Weightlifting Post 📫 🏋‍♂️ Some stuff last few lifting sessions. 80KG Clean Pull + Power Clean + Jerk ( upper back is on fire after heavy Snatch Pulls so a proficient rack was ... not overly easy 😅 we made do best we could 👌 ) 100KG Split Jerk double from Rack First jerk was totally fine.... second was abit pressed out with a bent elbow catch 90KG Clean high Pull/ Pull under / Clean fake ( lots of diff names for that ) + Power Clean + Hang Power Clean + Jerk Again fatigued but did the best I could with fired up back extensors 105KG Snatch Pulls X5 PB Pb for regular Snatch Pulls, done 105 x5 flat footed Pulls these are regular "on toes " Snatch Pulls ✅️ And the lights went down on this 80KG push Press from Rack. Sooooooooo, It’s been a while since I posted anything on this page and I’ve got an update, I’ve started trying to learn to Olympic lift. I am so used to being strong in powerlifting movements that it’s very humbling trying to do these alien exercises. This was quite a knock after my first week and I was questioning my decisions. However, this is the most I’ve enjoyed training in a while and being completely out of my comfort zone is the reason for this. It actually feels great being the one learning again and I’m excited to see the progress I can make over the remainder of this year. The exercises and activities you could do to help manage your back pain are endless. Managing your thoughts, beliefs, and expectations around what your back pain could mean is a bit trickier. Herniated discs, strained muscles, and nerve root associated pains are all quite common. All of those things can improve. Most back pain is “non specific” not because there is no cause, but because it’s multifactorial. Pain is a complex mental, physical, and emotional experience. Intervening mentally, physically, and emotional (yes it’s okay to cry it out and be frustrated sometimes) is how we should manage these things. I have often had good results just giving people permission to move in ways that feel good to them. They felt boxed in and afraid with normal medical advice and they needed a bit of freedom and optimism. Further, pain is unfortunately part of the human experience and it is okay to tolerate some. Tolerating some pain actually helps you manage it. Setting a threshold, “I can tolerate a 4/10 pain level while golfing” or creating a stoplight system, “if my pain goes above 4/10 I will stop” are great strategies. Finally, don’t overlook play, laughter, and community as you try to mange your pain. You’d be amazed at what feeding your soul can do for your body. However, research now shows that it is simply anatomically not reasonable to expect everyone to squat the exact same way. There is a huge variance in how are bodies are put together, so it is unrealistic to expect everyone to move the exact same way! The angle of the femur within the hip joint as well as the length of one’s femurs in relation to their torso plays a huge role in how someone naturally squats 🦴. This means that the best way to squat is in the position that feels the most natural to you! #tuesdaytip #weirdestcueever “Be weird about it!” Is what I said to the athlete. We were working on a primer, which is a small movement with a PVC pipe or an empty barbell that helps “prime” a portion of one of the Olympic lifts. These small movements are important to do because they get the motor pathway moving along so that when the weights get bigger, this movement takes place successfully and is more natural and doesn’t take much thought. The primer was the “scarecrow clean” for clean turnover, which is a pretty small movement. The clean turnover is the portion of the clean where the bar has basically gotten as high as it’s going to go and it’s up to the athlete to turn their arms over, i.e. come up through sort of a scarecrow position, keeping the bar close to the body and then delivering the barbell onto the shoulders. The athlete was tentative, not quite committing to going full scarecrow mode with a slightly heavy PVC pipe, and then turning the bar over slowly. The point of using this PVC pipe in this movement is to almost exaggerate the movement so that the movement pattern is created with aggression in mind, so that when a normal weight is used, the aggressive nature and timing of the turnover happens without thinking about it so hard. Getting back to the tentative athlete, I finally just blurted out: “Be weird about it!” And she got it. Suddenly there it was: full elbows up, bar staying close, turnover aggressive and well timed. Is this the weirdest cue ever? I actually think “second pancake” is but that’s a story for another day, hahaha! Hope this helps and happy lifting.
