and not just for fans of dystopian or futuristic fiction. I’d urge anyone to give this one a go. I thought when I first started reading this book, in our readalong email request, I was intrigued because it is within a time frame where I would be living so would it be realistic or far fetched like we see in films. When I first started reading the book, I won’t lie, I really struggled with it. It just wasn’t keeping me engaged and there were bits i struggled to keep up with purely because it wasnt engaging with me but then, all of a sudden stuff started happening and found I really couldnt put it down. Everything was clicking into place but things i really didnt expect and then the last few chapters for me through everything I had thought out the window and now im reeling and don’t what to think, who to believe and know where its going. I really hope there is a Book 2 because I need to know more. If you like technology and what our future could be like, I highly recommend this book. It’s quite terrifying that this books seems more and more a reality when you think about it, just look at the apple vision pro that has been released, i feel like this is literally a big part of this book and is now in real life. Journalist Marcus Tully believes that it wasn’t inevitable – it was ‘pushed’ there from the US – and he has a vested interest in uncovering the truth. His wife Zainab died, carrying their unborn child. Were scientists and politicians using the weather as a weapon of mass destruction? By now, the world will be governed by a single dictatorship, with just one leader. But who will it be? There are two candidates left from the original twenty – the former US president Lawrence G. Lockwood and Soloman, a highly sophisticated ‘artilect’, the first AI politician in the world. Which one would you trust? Imagine Lockwood was Donald Trump or Boris Johnson, but your only other choice is basically a machine, a robot to you and me, however cleverly put together. Review • Artificial Wisdom by Thomas R. Weaver This is a must read for anyone who spends any time at all thinking about the effects of climate change and loves a murder mystery to boot! I was captivated by the technology in this futuristic life because it seems so believable, especially with the references to real life, present day tech like social media which was referred to as historical. The writing was immersive and not so far fetched from reality that it felt like fantasy. I was invested in the characters throughout and with some possibilities still left open, there is scope for another book. They were some out loud gasps and eye rolls from me! With an ever- changing plot and so many twists to the story it was hard to put down and my thoughts changed and changed again about my own feelings surrounding AI playing a part in world politics or even leadership. It definitely left me wondering how much of our daily decisions are already influenced via AI. I’d really like to thank @lovebookstours and @tom_weaver for the opportunity to review this book. In the novel we are transported to 2050, where the climate crisis has damaged Planet Earth to breaking point and the population needs to be united by one sole leader (or dictator). When an AI politician is put up for that role, fierce debate ensues; and when the AI’s creator is assassinated then it’s a true message to say that not everyone is pleased with the prospect of technology taking over. The book uses the first few chapters to find its footing, but as soon as it does, it becomes hard to put down. You get on board with the characters from the off and suspicion darts everywhere - I felt like I was consistently one step ahead of the plot twists until the final stretch. Today, the whole readalong group is coming together to share our final thoughts on the book. I loved the worldbuilding elements that have been carefully considered and created so there’s not too much detail to bog the reader down in hard sci-fi. This makes it an easily accessible book to get into and follow. The cast of characters is great, each with clear flaws and objectives - I enjoyed Randall and his nerdy quirkiness. The hints around Martha’s paranoia were there from the start and built up to a great climax. There’s a clear Agatha Christie influence coming through as clues are revealed and investigated, making for a futuristic whodunnit. It really makes you think about motives and capabilities of those under suspicion. I suspected Haymaker’s involvement because of convenient timing and a few little things he said… but you’ll have to read the book to see if I was correct or not! The climax blindsided me. After the reveal, I felt like I’d seen a magician’s slight of hand trick. It was so satisfying. The scale of the interwoven threads shows a huge mastery of plot by the author. I’d love to read a sequel so we discover the consequences. It’s easily a 5-star read that I look forward to re-reading in the future and would jump at the chance to read anything further by Thomas R Weaver. It’s a world where A.I had become the norm. We follow journalist Tully as he tries to find out the truth about his wife, who died in a horrendous heatwave in the gulf, that killed millions of people. Also while trying to follow the news about the new global leader race, between a human and an A.I, whose creator was murdered, Tully thinks the murder and his wife are connected and is going to find out how! Now I’m not normally a sci-fi reader, nor am I a fan of political reads. BUT WOW, this book was fantastic. I think because it wasn’t just about the politics or the science part, we had a murder mystery thrown in, which just added another layer to the story, a fab one that kept me engaged in the story, it had me questioning everything and I couldn’t put this book down. The way @tom_weaver wrote about the state of the world was brilliant and a little scary! I could really picture it, which made me wonder if our world could in fact end up like that. The characters were written so well, I didn’t trust any of them, but I still found myself rooting for Tully, his situation may have tugged on my heartstrings a little. I loved the whole concept of the A.I in this book, it was so clever. I was guessing throughout the story, who the killer would be, while also trying to guess who the new dictator would be, making me really think about it, would A.I indeed be the better choice for mankind or not? Overall the book turned out to be a favourite, which did suprise me. For someone who doesn’t read sci-fi, if other books of this genre are like this then I can see it being a genre I will read more of. Tom definitely knows how to prep for a sequel. Tom’s created such a big world - even though it’s just our world, it felt more. The concepts are thought provoking, and whilst it isn’t our immediate future, it could well end up there. Each time I thought I’d figured out what was the truth, there’d be another clue or reveal, and I’d be right back to doubting myself. I enjoyed it more as I settled into it and learnt more about the characters and lifestyles - especially when they were in New Carthage, but it really was that ending that peaked it for me. What a curveball, I was not expecting that - I was already surprised by what I thought was the truth, but then for that... wow. Overall, a great read that I felt ramped up as it progressed. I’ve really enjoyed reading this book. New Carthage, a world in a dome, a world ran by AI, a place with VR headsets and politics. A murder occurs, who is responsible and what are their motives? This story really gets you thinking about the future, it is set in 2050, not that far ahead really. I wonder what the future holds for us and if AI could control more in the world for themselves and others? I love Livia and Tully, they are brilliant characters, have a lot to bring to the table. Solomon is an unusual one but still has bits to offer the team. I like the mystery aspect of this, I also like the idea of an egospace, a personal, virtual place you can transport to, somewhere you can materialise things into and be happy in. It sounds amazing and can become anything and anywhere you want. I really enjoyed the future setting. It opens up a world of imagination and makes you think what could be. The story of Zainab brings a whole new level to this book, also more mystery to why what happened, happened. All is not what it seems! Would recommend this and look forward to more from Tom soon! A heatwave kills 400 million people in the Persian Gulf one of which is our main character Tully’s wife. When given some inside information about the event he begins to wonder if the heatwave was due to climate change or something much worse, engineered by man. In a race to find a Global Dictator it comes down to 2 options; former US President Lockwood or Sully who is AI. Who is the best choice? A human who comes with feelings, bias and prejudices or AI which is essentially created by humans? Who really can do the best job in addressing climate change, an issue we very much are facing now. The story really makes you think about the here and now, what’s really happening in our Governments across the Globe and are we our own worst enemy. Tom’s writing is so good, he has a way of immediately pulling you into this new world where AI is common practice. His knowledge around the subject is abundantly clear throughout. Genre: Crime | Thriller | Mystery Pages: 386 My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Firstly, when I started this book I felt completely bombarded with all the different information and details thrown at me in the first few chapters. It threw me off a bit as I felt completely overwhelmed, but I slowed my pace right down and took my time with the rest of the book and as the story progressed I did enjoy it. I enjoyed the murder mystery aspect of the book however I felt, for me, there was too much politics and technical information thrown in to really appreciate it. However, if this is your thing then I’m sure you would love it! I love the idea of being able to meet with people without having to leave the house! However, all other aspects of AI ruling in the future kind of scared me a bit, I’m not sure that I’m ready for that kind of future! Overall, I enjoyed the story and I’m sure all the technological and political people out there would absolutely love it! Answering the questions and seeing everyone else’s answers too. 4.5 ⭐️ AD - PR PRODUCT My thoughts 💭 I really enjoyed this book, it is set in 2050 a futuristic world that seems all too real and that it really could happen. Which honestly, is a pretty scary thought! I wasn’t overly keen on the main character Tully to begin with but as we learned more about him and saw he was just fighting to uncover the truth. I loved this futuristic world the author has created, they have such a vivid imagination. It also showed how AI may evolve and the place it could take in the future. It’s a very thought provoking read. There was so many twists and turns too, ones that were totally unexpected! I’m really hoping that there will be a sequel. If you love a dystopian or sci-fi book with a thriller element then I certainly recommend you check this one out. He’s still reeling from the death of his wife, and when a whistleblower informs Tully that he has information on the events surrounding his wife’s death, he is hell bent on getting to the bottom of it. But things aren’t as simple as they seem, and soon he finds himself, and his team, in the midst of chaos and grave danger. From the very beginning, there is so much going on in this book! Straight away your attention is caught and you know you are in for one hell of a ride. The book is filled with fantastic characters, all with varying personalities and interesting back stories. I’m glad that we got to hear quite a bit about each character as I felt that it let us get to know them in a way that really pulled you into the story. It made you care about each of them in different ways and therefore has you completely invested. There are also many important topics that are relevant in today’s world which feature within. The subject of AI is one of the main focuses, but it is much more advanced than in our world. I think a lot of us are a little afraid of AI, but the possibilities for it are endless, and I liked how Artificial Wisdom shows both the positive and negatives of AI. The topic of climate change and the severity of the situation is something that we are all talking about and Artificial Wisdom gives an idea of the potential outcome of if we continue to destroy our planet. It’s terrifying to think that the world in the book could become a reality, but unfortunately it could unless we act now. It’s been a while since I read a fantasy/ science fiction read that had me invested since chapter one: the dystopian setting, world building, characterisation and the unique plot-line was so well done. My favourite bit about the book was the murder mystery that was included within this story and the concept with engaging discussions of AI. I'm a big sci fi fan, so I really loved the idea of the AI technology being sophisticated enough to be able to function as a politician and trying to lead humanity through what could become the end of the species. It really makes you think about the influence of AI, human nature and free will and I like that it isn't a completely neat ending - it leaves you with some uncomfortable thoughts. The short chapters made this super easy to read, and I liked the changes of perspective so it wasn't all from Tully's POV.
