National Register Nominations are just one type of project we work on at Rosin Preservation. Since February of 2006, our team has written 178 nominations, which including seven Multiple Property Designation Forms (MPDFs) covering 2357 resources. With all the documentation required, nominations can run 30 to 50 pages for an individual building, and more than 100 pages for a district. These are DEEP dives into why a building is significant. "We've come a long way from the 4-page nominations of the 1970s," says Rachel Consolloy, Rosin Preservation COO . A nomination is about more than how pretty a building is or who slept there. They often reflect a building's connection to the forces of history that shaped its street, neighborhood, city, town, or state. We have completed successful nominations of buildings for their connection to patterns of commercial development, educational philosophy, civil rights history, and urban renewal. I spent the last few days in Columbus visiting family, so of course had to pop in to one of my favorite bookstores on the planet, @gramercybooksbexley. It is walking distance from my brother in law and sister in law’s house, which is such a treat! ❤️📚 I was so excited to see signed copies of Distant Sons by @timjohnston.writer on the shelves. This book is so excellent and would be such a wonderful gift for anyone who appreciates literary mystery. It is smart, well paced, atmospheric and unforgettable. I continue to think about it months after reading it, which is a testament to the author’s ability to create characters with real depth. In Distant Sons we meet Sean and Dan, two young men with mysterious pasts trying to establish new futures for themselves in a small Wisconsin town. Unfortunately, the town is still haunted by the disappearances of 3 boys decades earlier. As Sean and Dan embark on a construction job for a local recluse, the painful legacy of the disappearances and the simmering violence beneath the surface of the town collide. This is a page turner, but it also tugs at your heart, which is why I continue to think about it. And now we are off to Wisconsin! Missing Columbus, our family and particularly my sweet baby niece and baby nephew already. Safe travels to anyone hitting the roads or the airports this weekend! WHOA it’s the holidays and we haven’t posted nearly as much as normal due to general craziness with children, wrapping things up before year end, travel, etc. Oh and we have a two hour delay this morning for school here in CT due to this massive storm! Hooray! 🤪 I read this in November and just loved it. The Christmas Orphans Club feels like a night out in Manhattan with your best friends during the most magical time of year. @beccamfreeman tells the story of best friends Hannah and Finn, inseparable since college and now living in Manhattan. They spend every Christmas together due to painful family situations, and we visit them in this novel every Christmas season over the course of 10 years. Hannah is an often frustrating protagonist, but not altogether unrelatable. Her desperation to hold onto Finn, and preserve their relationship just as it was when they first became close, is understandable when you consider the loss of her parents. Finn is also a complete delight and absolutely adores her, despite being in love with a man. I loved seeing these characters in past and present, and their evolutions felt authentic. Having spent many memorable moments in Manhattan with college friends over the years, I loved the nostalgia I felt while reading this. It warmed my heart, and honestly, that’s what I want right now in this often frenetic and overwhelming season. ❤️ I have not listened to the author’s podcast, but I would love to over our Christmas travels! I know this book is all over bookstagram but it brought me joy, so I wanted to share. We will be back to posting more very soon! Hang in there friends! I loved this book. I always turn to romance or “lighter” reads after a heavy one, and this is actually not that…I absolutely laughed and my heart was warmed, but this is, mostly, a beautiful rumination on profound grief. Kate’s life is turned upside down when she loses her young husband. She must parent their toddler while wrestling with her unimaginable loss (and his) as well as attempting to maintain her career. When Kate and her boss, Hugh, are stranded on a business trip together due to an unforeseen weather event, Kate realizes that all is not what it seems when it comes to Hugh, and suddenly she is questioning everything. Her voice is SO relatable, and I instantly wanted to be friends with her. I loved watching Kate’s evolution on these pages, and I loved her relationship with her husband. I also adore Hugh. And Grace. And Charlie. And her hilarious mother. I laughed and cried more than once, but I just didn’t want this book to end. I would love more chapters in Kate’s story. This novel is set in Australia, and I have discovered that novels set in Australia nearly ALWAYS work well for me. And I’ve never been there! Perhaps I should go! My reading has been slow for the last three weeks. The world is so very heavy, and I just have not been able to focus. I did read a literary mystery that I LOVED and will post about soon, but first, I wanted to share my thoughts on Kill Show—and it’s Halloween 🎃 so this felt appropriate! First of all, I read this basically in one sitting. The storytelling here is from multiple perspectives surrounding the disappearance of a teenage girl. Her disappearance catches the eye of a reality show producer, who begins documenting everyone and everything around the case, and quickly, momentum and coverage builds. Where is Sara Parcell? And what happened? The story is not only told from multiple perspectives, but also from varying timelines, so we know from the outset that a tragedy has occurred. That said, the journey, and all the players involved, are fascinating. I couldn’t turn these pages fast enough. If you are feeling overwhelmed and might be seeking an escape read, this is perfect. You will be totally immersed. I read The Vaster Wilds immediately followed by North Woods completely accidentally—and it was the perfect pairing. These two novels are both absolutely brilliant, unique and unforgettable—and I think they found their way into my hands at the perfect time. Natalie and I decided to read The Vaster Wilds as one of our September Common Reads because we both adore Lauren Groff. She is just unmatched as a literary talent. The Vaster Wilds did not disappoint. I was transported to Jamestown (I think) and utterly transfixed by the two weeks I spent with the protagonist female as she struggled to survive in this incredibly challenging and horrific environment. There were barely any descriptors offered surrounding her physical being, but I felt every emotion and every physical ailment like it was my own because of Groff’s incredible writing. This book is atmosphereic, gripping, and relentless. I could not put it down. I loved the cover of North Woods and picked it up one evening while cooking dinner. I could not stop reading. Every single one of the stories that make up the history of this property in New England is riveting. I’ve seen other reviewers say that the novel dragged until the end, but I disagree. I think the final two stories were certainly the most heart wrenching, but the way each of them wound together to create a beautiful sense of place and time…I thought it was brilliant. So brilliant. And reading these two expertly crafted LITERARY novels back to back was an unexpected and beautiful treat. My dad died on the first of July, and my reading in the aftermath has been…strange. I’m devouring thrillers and audiobooks. I finished Tom Lake on the 2nd of July and I just don’t think my heart can take anything that beautiful and moving until it heals a little more. But if you have any ideas for me, I’d love to hear them. ❤️ @lisajewelluk has written another thrilling and unputdownable thriller. I actually texted a colleague @athenabooksog when I finished “None of This is True” and said that I thought it was her best—and I’m a Lisa Jewell completist, so I feel confident in that statement. My colleague agreed, for what it’s worth! In None of This Is True, we meet Alix Summers, a fashionable and wealthy Londoner who also has a podcast. On her 45th birthday, she meets Josie Fair, also celebrating her 45th birthday. Josie becomes fascinated with Alix and asks if she could perhaps interest Alix in covering her life on her podcast. Alix agrees and what follows is single white female meets essentially any thriller about an unhinged human worming their way, little by little, into your life. It’s unsettling and feels uncomfortably feasible in Jewell’s deft hands. I solved “the mystery” fairly early on, but was still surprised by the details and also by how many different twists and turns this story took. It also absolutely ends with an open door for a sequel, which I can’t wait for. Did you read this one? Anyone else feel like thrillers help your mind recover from trauma, as strange as that may sound? I also read a truly outstanding romance that I’ll be reviewing soon, so there’s that. I just loved this memoir told in essays so, so much. @espassarella’s voice is SO relatable—her stories of motherhood, Manhattan real estate, marriage and family made me laugh and cry (on an airplane…) and I loved every single page. I know that most people consume essay collections in bits and pieces, but I could not put this down. It Was An Ugly Couch Anyway refers to a couch that the author could not part ways with from her Manhattan apartment because of its sentimental value to her. The apartment was on the market and the couch was “ruining” the listing photos, but it was hard to say goodbye. There are so many hard topics broached in these pages—a health crisis with her husband, in law relationships, the pandemic’s impact on NYC, and the most maddening and drawn out apartment sale of all time. But, within each of these vignettes, there is so, so much humor. The trials and tribulations of motherhood are front and center on each page, because kids are all consuming, and I saw so much of myself reflected in her words. I just loved this reading experience so much. I was so sad to finish this beautiful little book. There was also a LOVELY shoutout to my beloved @davidsoncollege, so clearly it was a 5 star read for me (although it would have been anyway). If you love @marylauraphilpott, try this. Last Saturday, I sat down on the couch, the puppy snuggled in, and I read The Five Star Weekend in one sitting. I wait for @elinhilderbrand’s newest release every June with so much anticipation, not just because I am a huge fan, but because her releases always signify the beginning of summer for me. May and June are insanity around here (and for all parents, let’s be honest), and opening my @bookofthemonth box and seeing her novel provided some salve. And then, no surprise, I loved it! The Five-Star Weekend tells us the story of Hollis, a native of Nantucket who returns to the island to mourn the sudden loss of her husband. Hollis is now a famous influencer, and decides that to help process her grief, she will invite 4 women to join her at her gorgeous Nantucket home who have had pivotal influences on her life—her childhood best friend, her college roommate, her “we raised our children together” friend, and a woman she has never met in person but has become close to through her social media following. The goal is to enjoy each other, celebrate friendship, and toast to the future. But…all of these women have secrets, and one is BIG. This novel is the perfect beach read, as usual, but it’s also just so enjoyable and transportive—I felt like I was back on ACK, where I have only been with close friends, and that feels right. Summer is officially here…I’m zipping up our bags for the lake right now, actually. I passed this novel onto a dear friend who is heading to beautiful Nantucket today on her boat, and I know it will get her right in the summer spirit. My main goal is to send out a few more queries for Shadow of the Draekin. I'm hopeful for this book and I love it so much, but I have a gut feeling it might not be the one to secure me representation. I haven't even recieved a partial request yet after 27 queries, but I know YA fantasy is difficult to break into. I finished this in one sitting over the weekend (rainy and cold), and while I couldn’t put it down, I didn’t particularly enjoy it. I was so excited to read this because it had been described as a “rut buster” by people I trust, and I’ve been in a reading hangover since finishing Hello, Beautiful. The premise is this: A famous reclusive/incendiary author hosts a reading retreat for 4 female authors at her estate in the Berkshires. Our protagonist and her ex best friend, Wren, are among the 4 chosen. The estate, the author and her assistant are beyond creepy, but the promise of a published novel and a massive advance motivates the 4 women to push forward….and then a storm hits and everything goes way, way off the rails. I think my main issue here was that this novel was promoted as a fun thriller, when it’s really verging on gothic horror. I do not enjoy that genre, and thus, I did not enjoy this. I had a suspicion it might go that way when the famous author’s genre was fantasy/horror and probably should have put it down. But alas…. Anyone out there read and love this? Obviously since I couldn’t put it aside, I enjoyed the writing. The content was not for me, though. Suggestions for a book slump? Natalie is struggling with this too right now. I am reading an ARC on my kindle that I’m really, really enjoying so I hope to have a positive review to post this weekend! Happy Friday, friends. Babel is Dark academia with emphasis on academia in the first half, and emphasis on dark in the second half. The story unfolds rather slowly as we follow the young boy Robin who is "saved" From China, when his mother dies of disease. The savior in question is an Englishman who takes Robin in so he can study languages. Robin studies hard and is sent to Oxford, where he will studdy at the tower Babel. Where he will become a translator and wield the power of words in Silver, Silver that can work magic. Babel is told in a storylike way drawing the reader into the world of semantics, hermeneutics, translator work and magic. But Babel also tells the bigger story of wealth and the distribution of wealth in the world. Of colonisation and taking resources from third world countries. It portrays the story of being "the other" in a white, rich, male, hetro world such as Oxford University in the 19th century. Both Robin and his three classmates are all minorities facing racism and misogyny daily. Two women and three of them born outside of England. Babel is a rather long story and for the first 300 pages I would say the story itself is a bit unclear, and the points made feel a bit repetitive. I’ve been patiently waiting for the pub day of JoJo Moyes’ newest novel to post my review, and here we are! Finally! When I’m awake in the middle of the night, I often read something light on my kindle to bring on the sleepies. This was perfect for that, at the beginning. It then became a much deeper look at female friendships, and their critical importance in a woman’s life. They are foundational. They are anchoring. They are affirming. They are life giving. That message, in this otherwise very cute, quirky and lovely new novel, rang true loud and clear, and warms my heart when I think of this book. So we made it! January is no more and it is finally February! Winner! Oh and the school is closed, so there are two small people at home too - slightly less of a win! 🙄 This was book 1 of 2023 and I really enjoyed it, the writing is superb and thought provoking and gives an interesting insight in to an undisclosed mental illness and the effect this has, not only on the main character of Martha, but all those around her. I think the last Stephen King book I read was 11/22/63, back in 2013 (I only remember because I was pregnant with my son and flew to Florida to visit family). When I saw that #saturdaybookstaclub was doing a buddy read for Fairy Tale, I figured why not? I’m so glad I joined in! This is a chunk of a book, and definitely has its slower parts, but I really enjoyed it overall. It draws some parallels to the fairy tales we’re all familiar with, but is it’s own story altogether. Charlie is a 17 year old kid when he heard a dog howling, alerting him to his elderly neighbor that fell off a ladder. Charlie calls 911, offers to take care of the dog, Radar, and ends up also caring for Mr. Bowditch once he gets out of the hospital. In fact, when Mr. Bowditch dies, Charlie inherits the house, a bunch of gold, Radar, and a tape with a story that is impossible to believe…yet, could it be true? Charlie finds himself on a journey to a parallel world, complete with monsters, mermaids, and a quest to save not only Radar, but the inhabitants of this world he stumbled into.
