Current read. It's a literary historical magical realism fantasy and I have mixed feelings. I'm usually in love with literary fiction and their beautiful prose and fantastic characters and settings, right until the very end when the plot falls flat (without fail) and I want to fling the book across the room (btw, I would never do that because a) that's how you get cracked spines and bent corners, eeew, and b) I normally read on my phone and I definitely do not want to fling that anywhere!). So.. this book is intruiging thus far. Set in 1890s London, it follows the lives of four women and one man, and it's all about class and gender disparity and people who randomly sprout angel wings. And it's not a nice book to read if you love dogs. We'll see what I think of it at the end... QOTD: Have you read this yet? Will I want to fling it across the room? Do you enjoy literary fantasy? #currentreading #amreading #bookdragon #bookwyrm #booklover #fantasyreads #literaryfiction #igreadersclub #igreaders #igreads #instareading #bookstagram #readersociety #readingsociety #writersarereaders #readersofig #readingcommunity #readersoffantasy #alwaysreading #noseinabook #bibliophile #getcaughtreading

Uncommonly Bound Books: The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn and Of Manners and Murder by Anastasia Hastings 📚️ Here’s why I think these books are uncommonly bound. ⛓️ Although one is a Regency Era romance and the other is a Victorian Era cozy mystery, both books feature a set of half-sisters in London society. ⛓️ In The Viscount Who Loved Me, Kate’s father remarried when she was about 3 years old. Her stepmother Mary fully embraced Kate and loved her as if she were her own. As a result, Kate and her half-sister Edwina are very close. Edwina even declares that she will only marry a man of whom her sister approves. This is particularly unusual because although Edwina is considered a diamond of the first water in her debut season, Kate is seen as a disagreeable spinster. ⛓️ In Of Manners and Murder, Violet’s mother, Clara, died when Violet was twelve. Her father soon after married a woman named Elizabeth. Elizabeth was much more traditional than Clara and considered Violet to be unmanageable. She therefore focused her energy on her own daughter Sephora. As a result, Violet and Sephora have vastly different interests and values and are not close at all. However, now that their parents are all dead, the sisters are living together in London while their aunt is travelling abroad. As Sephora’s only nearby living relative, Violet is seen by society and the key to Sephora’s time and affection (though Sephora does not agree with that sentiment). ⛓️ In both books the younger half-sister is considered a great beauty with favorable marriage prospects while the older one is generally seen as a spinster. In both cases, the older sister acts as a gatekeeper to the younger one. However, the relationships between the sisters vary greatly. Kate and Edwina are friends and confidants while Violet and Sephora have as little to do with each other as possible. 📚️ For the full review, see the post “Not by Half” on my blog Uncommonly Bound (link in bio). #Bookstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookstagramIt #ReadersGonnaRead #NoseInABook #BookNerd #Bookworm #BookWyrm #BookDragon #UnlikelyReadAlikes #Bridgerton #TheViscountWhoLovedMe #JuliaQuinn #OfMannersAndMurder #AnastasiaHastings

getting out of my reading comfort zone! (?) is there a kind of book/a genre that you have never read before?? bookish never have I ever!!! - listened to an audiobook - read a graphic novel - read a memoir I'm don't typically read non-fiction, & since I've never read a graphic novel, this book is a 2 for 1 special! Uncommonly Bound Books: The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn and Of Manners and Murder by Anastasia Hastings 📚️ I often find similar themes, characters, or connections between books that would probably never share shelf-space at a bookstore or a library. This time around, my chosen unlikely read-a-likes are: 📚️ The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn London 1814 Viscount Anthony Bridgerton is in search of a wife. His requirements are that she be attractive, intelligent, and make a good mother. Most importantly, she must be someone with whom he will never fall in love. Kate Sheffield is not considered a great beauty by Ton society, but that doesn’t bother her. Kate is much more concerned about her sister Edwina’s marriage prospects. When Edwina catches the eye of Viscount Bridgerton, a notorious rake, Kate vows to do everything in her power to thwart the match. However, as the pair continue to spar and sparks begin to fly, Kate begins to wonder if it might be her own heart she’s trying to protect. 🐝 Of Manners and Murder by Anastasia Hastings London 1885 Violet Manville isn’t a typical Victorian society miss. She spent most of her life away from England with her father while he worked for the Foreign Office. After the deaths of her parents and stepmother, Violet and her half-sister Sephora moved in with their eccentric aunt. At least, until Aunt Adelia decided to take an extended journey abroad with her current lover. Just before leaving, Adelia entrusted Violet with a great secret and responsibility. Adelia writes the wildly popular Miss Hermione advice column, or at least she did. For the foreseeable future, Violet will take on the title herself. Adelia assures her niece that she will have no trouble doling out sound advice to anxious readers across England. Violet isn’t so sure. Especially when her very first letter leads to a suspicious death. 🖋️ Keep an eye out for my next post to see why I think these books are uncommonly bound. #Bookstagram #Bookstagrammer #ReadersGonnaRead #NoseInABook #BookNerd #Bookworm #BookWyrm #BookDragon #UnlikelyReadAlikes #Bridgerton #TheViscountWhoLovedMe #JuliaQuinn #OfMannersAndMurder #AnastasiaHastings

We visited some Amish friends last weekend, and I didn't breathe a word that I was reading this book 😁 The Amish Wife is a true crime book that I got free on Kindle about a woman who died in a "barn fire." Book Title: Political Trilogy: The Gamble, The Maze , Checkmate Author: Madhuri Tamse Book Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐ Format: Kindle Pages: - I am a big of Madhuri Di's writing style and was eagerly waiting for her to complete the entire series of 3 books and then I wanted to read it all together. Now that I read them, and what can I say, she is the best!! The Gamble is the first book of the series where the main characters of the book are introduced. Meher Walia aka Queen and Ayaan Shergill aka King are the children of the Pratap Walia and Kailash Shergill who happen to be each other's nemesis. This book grips with the start of Meher ans Ayaan's lovestory backed with a lot of political drama and ends with a cliffhanger. The Maze, happens to be the second book which reveals some complex secrets from the past but answers to those are still unanswered. This is a game where the king does everything in his power to win his queen back and support him. Checkmate, the conclusion to the series, the questions unanswered, the doubts, the political powerplay and hunger of power, the possessiveness, the protectiveness about the family, the live so intense are so well written and as the book progresses the drama unfolds and it keeps you on the edge right till the end. The twists, turns and plot shifts are Oh MyGod mind-blowing! Congratulations Madhu Di for such a brilliant book. You vision and conceptualization of your stories are so amazing and we are spell bound with your stories. My favourite character here was Vishnu who literally stole my heart with his dedication and selflessness. ⁣ “’Ah!’ said Miss Marple. ‘But I always find it prudent to suspect everybody just a little. What I say is, you really never 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸, do you?’”⁣ ⁣ ⁣ The Murder At The Vicarage was the official pick for April’s #ReadChristie2024. ⁣ This was my third (maybe fourth) time reading it and it is always delightful. The first time I read it I really wasn’t too sure what was going on — I was so confused b/c Miss Marple is actually quite a minor character (it was my first Miss Marple book and I was still very new to Agatha). But in my subsequent readings I’ve come to really love Len and wish he narrated more books. ⁣ ⁣ I listened to the audiobook this time around and was really aware of Griselda’s disdain for Miss Marple. I’d honestly glossed over it when reading it with my eyes but it was hard to ignore this time around. That made me sad. I like the TV version (with Geraldine McEwan) — I feel like they’re great friends in it.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #TheMurderAtTheVicarage #MissMarple #AgathaChristie #bookstagram

#MyBookishUpdate Thank you Vicki @antipodeanbookclub for tagging me to share a little update on my reading life. Last week was a whirlwind and I was at a loss for post ideas so this came at the perfect moment. 📖 What was your last read? I just finished reading Shine On, Bright & Dangerous Object by Laurie Colwin. A look at what it is like to be widowed at a very young age. Which could have been melancholy in another author’s hands but is poignant and ultimately uplifting in Colwin’s. 📖 What are you currently reading? I am currently reading Something Fresh by P.G. Wodehouse for the #CozyReaderBookClub and Arranged Marriage by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. Two very different books but I’m enjoying both. 📖 What are you currently listening to? I am listening to the audiobook of On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder and it is just wonderful. I love that Laura is extra spunky in this one! 📖 What’s your most recent book purchase? I just ordered The Growing Summer by Noel Streatfeild which I will be buddy reading with Kate @nocomplimentstoyourmother in July. 📖 What are the top 3 books on your TBR? The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman, The Scapegoat by Daphne Du Maurier, and Wild Strawberries by Angela Thirkell. I’d love to get all three read by the end of June! I have tagged a few people but, tagged or not, play along if you’d like. I’d love to hear your answer to one of these questions in the comments!

The lowest key #SundayStacks featuring some of my favorite books on my shelf featuring mothers, both good, bad, and absent. I also really wanted to add Medea but realized that play is in a collection not its own text. Also couldn’t find my copy of Woman Warrior by Maxine Hung Kingston which I immediately thought of for this as well as Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver that I gifted to a friend. Also The Book of Margery Kempe since she was an absent mother. Any favorites? What are your favorite books featuring mothers? I love books that explore bad or non-traditional mothers (my thesis work was on monstrous women and I’m always curious with monstrous motherhood- how women are made into monsters through divergence or incompatibility with cultural norms). So send me recs! Song is for my momma. Who is the best and would wake me up in the mornings with a “good morning sunshine” and this song always makes me think of that ☺️ love ya @ceely1018 💕☀️ 🏷️: #booklover #booknerd #bookeorm #noseinabook #stacksonstacks #bibliophile #books #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #bookrecs

Locked in Pursuit by Ashley Weaver London 1941 Electra McDonnell may be a (mostly) reformed thief, but when she learns of a series of recent burglaries, something doesn’t quite add up. Despite months of silence, Ellie takes her concerns to military intelligence officer Gabriel Ramsey. It soon becomes clear that she’s onto something. This is a great addition to the Electra McDonnell series. The mystery in this one was intriguing, but it honestly took a back seat to all the other things happening in Electra’s life. She’s fighting her feelings for Major Ramsey, Felix keeps disappearing to Scotland for weeks on end, and she’s stumbled into new information about her father’s death. There’s also the small matter of WWII. It boggled my mind how one night Electra was huddled up in a bomb shelter and the next she was at a fancy party. Those were wild times! Personally, I was okay with the characters being the focus in this one rather than the plot. Electra’s in pivotal moment. She finds herself having to choose between the future and the past in more ways than one. I also liked the introduction of Major Ramsey’s sister Noelle. It was interesting to see the Major interact with his own family rather than just colleagues. This one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Can’t wait to see what happens next! Note: This is the fourth book in a series and should be read in order. Book 1 is A Peculiar Combination. Romance Steam Rating: Warm Cocoa [1 out of 5] (Kisses Only) Thank you to @NetGalley @stmartinspress and @minotaur_books for an Advanced Reader Copy eBook. #Bookstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookstagramIt #ReadersGonnaRead #NoseInABook #BookNerd #BookAddict #Bookworm #Bookwyrm #BookDragon #NetGalley #AdvancedReadersCopy #LockedInPursuit #ElectraMcdonnell #AshleyWeaver #MinotaurBooks

When Among Crows by Veronica Roth “You have spent too much time with mortals if you expect magic to move in a straight line.” I don’t know how to explain this book. Just picture Polish folk creatures in modern day Chicago and a mysterious mortal shows up on an unspecified quest. Chaos ensues. Enjoy! This was a quick read for me. I liked the modern take on folklore and the way various creatures have adapted to contemporary life. In some ways, it felt a little experimental. The narrative bounces around between both characters and timelines. This felt confusing, but ultimately gave the reader a better sense of the entire story. As Baba Yaga says, magic is crooked. The audiobook is narrated by Helen Laser, James Fouhey, and Tim Campbell. I absolutely love when audiobooks have different narrators for the main POV characters! This was a very quick, enjoyable listen. I liked the intro and outro music. Thank you @macmillan.audio for the complimentary audiobook. #Bookstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookstagramIt #ReadersGonnaRead #NoseInABook #Booktography #BookNerd #Bookworm #BookWyrm #BookDragon #Audiobook #MacmillanAudio #MacAudio2024 #WhenAmongCrows #VeronicaRoth

Recent Read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a good read! I've always been one for unique things. Different is fool. So circus books are right up my alley. The story of this book was interesting. It jumps from present to past often. The present being Simon, a librarian and lover of old books. The past following a traveling "circus." These two are linked by an old book that finds its way to Simon. The story progresses with Simon unraveling the mysteries of the book. I really enjoyed reading this. I just wish the characters were more developed. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed Water for Elephants. In fact, Sara Gruen is quoted on the cover. #bookreview #recentreads #bookstagram #mayreads #booklover #bibliophile #fictionreads #bookworm #booksareeverything #readingtime📖 #bookrecommendations #readbooks #noseinabook #wordsarelife #lostinthestory #booksbooksandmorebooks #readingaddict #turningpages #booknerd #📚

Uncommonly Bound Books: Gardening Can Be Murder by Marta McDowell and A Dangerous Collaboration by Deanna Raybourn 📖 I often find similar themes, characters, or connections between books that would probably never share shelf-space at a bookstore or a library. Here’s why I think these books are uncommonly bound. ⛓️ In Gardening Can be Murder, Marta McDowell explores ways that horticulture and murder mysteries connect. She covers many books and authors that somehow touch on both subjects. The ties that bind include but are not limited to authors who garden, fictional detectives who garden, and plants that can kill. My personal TBR list grew a lot while reading this book, but there was one book not mentioned that I felt would have fit in nicely. ⛓️ In A Dangerous Collaboration, Veronica Speedwell travels to St. Maddern’s Isle, a Cornish island estate owned by the Romilly family. One striking feature is the poison garden tended by Mertensia Romilly. The garden contains such plants as poppy, foxglove, and blooming night jasmine. Some of these are used to make herbal remedies to common ailments. Though useful in small doses, they can be lethal. ⛓️ As Mertensia says, “Proper gardening is dreadfully dull. This adds a bit of discomfort to the mix. And things are more enjoyable when there is just a little discomfort to sharpen the edge.” 📖 For the full review, see the post “Beware the Garden” on my blog Uncommonly Bound (link in bio). #Bookstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookstagramIt #UnitedBookstagram #ReadersGonnaRead #NoseInABook #Booktography #BookNerd #Bookworm #BookWyrm #BookDragon #UnlikelyReadAlikes

Reading recently has been slow. I love the books i am reading, but it seems to be taking longer for me to get through them... that is until i picked up 'Poor' - @katriona_osullivan One of our wonderful customers asked me if i had read it and told me how traumatic yet uplifting it was. I'm not usually a non- fiction type of girl, but i can't resist a recommendation, and oh my days... i whipped through this book within hours. Katriona pulls no punches and tells the story of her upbringing with brutal honesty. It's a life filled with heartbreak, deep in the clutches of poverty, but it's also a story of determination to change the path she was put on. It did make me feel sad, angry, and raw, but also inspired and in awe at the courage, strength, and bravery of this amazingly determined woman and the kindness of those who helped her. I started this with tears and ended it with tears, Mr Mason, thank you for your excellent recommendation. #waterstones #bookshop #reading #quiettimes #noseinabook #favouritepasttime #bookstagram #book  #wrexham #ilovebooks #bookworm #bookobsessed #reader #bookshoplove #booksbooksbooks #relax #katrionaosullivan #poor

Another book, even though I know the algorithm is going to show this to, maybe, five people. Lol. Since I've had a lot of downtime, I chose to use it reading. I'm currently on book five in the past week. Lol. First, I have to say that before even opening them, there's something magical about the Emily Wilde books. They have the most velvet-soft touch to them, and the design is beautiful. I love Emily Wilde's adventures. This book, Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands, is book two of a three book series — the third not coming out until next year (I've already pre-ordered. Lol)! I was hesitant about starting this one, worried that I wouldn't like it as much as the first, but I was sooo wrong. If you're looking for a cozy, feel-good read, with adventure and happy endings that give you some sense of closure but still have you begging for more, this series is the one. Start with Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries. 5/5⭐️ #Books #Book #BooksAreBetter #BookTakeMeAway #CurrentRead #Reader #ILoveBooks #NoseInABook #Reading #BookLover #BookReview #FairyBook #FantasyBooks #FictionBooks #EmilyWilde #HeatherFawcett #BookRecommentations #FairyFantasy #Fairies #BooksBooksBooks #Bookworm

Uncommonly Bound Books: Gardening Can Be Murder by Marta McDowell and A Dangerous Collaboration by Deanna Raybourn 📖 I often find similar themes, characters, or connections between books that would probably never share shelf-space at a bookstore or a library. This time around, my chosen unlikely read-a-likes are: 📖 Gardening Can Be Murder by Marta McDowell This book looks at the intersection between mystery novels and gardening. The author, Marta McDowell, is a long-time gardener and mystery reader and decided to write a book that brings the two pastimes together. She details topics ranging from fictional detectives with a penchant for gardening to mystery novels that involve gardens to murderous plants to the real-life gardens of mystery writers. Along the way, she sprinkles in relevant facts about various plants that show up in the books she describes. 🥀 A Dangerous Collaboration (Veronica Speedwell # 4) by Deanna Raybourn Victorian England Lepidopterist Veronica Speedwell is flattered when Tiberius, the brother of her close friend and colleague Stoker, asks her to accompany him to a house party on a Cornish island. It may be strange for Tiberius to insist that she be introduced as his fiancé, or for the master of the house to be obsessed with his would-be bride who vanished years ago, not to mention the various eccentricities of the entire Romilly family. However, Veronica finds none of this awfully troubling. She’s only really interested in the rare butterflies endemic to the island. Well, that and continuing to avoid a certain grumpy taxidermist who has stolen her heart—much to her dismay. 🦋 Keep an eye out for my next post to see why I think these books are uncommonly bound. #Bookstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookstagramIt #UnitedBookstagram #ReadersGonnaRead #NoseInABook #Booktography #BookNerd #Bookworm #BookWyrm #BookDragon #UnlikelyReadAlikes

PARADISE by Abdulrazak Gurnah 📚 “They can lock you up, put you in chains, abuse all your small longings, but freedom is not something they can take away. When they have finished with you, they are still as far away from owning you as they were on the day you were born.” Set in the years leading up to colonization of East Africa, this story follows twelve-year-old Yusef, who has been sold to a powerful merchant as repayment for a debt. From here, we see how he adapts to life working for the merchant, through helping maintain the estate property & running the store, to going on trading expeditions with the merchant himself. Yusef is a quiet, observant character, renowned for his beauty and the gifts that it affords him. Throughout the story he is passive, lacking agency or seemingly even the desire to forge his own path in life. This passivity creates an atmosphere of waiting for the reader - I always felt like the story was teetering on a precipice, in regard to both Yusef’s story itself & its broader place in history. I enjoyed the writing of this book, & especially loved the ending. This one was as the @fictionmatters book club pick for April & was a delight to discuss with that crew. There was a lot of interesting insight into the parallels between Yusef’s tale & that of Joseph in the Bible or Yusef in the Quran - being unfamiliar with each of these myself, it felt valuable to hear these perspectives. All in all, this was a great reading experience & I was happy to get a glimpse into the pre-colonial history of this particular region of Africa. #abdulrazakgurnah #paradise #bookreview #goodreads #historicalfiction #recommendedreading #bookrecommendation #nobelprizewinner #nobelprizeliterature #thenewpress #fictionmattersbookclub #whatimreading #youshouldreadthis #bookerprizefinalist #comingofage #brinkofchange #culturalidentity #noseinabook #nevernotreading #bookworm

Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland “A thief, a strongman, a spy, an assassin, a nobleman, and an exiled prince add up to a ring of liars. Trust is a surefire way to wind up with a blade in your back.” A group of people skilled in deception and violence has been assembled to complete a dangerous mission: kill the current king of Yassan. Each of them has a role to play, but they each also have their own agenda. In a company of liars, no one can be trusted. Not gonna lie, I’m still reeling from that ending. This is a thick book, but I was so immersed in the story that it just flew by. I love that the story was told from so many POVs. Since everyone is lying to some extent, the reader learns things and sees complications long before they happen. Even so, there were multiple twists along the way that I didn’t expect. I enjoyed this book and am curious to see what happens next. I hesitate to call this a romance, but the book does include three separate love stories. Each would-be couple has real affection, but significant obstacles. It was interesting to see them all play out. The physical book includes a map of the world which I found very helpful, especially since the characters travel around so much. The audiobook is narrated by Donald Chang, Greg Chun, Zion Jang, Sophie Oda, Jaine Ye, Roger Yeh. I absolutely love that each of the POV characters had their own distinctive narrator. It’s a very well done audiobook. Note: This is the first book in the Broken Blades trilogy. It doesn’t quite end on a cliffhanger, but it’s clear that there is much more story to tell. The next book will be Four Ruined Realms. Romance Steam Rating: Gentle Simmer [2.5 out of 5] (Limited Detail/Fade to Black) Thank you to @redtowerbooks for an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. ⠀ #Bookstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookstagramIt #UnitedBookstagram #BookstagramCommunity #ReadersCommunity #ReadersGonnaRead #NoseInABook #BookNerd #BookAddict #Bookworm #Bookwyrm #BookDragon #AdvancedReadersCopy #FiveBrokenBlades #MaiCorland #RedTowerBooks

I read this book on holiday. I literally sat on a sun bed, and other than going for a dip in the pool when I got a little too warm, I read this book in one sitting. Emery has a heart condition that means that if she has a surprise or a sudden jolt, she can die. The first time that this happens is when Emery is 5, and she meets her guardian angel /spirit guide. He's nice and friendly, and over time, we discover that he is forever 35 and called Nick. I really enjoyed how we learn a little more about Nick each time Emery "dies," and although he never usually meets the same person twice (why would he?), Emery is always brought through to him. I really enjoyed the relationship that grows between them. How, even though they never spend long together, you can sense the feelings are growing. Snapshots of Emery and her friends and family throughout the years gave me a real sense of knowing all of them, and I was fully invested in their lives. Some very sensitive topics are dealt with in this book, and I never felt as though they were just "tagged on" or included just because. They all gave depth to the story. I was full-on ugly crying at the end and felt as though I'd been thoroughly wrung out. This is the kind of book that would make a great film but an even better series - NETFLIX, I'm looking at you! I received an ARC of this novel from the publisher through Netgalley. #BeckyHunter #MeetMeWhenMyHeartStops #alwaysreading #ARC #Bookshelf #booksarelife #bookcommunity #booknerdigan #bookster #book #Bookworm #bookaddict #BookLovers #Bookworld #bookaholic #epicreads #goodreads #instabooks #IReadEverywhere #kindle #literature #library #NoseInABook #readersofinstagram #Netgalley #TotalBookNerd #IGReads #Bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #amazon

It’s My Bookstaversary! Life has an amazing way of surprising you sometimes. Much of my adult life, I have struggled to find a place where I feel like I’m being “me”. I’m a people pleaser (to a fault) and would rather make other people happy, before myself. I have a wonderful and supportive family (and a kick ass work framily 😁) and amazing “couple” friends that I love spending time with— but I always felt like nothing that was 💯 me. And then… I took the plunge last May, and created my Bookstagram account. And since then, my life has blossomed with so many amazing friendships, both IRL and in the online community. I have joined a book club, I organize a silent book club, and I have been on several bookish adventures! I’m even going on a 5-day vacation with my book bestie @lauraslilibrary this month— to, you guessed it, do bookish things (and some non book things). I have always been a reader— the perfect activity for an introvert— but now I’ve just become an extroverted introvert. Thank you to all my book friends— the in real life ones, my BBB girls, the awesome book girls in my engagement groups, and especially to my husband— @reinermartin who always looks the other way when I bring home more books. You have all shown me that there is so much happiness in being true to who you are and what you love! 🧁🧁🧁🧁🧁🧁🧁🧁🧁🧁🧁🧁🧁🧁 𝑸𝑶𝑻𝑫: 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑩𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕? Some more #bookmail: The Singularity by Balsam Karam, translated by Saskia Vogel “In an unnamed coastal city filled with refugees, the mother of a displaced family calls out her daughter’s name as she wanders the cliffside road where the child once worked. The mother searches and searches until, spent from grief, she throws herself into the sea, leaving her other children behind. Bearing witness to the suicide is another woman—on a business trip, with a swollen belly that later gives birth to a stillborn baby. In the wake of her pain, the second woman remembers other losses—of a language, a country, an identity—when once, her family fled a distant war. Balsam Karam weaves between both narratives in this formally ambitious novel and offers a fresh approach to language and aesthetic as she decenters a white European gaze. Her English-language debut, The Singularity is a powerful exploration of loss, history, and memory.” When this book arrived, I took an opportunity to flip through its pages to get a feel for the story and what to expect. The language and the writing are frank and honest and the subjects of trauma, loss, grief span the experiences and circumstances that unite people - women - across borders and languages. Thank you to the teams from Book*Hug Press and ZG Stories for putting a copy of this book in my hands. #thesingularity #balsamkaram #womenintranslation #translatedfiction #readingintranslation #fiction #alwaysreading #newbooks #bookhugpress #zgstories #noseinabook #bookworm

The Women by Kristin Hannah Women can be heroes. Raised to respect the heroics of military men during WWII, Frances “Frankie” McGrath is proud to enlist in the Army Nurse Corps to serve in Vietnam. It isn’t long before Frankie realizes that there’s a big difference between her grandfather’s glorious tales of victory and the realities of a warzone. However, the horrors she survives in Vietnam are just a prelude to the difficulties awaiting her when Frankie returns stateside. This was such a thought-provoking and heartbreaking read. I appreciated the very frank portrayal of women who served in Vietnam as nurses as well as the many hurdles those same women faced after returning home. I adored the strong female friendships. However, I got a little ragey on Frankie's behalf more than once due to the other people in her life. Note: This book is very emotionally heavy. There are tons of trigger warnings. The ones I can remember are war zone gore, traumatic death, emergency medical care in suboptimal conditions, public heckling, gaslighting, miscarriage, addiction, and infidelity. #Bookstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookstagramIt #UnitedBookstagram #BookstagramCommunity #ReadersCommunity #ReadersGonnaRead #NoseInABook #Booktography #BookNerd #Bookworm #BookWyrm #BookDragon #TheWomen #TheWomenBook #KristinHannah @stmartinspress #StMartinsPress

I am an absolute sucker for old books. It has something to do with the smell. A good one has this almost musty scent, but not quite. It doesn't make you turn your nose up, but rather invites a deep inhalation as you flip the pages. Then there's the drawings, each one is like a little gift! My favorite way to discover a new-old book is by happenstance. You never know what you will find on a random thrift store shelf and it's always exciting when you do find something intriguing. Like this 1959 hardcover titled The Living Forest. "In May of 1958, the American Museum of Natural History unveiled the Hall of North American Forests, the most comprehensive exhibit of its kind in the world. In this new Hall, which required 10 years to complete, the forest is considered not as an area covered with trees, but as a complex community composed of numerous kinds of plants and animals." So, now that I have my behind the scenes guide to the exhibit, I think I should probably visit the @amnh 😉. That is the best part of discovering through books, the adventures they ignite! And, yes, the Hall, is still a fixture of the museum on the first floor. Seems like a fitting read and destination for a visit for a Forest Bathing guide! Anyone up for a trip to the big apple? "Here is a panorama surprisingly different from what the casual observer sees as a silent and almost changeless stand of trees. For the forest is constantly changing..." #thelivingforest #americanmuseumofnaturalhistory #hallofnorthamericanforests #forestbathing #noseinabook #newyorkbound #foresttherapy #amongthetrees

While John Boy Walton was my first crush, John Stamos has been my most enduring crush 💞 Yes, there were times in this memoir where a certain amount of cockiness came through the pages, but I enjoyed it. Wow what a book. This is a modern day fairytale and not the Disney sort, in fact loosely based on Snow White and Rose Red by Brothers Grimm. Two sisters, Sam and Elena, are struggling to survive after the pandemic, while they take care of their sick mother, working dead end jobs and struggling with rising costs of living amongst the San Juan islands off the coast of WA (love a novel set in the PNW 😍). Their only solace is the dream to someday leave the island by selling their family home and starting somewhere new. One day a bear shows up, bringing terror and dread to Sam and hope and enchantment to Elena. What a timely novel in our cultural zeitgeist as we have the discussion about what is more terrifying bears or men. This of course is not a response to that conversation though it did draw some connections as the Bear poses no danger at least to Elena, while several men in their life do whether it’s physical danger or the danger that could disrupt their family bonds. This book is about the bonds of sisterhood and how secrets eat away at those bonds. It shows the hopelessness of living through late stage capitalism with no way out slowly struggling to survive and getting further behind. It’s about the power of hope. The lush writing felt magical and mystical, though aside from the brown bear the sisters lives were devoid of magic. Both sisters are intensely unlikeable at times. I felt beyond frustrated by them throughout the book yet somehow they are still so relateable that I found myself hoping they would make better choices. Elena is not bear aware and as an avid outdoorswoman myself that made me irritated beyond belief, but also her ability to find solace and wonder in nature is also so relatable, I can’t tell you the amount of times I hoped to see a bear while camping/backpacking (from a safe distance) so I also get the magic in being able to be in and amongst nature. Sam knows what to do but is also torn between trusting her sister and finding help which comes in the form of Madeline, but Sam worries I think that by believing and trusting Madeline it will supplant what she has with her sister. #Bear #bearbyjuliaphillips Cont in comments

My May TBR, where I explore identity through: Vikram Lall, a man of Punjabi heritage in newly-independent Nairobi, Birdie & Cole - two mixed-race sisters in 1970’s Boston, Jim - a man outrunning slavery along the Mississippi in the 19th century, & finally, Bob - a quiet, retired librarian in Portland. Spending time with a multitude of complex & nuanced characters is just one of the many beauties of fiction. This is why I love reading! I’ve linked my May 2024 TBR highlight for those who want to hear more about these books. I often see books as messengers from universe. Like here is a whole 300 page relatable novel with several reminders for real world, now if you could apply so you could get new messages that’d be swell. Basically books are large, distinctive, expressive fortune cookies 🥠 🙃🤣 imo. Reading while having a picnic in my favorite spot✨ is warmer evening joy. 😇 then walking around stumped on words from a made up land 🖤 all i gotta say is i would like little italy here from mr san diego somenights 🙃 because comfort macarons should be a thing when books be a little too aggressively at-ing you. 🤷‍♀️🤨 i just wanted to read to escape my world. Not be reminded of my status in it😒 but whatever messenger, message received. 🎀 can say i already romanticize my life plenty but the other parts in this book… excuse me, did not need a pen attack for 300 pages 🤨😳🖤🤷‍♀️🎀✨ #noseinabook #picnicinthepark #burnoutbook #sunsetwalks🌅

📚📚Duo Reviews📚📚 I have not seen much about either of these reads but somehow I stumbled onto them. I loooove when this happens as I really enjoyed both of these little hidden gems 💎 Coincidentally sisterhood is a central theme in both stories 👯‍♀️ 📘The Takedown 💭 I had put this book on hold a few months ago, not realizing it took place over Christmas🎄Well, put this on your 2024 holiday reading list✔️ It was good. One sister is a CIA agent who ends up crashing her own family holiday in order to spy on her sister’s shady fiancé. Funny. Mysterious. Heartwarming. Sister love 👯‍♀️ 📕The Split 💭Now this was an interesting read. Jane gets a call from her sister asking for her to come pick her up from a bar. The story then splits in two - one follows a storyline if Jane picked up her sister and the other follows what happens when she doesn’t pick her up 🔄 Great duo storylines. Lots of secrets revealed. Mysterious. Super interesting conclusions. April Reads I thought I would share a few of the books I read in April and really enjoyed. I read 24 books last month which feels kind of crazy but I read a number of short stories, poems, and graphic novels which were very quick. And I DNF’d 3 books so technically I only completed 21 books. Here are some standouts: Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome A Few Green Leaves by Barbara Pym The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, Vol. 4 by Beth Brower The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club by Dorothy L. Sayers The Lost Art of Keeping Secreta by Eva Rice (reread) The Enchanted April by Elizabeth Von Arnim (reread) the Tale of Hill Top Farm by Susan Wittig Albert If you would like to hear my thoughts on these and all the other books I read in April, you can find the link to my YouTube channel in my bio and watch my April wrap up. What were your standout reads from last month?

#signeamtoft #detordnersig

One of my #bookmail arrivals from last week is this collection of essays called Black Cake, Turtle Soup, and Other Dilemmas. The book was written by Gloria Blizzard and the cover refers to it as “a diasporic collection of essays on music, memory, and motion.” “In this powerful and deeply personal collection, Gloria Blizzard uses traditional narrative essays, hybrid structures, and the tools of poetry to negotiate the complexities of culture, geography, and language in an international diasporic quest. These essays of wayfinding accompany anyone exploring issues of belonging — to a family, a neighbourhood, a group, or a country. Here, the small is profound, the intimate universal; the questions are all relevant and the answers of our times require simultaneous multiple perspectives.” I am struggling to get back into the groove of reading and I’m hoping that a switch to non-fiction will help me shake off the current struggle. What are you reading this weekend? Thank you to my people at Dundurn Press for sending this book over my way. ✨ May Pile of Possibilities ✨ I am pretty please that last month I was behind in reading my tbr24in24 and now I’m ahead of the game. I also increased the average number of nonfiction books I’ve read over the year. I have a feeling I might veer off of this list of books but since this book is AAPI month, I’d really like to read at least a few books by Asian or Asian American authors.. My May Possibilities: • The Village of Eight Graves by Seishi Yokomizo • Murder in the Crooked House by Soji Shimada • An Unsuitable Attachment by Barbara Pym • #tbr24in24 • Sally-Ann by Susan Scarlett • #tbr24in24 Not Pictured: • Heart and Seoul by Jen Frederick • Malice by Keigo Higashino • The All-American by Joe Milan Jr. • Excellent Women by Barbara Pym • The League of Lady Poisoners: Illustrated True Stories of Dangerous Women by Lisa Perrin • The Stand-In by Lily Chu • Revenge by Yoko Ogawa • Daughter of the Dragon: Anna May Wong's Rendezvous with American History by Yunte Huang • Out by Natsuo Kirino • The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo • Penance by Kanae Minato • The A.B.C. I had never heard of Fern Brady before but was intrigued to read this memoir about her life with autism and not getting a proper diagnosis until she was in her thirties. Her story is eye-opening, brutally honest, and helpful to people like me who don't know much about autism and how it presents itself. It took me a minute to get used to her Scottish accent, but I loved her narration. It is always a plus for me when an author tells their story in their own voice on an audiobook. #strongfemalecharacter #fernbrady #memoir #audiobook #bookreview #autism #booklover #books #booknerd #bookworm #bookish #bookstagram #iheartbooks #noseinabook #ilovereading #bookaholic #read #reader #reading #alwaysreading #bibliophile

Book Haul 📚 My family is wrapping up this years curriculum. We do homeschool year round and take breaks or long weekends when needed. So I’m starting to get ready for our summer learning. Typically we spend more time on reading, art, and fun science. This summer we are going to try to be outdoors as much as possible. We want to explore in nature and go camping. The kids have been eager to learn about Florida wildlife. This morning I stumbled upon a local used bookstore @thebookrescuers - and it is a hidden gem in St.Pete. SO many books! The staff was super helpful! I explained I was on the hunt for Florida books. They had a whole section dedicated to just that! And I found tons of material that would be perfect for the kids! And affordable!! This whole lots of books cost less than $20. I brought them home and put them on the counter and right away Levi grabbed one. I heard him whisper “this is just what I wanted” - #homeschoolmomwin . I am so excited to pack up these field guides and explore some good old Florida trails. 🌿🍃🌱🌸🌻🌼☀️🌴🌳🦅🦆🐍🐢🐠🐟 #homeschool #homeschoolers #homeschoolfun #bookhaul #usedbooks #kidswhoread #reading #readingisfun #floridalife #florida #floridabooks #unschoolers #getoutside #handsonlearning #floridanature #floridahiking #floridabirds #vintagefloridafieldguide #noseinabook #readmorebooks #readalouds #morningbasket #summerreading #summerexploring

Following the death of her Aunt Rosie, Sara is left a piece if land of Sicily. However the locals refuse to acknowledge the ownership of this land and to understand why Sara must uncover the secrets of her Great-Great-Grandmothet Serafina's life. When I visited Cross & Crows for Amy Mattes’s book event, I picked up Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield. This has been on my wish list for a couple of months now, ever since it was recommended to me by my friend @allivail, but it’s been a little hard to get my hands on. Wouldn’t you know that the minute I stopped thinking about it, it appeared! “Miri thinks she has got her wife back, when Leah finally returns after a deep sea mission that ended in catastrophe. But It soon becomes clear that Leah may have come back wrong. Whatever happened in that vessel, whatever it was they were supposed to be studying before they were stranded on the ocean floor, Leah has carried part of it with her, onto dry land and into their home. Memories of what they had before – the jokes they shared, the films they watched, all the small things that made Leah hers – only remind Miri of what she stands to lose. Living in the same space but suddenly separate, Miri comes to realize that the life that they had might be gone.” I have no idea when I’m going to fit this one in, but I keep sneaking peeks at it on my side table so it wouldn’t surprise me if it happens soon. #ourwivesunderthesea #juliaarmfield #moodreader #bookrecommendations #newbooks #tbr #alwaysreading #bookstagram #canadianbookstagram #lovebooks #bookworm #noseinabook

Elements of Art by Susie Hodge In art education, students are traditionally taught about 7 elements of art and 3 principles of art. This book seeks to look beyond those standards and challenges readers to explore additional considerations (although there is a little overlap with the traditional elements/principles). The 10 elements focused on in this book include Scale, Color, Light, Movement, Medium, Technique, Content, Location, Time, and The Artist. The book is split into two sections. Part 1 goes through the 10 selected characteristics of art. Part 2 presents the reader with several examples of art and highlights specific elements relevant to those pieces. A few artworks that stood out for me were The Monk by the Sea by Caspar David Friedrich, The Death of Cleopatra by Edmonia Lewis, The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, Composition with Figures by Lyubov Popova, From the Top of the Great Pyramid by Lee Miller, and Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View by Cornelia Parker. I found this book enjoyable and informative. I appreciated the images of various artworks. Having that visual aid helped me understand the characteristics being described. I personally don’t have much formal art training (though I do enjoy several creative pursuits at an amateur/hobby level). Even without much background knowledge in art, I still thought the book was easy to understand and fun to read. I think traditionally-educated artists might also enjoy this because it talks about art characteristics that aren’t always considered. Thank you to @NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Publishing for an Advanced Reader Copy eBook. ⠀ #Bookstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookstagramIt #ReadersGonnaRead #NoseInABook #BookNerd #BookAddict #Bookworm #Bookwyrm #BookDragon #NetGalley #AdvancedReadersCopy

Hello May 🌸🌸🌸 I can’t think of a better way to ring in a new month than with the next volume of Emma M. Lion! I am addicted to this series and it just keeps getting better and better. My book also fits the #MayFlowersRead read along hosted by @rebecca.of.wilsonhill. The only requirement to participate is to read a book with flowers on the cover. I already feel like I’m winning. I’m also still reading Darling by India Knight and Anne of the Island and loving both of them as well. I think it might be a good reading month. What is your first read of the month?

April in books! The Whole-Brain Child ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Some very good insights on better parenting in this book. I especially liked the sections on how parents can improve their own responses and reactions. Highly recommended. Tomkin and the Dragon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Loved this so much! JA Andrews never disappoints. Book Lovers ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Very enjoyable. I found the spicier scenes a bit cringeworthy, but maybe that's just me. Love that the two love interests were both in the book industry. Ascendant ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fairly standard high fantasy fare, but it delivers what it promises, and I liked the novelty of a disabled dragon. Ariadne ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Looking at Goodreads reviews for this, many people were disappointed with Ariadne's lack of agency, but I think the author did a good job while staying true to the source material. The Bucket List ⭐️⭐️ Whoever thought it was a good idea to organise the entries by longitude and latitude has never planned a trip before - very impractical and annoying, and of the 1000 ideas provided, very few were interesting or new to me. There are better books like this out there. Werk Soos 'n Miljardêr ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Aka "The Billionaire Career". Some useful ideas and mindset changes, and although I quite liked the story, I was disappointed that it wasn't actually a memoir. Phew! Now I know why I didn't get much done recently - it was a whopper reading month! Chuffed that most of the books were 4+ star reads! QOTD: Have you read any of these books? As usual, I ended up taking way longer than I wanted to reading a classic. I went into this book not remembering why I bought it, and kind of expected one thing, but got something even better. Braddon starts the story off telling us about young Lady Audley and how she ended up marrying above her station to Sir Michael Audley. Then we meet George Talboys who is sailing home from years of trying to find gold in Australia to meet his love. Robert Audley appears in the third chapter and is the main character that links all the characters together and he is the nephew of Sir Michael and ends up becoming great friends with George. Braddon keeps her readers intrigued with an unexpected disappearance of one of the characters, along with murder, scandals, evil plots, and, of course, secrets revealed. I really enjoyed this story and thought it was written in an approachable way (for classics). Would definitely recommend! 4.5/5 @oxunipress #book #books #read #reading #bookstagram #classics #goodreads #novel #ladyaudleyssecret #maryelizabethbraddon #oxfordworldsclassics #paperback #bookrecommendations #noseinabook #reader #funclassics #victorian #readeveryday #victoriangothic #readingchallenge #goodbooks #bookreview #victorianbooks

I got 'Holy Knit' for free on Stuff Your Kindle Day. What a mistake 😕 Let me start with what I liked - the concept of a man magically knitting himself into the main character's life was cute and unique. What I didn't like - literally EVERYTHING else! This was smutty to the point of vulgar (for my taste). The editing was non-existent. Look at the example... and this was just one of many mistakes. One sentence referred to someone as "pour thing." You guys, it was So. Bad. The only reason I finished was that it was blessedly short, and I could squeeze it into my monthly count for April. Skip it. I read it so you don't have to. #holyknit #stuffyourkindle #pass #thankunext #bookreview #romance #free #books #bookstagram #theycantallbewinners #bookish #booklover #bookworm #booknerd #iheartbooks #alwaysreading #noseinabook #reader #read #reading #bookaholic #bibliophile

April wrap-up - I knew my streak of getting through the books on my monthly TBR would come to an end eventually, & April has proven to be it. Truth be told, I thought it would end up being a one-book month for me, but the ‘Nap Gods’ smiled on me these past two days & I was able to squeak a second one through in the nick of time. The deets: 4.0 stars: PARADISE - Abdulrazak Gurnah 3.0 stars: THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN - Mark Twain Sunny days, an increasingly active child, & playoff hockey have all contributed to a slow-down in my reading life, but I have no complaints. Life is so good. How was your reading this month? What are you most looking forward to for May? #aprilreadingwrapup #whatireadinapril #whatireadthismonth #monthlyreadingwrapup #theadventuresofhuckleberryfinn #marktwain #paradisebook #abdulrazakgurnah #whatimreading #readingaddict #springreading #bookclubreads #readingmytbr #nevernotreading #noseinabook #bookworm

Megan Miranda is always a good read. I was hooked quickly, thoroughly creeped out and anxious to figure out what was going on! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Hazel returns to town for her father’s funeral but it’s upstaged by the gruesome discovery of a car, hidden by the lake for many years. When a second car is found in the cove near her house, Hazel begins to think some foul play has happened. . . . #daughterofmine #meganmiranda #mystery #tuesday #suspense #bibliophile #bookstagram #voraciousreader #ig_books #bookstagrammer #booklover #fiction #fictionbooks #highlyrecommended #novels #readersofinstagram #goodreads #goodreadschallenge2024 #goodreaders #kindlebooks #bookworm #booknerd #noseinabook #ig_books #bookreviewerswanted #bookish #bookreviewsofinstagram #ilovebooks #readerlife #girlswhoread #aprilreads

Review Spring by Ali Smith “Things can change over time, what looks fixed and pinned and closed in a life can change and open, and what’s unthinkable and impossible at one time will easily be possible in another." I loved this third installment of the Seasons Quartet - I connected with the storyline and the characters on a far deeper level than I did with Winter (I still can't fathom the bits of earth floating in the air near the ceiling!). Three generations come together in Spring, all hoping to be seen and recognised in their own ways. There's love, loss, politics, Brexit, art, literature, refugees, film-making, camper vans and imaginary daughters. The prose is so good - almost lyrical - and full of fleeting imagery. Brittany works in a detention centre for illegal migrants so it was interesting to read Spring in a week where the Government has approved the plan to ship refugees to Rwanda. Brittany thinks she is a 'good' person, but realises on her journey to Scotland with Florence that she's losing her humanity because she has stopped seeing the detainees as people. She is becoming numb to their distress, joins in the mockery by other officers. I was relieved to see that Brittany goes on to live with more awareness after her adventure. I really hope that Summer lives up to expectations (in the literary and meteorological senses!). . . . #WorcesterBookstagrammer #Spring #AliSmith #ReadThis #WhatIRead #WhatToReadNext #LoveToRead #Bookish #BookChat #BookishThoughts #BookRecommendation #BookObsessed #LiteraryFiction #NoseInABook #BookBlogger #ReadingInWorcs #Bookstagram #BookReviewer #SingleBookshare #BookPile #ReadingAddict #AllTheBooks #RecommendedReading #BooksLovelyBooks #ReadingEverywhere #BooksAndTeaMakeKatyHappy

When you have a comfort read checked out, and know of a lactose free pizza place ✨🖤 worth the 40 min drive because the views are stunning anyhow🎀 my waitress went “so i have to tell you i read book one, hope its not weird to mention. BUT I LOVED IT!” “Oh honey no. Not weird at all, you def need to read the rest. Book 2 MMC is a fave but book 4 MFC i relate to easier. These are comfort reads. I need to buy the set to stop using library.” “So you’re just reading outside of your house?” “Beats trying to control my face and tongue in shitty company and calling it a date.” “You’re not wrong there.” 💅🏼🤝🖤 #noseinabook #twistedgamesbook #twistedseriesanahuang #pizzapizza🍕 #justgirliethings
