First workout post-half marathon 🫶 After the race on Saturday, I took all of yesterday to do nothing and it felt gooood. But this morning I woke up with renewed energy (that could be courtesy of ovu phase) and actually felt excited to hit the gym. I’ll be honest, as training progressed I found myself dreading my lifts, dreading my runs, and just feeling ‘ugh’ every morning when I woke up. When race day came I was almost excited to ‘get it over with’ which wasn’t something I wanted to feel about a goal I’d been working so hard for. By the end of the race, it all felt worth it, and crossing the finish line was an experience that I’ll never forget. I’m already looking forward to future races even though minutes after this one I swore up and down that I would NEVER do that again. But as excited as I am for future races, I’m even more excited to take a break. My current goal is to create a balance between lifting, running, and yoga and try some new things as well. As much as I love following a training program and working towards a goal I also love moving intuitively and listening to my body’s needs. So that’s the plan for now. How I approach my nutrition strategy 👨‍🍳 There’s a lot of misleading information in the industry at the moment. Ultimately, there’s more than one way to skin a cat, as the saying goes. Everyone is different & subsequently preferences will vary from person to person 🤷‍♂️ Personally, there are 4 key principles that I like to consider… - Calories 🔋 - Protein 🥩 - Micronutrients 🥦 - Enjoyment 😁 My advice, is to keep it simple. You can go down a rabbit hole trying to find the ‘perfect diet’. In reality, if you do not enjoy the foods that you are consuming, you simply will not stay on track in the long-term. From experience, over-complication leads to stress & obsession, which eventually results in a poor relationship with food ❌ Keep It Simple 🫡

Sunday I competed in the Illinois State Weightlifting Championships and I had one of the best weightlifting competitions of my life! Not in the sense that I hit every lift - but I had fun, I didn’t worry about my weight or food, and I was smiling after every lift (even the ones I missed).⁣ ⁣ I remember when I would be so stressed leading up to a competition because I would be training 5-6x a week, cutting weight, meticulously tracking my calories, sitting in a sauna to cut the last bit of weight, and neurotically watching what the other girls in my weight class were lifting. I would show up at the competition and weigh-in just to eat so much food I would make myself sick. I would compete and then spend the rest of the day eating as much as I could - because I knew I would have to go right back to restricting my calories the next day.⁣ ⁣ Flash forward to this past weekend I ate food before I even weighed in, I was relaxed and happy, and ate food like it was any other day. Saturday I even went to a friend’s 30th birthday party and had deep dish pizza! I would never have done that before without being insanely stressed. After I competed I went home, relaxed on the couch and ate normally. I started my Monday off like it was any other Monday without the stress of “needing to get back on my diet”. ⁣ ⁣ Not only did I open heavier than I ever had on Sunday but I even added 2kgs to my overall total. I’m honestly the most proud of my misses this past weekend. Before when I would attempt a lifetime PR I would be a total headcase and almost freak myself out before the lift. Multiple people told me how calm I looked, and how before I lifted it just looked like I was having fun - because at the end of the day that is why I lift…to have fun.⁣ Snatch: 63, 66, 69X⁣ Clean and Jerk: 75, 78(PR), 81X⁣ ⁣ I train 3x a week and I am still consistently improving - you don’t have to kill yourself to see results ESPECIALLY when your hobby doesn’t pay the bills.⁣ ⁣ A HUUUGE thank you to my entire squad who helped me prep:⁣ @team_variant_wl @joenelsondpt @jenniferrsharp @hansonexpress @counselingcenterofgrayslake @illinois_weightlifting

These may be more appropriate for some sports compared to others but are good general guides. Massively lat focused workout today they feel on fire 🔥 Started out on emom squat clean singles-no video Then emom pendlay row singles 120kg working upto a Ramped 140kg-video (Using these to teach body to keep lats engaged past the knee on the squat clean, I sometimes let the bar drift too far away from the body when I transition past the knee)👍 Then some nice work rest intervals on ski-erg 10 second and 20 second-video working upto a minute and back down for 20 mins 💪 Running on 5-6 hour sleep as my second son was born but I get that at work anyway so I'm not any more tired than usual and still managing to get the hard work done 🔥 Everything I do i program myself and the results speak for themselves👏 31 year old, working 45-60 hours per week, 7 year old son every weekend,a 5 day old full time at home and still smashing it, knowledge is power, programming around lifestyle changes is key for long term results💪💯 #crossfit #weightlifting #backday #squat #squatclean #cardio #strenghtandconditioning #strengthtraining #powerlifting #gym #fitness #muscle

“I’ve just got a slow metabolism, should I take thyroid medication?” In short, no. without blood work to prove that your thyroid function is abnormal this can have a detrimental effect on your health. Your thyroid hormones don’t just burn calories, they also help control various bodily functions including cardiac output, respiratory responses, thermogenesis and nutrient uptake. A typical thyroid panel will test for TSH and T4 (free thyroxine). This will help to determine if the issue arrises from the thyroid gland (primary), or peripherally from the pituitary (secondary) or hypothalamus (tertiary). Additional tests include T3 and TSH receptor antibodies. Hypothyroidism resulting in a reduced basal metabolic rate may present as: - Weight gain - Poor appetite - Fatigue - Hair loss - Constipation - Stiffness and cramps - Cold intolerance - Loss of libido - Menstrual irregularities - Mood changes Hypermetabolism from hyperthyroidism is caused by increased thermogenesis and may present as: - Weight loss - Increased appetite - Fatigue - Tachycardia - Heat intolerance - Tremor - Insomnia - Agitation - Mood changes There are scenarios where the use of exogenous thyroid hormones are appropriate, however in the absence of thyroid disease this is not a long term fix. In a prep setting bodybuilders will often use exogenous hormones to either normalise thyroid function when production has been impacted by extreme dieting or to raise levels above physiological range in order to reach low levels of body fat. In both scenarios the use of exogenous hormones will suppress natural production so blood work should be consideration in order to manage this post show and mitigate symptoms of hypothyroidism. Fasted Check In - Week 1 Weight: 75.65kg Pretty happy with how this week has gone, first time being in a proper deficit in a long time so definitely need to get used to being hungry again. Training has been great and really enjoying higher volume training. Christ it feels good to get a pump on! Sleep has been alright, I’d say averaging around 6.5-7 hours per night. Trying to focus on getting back into a good sleeping routine. Ideally I’d like to be in bed and lights out for 10pm and waking up at 6am but we’re working on it! All in all, good start to the cut and excited to lean out over the next 6-8 weeks!
