⭐️/5 *ignore the dust on my Kindle omg😭* Title: The House Sitter Author: Elizabeth Drummond Quote: “There was something so fierce about the gift of Wolfie’s emotion. He hid it away, like a guarded treasure behind high walls, but when the defences came down, when he entrusted a person with his heart, it was possibly the strongest force Pippa had ever encountered.” First of all, I’d like to express my gratitude to NetGalley and the author for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Upon first impression, the book’s plot seemed promising, and the cover was adorable, leading me to have high expectations. Unfortunately, this read did not meet my expectations. While I usually enjoy slow-burn romances (in fact, some of my favorite romance books are slow burns), this one was not for me. I felt there were too many unnecessary scenes added to the book just to prolong it, without adding significant value to the overall story. The story begins with the FMC still dating her ex (which was unbelievable to me because HOW did she stay with that man for so many years?), but I understand that this was important for the plot. Then the MMC, initially introduced in the prologue (where he definitely made a bad impression) reappears. He is the typical snobbish rich boy - with a very questionable name but whatever - a character type I usually enjoy in books, as they often reveal their real character and are ultimately loving people. However, this was not the case here. I didn’t feel chemistry between the main characters throughout the book, and I couldn’t connect with them individually either. Despite their traumas and emotional past, they didn’t resonate with me and often annoyed me. BOOK REVIEW The plot focuses on Pippa, who had just left a ten- year relationship, and was attempting to pick the pieces of her life. I love Pippa’s attachment to Hurst Bridge but her initial naivety was nauseating. The characters made the plot very relatable and engaging. They went above and beyond to deliver. Mae, Frankie and Juniper the pig were all on point. I enjoyed the small town setting and the accurate description of the Yorkshire Moors, which would make you want to visit this amazing English countryside. I appreciate the author for ‘dealing’ with Alex. I love that the reader didn’t have the burden of handing him his ‘punishment’. There could have been more focus on how the relationship between Wolfie (who names a child that) and Pippa developed other than what we were led to see. I wanted to give Wolfie a smack on the head for the way he blows hot and cold and always running at the first sign of ‘trouble’. Also, the plot could have been shorter as I felt there were some parts where we were just going through the motions for the ending that we all know. If you love grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity and small town romance then you will enjoy this. I spent a Saturday and a Sunday morning reading this book and found it to be a funny and charming story. From the beginning, I despised Alex and his father, so I was delighted when Pippa finally went her separate way. After wallowing in self-pity for a time at her cousin's place she lands on her feet with a house-sitting job at a lovely big mansion. My favourite parts of the book are the scenes where potential buyers view the mansion and Pippa finds ways of sabotaging the potential sale. Todd, the next-door neighbour is a hoot, especially when he and his pig get involved in Pippa's scheme. Wolfie is a sullen character but it is clear he has taken a shine to Pippa but he's not very good at flirting. Fortunately, his actions speak louder than words and there are a few very sweet and swoon-worthy scenes. I would have liked him to have a bit more self-confidence and not go off in a huff every time he sees Pippa interacting with Alex. Thankfully, Pippa doesn't give up on him. I laughed out loud at Pippa and Wolfie's madcap last-minute dash to prevent a courier from delivering the paperwork for the sale of the mansion. It was such a lovely and humorous moment near the end of the book. This was a lovely book and made the perfect weekend reading at the end of a busy and stressful week.

ARC review 📚 This book is an absolutely lovely light hearted romance and is very typically English, I loved it! Pippa finds herself completely turned upside down when her over a decade long relationship ends, and with it her job and her home. She takes a job caretaking at an old English manor that featured in her youth and growing up. Man of the manor, grumpy and standoffish Wolfie, can't find the same charms in the quaint town as Pippa can and is determined to get rid of the place. I'm sure most of us can relate to Pippa in one way or another, and her strength and dedication is admirable. Seeing Wolfie's softer side appear was delightful after cracking the grumpy exterior. Special mention also to Juniper the pig for providing some laughs 😂 The House Sitter will be out February 23rd. Let’s talk LOCATION. #thehousesitter is set in a fictional part of Yorkshire in a moorland town just outside of Sheffield. Obviously #Sheffield is real but everywhere else fictional. I drew inspiration from real places such as Padley Gorge and Haworth to create somewhere idyllic and rural where someone like Pippa could thrive. When I pitched the lead male protagonist to my editor I described him as ‘if Mr. Darcy and the Beast from Beauty and the Beast had a baby that looked like Alexander Skasgard and rode motorbikes.’ Whew 🥵 This is probably the most fun I’ve had on #pinterest in a long while… but in all seriousness taking time to really get to know this character helped me visualise him in tricky scenes. As a #workingmum with very little free time I need all the help I can get… 😜 If you’re writing, take the time to know your characters. They have to live and breathe as well as drive the narrative. ✏️ BOOK REVIEW ✏️ The House Sitter - Debbie Howells ➪ genre: mystery, thriller ➪ rating: 3 stars . Buddy read with @kristins_library I really enjoyed this book. I liked the various perspectives throughout - Gemma in the past with Kat and Jude in the present day. One of the problems that I have is that the ending was rushed and it didn't feel like all the characters got a proper ending. After going through the details of each of their lives and involvement in the plot, it just fell flat when it came to wrapping it up. There's also the fact that one of the POV's isn't actually relevant to the story and it would've been better to replace it with Oliver's as it would be the interesting to see his take on what happened. I am not talking about your standard home either, these are the homes of the wealthy, the second homeowners who leave their homes empty for months at a time. After reading this book, I definitely wouldn’t trust a stranger to look after my home. (even if I was fortunate enough to own a fabulous holiday home) In this story, we have a lone female traveller who spends her time moving from one empty villa to another as a house sitter. She changes her name and appearance frequently, as she is constantly covering her tracks. We then have a grieving widow. Her husband Oliver has just been killed in a car crash, but as the story unfolds, secrets begin to unravel. Was Oliver murdered and if so by whom? And is there anyone in his family to be trusted? This was a fun thrilling book. It reads almost as two stories running parallel and each chapter changes between, Katherine, the widow, Jude, Oliver’s mother, the woman who keeps changing her name and one other character who gets brought into the equation. The way the story unravels with all its twists and turns kept me hooked right until the end, and it’s only at the end it all comes together perfectly. I was torn with my suspicions too, with my final suspect being only 80% confident I was right. Debbie Howell is definitely an author to keep on my radar! After reading The House Sitter, you'll not only wish you'd never heard of this term, but you'll also start to doubt your own house guests or even family members. ;) The book takes place in two timelines, we follow a young woman who tries to find her place under the sun and her own identity by becoming a house sitter in various luxury holiday destinations in Europe, while at the same time no obstacle stops her on the way to her goal. The book also follows the life of a therapist who, after the death of her husband, realizes that her husband had a double life. Soon, relations with his primary family also begin to get complicated. We all choose the face we want to present to the world. Everyone is hiding something and it's only a matter of time before it all comes out. An extremely suspenseful novel that you won't be able to put down. Now THIS is what you call a psychological thriller! Admittedly it did take me a while to get into, it wasn't a book that grabbed me from the very first page BUT once it did grab hold it sure as hell didn't let go. Told in dual timelines of before and after, it starts with a call to 911 from an elderly lady needing assistance as she thinks someone is in her home. Gunshots are heard and then all is silent... Iris is 70 years old, an elderly widow who lives in a large home in a beautiful area. Iris is lonely and since her husbands passing hasnt managed to keep up with the upkeep of her home or gardens. Iris then meets Lydia at a local diner. Lydia is down on her luck and seems to be getting a hard time from her boss. Feeling sorry for her, Iris offers her a live in job as a housekeeper, aswell as her husband Seth. Soon after Iris goes missing, the scene left behind does not look good, with pools of blood and the phone line cut and no sign of Iris anywhere.... but is everything as it seems. The story that unfolds is full of twists, turns and suspense and you will not be able to put it down. 📚 Book Review 📚 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Katharine and Oliver appear to have the perfect marriage, but when Oliver dies in a tragic car accident it soon becomes clear that he wasn't the man everyone though he was. Oliver came from a wealthy family, who in turn have secrets of their own. Gemma is a housesitter who changes her name regularly to cover her tracks after theft and sometimes even murder. How the storylines were connected was brilliant. It kept me guessing, then just as I thought I'd worked it out, I changed my mind! I read this in two sittings (only because life got in the way)! I could quite happily have read in one sitting given a chance. It was that gripping and certainly kept me page turning with short chapters from different points of view. I haven't read anything else by Debbie but after reading this I will be looking out for more. I was gripped with this one right from the start and the way it flitted between the two storylines seamlessly kept me guessing the whole way through. I am useless at predicting twists and outcomes so I've given up trying 😂 but it means I'm generally always surprised by the time I get to the end of the book. The characters are a group of really unlikeable people but for me that works perfectly in a thriller and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out the secrets that were uncovering as you got through the book. Gripping, easy to read, cleverly put together, everything you could want from a thriller! This one is told from the point of view of several characters connected to Oliver who has tragically died in a car accident. This includes his mum and wife, as well as other chapters that are told from the mysterious house sitter and her past. I was hooked on this book not knowing which way it was going to go. By about 40-50% I had a theory and though I ended up being right it didn’t make me like the book any less as I spent the second half just looking for clues that would confirm or disprove my theory, and there were times I wavered! This book was only published on Thursday so if you need a new thriller read this one could be for you! Debbie Howells is now an author I want to read more of. ✨BOOK REVIEW✨ Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Oliver is killed in a car accident and his wife Katherine is devastated. With detectives on the case, she learns a lot about her husband that she never knew. There is also another story here about a young girl that goes by different names through the years. She is a house sitter and not a very good one!! How do these stories come together? You have to read to find out. I was quite invested in the story and read this in a days time. I really thought Debbie Howells was clever on how she brought these stories together in the end. I've read several of her books and I have never been disappointed! I recommend this one to keep you entertained for a day or two!
