My scale is packed up with our other household goods. This morning I freaked out internally when I realized I wouldn’t be able to weigh myself until we get everything delivered on the 22nd. My sweet sweet husband then said “Babe, you have to get off the scale and live your life.” And he is RIGHT! I have been so scared of gaining weight back that I’ve become incredibly dependent on weighing myself too often. That stops now. It’s time to start listening to my body, trusting that I’ve built the habits I need to be successful and healthy and not live in fear. I am the first one to tell you not to watch the number on the scale but I am also human and would like to see that number fall. However, it hasn’t. It hasn’t moved a single digit in months even thought I’ve cut out sugar (except this birthday week and whew! It’s killed me) and the fact that I am@lifting heavier. You know what has moved???? The notch on my belt when I put it on yesterday! It’s smaller. The size of my leggings…smaller. My jeans fit better. My shirts fit different. The muscle mass is up and my fat mass is down. It isn’t about the scale ladies (and guys) it’s about the way you feel. The way our clothes fit. The confidence you feel when you look in the mirror!!! These 2 pics are 1 year apart. 1st pic was 7 months post WLS 2nd pic was 19 months post WLS. I see such a difference in these 2 pictures. BUT the scale is pretty much the same. It must be hell to be a woman. This is what my husband said to me a few days after Christmas. He quickly made sure I knew that he was not being facetious. For days I had been complaining about feeling fat, having too much salt and sugar, not moving my body and just my general feelings of disdain for myself, my body, my weight. I had been out of my routine and had not been out of the house, not eating well, not going 100 miles an hour, not dressing or putting on make-up or doing anything “productive.” So, my natural default setting for wallowing in these uncomfortable feelings is self-loathing. And correct me if I am wrong here, but I think that may be the “factory setting” for a lot of women. If you’re not perfect, if you had too much cake, or too many glasses of wine, or you didn’t get off the couch for one whole day (some of the best things in life!), you are now a worthless blob of under achieving cells, bloated cells at that. My husband says women are so strange, and to him, we are. I hear men at my moving company embellishing their weight to each other, but in a way that you would never hear come out of a woman’s mouth. “Yeah, I’m 210, gonna get to 230, you not gonna be able to grab me.” Meanwhile, we are over here dying over 3lbs of water weight and some tight buttons on our pants. Child, go pee, it will go away, and if it doesn’t well then, someone will have a little bit harder time “grabbing” you. I have refused to step on a scale for about a month because I have been terrified of the possible holiday weight gain, as if that weight defines who I am, my heart, my purpose, my love. But you know what? It doesn’t mean a damn thing. Ladies, can we just live our lives, like our best lives, and stop beating ourselves up over the smallest things, like 3 pounds of holiday bloat? In case no one has told you, there’s no special secret sauce formulated into January 1. Nor does the end of the year mean you need to scrap your goals and either neglect your hearts desires or begin to ‘go hard’ obsessing and hustling to get to some perceived finish line. Honestly, because I had and continue to have conversations concerning the balance between being ok with setting goals and being comfortable in your own skin; I’ve come to the realization that we need candid conversations in our circles & communities that notice the struggles, heal broken hearts and quiet the lies. Until then, scales (literal and algorithmic) will always try to substitute & counterfeit confidence. I was THAT girl. I AM that girl. Holy Spirit thank you for your grace and mercy that’s new everyday!! 🙌🏾🥹 We all face these ‘numbers & scales’ but our true identity isn’t found there. This was me about 15 years ago. The me that LOVED cupcakes and anything sweet. This was actually the day when I realized that no matter how much my brain LOVED cupcakes my body was over it and had been from some time. This was the day I noticed just how bad I felt. Cranky, achy, puffy, tired and more interested in cupcakes than people. This was also the day I started moving toward the person I am today. Today, I still love cupcakes and yes I will eat a cupcake if I want to BUT it's rare that I actually want to. I don't like to feel blah and cupcakes (and other junky food) make me feel blah. I know I can eat anything I want but what I want to eat has change. It's possible to actually NOT WANT the junky food. To walk by a plate of cookies and think those look good but also know you aren't interested. Imagine never thinking... 'I can't believe I ate that I didn't even want it.' or 'That totally wasn't worth it I wish I hadn't eaten it.' or 'Oh my god, I can't believe how many cookies I ate!" I'm a board certified nutritionist and a certified life coach. I started this page in August of 2020 as a form of accountability for myself. Here we are in August of 2023, marking another year of hard work and lessons learned. I have learned that the smallest version of myself is not the happiest version of myself. I have learned that no one knows (or cares) what your scale says. Another reason to 📣 #getoffthescale !! BMI is used widely as a health indicator in the medical world, but it has some major flaws. It's weight ➗️ height, so it doesn't take into account muscle. Many athletes and folks who are more active/lift weights are mistakenly classified as overweight or obese according to this calculation. So, what are the alternatives? 👉 you can measure circumference. (Waist to hip ratio is a great indicator for health purposes) 👉 bioelectric impedence machines are super affordable now. They give you a breakdown of water, fat, skeletal, and muscle weight. The only flaw is that it can over-estimate body fat in very lean individuals. I want to tell you a story… About the SCALE . CLEARLY this client of mine has made significant progress. (You should see her arms! 💪🏼) The first photo was her start point. The middle photo was about 6 months into her journey. At this point, her scale movement DRASTICALLY slowed. This is NOT uncommon! This is very NORMAL! . She felt discouraged. I pleaded with her to trust the process and keep going. MOST people would have given up at the point her scale stopped moving and eventually reverted back to the start point. But when you keep PUSHING through and make that decision to stop giving up, THAT is where the magic happens. The first and middle photo reflect her 22 pound weight loss. But between the middle and last photo, there hasn’t really been scale activity. A little up, a little down…it bounces around a bit but is pretty consistent. Despite those numbers. She is CLEARLY still making progress! You can see fat loss and amazing muscle definition coming in. Her shoulders are gorgeous, her triceps are showing, abs coming through and her legs….oh my! Her legs look so fit and strong! And to think she could have given up because of what that STUPID scale showed! . How many almonds can I have How many calories should I be eating The number on my scale The number of calories burned on my watch How much exercise do I have to do to burn off this (bad food I ate) How many hours/minutes until I can eat 30 day challenges (ALL the challenges) limiting carbs working out 6 days a week If I eat this many calories every day I'll weigh this much in 4 weeks I went over my calories yesterday so I'll eat less today 𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠... It was borderline obsessive...I had so many rules. That's not living. Fast forward to today: I eat pretty much the same structure every day, not the same foods, but the same "template" if you will, shooting for a protein goal. I lift 4 days a week and get some kind of a walk in most days. I haven't weighed myself in months, yet I see my muscles still getting a bit bigger and my clothes look good. I have so much more headspace now that I've eliminated all that noise. That's what I want for you too, you don't have to spend hours in the gym or eliminate carbs. Where are the serial weighers…. 😬🤦‍♂️🙋🏼‍♀️ The scales absolutely have their place and they’re a good tool to track progress if you have fat to lose. What I see time and time again though is people weighing constantly expecting to see change and when they don’t see a number they like - they get disheartened and stop altogether. The number will never change if that’s your focus. Focus on the journey - the daily habits, moving, nourishing, drinking water, being consistent. Then weigh in once a month (2-3 days after your period if you get one so it’s the same time every month). If you’ve had a big weekend, big carb day or drinking day the day before - wait a few days. Let that water retention subside. Creating habits is hard as an adult. It’s time to get off the scale and have other goals in your life. When the only thing you focus on is the scale, life gets depressing and hard and when you get there, you certainly have this so what I’ve done this what now? Have some different goals, such as feeling good being able to run around with your grandchildren or Dogs, or just being able to run up and down the stairs without noticing ….. And what you will find is it naturally you will become more confident in yourself, and that is my biggest goal!

I cannot agree with this more. I don’t know how the obsession with the number on the scale started. Whoever started it, is an idiot. It’s such a small piece of the health puzzle. Yet it consumes our thoughts, and it’s been emphasized as the end all be all. Our weight fluctuates on the daily for so many natural reasons, so saying that it’s what we should use as our read on our body, is like saying the wind will always blow from the same direction, and wind is the only thing you need to tell the weather. That number on the scale, STOP BEING SO OBSESSED ABOUT IT! GET OFF THE SCALE! Yes, the scale can be a useful tool in weightloss. But more often I see it becomes more discouraging than helpful. Most women I know are married to a NUMBER. They just obsess about seeing that number. If it doesn’t show, they punish themselves with more cardio. I was scrolling through my pictures and came across this one picture that stood out the most. This was at the beginning of covid. Right now I weigh the most I’ve weighed outside of pregnancy! 💥 Per BMI, I stay “overweight” even when I get on the bodybuilding stage, due to the weight of my muscle mass (and yes, some fat, because I like staying alive). Weight can be a metric of progress but must be understood. Less is not always more. I like taking up space and having some weight. I’m a big person with a big personality and feeling strong and confident is valuable. I can’t tell you how many women come to me saying they want to like how they look in clothes, feel healthier, grow some shape to their body (that tiresome word- “tone”) and yet they are not prepared to see body weight go up or really anywhere but down. Do I help people “lose weight?” Absolutely. I’ve got countless clients who have lost 20, 40, 60, even 80+ pounds. But it’s not just about those pounds. Get off the scale and get in the gym. Let’s talk diets. It occurred to me I’ve been “on a diet” for half my life. 😧😧 which is crazy. I’m not even properly over weight!! But there’s a weight I’m happier with than other weights I’ve been. I’ve tried most Keto- expensive & meat heavy Juicing- love it but time consuming,doesn’t really fit in with family life Weight watchers- made me a bit obsessive about points & weighing food & myself. Slimming world- made me binge on “free” foods Sugar free- prob the best for me but still expensive if you wanted to make a lot of the sugar free treats. Clean eating- great but expensive & time consuming,made me a bit obsessed. Special K diet- lasted til lunch Slim fast- yuck..or as we say in Aberdeen..gads min I’m fully aware that typing obsessed so many times is a ME problem and it’s in my personality. 🤪 However..I haven’t even stepped on the scales this year. That’s unheard of. Like..I’m a weigh twice a day kinda gal. I’ve kinda naturally lost some weight by sticker saving & exercise. Less refined sugar. More Protein & fats with every meal. I’m probably been more focused on cost but I don’t buy lots of ready meals or junk as I didn’t before. It’s not a bargain if you don’t need it. Reasonably Inexpensive good fats sources are tinned sardines, seeds, coconut milk, olive oil & nuts. I’ve found avocados,salmon,coconut oil, pine nuts all reduced recently. I’m not going to parade down the high street in a bikini any time soon but I no longer hate my body. I put more emphasis on health. I’m eating & feeding my family in the most cost effective way. Bottom pics: January 3rd, 142lbs Top: April 2nd, 136lbs Barely any difference in weight between the two and why?? Because the scale doesn’t f**king matter people. It’s all about how you feel with yourself, how you’re fitting in your clothes, how you performing in the gym/sport/etc. Those things are all so much more important than what’s on the scale. The biggest difference in these pictures for me is how I’m feeling. I was not feeling comfortable with myself and now I feel 100 times better! And all I had to do is be a little more conscious about the food I put in my mouth (snacks are life obvi 💁🏼‍♀️). I was MIA but now I’m baaaaack!! I’ve been on vacay ❄️⛷❄️ and it was awesome. I ate and drank all the things, enjoyed all the moments, and it was good for the soul. Thinking about my trip and how much fun we had got me thinking about how I used to let my food choices ruin parts of my moments. I used to obsess over whether I had “all my food” just right no matter what the situation was. It would ruin my mood if I didn’t. I couldn’t just let it be. I think it had a lot to do with what I represented and the pressure I put on myself as an example, but while I know I am an example of health/fitness, I know I have a responsibility to share real life perspectives about how I live. Which I feel like at CK we do and that’s what we teach, but with myself I have always put too much pressure on myself. I have a message for you if you are a person who makes your food choices motivated by some kind of guilt. Just sayin’. I'm finding 2 midlife camps. Camp 1: Stopped caring. Don't care. But, internally struggling with body image and so frustrated. Negative self talk abounds. Camp 2: In hot pursuit of the care of their bodies, to the extent that it's become a priority, maybe to the point of an idol. I have generally lived in camp 2 most of my life. Until menopause when I packed up my RV and drove over to camp 1. Then, I found FASTer Way, and headed back home to camp 2. Now, I've realized I'm #notacamper and I am on a journey to find the town of #wholeness where my Father lives. When I lived in Camp 2, I never thought I was idolizing my body. In fact, up till last year, I was caring righteously for it. I was fighting for longevity and boosted immunity and punching old age in the face. I've since learned that I want to blow up camp. Neither one has great amenities and camp hot pursuit is NO BETTER than camp don't care. We are meant to live in the Father's household until judgment day. His address is your heart and He wants our bodies for his glory, not our own. What does that look like for you? For me, I no longer work out in obligation, but for celebration of what I can do. I no longer damn my body for aging, but prize it for birthing two amazing humans and holding me up through the years. I no longer long to fit in a certain size, but buy clothes that fit my body.
