The Institution by Helen Fields ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book for me, had so much potential. I feel as though it was a slow burner, picked up then plummeted back down! However, the characters and the way the setting of the Institution was developed was very well written. The reviews given on the book both on cover and online were around 5 stars; for me this was not a true reflection of the book. The “twist” at the end felt rushed and I thought this could have been better. But again, I must emphasise that the way Helen Fields portrays the setting of the story and keeps adding to the main character, Connie’s background in a mental health institution was written well. 16 WEEKS UNTIL SWAN SONG! 16 weeks means that I don’t have much time left to finish reading all of Elin’s novels. I expect to finish reading THE BLUE BISTRO today and then I need to get serious about this goal of mine. The way I used to be - Amber Smith ⭐️ For me personally I didn’t like this book at all. I skipped through the majority of it and skimmed the pages after half way. It wasn’t enjoyable for me and to be honest I don’t remember what the book was about. The book had mature themes and started off with a strong story line. After that it was pretty cliche, but this could be because the book is made for young adults and I’m a lot older. The Met Cloisters is a branch of The Met and is a museum dedicated to the art and architecture of the Middle Ages. It was SO beautifully described I could imagine I was there myself. ✨December Book Club Meeting✨ Our December pick was Yellow Wife chosen by @lindsay.andrews and follows an enslaved girl named Pheby. Pheby started her life on a Plantation and ends up at the Devil’s Half Acre where she is exposed to indescribable situations all the while trying to survive. This book is about a woman’s will to do whatever she can to survive and protect her children under horrible conditions. • 🙏🏼We agreed that the book was hard to read, but important to read about the topic of slavery and learning more about black history. ⏩ We felt like the book was very fast paced and didn’t give us enough time to sit and dwell on the tragic events happening. 📃 some of us would have liked the book to be longer so we could get more from the ending, or would like a sequel. 📔We wanted the diary to have more of a part in the end as well. 👴👩🏽 We enjoyed that the book followed the actual life of Rupert Lumpkin & Mary Lumpkin. • Overall, none of us could imagine being in the situation of Pheby and needing to make choices like she did in order to protect and survive. With 2023 coming to a close, I wanted to post a few reminders. Maybe this was the first year you hit your reading goal, and maybe it was the first year you didn’t. 🪓The Perfect Son by Freida Mcfadden🪓 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Mrs. Cass, we were hoping your son could answer a few questions about the girl who disappeared last night..." 🔪There is nothing I love more than an incredibly messed-up thriller. The Perfect Son definitely provided all the page-turning apprehension a good thriller should, when Olivia goes missing all evidence points towards Liam and I absolutely loved it. 🔪This book starts with a massive focus on Erica Cass a mother of two. Erica definitely has a strong opinion of her son, Liam, and although she loves him it is clear she doesn't believe him. 🔪Erica was always an anxious character and you switched between her POV and Olivas which was great for building the tension when you are in her head. I never thought it was Liam because it was too obvious. But still loved the mystery of finding out who kidnapped her. 🔪Frieda's writing is incredible, she is the type of thriller author that makes you go back and forth in your head. One minute you are certain Laim did it then you question yourself. The mystery in the thriller was perfect and the ending tied in perfectly with the concept of the book. 🔪One of her best in my opinion. If you are looking for a fast-paced mystery thriller then look no further. 🪓I would love some thriller recs? 🪓

The time as finally come and I’m finally out my reading slump! I officially finished all of the SJM universe until further notice! I am literally so mad at myself for not reading this series sooner. Completed another 24 hour read-a-thon and these were the books I finished! I love doing these because I can knock so many books off my tbr so quickly. I had some difficultly this time because 2 of the books were just mid for me, which didn’t help the drowsiness. Overall, a good bunch though 🫶🏻 Mini reviews below! 🎧 Motherthing : Ainslie Hogarth ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wilder than I expected, especially the last quarter of the book. Didn’t know this was a weird girl book and was pleasantly surprised. 📱 The Centre : Ayesha Manazir Siddiqi ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fantastic premise, interesting look at different cultures, but really predictable throughout. 📱 With a Vengeance : Freydís Moon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Loved this!! Recently discovered a love for Moon’s writing and this exceeded my expectations. Dark, paranormal romance with spice, tender love, and funny moments. 📖 The Book of Goose : Yiyun Lee ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stunning writing and atmospheric. Heartbreaking story of obsession but I was a tad bit letdown with the ending. 📖 Vladimir : Julia May Jonas ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Very okay book with obsession themes. Felt somewhat lackluster but had decent writing. Ending seemed thrown together last second. 📖 A Luminous Republic : Andrés Barba ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Gripping storytelling and lovely writing. Loved this one too. Atmospheric and somewhat surreal, I was heavily invested. Highly recommend.
It’s been a long time but!! I have a review. "Sparrow" by James Haynes is a gripping novel that delves into the dark underbelly of the fallen Roman Empire. The story's focus on the grim aspects of that era might not suit everyone's taste, and I personally found it to be a challenging read. Yet, the compelling need to uncover the fate of the characters kept me pushing through the intense trials they faced. The novel expertly weaves tales of tribulations that are both graphic and suspenseful, leaving readers guessing about the characters' survival at every turn. However, the ending left me unsatisfied, as I hoped for at least one moment of true peace or happiness for them. If you're seeking a book that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, "Sparrow" will surely deliver. ✨Book Review✨ The Spectacular Pub Date: 6/13/2023 This book was the @readingthroughbookclub pick for August - which gave me a reason to prioritize it on my TBR! I really enjoy the way that Fiona Davis writes historical fiction that is centered around a historical building and a potentially obscure event that happened. The Spectacular is centered around 1950s Radio City Music Hall and the Big Apple Bomber. There’s a dual timeline aspect that is well written and that enhances the storyline in a way that isn’t overwhelming. I listened to the audio and the narration is also very well done! It was the first official month of summer holiday and kicked it off right by joining @readingthroughnaptime #readingthroughreadathon Kinda hit a slump towards the end of the month with some unexpected family crap to deal with and was struggling to finish up Tomorrow X3, so started Love Theoretically and now trying to (ahem) still finish both up. I will today, there are about 70 pages left in each book .. just need to do it. I absolutely adored In A Jam, Nora Goes off Script, and Georgie All the Way. The Four Winds, by Kristin Hannah will never leave my mind. There’s no way I could pick a favorite from this month because each and everyone was something I had been wanting to read and finally was able to do it! Another task that had been on the list was to check out the Libby App. I had Overdrive for ever and it finally expired completely and they made me jump over to Libby, lol. ✨ Saturday Stack ✨ This week, the #readingthroughreadathon hosted by @readingthroughnaptime has helped me prioritize finishing some of my in progress reads…and start a bunch more! This weekend, I’m hoping to finish Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo. I love all of her YA books, and I’m really enjoying her adult debut which is coming out this August. I also just started Oreo, the June @thestackspod bookclub pick which is so inventive and funny. It is so unexpected and bold, two qualities I love in a book. Will I successfully juggle or just read the rest of Oreo today? I don’t think there’s a wrong answer. I have two other books on deck for when the mood strikes. My library hold for Ducks came in, and I am thrilled! I’m also finally starting The Dragon Republic. I frequently start series and never read anything but book one. After raving about The Poppy Wars to my husband, he blew through the trilogy and has been asking me for months to catch up. So book two here I come! 📚 ☀️ S u m m e r T B R ⛱️ This past week I participated in @readingthroughnaptime ‘s #readingthroughreadathon and today is the last day! I read three books (THE FOUR WINDS, UNFORTUNATELY YOURS, & NORA GOES OFF SCRIPT) and listened to three audio books ( KISS MY CUPCAKE, WHEN SPARKS FLY, & STARRY-EYED LOVE).
