#BookReview #TheWhartonPlot by #MariahFredericks Based on a true story, Edith Wharton, an aging author of the Gilded Age struggling with writer’s block, a failing marriage with an ill husband. Murder is a good distraction? Well-developed main character, atmospherics of NYC. Engaging but can be slow moving (at least for me). My review posted this morning. I loved everything about this book. Edith Wharton’s snarky, biting wit. The portrayal of a writer at the mid-century mark with some of her greatest work ahead of her. Cameos by Henry James and Vanderbilt’s. The comforting truth that being a writer in 1910 isn’t much different from being a writer in 2024–the jealousy, the crappy royalties. All there for Wharton, too. On top of all that, the murder victim is none other than David Graham Phillips, Madison’s own. Who sounds sort of like an ass, but we’ll still claim him. All the stars. Highly recommend. #madisonindiana #thewhartonplot #edithwharton #bookrrcommendations #bookrreview

🎧 Audiobook Listening Shenanigans 🎨 My daughter’s bedroom furniture is my great-great aunt’s French provincial set. It’s amazing to have such good quality furniture to keep in the family, especially when it’s so feminine looking. My daughter has been requesting a desk for her room of late though, which wasn’t included in the original set. Upon checking Facebook Marketplace for a couple weeks imagine my surprise at finding the exact same set in a vanity that folds down! So, this piece will obviously get to do double duty as a vanity and desk when the mirror is folded down. The vanity needed a little TLC, mostly involving some sanding and painting. But, you all know what I did while I was doing that! Thank you to @netgalley and @stmartinspress and @dreamscape_media for the EARC and ALC of The Wharton Plot. Did you guys know that Edith Wharton helped solve a murder back in her day? I didn’t! This book follows that historically accurate story while throwing in the author’s own dialogue and small plot details. While this story is quite interesting, I do believe that I liked Frederick’s novel The Lindbergh Nanny a smidge more. I enjoy a good historical fiction and this one delivers, but there were a couple of slow spots for me. Overall, a solid read though and I enjoyed it! QOTD: Do you know of any other authors who helped solve a crime? 🅐🅡🅒 🅡🅔🅥🅘🅔🅦 🖋️ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒐𝒏 𝑷𝒍𝒐𝒕 by @mariahfredericks 🖋️ Special thanks to @minotaur_books for my gifted advance copy in exchange for my honest review. 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 𝐏𝐮𝐛 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐞: January 23, 2024 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞: Historical mystery 𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 💭 I thoroughly enjoyed this book, mainly because it is based on a real-life person. Edith Wharton is both strong and yet emotionally vulnerable. I really felt for her, especially how she deemed herself trapped by Teddy’s mental illness. While I don’t condone infidelity, it was clear that she was heartbroken over the state of her marriage and the implications of ending it in the 1910s. I found it remarkable how Mrs. Wharton was able to solve a murder by asking questions, examining the evidence, and using her powers of deduction. There was no crime scene investigation or assistance from technology or police, and yet she still found the culprit. The commentary on society and the evolving role of women during the early twentieth century is quite nuanced, but beware, there are aggravating arguments made! 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬 📖 Inspired by a true story, The Wharton Plot follows Edith Wharton as though the fading years of the Gilded Age in a city she once loved so well, telling a taut tale of fame, love and murder, as she becomes obsessed with solving a crime. If you wrote a book what genre would it most likely be? . The Wharton Plot by Mariah Fredericks . Edith Wharton is a writer in 1911 New York. After having a bit of a ruffled meeting with a fellow author named David Graham Phillips, he is murdered in the street the next day. Edith falls into attempting to piece together David’s murder, which seems fo revolve around his book he just finished. . What I liked: -I loved the mystery. A murdered writer, his last novel, threatening letters, all of these sucked me into this story. -I liked that our heroine was a mature woman. Edith was not a little 20-something amazingly solving a murder. She was a mature woman who really thought about motives and asked questions and wasn’t afraid to consult with others to get a different view. -The ending surprised me! . 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you @minotaur_books for this @netgalley to read. 📖 Currently Reading 📖 I am #currentlyreading The Wharton Plot by Mariah Fredericks. Thank you to @minotaur_books for sending me a copy of this #historicalfiction title. The novel is inspired by a true story and follows Edith Wharton through the fading years of the Gilded Age in Manhattan, a city she once loved. Finding herself at a crossroads with both her marriage and her writing, she makes the decision to leave America, her publisher, and her loveless marriage. Then the dashing novelist David Graham Phillips—a writer with often notorious ideas about society and women’s place in it—is shot to death outside the Princeton Club. Edith herself met the man only once, when the two formed a mutual distaste over tea in the Palm Court of the Belmont hotel. When Phillips is killed, Edith’s life takes another turn. His sister is convinced Graham was killed by someone determined to stop the publication of his next book, which promised to uncover secrets that powerful people would rather stayed hidden. Though unconvinced, Edith is curious and becomes obsessed with solving the murder. I am finding the story interesting so far - not for the amateur sleuth vibes, but for the snapshot of Edith Wharton’s life and the subtle discussion on writing. It is also giving me an insight into the era of this time frame. The Wharton Plot is an interesting look into history - and I like that it is not a world war 2 novel. In addition, the mix of mystery with historical fiction is interesting. The Wharton Plot by Mariah Fredericks is a mesmerizing new novel that follows novelist Edith Wharton as she tracks a killer in the twilight years of the Gilded Age in New York. It was published on January 23, 2024. Synopsis: New York City, 1911. Edith Wharton, almost equally famed for her novels and her sharp tongue, is bone-tired of Manhattan. Finding herself at a crossroads with both her marriage and her writing, she makes the decision to leave America, her publisher, and her loveless marriage.

And then, dashing novelist David Graham Phillips―a writer with often notorious ideas about society and women’s place in it―is shot to death outside the Princeton Club. Though unconvinced, Edith is curious. What kind of book could push someone to kill?

The Wharton Plot✨ New York City. 1911. The Gilded Age. Edith Wharton is an author and meets fellow author David Graham Phillips and instantly dislikes him. The next day Mr. Phillips is murdered in broad daylight. Edith is drawn into the mystery and tries to find the killer as well as help make sure his latest book is published. His sister is certain the controversial book is the reason he was shot. I loved the previous book The Lindbergh Nanny by this author but this one was a little disappointing for me. I do love books set in the Gilded Age as well as a good who done it so I was hopeful. Edith just threw out wild allegations about who killed Graham and then was proved wrong so she accused someone else. It was interesting that is was based on a true story and I love historical fiction. It was just too slow moving and honestly a little boring for me. I have seen good reviews and feel like I might be an outlier however:) ⭐️⭐️.5 Thanks to @netgalley and the publisher for an arc for review. Available now. Have you been to New York City? ✨ Book Review ✨ The Wharton Plot By: Mariah Fredericks Pub. Date: January 23rd, 2024 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Narrator: Kitty Hendrix Edith Wharton is in New York City with her husband Teddy. He is I'll and needs to see a doctor. Edith is invited to soiree and meets novelist David Graham Phillips and they have a lively interesting discussion. Later that week David is killed in broad daylight in front of the Princeton club. Edith decides to look into his murder. I found this historical fiction/mystery very good. 📘BOOK REVIEW📘 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙤𝙣 𝙋𝙡𝙤𝙩
By Mariah Fredericks RELEASE DATE:1/23/24
285 pages
8h 50m (narrated by Kitty Hendrix) Thank you @minotaur_books and @dreamscape_media and @netgalley for my gifted book and audiobook. My thoughts are my own. MY THOUGHTS: If you love historical fiction and reading about the Gilded Age, then you will enjoy this book. With glimpses of several famous people of the time, the main character, Edith Wharton, is part of the Four Hundred, the upper crust of New York Society, led by Mrs. Caroline Astor. Mrs. Wharton, a famous novelist in her own right, takes an instant dislike to novelist David Graham Phillips when she meets him over tea. Phillips is brash, opinionated, and chauvinistic. The next day he is shot and killed; and his sister tells Edith that she believes he was killed by someone who wanted to prevent his latest book from being published. Edith, grappling with the thought of aging and her failing marriage decides to do a little investigating on her own. I enjoyed the interactions between Edith Wharton and her peers. Told in a conversational tone, from Edith’s perspective, the story kept me engaged from the first page. I also checked out the audiobook. The narrator provides the perfect voice for Edith. Historical fiction lovers interested in this time period will enjoy this book, which is inspired by a true story. (Please swipe ⬅️ for the publisher’s synopsis.) QOTD: What are you starting out the week reading? The Wharton Plot by Mariah Fredericks Bethany's Review: ⭐⭐I love historical fiction and had high hopes for this. Unfortunately, it did not live up to its potential. Based on a true story and the life of writer, Edith Wharton, as she tries to solve fellow writer, David Graham Phillips’s murder. I love learning about women who break the mold, are strong and independent and fight for what they want. The story never pulled me in. I tried listening to the audiobook and the narrator was too breathy for my liking. I then tried reading the physical copy I had and just kept putting it down and often found my mind wandering. The pacing was very slow, and I was bored. This ended up being a DNF at 75% for me. Sara's Review: ⭐⭐⭐ I loved the story told, however I did not enjoy the way it was told. This book moved painfully slow. Like I could have read 4 other books before I read through half of this book. Wharton's story is great - I love a strong woman, especially during a time that women were not typically the "main character" in life. I just did not love the execution of this story. It was too wordy, too descriptive and I felt like there were too many characters. I think if this book was shorter and less detailed it would have been a fascinating read. Happy Ground Hog Day!!! The Wharton Plot by Mariah Fredericks is a well written historical fiction/mystery inspired by true events and people. Author Edith Warton finds herself investigating the death of a brash novelist, whom she had recently met and disliked. THE WHARTON PLOT ⭐️3.5 ➡️Description Edith Wharton meets novelist, David Graham Phillips, who is shot to the next day. We follow her story as she investigates who could have been jealous enough to kill him. I enjoyed this novel set in the gilded age inspired by a true story. Prior to this, the only thing I knew about Mrs. Wharton was that she was a novelist herself. While the mystery is prevalent, there is a great balance into who she was as a person. She's a formidable woman and I found this dive into her character interesting. The way this novel took shape and not only highlighted Wharton and Phillips, but a woman's place in gilded age society was an entertaining read. There were times when it felt like background information on the characters and their relationships was expected. At points I felt like details were missing and in some places the story really slowed. Wharton jumped to conclusions often, sometimes almost comically. I appreciated a bit of levity placed throughout in what could have otherwise been a depressing story dealing with death, relationships, affairs, jealousy, etc... All that, the ending really was great! It felt like there was some ambiguity and in this case I thought it was a great way to find the shooter and an even greater way to dive into the motive. I've read a handful of novels set during this time in history. What's your favorite decade to have a story set in? . . . Thank you @netgalley and @minotaur_books for the eARC #thewhartonplot #Edithwharton #thegildedage #mysterynovels #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #bookstareviewweek

☆NetGalley Audiobook Review☆ Thank you @netgalley Publication Date: 01/23/2024 The Wharton Plot Mariah Fredericks *New York City , 1911. Edith Wharton is known for her novels and sharp tongue. She’s tired of Manhattan, at a crossroads in her marriage, and her writing. She’s decided to leave America and by doing so also leave behind her husband and publisher as well. Novelist David Graham Phillips is known for his writing on the place of women and society. Mr.Phillips is shot outside the Princeton Club. Even though Edith has only met him once and their distaste for each other was clear she’s intrigued by the murder, especially after Mr.Phillips sister believes his death was caused by the publication of his next book which would uncover secrets of powerful people. Though Edith is not convinced of this she is too curious to let it go. Inspired by a true story author Edith Wharton becomes entranced in solving the crime. *Edith Wharton is an independent woman with strong opinions and an outspoken personality. Set in the backdrop of the Gilded Age she navigates her life as an author, wife, and a woman who’s at a crossroads about her future. Her one and only encounter with fellow author Mr.Phillips doesn’t go well with his strong opinions on the place of women and society in general. Edith is not endeared to him but she certainly didn’t except for him to be murdered. After meeting his sister, Edith makes the decision to investigate into his death. Her investigation is methodical and her moves are calculated. She’s intelligent and uses her skills to track down multiple leads. While not fast paced the story flows evenly. As suspects and motives begin to surface Edith becomes more involved in her investigation efforts. Readers also see more into the personal life and thoughts of Edith Wharton. The narrator did a nice job. I would recommend this for historical fiction and mystery readers.

I am a big fan of Edith Wharton's books, so I was eagerly anticipating reading about a story in her life. I found the plot to be quite dull. The murder of a fellow novelist, David Graham Phillips, her competitor, piqued Edith's interest; her investigation was unimpressive as she had no way to narrow down the suspects. She kept accusing anyone she thought was the murderer without any concrete evidence, which made her appear foolish. Moreover, her relationship with her husband is a significant part of the novel, with Edith constantly trying to avoid him. In my opinion, the book lacked any real suspense. The story focuses on too many different things thrown into the plot, making it unnecessarily longer. I was completely engrossed by the writing of Old New York and its society. This part of the story truly stood out to me and I found it to be the most enthralling aspect of the entire narrative. All the money, glitz, and glamour provide such a rich setting for rich people behaving badly! And @mariahfredericks definitely nailed it with this novel! I honestly didn't expect a murder mystery when I picked this one up - those aren't the type of novels I gravitate toward. However, Ms. Fredericks really kept me glued to the pages with this one. Of course, as soon as I finished this novel, which is based on a true story, I went down a rabbit hole researching all of the characters she touched on - what a fascinating group she brought together in this book! ⬅️Swipe left for Goodreads synopsis! And who doesn't love a story about authors! I've honestly never even heard of Edith Wharton or David Graham Phillips until now🙈, so I was certainly captivated. ✨Out TODAY: The Wharton Plot, by Mariah Fredericks✨ . . Fredericks’ THE WHARTON PLOT is a celebration of its namesake—her bravery, her originality, the way exacting humor can meet even the gravest of subjects on the page. . . Like Wharton’s own work, this book is an homage to New York City, and to days gone by. Unapologetic in its critique of a society in which aging women are invisible, THE WHARTON PLOT is a memorable commentary on the passing of time — how dramatically and quickly the world changes, and yet how painfully familiar the female experience has been since the turn-of-the-century in 1900. . . To start, a review of the audiobook itself (with thanks to @dreamscape_media and @netgalley for an advance copy): the narration was well done and perfectly cast. Kitty Hendrix’ performance gives one the feeling of Wharton being the subject - rather, the heroine - of one of her own novels. . . However, I do suspect readers will want to speed up the audio to 1.25x - 1.5x, as I did early in my listen. . . As for the story, THE WHARTON PLOT is well-researched. It includes enough inspiration from Wharton’s history that those familiar with the writer’s life and work will find many literary anchors and few points to take issue with. . . At the same time, it includes enough fiction and context that those new to Wharton’s story and writing can enjoy this read - and will likely wish to immediately read THE HOUSE OF MIRTH. But only to start. (Which, I suspect, was good part of Fredericks’ goal for this novel). . . . . . . #bookreview #arcreview #netgalley #thewhartonplot #dreamscapeaudio #arcreader #edithwharton

The murder and mayhem kept the book moving forward and kept me intrigued and on my toes. I loved the strong personality of the main character, Edith Wharton. Her musings about the people around her were very entertaining. The unsavory and quirky character surrounding her provided enough suspicion to keep you guessing. To find out this book is based on true people and true events fascinated me. I give The Wharton Plot by Mariah Fredericks ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. Thank you to @minotaur_books & @mariahfredericks for the #gifted book and ebook in exchange for my honest review. Pub Date: January 23, 2024 Publisher: Minotaur Books Book Length: 304 pages About the Book 👇🏻 New York City, 1911.

Though unconvinced, Edith is curious. What kind of book could push someone to kill?

Pub Day Mini Review THE WHARTON PLOT By Mariah Fredericks @MariahFredericks Out Now from IG: @Minotaur_Books  I LOVED @mariahfredericks last book THE LINDBERGH NANNY and this newest historical fiction read, THE WHARTON PLOT, is another hit with me! I did a combo of reading and listening to the audiobook for this one. I love Edith Wharton and remember reading her book, THE AGE OF INNOCENCE. This book has lots of real life influencers from the Gilded Age in New York City. It gives some insight into Edith Wharton’s life. It also has a mystery which is based on real life. From this book, I’ve now got to do four things: read THE HOUSE OF MIRTH, spend deep dive time in the murder of David Graham Phillips, get a biography on Edith Wharton, and buy the finished copy of this book so I can read the Author’s Note which is not in either the ARC print or audio version. ❓Have you read anything by Edith Wharton? #thewhartonplot #mariahfredericks #minotaurbooks #historicalfiction #audiobooks #netgalley

Happy release day to this historical fiction read with mystery! 🎉 I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway (I never thought that would ever happen), so I want to thank both Goodreads and the publisher - @minotaur_books - for sending me the ARC. Before reading this, I didn’t know if Edith Wharton so I was interested to dive into this. I was intrigued to learn after finishing the book that she was the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize. This story was interesting and kept me guessing of who had murdered David Graham Phillips. I liked reading along to see how obsessed Edith got for solving the crime. I love wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style and I kept hoping that I would get used to it as the story went on - sadly, I didn’t and sometimes would get lost and would have to go back and reread. I also felt like there were a lot of characters that I didn’t get to really know. Overall, I found this book to be an okay read and I gave it 3.5⭐️. It’s Tuesday! And you know what that means! 📚 New books! I happen to have two ARCs that release today… so let me tell you about them. They are both historical fiction, NOT set during WW2, and you know that’s my jam! I cannot wait to read both of these. 🔸Diva New York Times bestselling author Daisy Goodwin returns with a story of the scandalous love affair between the most celebrated opera singer of all time and one of the richest men in the world. Maria Callas was known simply as the divine one. With her glorious voice, instinctive flair for the dramatic, and striking beauty, she was the toast of the grandest opera houses in the world. When she met the fabulously rich Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, She fell desperately in love. He introduced her to a life of unbelievable luxury. And then suddenly, it was over. Aristotle Onassis would marry the most famous woman in the world, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, leaving Maria to pick up the pieces. In an academic life that feels like ages ago, I read a LOT of Edith Wharton’s work. She remains one of my favorite authors—the one I recommend to many of my bookish friends. . . That’s why I’m really exacted about a release tomorrow from @stmartinspress : “The Wharton Plot” by @mariahfredericks . . Stay tuned! I’ve got a full ARC review coming tomorrow afternoon ✨ . . But, briefly and for now, I’ll tell you that I read it in one day and the book made me reach for Wharton’s writing again- which, I suspect was at least part of Fredericks’ goal for her readers. . . . : . #arc #arcreview #thewhartonplot #edithwharton

So, this was a very interesting book! It is historical fiction, as well as a murder investigation, as well as a novel. AND, it is based on a true writer from the early 1900’s, Edith Wharton, who I just read was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1921! So, the fact that I did some fact checking always makes me love a book so much more!! Edith is a middle aged woman (almost 50), and actually, now that I think about it, she referred to HERSELF as an OLD woman...different times I guess.... She is an esteemed writer, and obviously ahead of her time in thinking that women should be treated equally... and speaking her mind. She is in a marriage that she is not very happy with...and hasn’t written for a few years... While in a meeting with her publisher, another writer comes in to the restaurant, and takes a seat with them. He is brash, bold, loud, and nothing that she likes or is interested in... But then, shortly after, he is murdered... She then spends the rest of the book trying to figure out who and why! That’s all I’ll give you, but I will say that I never would have guessed it! Lots of suspense. Lots of suspects. Lots of great history and descriptions of a bygone era and the surrounding NYC of that time. Beautiful to imagine in my mind. Thanks to #NetGalley and #DreamscapeMedia for an ARC of this very interesting, very original audiobook! #TheWhartonPlot by #MariahFredericks and beautifully narrated by #KittyHendrix. It is due out on shelves tomorrow, 1/23/24, so look for it then! 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!! 📖 ARC Review 📖 Title: The Wharton Plot Author: Mariah Fredericks Pub Date: January 23, 2024 Swipe ➡️ for Goodreads synopsis This was an interesting read. It’s fictional but inspired by true events, and centers around novelist Edith Wharton and the death of fellow author David Graham Phillips. I read two of Edith Wharton’s books (The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth) last year which is why I thought it would be interesting to request this book. I’d say it was helpful to have read some her books before going into reading this. Her books are reference throughout. David Graham Phillips isn’t as well known but I don’t feel that reading anything by him is necessary. While I was engaged in reading this and it kept me invested, I do have lots of thoughts and questions on this one that I will include in my full review on Goodreads. There were several aspects that didn’t work for me but may be right up someone else’s alley. I did enjoy learning more about the lives of those this book centered on, and would research to see if the info was an embellishments or accurate. I was impressed by the true representation of the characters and their lives. The Wharton Plot 🖊️ By Mariah Fredericks Pub Date: 1/23/24 🌟🌟🌟/5 Here’s a historical fiction with some mystery elements to help kick off the year! After a fellow writer, David Graham Phillips, was shot outside of a club, Edith wondered what could’ve happened. Though she didn’t have a positive experience meeting him, she still met his sister, who had her own speculations and concerns. All of these concerns prompted Edith to begin her own search for shooter. Between mysterious notes, being followed, and a new upcoming publication by Phillips, it’s a unique mystery to kick off the year! This novel has an interesting concept. A historical fiction with a twist. And adding Edith Wharton gave a different perspective. This novel is a slower burn. More character development of sorts and slower events - not necessarily a fast paced novel. There are small twists to help keep the novel rolling, but really it was a slower read for me. It was ok, all in all, but I don’t think necessarily my style. I struggle more with slower paced books, though I am starting to favor them more. I think to the right audience, though, it would be a big hit. Just wasn’t for me. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, received from the publisher and author. However, all thoughts and views reflected are strictly my own opinions. 🖊️Do you prefer character driven or event driven books?

📖Book Review📖 The Wharton Plot By: Mariah Fredericks ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Such a great historical fiction mystery! I didn’t realize at first that it was inspired by a true story, which makes it even that much more intriguing! It will keep you guessing and sleuthing alongside Edith the entire time on who murdered David Graham Phillips. Such a quick and easy read! It touches on themes of love, jealously and betrayal. The Wharton Plot is based on the murder of American novelist David Graham Phillips, who was known for provocative commentary on social issues. Phillips was shot in 1911 outside of the Princeton Club in NYC. In the novel, Fredericks follows author Edith Wharton as a contemporary who becomes obsessed with solving the murder. The story opens as Wharton is meeting with her publisher in a tense conversation about her latest book. Her publisher notices David Graham Phillips passing through the hotel lobby and invites him to join. Phillips, known for his muckraking novels, couldn’t be more different from Edith Wharton, and the two instantly despise one another. It isn’t long before Wharton learns of Phillips’ murder. The writer has been shot and the murderer fled the scene. Over the course of the book, Wharton becomes increasingly obsessed with the mystery of who shot Phillips. Wharton attends Phillips’ funeral and continues looking into the murder. She uses the case as a distraction from an unhappy marriage. She fixates specifically on Phillips’ upcoming publication, Susan Lenox: Her Rise and Fall. Though Wharton doesn’t necessarily like the book, she wonders if it holds the source of truth that led to the author’s murder. This was a compelling mystery, made even more intriguing knowing it was based on a true story. Wharton pursues a number of leads, weighing each as she comes to it, and dismissing many. The case also serves as a distraction for Wharton as she struggles with her husband, Teddy. Wharton is unfulfilled in her marriage. At one point she muses that Teddy’s greatest fear is that Edith will leave him, while her greatest fear is that she never will. The conclusion to the mystery builds off the real-life conclusion , but also adds some additional theorizing that ties everything together. As with most good historical fiction, Fredericks ties together known truths with some creative liberties. Elegant writing, expert-research, and a voice that captures the sharp wit of the legendary writer. Thank you @minotaur_books for my copy. #thewhartonplot #mariahfredericks #historicalfictionbooks #minotaurinfluencers #histfic

Thank you to @minotaur_books and @mariahfredericks for an ARC of The Wharton Plot by Mariah Fredericks. It comes out January 23rd. This book blew me away and was my favorite read of December. Fredericks’ characterization captivates in this engrossing historical mystery. Edith Wharton is one of my favorite authors, and seeing New York City through her eyes was incredibly satisfying. Literature lovers and fans of The Gilded Age will appreciate this one! The mystery (based on a real-life murder) is intriguing, but even more captivating is glimpsing part of Wharton’s life. Her books are so sensitive and insightful, and Edith as a character comes across the same way whether she is considering personal relationships, writing and authors, or crime. In a shocking development, Wharton’s friendship with Henry James in this book actually made me want to maybe, finally, try reading one of his works! 😱 What is one of your recent favorite reads? 💝Thank you, @Minotaur_Books, for the free book. #partner ✍🏻📜The Wharton Plot by Mariah Fredricks ✒️ I wandered through the gilded corridors of time and found myself in the company of Edith Wharton, the literary queen behind “The House of Mirth.” I wasn’t just another guest at her lavish soirees; I was privy to the quiet corners of her world. There, I discovered the depth of her character—Edith with her pen poised, weaving her next narrative, while her heart navigated the tricky waters of her marital relationship. She isn’t just a character in a book; she’s someone you root for—formidable, yes, but also down-to-earth, a steady companion, and a fierce defender of the written word. 🕯️ But then, a shadow fell over the page when a fellow writer met an untimely end, and our Edith Wharton turned detective. Asked to pore over the deceased’s final words, she was drawn into a labyrinth of intrigue, where every high-profile acquaintance hid a secret. I found myself leaning in, trying to catch the scent of truth among the misleading trails, but the answer to the mystery danced just beyond my grasp. 📖 There’s something special about seeing a historical icon cast in a new light, especially when wrapped in a shroud of suspense. This fictional reimagining let me see a side of Edith Wharton that felt both intimate and grand. It was like peering through a keyhole into a past both familiar and untold, and I walked away from the story feeling like I’d shared a secret with a legend. 📚Genre: Historical Fiction | Mystery 📌📆Coming out on January 23, 2024 🖨️Publisher: Minotaur ❓Who is your favorite Classic author, if you read the classics. {book review} 💜The Wharton Plot 💜 Author: Mariah Fredericks Pub Date: January 23, 2024 Thank you @minotaur_books for the #gifted copy of this book! This story is based on a real person Edith Wharton in the early 1900s. She is quick witted, definitely a woman not of her time and above all a no nonsense person. She is at the point in her life where she is questioning her marriage and her career as a writer. Another writer, David Graham Phillips is shot to death outside a busy club. Edith finds herself immersed rather quickly as David’s sister invites her to look into her brothers death. She is convinced it was to try to stop him from publishing his new book. Edith can’t imagine why someone would do such a thing…especially over a book. Thoughts: This book is a perfect book for someone looking for a cozy historical mystery. I actually really enjoyed the history discussing the Biltmore’s, Vanderbilts and other historical people and places discussed in this book! I’ve visited some of the places mentioned which helped me relate to this book even more. I did find some of this book a bit dry and slow which made the pacing seem a little off. I think overall if I had to describe this book I liked the history more than the mystery. As always I am always thankful for a copy of this book however this was more of a like not love book for me. 💜 What are you reading today? . . . #bookstagram #booklover #booklove #bookobsession #bookobsessed #bookaddict #bookaddicted #bookaddiction #bookworm #avidreader #avidreaders #booksbooksandmorebooks #bookwormsunite #read #readmore #readmorebooks #readlikebethany #readersgonnaread #reader #readersofinstagram #readersofinsta #readabook #bookblogger #booknerd #historicalfiction #cozymysteryreaders📚 #thewhartonplot #mariahfredericks

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘁 📘⁣ ⁣ I love when I read a book that’s a stray from my normal reads, but really surprised me. I haven’t read too many historical mysteries, but this one was right up my alley! ⁣ ⁣ The main character is Edith Wharton, the famous author. She is in New York City between her trips to Paris to see her editor. While out one day, she meets David Graham Phillips, a writer on the precipice of publishing his biggest novel. It’s a hard look at socirty and people of means. It’s caused some controversy and many people don’t want to see it published. Edith is strongly dislikes this man and goes on with her life. However, a dear friend has asked that she read the novel and lend her good name to support him. The next day, Phillips is shot dead outside the Princeton club in the bright daylight. ⁣ ⁣ Edith can’t get over that she just met with this man and now he’s been murdered. She decides she must know what is written in this book and goes to his publishing house to read it. His editor advises that Phillips had been sent several threatening letters. Edith is fascinated by these and can’t stop thinking about Phillips. When she returns back to her hotel, she finds she is also the recipient of the same kind of notes. Who is this person? Why would they want her? Would they harm her? ⁣ ⁣ I really enjoyed the time period of Gilded Age NYC. If you are a fan of the @hbo show Gilded Age, I think you will enjoy. Edith goes to an opera at the new Metropolitan Opera House which was a huge plot on the newest season of the show. Edith was a fun character as she was in high society, but didn’t entirely love what it meant. She was also on the brink of separating with her husband and she’s trying to figure out life without him. ⁣ ⁣ Thank you @minotaur_books and @mariahfredericks for my advanced reader copy. The Wharton Plot is out January 23! ⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱? I had a manicure and pedicure this morning and now I’m just reading a new book. ⁣ ⁣ #thewhartonplot #edithwharton #mystery #historicalfiction #minotaurbooks #mariahfredericks #bookstagram #bryantparkbooks #bookreview

I finished this last night pleasantly surprised. The Wharton Plot (out January 23rd) is an historical fiction/mystery. Edith Wharton becomes obsessed with trying to solve a murder of a fellow writer in New York 1911. This book sucked me in and I couldn’t put it down. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thanks to @minotaur_books for this ARC copy. #thewhartonplot #minotaurinfluencers #arcreader #historicalfiction #mysteryreader #bookworm #bookaddict

The weather has turned cold, but even as I shiver, I am grateful for great books, a good cup of coffee, and the beautiful blooming camellias. Review: Lovers of Literature will be enchanted by The Wharton Plot, Mariah Fredericks’ well researched novel of Edith Wharton, a renowned American writer and designer. In her writings, Wharton openly shared her insider’s knowledge of the upper-class New York aristocracy. Based on a true story, the book opens with author Edith Wharton temporarily confined in New York City with her ailing husband. I enjoyed hearing her discussions with her publisher and other writers concerning their works in progress. In time, Edith is drawn into the aftermath of the death of a young author who had been at odds with her for years. The reader joins Edith as she follows clues and interviews suspects, all of whom are society’s elite. And between the lines, we learn of the cold state of her marriage and details of her tryst with a lover. This book contains much about the Gilded Age and the famous people of that time, like Henry James, who were part of Edith’s world. I was drawn to this book because of author Edith Wharton, the first woman awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and also the recipient of an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Yale University. Publication date: January 23, 2024. ✍️The Wharton Plot by Mariah Fredericks ✍️   Inspired by the true events of Edith Wharton.   The death of David Graham Phillips was not a random incident, his murder was planned. Phillips’ sister asked Edith Wharton for help in publishing his book. When agreeing to this, Edith did not realize that involvement in the famous writer’s unpublished book would expose her to danger. His great novel was supposed to tell the truth, and there were people who did not want this book to be published.   Edith Wharton did not warm my heart but she was an interesting character. She was rich, had a sharp tongue and didn't care about others. Her marriage was falling apart, and her writing career was not going well when she found herself in the middle of a murder mystery. I enjoyed reading about life in New York during the Gilded Age. It was a story that would lead the reader through the life of the famous author, her involvement in the crime and end the novel with an unexpected ending.   Thank you @Minotaur_Books for the ARC to review.    ✍️✍️✍️

The Wharton Plot By: Mariah Fredericks 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1911-This novel is based on novelist Edith Wharton in New York City during the Gilded Age. A well-written historical fiction novel as we follow Edith later in life. Murder, intrigue, and the setting make this novel fascinating. I read her last book The Lindbergh Nanny and enjoyed that one too. Thank you @stmartinspress, @minotaurbooks and @dreamscape media for these copies. This book is available January 23, 2024. #thewhartonplot, #edithwharton, #theguildedage, #stamperlady50, #stmartinspress, #dreamscapemedia, #bookstagram

Mariah Fredericks’ “The Lindbergh Nanny” took a true story and turned it on its heels, adding some entertaining and delicious details that kept me engaged from page one. Her new novel, “The Wharton Plot” did exactly the same thing, and I was delighted to be given the chance to enjoy it. Fredericks has a unique ability to craft a delightful story based on true events, setting her apart from other novels of the historical fiction genre. “Plot” is narrated by Wharton and is set in 1911 New York. Wharton is unhappy with her marriage, taking solace in her romantic partners and her friendship with author, Henry James. As a respected and published author, Wharton is asked to review Phillips’ last novel before publication, where the subject matter is rumoured to be the cause of his untimely death. Not only do readers get a glimpse into the twentieth century publishing world, but the ins and outs of high society, including dinner parties hosted by the Vanderbilt’s, paint a stunning picture of the lifestyle of the uber-wealthy. Edith Wharton is the first woman to win a Pulitzer for her writing but I know very little about her published works, and I feel like this novel has once again piqued my interest in the literary icon. David Graham Phillips was killed around 1911, although Wharton had nothing to do with the investigation into his death, but the idea of Wharton as an armchair detective was clever and creative. Fredericks’ continues to deliver entertaining stories, and I look forward to her next based-on-a-true-story novel! #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #readersofinstagram #mariahfredericks #thewhartonplot #minotaurbooks #minotaurinfluencer #netgalley #edithwharton #henryjames #vanderbilts #newyorkcity #author #writer #publishing #marriage #gildedage #historicalfiction #murder #investigation #secrets #infidelity #historicalfiction #fiction #davidgrahamphillips #arcreviewer #arc #arcreview #electronicarc #bookreviewer #bookreview

Mariah Fredericks' mesmerizing novel, The Wharton Plot, follows renowned novelist Edith Wharton in the twilight years of the Gilded Age in New York as she tracks a killer. Pages 304 Published by Minotaur on January 23rd, 2024 New York City, 1911. Edith Wharton, almost equally famed for her novels and her sharp tongue, is bone-tired of Manhattan. Finding herself at a crossroads with both her marriage and her writing, she makes the decision to leave America, her publisher, and her loveless marriage. And then, dashing novelist David Graham Phillips—a writer with often notorious ideas about society and women’s place in it—is shot to death outside the Princeton Club. Edith herself met the man only once, when the two formed a mutual distaste over tea in the Palm Court of the Belmont hotel. When Phillips is killed, Edith's life takes another turn. His sister is convinced Graham was killed by someone determined to stop the publication of his next book, which promised to uncover secrets that powerful people would rather stayed hidden. Though unconvinced, Edith is curious. What kind of book could push someone to kill? Inspired by a true story, The Wharton Plot follows Edith Wharton through the fading years of the Gilded Age in a city she once loved so well, telling a taut tale of fame, love, and murder, as she becomes obsessed with solving a crime. . . . . . . #TheWhartonPlot #MariahFredericks #ThisReadingNurse #MinotaurBooks #bookish #booksbooksbooks #bookstoread #readingaddict #readingisfun #readinglist #readingtime #booknerd #bookaddict #readingcommunity #whatiread #readingbooks #bookishlove #fiction #newbookalert #kindle #ebook #historicalfiction #historicalfictionbooks
