After Twilight, I stopped reading books with supernatural beings for awhile, which was just a crying shame. I actually quite like a lot of them, but the market was so saturated with werewolves and vampires. I did join the supernatural foray again after a little break, and I’m so glad I did. I am kind of obsessed with opening lines, and that includes creating the perfect opening line for anything that I write myself. It might be something that takes hours to craft perfectly. One of my favorite openings is to the book The Foretelling by Alice Hoffman (and also serves as a fav character introduction). “I was born out of sorrow, so my mother named me Rain”. I’m definitely going to some R&R ✨ Let me know what you have planned for the long weekend! • • QOTD: If you could recommend people only one of the books you read this month, which would you pick? • • ✨ August Wrap Up ✨ I had an excellent reading month in August with a total of 13 books 🎉 Check out my star breakdown and mini-reviews below✨ • • Trail of Lightning: 4.75 ⭐️ • Excellent worldbuilding, great characters, fast-paced, but had issues with the delivery of exposition and scene transitions ✨ Fruits Basket, Vol. 5-8: 5 ⭐️ ✨ Scythe: 3.5 ⭐️ • The story had a really compelling idea that was fairly well-done, though I wish there was more depth to the characters, especially the mustache-twirling antagonist ✨ The Name of the Wind: 3 ⭐️ • Loved the narrative frame and focus on the idea of storytelling itself. But, the treatment of female characters and the intense male gaze of the narrative made this hard to fully enjoy ✨ Kitchen Princess Omnibus Vol 2: 3.5 ⭐️ ✨ Sleeping Giants: 4 ⭐️ • A gripping sci-fi romp that asks big questions, but the narrative style can distance you from the characters ✨ The Poppy War: 4.75 ⭐️ • Probably the most impressive fantasy debut♥️ I wish more care was given to some of the side characters ✨ All Your Perfects: 4 ⭐️ • An emotionally effecting story, though the ending wraps things up a tad too neatly ✨ Sky in the Deep: 3.75 ⭐️ • Great relationships, a strong & vulnerable heroine, but the ending feels as if it’s missing 30 pages and the two tribes in this novel could have used fleshing out ✨ Strange the Dreamer: 5 ⭐️ • Laini Taylor has done it again with incredible world building, complex characters, and an ending that left me breathless 😍 • • Challenges: #ofthebookaug18 “Before I go, I just want to say you were fantastic. Now I just hope the weather corporates * So today is all about this months wrap up and I managed to finish three new books (kind of...I haven’t technically finished Cress yet but I only have a little bit left to go so my goal is to get it done by tonight) and I reread two other books this month. My favorite book by far has got to be The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. Although that’s not a total surprise seeing as it is comprised of all the things I love: Romantic contemporary, adult setting, and a hate-to-love relationship❤️I’m so glad I read it for the #waywardpages book club. Honor Among Thieves - 4⭐️ A space-based sci-fi set in the belly of sentient leviathan spaceship. A very strange story but I loved the diverse cast. . Binti - 5⭐️ A gorgeous africanfuturistic novella about race, tension btwn tradition & change, & misunderstandings between cultures. . Summer Days & Summer Nights - 4⭐️ I enjoyed these short stories but beware many are bittersweet. . Gemina - 5⭐️ Holy night I think I loved this more than the first book. Best banter ever. . Heist Society - 4⭐️ a fun story about a daughter of a thief plotting her own thiefy things. . What’s a fun project type thing you’ve done lately? For me, it was creating and doing my own monthly photo challenge. And I’m about to get super emotional so buckle up people. As of writing this, there are 1,318 photos on the tag I created for this challenge. One thousand, three hundred, and eighteen. I was convinced there would barely be 100. Your support of my little Doctor Who themed challenge gives me so much joy and I cannot begin to fully express how happy you all have made me. I don’t get a lot of support in my “real life” for the things I’m into, so seeing people participating and enjoying a thing I created is a big freaking deal to me. And I swear I’m going to catch up on shouting out some of your posts to the tag. I feel like huge jack ass for dropping the ball on that and I shall right my wrongs. Happy Friday bookworms! It’s the last day of #WeTheBooksAug18 and we’re wrapping up our month of reading. . . I finished the Red Queen series with War Storm. Not the ending I was hoping for and zero closure but I’m happy I stuck through till the end of the series. . . All the Bright Places was a great read! I predicted the ending so it wasn’t as sad as everyone said it would be but I really enjoyed it. . . Reign the Earth was FANTASTIC. Such an underrated book that should be talked about so much more. I got serious GOT vibes from it and the story was so unique. A must read for all fantasy fans. . . And finally, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, was a very cute read and I finally got to watch the movie afterwards and loved it too. A bit too ya for me, but a light fluffy read. . . It’s Friday and time for my August wrap-up! This month I attempted to only read books that were recommended to me by others and for the most part I stuck with that goal. I’m glad I did because there were quite a few that I really loved. One of my 5🌟 reads was Being Mortal by Atul Gawande and was recommended by my cousin. I’ve intermittently participated in a bunch of challenges this month, and almost all of them have ‘August wrap-up’ as today’s prompt. Since August is my first month really trying to do this whole #bookstagram thing, I thought I’d share a few things I’ve learned from the process! 1. Taking good photos of books takes FOREVER. I’ve dedicated far too many hours of my life to setting these up, and I definitely need to get faster at it. 2. The more times a book has been read, the harder it is to photograph well. This makes it kinda tricky to showcase your favourites… 3. Foil titles and accents may be beautiful, but WOW they mess with the light. 4. I’m pretty sure most bookstagrammers have made Faustian pacts at some point because some of what they do is IMPOSSIBLE. I took this photo hanging one-handed off a stepladder to try and get the right angle – and then the autofocus stopped working. 5. Turns out if you spend all your time taking pictures of books… you don’t actually have time to read many… Jokes aside, I’ve also learned a bunch about photography and setting up aesthetically pleasing displays, and I’m excited to try out new layouts and setups in September. Well here we are! The last day of the month and wrap up time. I read a total of 32 books this month. Never have I read that many before and it’s basically thanks to audiobooks 😂 I get so much more done that way. 🌿 Happy Friday, everyone! I’m getting on a plane today to fly to Mexico to see my parents for the weekend! Woo hoo! 🌿 It’s also the end of the month, so Wrap Up time it is! 🌿 Hands down, the best book I read this month was Summer of Salt by @katrinalenobooks. It was included in a @shelflovereads box and it was such an amazing read. I’m still not over it. 😩💙 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (All the stars!) 🌿 I also read 3 MG books: -Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters ⭐️⭐️⭐️ -The Magic Misfits by Neil Patrick Harris ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (I gave it an extra star for the gorgeous illustrations) -The Legend of Greg by Chris Rylander ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌿 And the 4th volume of Saga, which felt a little off from the first three, but it was still really good, so ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌿 And then: -Beyond a Darkened Shore by Jessica Leake: it wasn’t perfect but I still really enjoyed this Celtic/Norse inspired YA fantasy book ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 -Literary Witches ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (I highly recommend this one if you love witchy things!) -And Still I Rise by Maya Angelou ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌿 And, sadly, there were 2 DNFs this month as well: 1) The Hating Game by Sally Thorne (audiobook), which I read with the #waywardpages Book Club. It was terrible! Hey bookstagrammers! Can you believe August has come to an end? Time is flying by it seems and suddenly its time for another monthly wrap up. I consciously tried to reduce the number of books I read this month to spend more time studying but still ended up reading 12 books. But a lot of these books were really short books or short for me, I guess I should say 😅. The full list and my ratings will be put up in the stories if you want to check them out. I found one of my favourite reads of 2018 this month with The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, thanks to @frenchflaps_and_deckleedges and I can’t stop gushing about it. My answer, recently to all the qotds has been this book. Its both thought-provoking and funny and comes highly, very highly recommended from me. I did plan to finish 1984 and Aadujeevitham for my book clubs but somehow these books got set aside for an endless stream of tomorrows until finally it was too late. But I do plan to complete them sometime next month, hopefully 🤞. QOTD : Do you ever consciously take a break from reading? I am the type who is always in a frenzy to finish reading all the books of the world before I run out of time but sometimes when I have read too much for a long time or if the books have been intense reads, I do take a break. What was your most anticipated book for this month? . I think for me it was Seafire. There are a lot of books that were released this month that I'm looking forward to, but that's number one... give me all the books about all female pirate crews please! . What was your top read of this month? ✨ JULY & AUGUST WRAP UP ✨ These last few months I’ve been reading way less than usual, so until I pick the pace back up, I’m only doing wrap ups every second month! My favourite book of this month though has been Golden Son so far! However, I still haven’t finished Mistborn (I still have tonight, when I took this photo I thought I’d have more time to read before now 😂😂) so it’s still a contender too! The only one I can say I hauled was Grace and Fury by @tracythewriter . It was included in the August @owlcrate and I love the special edition cover! That flame with the rose 😍🌹🔥!! 🌹 QOTD —>> What is your favorite bookstore and how often do you get to go there? 🌹 AOTD —>> I once went to a bookstore called the Tattered Cover in Denver and I LOVED it. But I live in California, so I can’t really revisit that often 😩. There was also this other bookstore I went to, and I can’t remember the name, but it was in a sweet little town called Chipping Camden in the southeast of England. It was such a tiny bookshop full of old books ❤️. When I stepped out its door and onto the cobbled street, I felt like a real life Belle ☺️.
